After taking a bite of his birthday cake last week, a 96-year-old man smelled a rat. Literally, the Long Island resident is claiming that a piece of a dead rat was inside his birthday cake, ABC7 Eyewitness News reports.
His nephew Neil Gold told the news station that his uncle Joe said he noticed a gray and black line in the German apple ring cake that looked like mold and then pulled out what the family believes to be a rat’s tail. The 96-year-old has reportedly not fallen ill from the baked good.
The family’s attorney, Ed Yule, told the news station that the dessert is expected to be turned over to state officials to investigate claims of “tampering.” The King Kullen grocery store that made the cake said in a statement that it has pulled the product from shelves, but maintained that the location where it was purchased, which is in Commack, N.Y., does not have “known” rodent issues in its bakery.
