Policed arrested a Long Island deli owner and his son for trying to trick a customer into thinking his winning lotto ticket was worth only $1,000 instead of $1 million. Nice try.

A 34-year-old man, who did not speak English, bought a scratch-off ticket and attempted to collect his winnings from Karim Jaghab, 26, on Thursday. Jaghab gave the man $1,000 and kept the $1 million dollar ticket, Newsday reports.

The customer returned to question the amount on Friday, and Jaghab and his father, 57-year-old Nabil Jaghab, tried to give him $10,000 instead.

The father and son were arraigned Saturday on grand larceny charges. Their lawyer argued it was a “simple mistake.”
