I Want to Believe: UFO Sightings Are Increasing Because People Can’t Tell Them Apart From Drones

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! Actually, it’s an unmanned flying vehicle...

UFO sightings are on the rise, according to The Huffington Post’s self-described “paranormal expert” Lee Speigel. And the reason, he tells HuffPost Live, is increased use of unmanned drones by both governments and private groups.

In September, for example, a Canadian planetarium spooked fans at a minor league baseball game in Vancouver by flying a drone through the night sky near the stadium during the sixth inning. (Watch the YouTube video of the fly-by below.)

“The thing about drones is…that you can make them look like UFOs,” Speigel says. “You can go to the local hardware store, and for not a lot of money, you can pick up the materials you need…to make people go crazy.”

The National UFO Reporting Center says that UFO sightings increased 42 percent between 2011 and 2012, according to U.S. News & World Report. “You have to think of the older people who have no concept of what a drone is,” explains Tony Hallett, CEO of drone consulting firm Unmanned Response. “They’ll see something flying around the neighborhood with an LED light on, and…it’ll be an unidentified flying object for them.”

Last year, confused drivers near Washington, D.C. took pictures of a saucer-like object on the back of a truck and posted them to Twitter, prompting one concerned individual to call 9-1-1. The object turned out to be a military drone, MyFoxDC reported.

In June, an unidentified flying object spotted by protestors in San Paulo, Brazil also turned out to be a drone that belonged to a local TV station, according to the International Business Times.

Word to the wise: if David Karp is in the vicinity, it’s probably a safe bet that that “UFO” is a drone.

the ufo nuts are pretty stupid anyway... Go to one of their ufo fans site like abovetopsecret and claim to be a alien, or scientist these people are dumb enough to believe anything....

It's fun to do when bored and for lol's.

It doesn't matter what the scared little skeptics want to blame ufos on, the fact is that something is going on and it involves another intelligent race of beings and as soon as we find out the truth the scared little skeptics will never be seen or heard from again. Skeptics are very similar to bullies when you think about it.

It is impossible to reason with the stupid. Let them continue to pretend these objects are familiar. It makes them "feel" good.

Word to the wise: If David Winograd writes about UFOs, it is probably a safe bet that the he is either ignorant of the topic or controlled by his editors to tow the Government line.

Today in the news The Keepler Space Telescope has found that billions of Earth like planets all around us, in fact, there are 7,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 Earth like planets in the visible Universe. Since the life forming chemistry needed for organic life is spread equally across the universe this means we have neighbors close by us.

Likely TV, radio broadcasts have reached an intelligent life form by now and are monitoring the Earth by transmissions and visible light, telescopes. Does it really matter if we mistake UFO's for Drone's with what we know?

Seriously now, with drone technology still relatively new worldwide, just how many sightings (percent-wise) does he think are now actually attributable to drones these days?  Any number given at this point is pure speculation.  Surely the author doesn't really believe that any and all increases in sightings worldwide are now easily attributable to just one single explanation --- drones.  Really?

It is my view that drones may be a very small portion of unexplained future sightings that are studied.  But you can surely bet that it will likley be used even more as a likley explanation by casual observers and skeptics, just as "swamp gas" was used back in the day when anything was better than accepting the real possibility of intelligent life  existing outside our own planet.

Having personally had a very close encounter of the "first kind", over 40 years ago along with three other family members, I can attest to the fact that more than just drones are actively skimming over our planet.

Well now that Time has solved the UFO phenomena and shown us that we don't know what is going on, I guess we will no longer be needing the numerous documents produced under freedom of information applications that clearly show an ongoing dialogue between senior personnel at the United States Air Force, the Central Intelligence Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigations...would you like me to stop there? No, I'll keep going. Serious minded military men have been deeply troubled by the continued presence within the atmosphere of this planet of air-born devices which appear to be artificial, that is mechanical and metallic and not a natural phenomenon, of unconventional design and appearance and of vastly superior flight characteristics. Mark General Nathan Twinning's words people: "the phenomenon is real and not fictitious". Time magazine, along with most of the rest of the large media corporations lost all credibility on the subject of scientific ufology decades ago.

The archeological record starting before 5000 B.C. and forward is littered with drawings and script depicting UFO's images and stories of Alien from every culture and geographical location around the world. Today in the news the Keepler space telescope has found that Earth like planets are so common it's estimated that 100 billion of them are surround Earth. In fact, in the visible Universe there are 7,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 Earth like Planets. Drone's do not look like, move like, light up like a UFO's, Drone's have only been flying a few years so why the propaganda of dishonest bait and switch now? The life forming chemistry found on Earth is dispersed across the Universe equally allowing life to rise in nearly every direction around us. Most Solar systems in galactic evolutionary time are much more advance than Earth, some by up to 10 billion years more advanced.

Now that everyone has some type of camera on them at all times, where did the ET's go?

@MinorityReport You are 100% right.

I wrote this comment on Lee's Speigel's article.

"Oh, Lee. Every time I promise to stop writing critical comments, you force me to break my promise.

"It's a simple equation: More drones in the sky = more UFO reports."

Logically speaking, there could be more drones AND more "genuine" UFOs which are not explainable.

While drones may certainly be misidentified (or "misidentified") as UFOs, there s no way of knowing how many of the overall UFO sightings are in fact drones.

The title of your article should be: "Drones MAY BE Causing Worldwide Spike In UFO Sightings". The title you used is mere speculation disguised as fact."

Lee Speigel is an advocate for UFO disclosure, who has done some great work in the field of Ufology, but apparently he needs the money so badly that he writes these silly articles for the Huffpost, which serve as fodder for the big lie machine.

The way I see it, there are not UFO believers and UFO disbelievers; there are people who look at the evidence, and people who don;t. Anyone who looks at the evidence will realize that there is a phenomenon that cannot be explained away prosaically.
