More than 80 years after its launch in 1930, this Mars bar is world’s best-selling international confection. And although it may not have revolutionized candy-bar taste or distribution, it’s unparalleled at selling itself: its star-studded ad campaign “You’re Not You When You’re Hungry” helped sales hit around $3.5 billion in 2012, outpacing M&Ms, Reeses and Kit Kat. Also, says Kimmerle, it helps that Snickers offers the holy trinity of confection: nougat, caramel and peanuts—coated in chocolate, of course.

Can't be very "influential" if I've never even HEARD of four of them...!
The Hershey bar ought to be #1: American GIs spread them all over Europe and Asia during and after World War II. For milliions, it was the first chocolate they'd ever tasted, and to them a Hershey bar was as much a symbol of America as Coca-Cola. The Candy Bombers of the Berlin Airlift dropped tens of thousands of them to children living in a city that was still mostly rubble. It was the only sugar any of them got in a starvation diet, and they were delirious over them.
Earth to which ever pinko commie who wrote this hit piece on what is good and pure. Have but you ever heard of Reece's Peanut Butter Cups? You may insanely not call it a candy bar but then again you also said kit kat was #1. Are you the driving force to under mind the American way? You and you're wicked Godless ways should be deported to iowa or some other foreign country.

Kit Kat as number one? What Hershey employee wrote this tripe? Snickers should be number one and Milky Way number two.
Nice post. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work. Emaar mgf palm drive offer luxury apartment in gurgaon. http://www.emaarpalmdrive.com/
TIME Magazine needs to do better research on their articles.
The original Three Musketeers bar was originally meant to be shared:

Nutrageous: the most underdog of the candy bars. Not influential, by any means, but far better tasting than most on this list.
I'm almost offended, by the total absence of mention of Fry's chocolate, most lately made in Keynsham, near Bristol, England The company was absorbed by Cadburys, shortly before World War One. So, what makes me think that Fry's chocolate bars are particularly influential? Well... Fry's bloody well INVENTED chocolate bars.No Fry's... none of the listed makes would exist. I'd say that was pretty damned influential - wouldn't you?!

It's too bad that the majority of these are horrible in taste, can only be called "chocolate" when feeling particularly generous, and are processed using nasty chemicals by child slaves. If only good chocolate was more influential.
Hey! It's great to add the Hershey bar to the list with it's history with the military and all, but the REAL LEGACY is the MILTON HERSHEY SCHOOL founded by Milton Hershey in 1909 with his wife Catherine to provide FREE homes to orphaned children. It is still up and running today and is way more important than a museum!! It is a living legacy. The Hershey Company's controlling stocks are held by the School to keep it in operation!
In the early 1950s there was a candy bar that the TV ads told us kids how to share between three...it was sliced into three equal parts by a swordsman. The candy bar was the Three Musketeers and we always bought(5 cents)it when we wanted to share.
I believe the first candy bar designed around the concept of sharing was the 3 Musketeers. I recall reading that the 3 Musketeers candy bar originally came in 3 pieces and the advertising centered aound that it was easy to share with friends equally. Important during the great depression.
Based on the Hershey Bar's earlier introduction, 1900 vs 1911 and the fact that the Hershey bar has been in soldier rations for over 100 years creating an ambassadorship with locals for years, how can't it be the most influential. For years children have rushed American soldiers throughout the world to get a taste of a Hershey bar. Add the American tradition of smores to the argument and this Kit Kat ranking gets more and more absurd.
I swear. Damn you! Now I'm craving it. Thanks you butthole munchers. Now I have to get up, go to the store and buy a candy bar when I should be studying. Not studying for while? Grab a Snickers!
Hershey history claims their founder went to Europe to "study" chocolate making. That could not possibly be true. It's my considered opinion that he went there to steal recipes and got all the basics wrong. Did you know that Hershey's is not regarded by veterinarians to be dangerous to dogs due to the low to non-existent levels of actual chocolate in them? Hershey "chocolate" is an abomination.
It's unfortunate that Sarah Begley did not dig deeper into her story on chocolate. All but one on the list come from the same source, the commodities market. An 80 billion business per year. 75% of that cacao comes from W. Africa,. So whats so bad about that? 1. The cacao that they grow is known as bulk flavorless beans grown with the aid of pesticides and fertilizers. 2. Because they are flavorless, they over roast the beans to give it that burnt bitter note that gives it some flavor and they add chemicals to the end product to enhance it. 3. Most of the cacao is harvested by child slaves. 4. At the port of exit and entry, the beans are fumigated from rates and insects. With that said, all this candy she lists all start out the same way except for the Grenada Chocolate Company. There are many more bars like this on the market but she the reader an injustice by promoting bad chocolate. How is that any different than promoting the most influential fashions of all time and just choose 13 from Walmart? Now the reader gets the nod from her to promote bad choices. If she did her homework, she would find how handcrafted bars help the natives that grow cacao with sustainable methods, that help save the rain forests, feed their families by getting a higher price for their distinct flavor profile. I'm a chocolate sommelier in NY, ad use these types of bars in my Chocolate Tasting and pairings to bring awareness. If Sarah wants to do a follow up and responsible story, I would welcome the opportunity to educate her.
2. 3 Muskateers
3. Reese Cup
4. Milky Way
6. Almond Joy
7. Zero (refrigerated of course)
8. Kit kat
10. Hershey bar
Now this is a list.
I am with you Now Online. :)
@DorisOberlander Hershey only makes Kit Kat in the US. Nestle makes it for the rest of the world as they own the company that created it in 1911.
@DorisOberlander Strawberry KitKat and Green Tea KitKats are some of the best chocolate bars in the market today and you can get them almost anywhere but here in the States. It's a true shame.
Yeh, I can remember when they had use to have two notches so you could break them into three pieces.
@NicoleA I am from Grenada, and I can tell you that child slaves do not exist there. Maybe you should take a trip, and see for yourself, or make your own chocolate company.
@NicoleA Pictures, or your "claim" isn't true
@CoalAtrox It was also called 3 Musketeers because there was, originally, 3 flavors that is came in
@glenbarrington Yep. I remember those ads. Musketeer used his sword with speed and precision. So impressive.
@glenbarrington You're absolutely right, 3 Musketeers, 3 pieces.
@RoxanneBrowning The point of the article was to write about influential chocolate bars over the decades, not to do an expose of the chocolate industry. Also, it's kind of sleazy to use outrage to promote your business as you do in the final line of your post.
@Semi_Scale It's not a candy bar.
@prophetess.noella @RoxanneBrowning As a Chef trained at the French Culinary Institute, the Wine Sommelier courses suggests that wine and chocolate does not make for good pairings. It seems that people who know nothing about the rain forest, cannot wait to use it to their advantage for monetary gain, because of it’s eco fame. My country shares a large portion of the rainforest, and I work with the Indigenous people on many issues. It isn’t cool to name drop “Rain Forest” to get your fancy AMerican labeled products out there when in fact you are just reaping the benefits of the hard work of the Indigenous people . I wonder how much Roxanne pays the people who reap and harvest cacao? Nice way to try to get yourself and products into Time magazine Roxanne! By the way, the correct terminology is Indigenous people, not NATIVES!!!
