Revelers gather on Times Square on December 31, 2012 in New York City.

Diminishing one of the last remaining suspenseful traditions of New Year’s Eve countdowns –and giving us another reason to cancel television subscriptions– is an app that lets you watch New York City’s famous ball drop in Times Square on a smartphone or tablet.

Event officials have rolled out a new version of the app, which was first created in 2010, featuring a more interactive experience including a Twitter component and a talking ball. That’s right — there will be a voiceover animating the ball at the nationally broadcasted fĂȘte.

Times Square New Year’s Eve executive producer Jeffrey Straus told the New York Daily News about 469,000 viewers across 184 countries used the app over the last four years, but he anticipates more to tune in online this year as Ryan Seacrest and Miley Cyrus help ring in 2014 at the six-hour event.

The app is available on iTunes and Google Play.
