A joke can easily be lost in translation, but the idea of a lighthearted springtime holiday is surprisingly universal. What Americans know as April Fools’ Day (sometimes referred to as All Fools’ Day) is observed the world over. Though historical evidence is ambiguous, most believe that when the Gregorian calendar was adopted in the late 1500s, the New Year was moved from April 1 to January 1. Those who kept to the old tradition and the old date were labeled fools, hence the association. But no two celebrations are quite the same: (LIST: Best – and Worst – April Fools’ Day Pranks Ever) France – The holiday here is known as Poisson d’Avril, which translates to April Fish, and is also celebrated in Italy as Pesce d’Aprile. Traditionally, schoolchildren will tape a picture of a fish on the back of an unsuspecting classmate and wait for the transgression to be discovered. Scotland – Scottish folks enjoy “taking the piss” out of their comrades so much that they’ve extended the holiday into a second day. April 1 was traditionally Hunt the Gowk day, although the name is fading out. Gowk means cuckoo, and sending a mate on a fool’s errand is the name of the game: you should ask someone to deliver a sealed message asking for help, the contents of which instruct the recipient to pass it along and continue the chain. The second day is known as Taily Day, which seems to have spawned the infamous “Kick Me” sign, and numerous posterior jokes. Iran – The 13th day of the Persian New Year is called Sizdah Bedar, and usually falls on April 1 or April 2. Pranks have reportedly been played on this holiday since 536 BC, making it perhaps the oldest known joke day. It’s customary to spend the afternoon outside, celebrating the new season and indulging in food, laughter, games, and good-natured jokes. After a picnic, you throw away green vegetables, known as sabzeh, which represent any potential illnesses or bad luck for the coming year. Or perhaps the star of cult horror film Leprechaun in the Hood.
Women have recognized the benefits of legwear, such as tights or pantyhose, for decades. They provide extra warmth, they smooth over any unsightly bumps or bulges, and they give you another opportunity to accessorize your look. Well, now men are joining the party as well. Mantyhose – stockings that are specifically designed and marketed to men, as well as unisex versions – are growing in popularity. Often they are worn by men who work outside, such as landscapers, to guard against the cold. They also serve as a compression tool for those with circulatory problems, and are said to help revitalize muscles if you are standing on your feet all day. (PHOTOS: Mancessories) Mantyhose have been popular in Europe – that bastion of progressive, gender-neutral fashion – for years, but have only recently gained traction in the U.S. Francesco Cavallini, vice-president of luxe hosiery company Emilio Cavallini, tells Women’s Wear Daily that men are a growing niche market: “When we started our online shop we noticed that a lot of tights sized medium-large were being purchased by men…so I did a search on the Internet and discovered there is a cult following for mantyhose.” Indeed, there is an online community of mantyhose enthusiasts, and many congregate at the site e-MANcipate.com. Its founder, Chan Kraemer, writes in a post, “We believe that pantyhose for men can be an everyday clothing item, and that it can be fashionable as well.” (VIDEO: A Girdle for Guys) Most men buying into the trend wear their tights much as you would wear long johns – beneath the pants, as an extra layer. However, those with sartorial boldness might try pairing them with shorts. For those concerned about fit issues that might be inherent to this unisex garment, Cavallini says, “The mantyhose are extremely elastic and stretchable and can fit men comfortably at the top. If it’s fine for Italian guys, it’s fine for the world.” Mantyhose are part of a larger trend of shapewear for men, which has gained steam as men have come to learn that a control

Starry-eyed romantics and red-rose haters alike can look to one source for their respective love or cynicism every February 14: St. Valentine. Though everyone knows the name, much less is known about the man – to wit, he may not even have been just one figure. Historical details are murky, and the prevailing theory is that one or multiple Valentines existed and may have been conflated over the years. Fast Facts: One Valentine was a Roman priest and doctor who was persecuted by the emperor Claudius II for marrying Christian couples. Claudius took a liking to Valentine, but Valentine overstepped his bounds when he tried to convert the emperor, and Claudius sentenced him to death – and an ugly death at that. Lore suggests that he was beaten, stoned, and finally beheaded. Some accounts state that this priest had fallen in love with the blind daughter of his jailer, and signed a letter that he wrote to her “from your Valentine.” Another tale says that after his brutal death, he performed the miracle of restoring the sight of his jailer’s daughter. There is another Valentine who appears in early martyrologies: a bishop of Terni, Italy, who was also allegedly persecuted in Rome. It’s been proposed that this man was one and the same as the Valentine executed by Claudius. St. Valentine was said to be interred north of Rome on February 14, though this date may mark his death instead of his burial. The feast of St. Valentine was established by Pope Gelasius I in 496. Some say that Valentine’s feast day is celebrated in February because the church wanted to Christianize an ancient Roman pagan festival called Lupercalia, which centered around fertility and purification, and also took place in February. Valentine’s feast day has been celebrated as a lovers’ holiday and a day of romance since the 14th century, when the date was thought to be the beginning of the mating season for birds.
Ryan, 6, is a natural child model, sporting blond hair, blue eyes and all-American confidence. But he also has Down syndrome, which is unusual in the worlds of modeling and national advertising. Target cast Ryan in its latest children’s clothing ad, and Nordstrom featured him in a campaign several months ago. Notably, Target did not publicize his inclusion; there were no self-congratulatory press releases or pats on the back, signaling that Ryan’s presence in the catalog was nothing out of the ordinary. The move was praised on the blog Noah’s Dad, which is penned by a father of a special-needs child. He deemed the ad an inspiration to counter false stereotypes and look at people with fresh eyes, and lauded Target for not making a big deal out of Ryan’s casting. (MORE: Down Syndrome Goes Viral, Thanks to a High School Touchdown) Down syndrome stems from a genetic abnormality in which an extra copy of the 21st chromosome is produced. The condition affects more than 400,000 people in the U.S. and can be marked by cognitive delays, intellectual disabilities and increased risk of other medical conditions. Many of those afflicted with Down complete school and hold jobs, often with the help and support of family and friends. Over the years, Hollywood has made halting strides in representing adults with Down syndrome onscreen. Many will fondly recall the character Corky from Life Goes On, played by Chris Burke. Today Lauren Potter is a member of the Glee cast, playing a cheerleader with Down syndrome. While many view the condition as a deficiency, Ryan shows that he can ham it up for the camera just as well as his peers. And in November, 1-year-old Taya Kennedy made headlines when she charmed the modeling world and was signed by a prestigious British agency. Taya also has Down syndrome. The more people with special needs are portrayed in pop culture and advertising, the closer we can get to recognizing and accepting those with disabilities as part of the fabric of everyday society. So perhaps the

Holiday treats may be on the way out, but fear not, dessert lovers – the Girl Scouts are introducing Savannah Smiles, a lemon cookie, just in time for this year’s sweet-selling season. Little Brownie Bakers, the company manufacturing the cookie, describes the new confection as “cool and crisp, with just the right number of lemon chips to deliver tiny bursts of flavor.” (MORE: Making Girl Scout Cookies Better for the Planet) Joining the ranks of Thin Mints, Samoas, Tagalongs and Do-si-dos, the Savannah Smile is a nod to the heritage of Girl Scout founder Juliette Gordon Low; the titular city is where Low founded the youth organization in 1912. This year marks the Girl Scouts’ centennial, and a myriad of parades, fairs, concerts, and special projects have been planned to commemorate the occasion. The Girl Scouts have been selling cookies as a fundraising effort since 1917, and the operation brings in hundreds of millions of dollars a year to local troops and regional councils. Though the originals are beloved by children and adults alike, newfangled cookie varieties are not always a resounding hit. In 2010, the organization was forced to recall several batches of Lemon Chalet Crèmes due to “foul smell and taste.” Though there were no food safety issues, consumers balked and production of the cookie was halted. Last year, in an effort to cut costs, the Girl Scouts announced that they were reducing their line of cookies to just six varieties. Wisely, they kept the most popular, and dumped also-rans like Thank U Berry Much and Dulce de Leche. Will Savannah Smiles enter the pantheon of hallowed Girl Scout cookies? Let your taste buds decide.
In a wacky turn of fate this New Year’s, three different American mothers gave birth to twins who straddled the midnight date change, leaving one twin born on 12/31/11 and the other with a 1/1/12 date of birth. Twins Ronan and Rory Rosputni of Buffalo, N.Y. were born after their mother’s water broke during a wedding. In Minnesota, Beckett and Freya Humenny came into the world weeks ahead of schedule. And Jenna and Leah Bear of Florida cut it as close as can be, with Jenna born at 11:59 pm on New Year’s Eve and Leah at midnight on New Year’s Day. All six babies appear to be healthy and happy. (MORE: Octuplets Fallout: Should Fertility Doctors Set Limits?) Mother Brighid Rosputni said to the Daily Mail, “This is like a dream. They have completely different birth dates and years.” And father Blake Bear told the Tampa Bay Times, “It’s a great way to end the previous year and start the new year.” While some twins might welcome the thought of a unique birthday (or birthday party), it’s not an option for most identical or fraternal siblings. Though different days of birth are not uncommon, disparate years are naturally more rare. In even more off-the-wall multiple birth news, a couple in Gloucestershire, England, has given birth to twins five years apart. Last November, Floren Blake was born from the same batch of embryos as her 5-year-old brother Reuben. Advances in fertility treatment made it possible for the Blakes to implant their fertilized eggs in 2006 and again in 2011. Critics will quibble that the children were not born together or grown in the womb together, factors which traditionally define twins. But they were conceived at the same time, from the same batch of genetic material. The Blakes were lucky that their remaining embryos survived intact after the first implantation; doctors generally agree that carrying a single baby to term is less risky than two simultaneously. And as icing on the twin cake, two Welsh siblings were just declared the world’s

To mark the centennial of the Titanic’s sinking, a British company is offering a chance to reconstruct the ship’s fateful journey by traveling to the location where the ship sank. Marketed towards relatives of those on board, as well as history buffs and those who are simply curious, Titanic Memorial Cruises has organized two voyages that will retrace the transatlantic journey. On April 8, 2012, the HMS Balmoral will depart from Southampton, England, en route to arrive at the spot near Nova Scotia where Titanic rests by April 14, the 100-year anniversary of the sinking. That night in 1912, the massive ship struck an iceberg and sank several hours later, claiming over 1500 lives. The wreckage still sits on the bottom of the ocean floor. A memorial ceremony will be held on board to commemorate the tragedy. (MORE: Belfast Celebrates Centenary of Titanic Launch) A second ship, the Azamara Journey, will depart from New York, cruising to the same location. There are 1309 spaces on the Balmoral and they are already sold out, though some spots remain on the Azamara Journey. The managing director of Titanic Memorial Cruises, Miles Morgan, told the Independent, “The interest has come from all over the globe – we’ve had people from 24 different countries booking…There are so many stories associated with the ship, from its own tragic history to the stories of those that lost their lives, that people remain deeply fascinated by it.” The recreation of the voyage has been painstakingly planned, so that passengers can eat the same last meal as those who were on board in first class – oysters, chicken, and roast pigeon – and listen to a string quartet perform on the deck, in a nod to the musicians who played as the ship went down. According to the Independent, some passengers are commissioning period-specific costumes to wear. A wireless radio station in Newfoundland, which received the original Morse Code SOS message from the Titanic, is even planning to repeat it.
She’s already the world’s highest-paid supermodel. She’s married to NFL quarterback Tom Brady, and they have an adorable son. She was named a goodwill ambassador to the U.N. Environment Programme. And she still maintains that enviable runway-ready figure. Now, the website Stockerblog, which has tracked every publicly traded company over the past five years, has determined that the brands Bundchen represents outperformed the Dow Jones Industrial Average on the whole. Fred Fuld, the economist behind the blog, concluded that “the Gisele Index is up 41% since January 2007 versus the Dow which was down 4% during the same period. Since January 2008, Gisele was up 39% versus a drop of 4% for the Dow. And since January 2009, Gisele rose 67%.” Since 2007, the 31-year-old has shilled for companies such as Pantene, Volkswagen, Apple, H&M, Dior and Versace. (MORE: Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen Are the World’s Highest-Paid Celebrity Couple) According to Forbes, last year the Brazilian-born model raked in $45 million, more than the No. 2 and No. 3 supermodels combined (Heidi Klum and Kate Moss, who made $20 million and $13.5 million, respectively). Bündchen has recently launched an eco-friendly skincare line, Sejaa Pure Skincare, as well as a lingerie line in Brazil. Both ventures should pad her bottom line even further. NewsFeed wonders how ex-beau Leonardo DiCaprio’s stock has fared since their breakup six years ago? With the tepid reviews of his latest film J. Edgar, we venture to say, perhaps not as well.
Animal rights activist group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has turned its wrath on classic video-game character Mario, who wears a Tanooki raccoon suit in Nintendo’s new 3DS game Super Mario 3D Land. The day after the game was released, PETA responded with an online campaign entitled “Mario Kills Tanooki.” The campaign features a basic yet effective Nintendo-style game where the player is empowered as the skinned raccoon to chase the fur-wearing Mario. The site states, “When on a mission to rescue the princess, Mario has been known to use any means necessary to defeat his enemy – even wearing the skin of a raccoon dog to give him special powers…By wearing tanooki, Mario is sending the message that it’s OK to wear fur.” (MORE: West Hollywood Becomes First City to Ban Fur Sales) The Tanooki suit first appeared in NES’s Super Mario 3 as one of a host of costumes that confer various powers on the wearer. The first incarnation of the raccoon suit did not cover Mario’s whole body, but was just a tail and a pair of ears, and gave him the ability to fly. His latest Tanooki suit is full-body and bears much more of a resemblance to actual animal fur. Video game powerhouse Nintendo responded to PETA’s allegations in a statement to Eurogamer: “Mario often takes the appearance of certain animals and objects in his games…These lighthearted and whimsical transformations give Mario different abilities and make his games fun to play. The different forms that Mario takes make no statement beyond the games themselves.” Controversy around violence and disturbing behavior in video games is nothing new, but PETA seems to be taking it a bit too far in this instance. Mario is a plumber, and has never been seen hunting or even shooting a gun (which probably puts him in the minority among video game characters), much less slaughtering a raccoon. The suit in question appears from a square box that hovers over him in the air. In fact, nothing about the

Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar, the parents at the helm of TLC’s 19 Kids and Counting, have announced that baby number 20 is on the way. “I was not thinking that God would give us another one, and we are just so grateful,” Michelle told the Today show. At 45 years old, she is in her fourth month of pregnancy and is due in April. The couple, from Tontitown, Arkansas, has 19 other children, ranging in age from 23 years to 23 months. Their oldest child, Joshua, is married and has two children himself. (MORE: Extreme Parenting on TLC) The family’s youngest child, Josie, was born in harrowing circumstances in December 2009. Michelle developed preeclampsia, as well as gallbladder problems, and Josie was delivered three and a half months premature. Thankfully, she has since developed into a healthy toddler. Despite the life-threatening conditions of Josie’s birth, the Duggars did not rule out adding to their family. They are taking normal precautions to ensure a healthy pregnancy, though Michelle will have to have her first C-section due to complications from her previous pregnancy. Jim Bob told People, “Michelle is probably in better health now than she was 10 years ago. She has been getting on an elliptical for about an hour a day and is very careful of what she eats.” The parents-to-be have told the rest of their family the good news, and the children are now debating the baby’s name and whether it will be a boy or a girl (smart money is on J-name number 20). Though it seems fairly evident, the Duggars have stated that they don’t currently use birth control, and leave everything in the hands of God. According to TLC’s website, Michelle has spent a mind-boggling 12 years of her life being pregnant (closer to 13 after this latest baby is born). At least the couple seem to take it all in stride; Jim Bob joked to Today, “We didn’t want to stop on an odd number.” Perhaps after this they can hit blackjack with
