Jennifer Lawrence Got Dorito Dust All Over Her American Hustle Costumes and Almost Ruined Them

Something tells me her Oscar is probably smudged with Nutella.

When required to wear a stretchy, thin white dress on camera, one might imagine an actress sipping filtered spring water and looking at pictures of carbs in the days leading up to the shoot. But not Jennifer Lawrence, Oscar award winning actress and America’s obnoxiously hot friend.

No, when Jennifer Lawrence wants to eat Doritos, she will eat Doritos, even if she is wearing a skin-tight dress that does not belong to her that was specifically designed to let the American Hustle audience “see every lump and bump,” according to costume designer Michael Wilkinson.

Wilkinson described the travails of a costume director outfitting the snack-lovin’ actress at an awards-season discussion at the Diane von Furstenberg exhibit in Los Angeles last night. The American Hustle costume team made four dresses for the pivotal scene where Lawrence’s character confronts her husband’s mistress, played by Amy Adams. They made the duplicates because Lawrence’s character was originally supposed to douse herself in champagne during the scene.

Even though the final cut shows no such bubbly bath, the extra dresses came in handy: “Jennifer Lawrence is a very . . . let’s say . . . raw and intuitive young lady, and she’s not against eating Doritos and snack food in her costume,” Wilkinson told the crowd.

Imagine what else J. Law eats on set if she’s fine with chomping through a bag of Cool Ranch. Extra-saucy buffalo wings? Beef chalupas? Chili dogs? A sloppy joe sandwich with powdered donuts instead of bread? The possibilities are endless.

Would this be "newsworthy" if she was a fat girl?  Perhaps, but with a different tone, to be sure...

That's good news, fame has not gone to her head.

The more I read regarding the more amazing she looks to me.

She must be 1 strong person to keep being herself with all the ooplaas her talent has brought her.

Keep going girl, fame is but a cloud on a winday day, talent will endure.

As a costume designer myself, there is one truth that is evident:  on every production, there will be at least one actor who will spill food on their costume despite repeated pleas NOT TO EAT WHILE IN COSTUME.  It happens every time, and it is always something awful such as spagetti sauce or mustard.  Actors = ruined costumes.

@kdcarolcohen As a onetime actor in another life, I know how hard it is to maintain focus during long rehearsals in an emotional scene. Jennifer's compulsive snacking could be just a way to release the emotional energy that comes with repeated rehearsals in a highly emotional part.

It's a lot more acceptable than Christian Bale's explosion at a technician during his Batman flick.

If people are noticing the costumes, rather than the actors, you've probably got a flop on your hands.Donald Sutherland said that talent such as Jennifer's comes along once in a generation. You might cut the girl some slack, seeing as she is going toe to toe with  heavyweights like DeNiro, Bale, Amy Adams, etc., at the ripe old age of 23.

By the way, what  Oscar nominated movies have you designed for?

@kdcarolcohen

that may be true but guess what? actors = jobs for costume designers
