Maybe it was out of the goodness of his heart — or maybe it was out of fear of his victim’s menacing threat.

Either way, a Chinese thief melted hearts when he wrote out 11 pages of contacts from an iPhone he swiped, and sent those contacts to the owner, state media reported Monday, according to AFP. He kept the phone. The thief allegedly stole the phone while sharing a taxi with Zou Bin, who works in the notoriously rough pub industry, the Xinhua news agency reports.

“I know you are the man who sat beside me. I can assure you that I will find you,” he wrote in a text message to his own stolen phone. “Look through the contact numbers in my mobile and you will know what trade I am in.”

“Send me back the phone to the address below if you are sensible,” he wrote.

Days later, he said, he was astonished to receive in the mail his SIM card and nearly 1,000 handwritten numbers.
