Xbox Can Hear You Curse and Will Scold You For It

Your Xbox is listening, and will punish you for it.

Shouting profanities while slowly losing to an 11-year-old in Call of Duty is a rite of passage for gamers everywhere. But the symbiotic relationship between shouting the “F” word and getting blown apart is being threatened by a new feature in popular Xbox One games, one that some are already deeming “censorship.”

This morning Deadspin posted a video of an Xbox One “fan” playing NBA 2k14. Something strange happened during the game: when the user cursed, a message on the screen cropped up, “Call technical due to bad language.” The virtual ref had penalized the real world player for cursing. Deadspin also pointed out that a Reddit user playing FIFA 4 encountered a similar issue.

As it turns out, the Xbox One’s Kinect–which senses motion and sound, allowing users to interact physically with games like Skyrim and Mass Effect 3–was listening in on the user, and the way he behaved in real life had a direct impact on his score.

2K, NBA 2k14’s publisher, confirmed that your potty mouth can have adverse effects on gameplay. Though little noted, previous version of the game, NBA 2k13, had this feature. “This was a feature we incorporated to NBA 2K13 that we felt brought both realism to the game, and a more civilized online environment for our players,” said Jeff Thomas, Executive VP Visual Concepts for 2K Sports. “The result was so positive we have continued it in NBA 2K14.”

The game, Thomas continued, incorporates “a list of curse words or expressions that will trigger a technical foul when used during online play.”

Even in virtual games, being a good sport pays off.

The technical foul feature in question is a feature of the game (NBA2k14) in particular and not an built in xbox feature (as the misleading headline implies).  In fact, the Play Station 4 version of this game has the exact same feature (which requires the playstation camera with microphone).

Television in all it's wonder brought a flickering, hypnotic message direct from the theatre into our homes.  The Programming has been refined over centuries, dating back to Roman era when EVERYONE was required to go watch a play.  Slaves included.  Monkey-see, monkey do is the basis.  People see a behaviour, it gets incorporated into their being, whether they want to or not.  How many Orange faced, fist bumping idiots just kind of popped up after 'Jersey Shore'  became a thing?  Now the Social programming is going a step further.  The system is actually monitoring your behavior and correcting it with negative influence.  Throw away the tinfoil hat.  It's not a conspiracy.  It's part of the plan.

@JasmineRamon The kinect which is a part of the console heard the conversation and scolded them. That is an account of what happened. How is that misleading? How many PS4 owners really have a PlayStation camera?  Every XB1 owner has a kinect. Therefore your statement is misleading. You imply that the impact is equal. The vast majority of PS4 owners will never have to deal with it. I guess she is lucky her kinect works at all.

@MarkWhite-Silvermane I'm a grown ass man.  "Online interactions are not rated",  I will swear as much as I want to.  ***k you Mark, not because I have a problem with you, but because of the beauty in my right to say it if I please.

@MarkWhite-Silvermane You have no idea what your taking about my good sir.  First of all, the headline of this article is misleading.  The technical foul feature is built into the game (NBA2K14) itself by the games developers and not by Microsoft (XBOX1).  Its merely an attempt to inject realism into the game (you get a technical foul in the real NBA for using profanities) as you may well know.  In no way does the XBOX1 prevent you from or attempt to "scold" or 'punish" you in any way for such language outside of this game(or another game that may use a similar feature).  In fact, you can easily disable the voice functions of the game (or disable the kinect entirely for that matter).  I dont know what your agenda is but its clear that your little rant here is seriously misguided in relation to this particular article.
