The votes are in and the National Zoo has finally announced the name of its 100-day-old giant panda cub: Bao Bao.
The name means “treasure” or “precious,” according to a tweet from the zoo. Zoo officials made the announcement on Sunday as a part of Chinese tradition to name the cub 100 days after it is born.
Bao Bao was born on Aug. 23, and will be introduced to the public in early 2014. Breeding and survival is difficult for the endangered species, and Boa Boa’s brother, Tai Shan, who was born in 2005, is currently under care in China for breeding.
