Mallomars

We interrupt this article for an important Public Service Announcement: It’s Mallomar season.

That’s right, the delicious chocolate-covered marshmallow cookie is in stores now, and you may want to stock up, because supplies probably won’t last too long. The cookie, which turns 100 years old this month, has earned a lot of ardent fans during its existence and those fans have been known to stock up on it, hoarding their supply so they can have Mallomars on hand during the six months of the year that they’re not available. You see, we live in a world where you can buy Pepsi-flavored Cheetos or glow-in-the-dark CheetosĀ  or chocolate-covered potato chips, but you can only buy Mallomars six months out the year.

Back in 1913, when the company started selling the cookies, Mallomars were only shipped during cool months, so the chocolate wouldn’t melt. While refrigerated trucks have made that concern obsolete, a brand spokesman for Nabisco told NPR that the cookies are still only sold September through March, to maintain tradition.

Tradition never sounded less delicious.
