A dog named Elwood is seen during the 18th annual World's Ugliest Dog competition at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, Calif., June 23, 2006.

A beloved dog named “world’s ugliest dog,” which became the subject of a children’s book, died Thanksgiving morning.

Elwood, a hairless Chinese crested and Chihuahua mix except for a tuft of white hair atop his head, died unexpectedly, according to his owner Karen Quigley. The famed dog was crowned “world’s ugliest dog” in 2007 at the Marin-Sonoma County Fair in California, where he quickly gained fans and inspired the children’s book Everyone Loves Elwood.

Quigley said Elwood had been battling health issues recently, but was doing well as of late.

He's short, funny and knows how to let go ... of some powerful gas. Of course not so funny like this: http://my.opera.com/dogclothe/blog/ Hailing from Santa Rosa, Calif., Grovie is truly one dog that knows how to bring a family together. The dog shows make people feel they have to buy one of the "perfect" breeds on display but in reality, dogs like Elwood have a much happier life. Elwood was truly loved by his owner, unlike many of the show dogs who are bought and sent on the show circuit and never see their actual owners.

RIP Elwood.  You weren't ugly at all!
