Doobs Cause Moobs? Why Smoking Weed Might Be Giving You Man Boobs

The prevailing opinion among plastic surgeons is that there's a link between lighting up and men developing breasts.

Apparently it’s stoner folklore that doobs cause moobs–or, in more P.C. parlance, smoking marijuana can cause men to grow breast tissue. With medical marijuana becoming legal in states across the U.S., Philly.com delved deep and found that while the pro-pot contingent maintains there’s little scientific evidence behind the claim, it’s a shared belief in the medical community that there is a definitive link between marijuana usage and moobs.

Studies on the issue are few and far between since marijuana is still illegal in most states, but many plastic surgeons believe there is a link. One study found that marijuana has “widespread effects on multiple hormonal systems, including gonadal, adrenal, prolactin, growth hormone, and thyroid hormone regulation.” Or, as Philly.com put it, “When the drug throws off the normal balance of hormones, estrogen levels rise and stimulate breast tissue growth.”

“This is, of course, an inflammatory topic. There is skepticism either way,” said Adrian Lo, a plastic surgeon at Pennsylvania Hospital. “But in my experience, it’s very simple. If you’re a guy and you’re worried about gynecomastia, you shouldn’t smoke pot because there’s a link.” Robert X. Murphy Jr., president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, agreed that this was the prevailing opinion among plastic surgeons.

So if you’re worried about growing man boobs, you might want to put the bong down. You know, for science.

Since when does a commonly held belief constitute proof? Physicians once thought that illness was caused by an imbalance of "humours" and could be cured by applying leeches to put things back into balance. It was common knowledge, but that didn't make it true.

There is no scientific evidence of this. Just urban myths that have somehow made it into the health section of Time. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/920892 is just one study that debunked this nonsense. I wonder what's next for Time? Perhaps they can talk about the magical effects of rhino horn used in traditional asian medicine. Or maybe the magic of unicorns.

So they've found a new treatment for transgender people to feminize their bodies.

One thousand and seven medical uses.

I have been smoking over 30 years.

I have friends who have smoked for over 50 yrs.

When are we going to get man boobs?

When are we going to turn into hopeless junkies?

Reefer madness.

I guess it never went away.

This is what passes for 'news' at Time these days?  An anecdote by a few cosmetic surgeons which are  _trivially_ dismiss-able to anyone who actually has exposure to long term daily smokers? (Hell, I know a few gender dysphoric individuals who truly be ecstatic if their daily toking habit brought even slim hope of a decent bust... but it doesn't).

So Time joins the culture war crusade, and on the side of prohibitionist sensationalism?  There's a spot right next to Newsweek just waiting in the annals of irrelevant weekly news rags.

I always thought that a guy who has pot, enjoys smoking pot and sharing his pot would attract boobs not make them grow on him literally. This is ridiculous the opposition is just trying to make pot smokers feel self conscious. (looking in the mirror)

SOURSE on ""testicle altering effect"

"Although some of the change in organ weight may be due to lowered testosterone production by the Leydig cells of the testis, some of the weight changes may be due to a direct action of THC, and perhaps some of the other nonpsychoactive cannabinoids in marijuana, on the tissue themselves."

As far as a direct causal effect on "moobs"... I am living proof.

@Paulpot It's not "madness" at all. I began smoking pot extremely heavily before puberty....9 or 10 years old thru 15 or so? I noticed my nipples would 'tingle'' and my nipples did start to protrude. I also felt ''tingling'' in my testicles, more specifically the left one. My left testicle grew smaller & softer. Because of this, I smoked less & quit pot altogether at around age 17. I did experience puberty late. I think I did not start to grow any pubic hair until  the 10th grade? I remember  vividly not showering in gym class due to my embarrassment of no pubic hair. I am absolutely convinced that my HEAVY pot smoking before puberty, delayed my puberty, and did make my nipples protrude.I am now 51 years old. When I stopped smoking pot all those years ago, the symptoms stopped as well. To this day, my left teste is smaller & softer, and my nipples protrude. I have 3 brothers and our bodies are nearly identical....except that my nipples are soft and protrude, until the either get wet, cold or simply pinched.

@DilanTSilva The proposed mechanism of action is an effect on hormone levels, not overeating.
