Shortly after the touching story and photo of a NYPD officer buying a barefoot homeless man a pair of shoes went viral, more news of holiday giving has surfaced. This time, it’s not a cop, but a mysterious wealthy businessman who calls himself a “Secret Santa.” According to the Associated Press, the anonymous Santa, who hails from Kansas City, is giving away $100,000 this holiday season to unsuspecting strangers across the country. He made his East Coast stop last week, surprising residents of New York and New Jersey, many who’ve been affected by Hurricane Sandy. (WATCH: Bo Obama Inspects the White House’s Holiday Decorations) Accompanied by a police motorcade (lest word get out that he’s carrying thousands of dollars on his person), the Secret Santa made his rounds last Thursday, handing out $100 bills at disaster centers and thrift stores in Staten Island. From the AP: At a stop at a Staten Island Salvation Army store, one woman was looking over a $4 handbag. “But you get $100!” he told her, offering the bill. “Are you serious?” said Prudence Onesto, her eyes widening. “Really?” “Secret Santa,” he deadpanned, breaking into a broad grin. The 55-year-old unemployed woman opened her arms and offered him a hug. An aisle over, 41-year-old Janice Kennedy was overwhelmed: She received four $100 bills. The Secret Santa told the AP that the money “is not the point at all,” but rather about setting the example for random acts of kindness. This mysterious Santa reminds us of another anonymous Santa—the popular YouTube personality Mr. Chi City, and his yearly Christmas giveaways. In his annual Christmas videos, Mr. Chi-City drives around Chicago and hands out Christmas cards with cash to spread a little holiday cheer. Over in North Carolina, a whole shopping mall—the Asheville Mall—has gotten into the holiday spirit, creating a “Random Acts of Kindness” program, paying for portions of 35 to 40 random shoppers’ purchases, USA Today reports. Jeff Washburn, general manager of the mall, walked around and surprised shoppers in the checkout lines and around

If you’re still sending friends pictures of your planking and owling skills, it’s time to retire those tired tricks and get with the program. There’s a new meme in town and it’s called “milking.” The trend, which appears to have originated among students in the U.K., involves standing in a public space and pouring a bottle of milk over one’s own head. The messy trend got its start in Newcastle, England. where a group of college students came up with the idea on a whim. One of the students in the video, 22-year-old Tom Morris, told the British edition of Cosmopolitan, “We were just in our kitchen talking about doing it outside Starbucks in [the Newcastle suburb of] Jesmond and thought it would’ve been really funny.” (READ: The Top 10 Memes of 2011: Planking) So, that’s what they did. After the video got what Morris called “a load of likes” on Facebook, they decided to film a full video, which they uploaded to YouTube last week. “Milking Newcastle” features the friends buying milk from the store and promptly pouring it over their heads as they walk out, pouring milk on their heads while standing in the middle of a roundabout, while exiting the train, in the middle of a busy sidewalk, in front of store windows, in the shower, in front of crowded bars and while eating cereal (smart!). The meme’s been quickly gaining momentum, spreading across the U.K. and apparently all the way to Alabama. Will you be partaking? Considering the effort (and cleaning) involved, this meme is not for the fair of heart. It’s also not for the socially conscious—because, come on. That’s some perfectly good milk right there.
Brian “Kato” Kaelin, the famously dodgy witness in the O.J. Simpson murder trial of his wife Nicole Brown, made headlines today thanks to New York Post gossip columnist Cindy Adams: Ask Kaelin today, this very minute, if O.J.—currently jailed in Vegas on a separate charge—killed his wife, and I repeat his exact words: “The statute of limitations has now passed…so I can now say…yes, he did it.” Adams goes on to ask Kaelin why he didn’t report the truth, letting Simpson “get away with murder.” “I was too scared. I was terrified,” Kaelin told Adams. Or did he? Kaelin, now 53, was living in the football star’s guest house at the time of the 1994 killings. He was declared a hostile witness by prosecutors during the criminal trial, due to his vague testimony and rambling, strange behavior on the stand, the LA Times reports. (READ: Kato Recalls Murder Night “Thumps”) However, he’s since told various outlets that he does believe Simpson is guilty. “So, do I feel he’s guilty? Yes, but can I prove it? No,” Kaelin told Headline News just last week. “And that’s what happened in the court of law.” But Kaelin is firmly denying the Post story, telling TMZ that he never had an interview with Adams. “It’s very untrue and it’s terrible to bring up,” Kaelin told TMZ in a video. “I have no first hand knowledge.” “It’s terrible to bring up something that’s not true and then have the families have to go through everything again,” he said. When asked what really did happen that night, Kaelin told the gossip site: “I’ve expressed my opinion before that I think he’s guilty. I think he’s guilty. And I’ve said on many shows, can I prove it? Of course not. I cannot prove it. In the first trial, the jury said he was innocent, and—you know—that’s it, that’s our justice system.” Simpson is currently serving a 33-year sentence in Nevada for armed robbery and kidnapping.
Chris Brown got a new neck tattoo. And because it’s Chris Brown, he’s managed to—yet again—stir up controversy, digging himself even deeper into a hole. The tattoo in question is a portrait of a woman with high cheekbones and full lips, half swollen and bruised, and a blackened eye covering the right side of her face. In fact, the tattoo looks a lot like the singer’s ex-girlfriend Rihanna, whom he pleaded guilty of assaulting in 2009. Brown’s rep is denying that the rapper’s tattoo has anything to do with Rihanna, telling ABCNews.com that the ink was actually a “sugar skull (associated with the Mexican celebration of the Day of the Dead) and a MAC cosmetics design he saw. It is not Rihanna or an abused woman as erroneously reported.” The rep also told ABC that the tattoo is currently peeling, which makes it look different from the design he intended. The image that Brown gave to Koskela is posted above, and it does look like it’s perhaps meant to be the actual design on his neck. However, the thought that the singer, who was sentenced to five years probation for the assault, would ever think it’s a good idea to have an image of a woman’s disfigured face on his body is ludicrous. Brown hasn’t yet posted any kind of clarification on his Twitter, though he did post a link to a Perez Hilton post that called him out for the design. For a guy who has everyone thinking he’s tattooed his ex-girlfriend’s battered visage onto his neck, he doesn’t seem to be in a hurry to clear things up. Indeed, his reticence has prompted observers like Grantland’s Rembert Browne to speculate that the singer knows exactly what he’s doing — that despite the denials, we must “know that the tattoo is, in fact, Rihanna.” Browne writes: In a sick, twisted way, I’m really happy this tattoo exists. We, as a culture, need him to do things like get tattoos of physically abused ex-girlfriends on his neck so that we never forget who we’re dealing with. If Rihanna and Chris do

Could a new infrared-camera technology render traditional drunk tests obsolete? Maybe, Wired UK reports. This could be good news for cops, as well as the uncoordinated among us, who were never very good at walking in a straight line even when stone cold sober, anyway. Wired points to a paper published in the International Journal of Electronic Security and Digital Forensics by computer scientists Georgia Koukiou and Vassilis Anastassopoulos of the University of Patras in Greece that outlines two new algorithms that may change the way we identify the drunks around us. (READ: Study: Thermal Imaging Could Be Used to Hack ATM Codes) The first algorithm utilizes thermal-image scans, since alcohol causes blood-vessel dilation. Koukiou and Anastassopoulos compared scans from subjects who were inebriated against sober subjects. In order to compensate for human, environmental and equipment variables, a second algorithm is used. This analyzes parts of the subject’s face: alcohol consumption will cause a person’s nose to become warmer, while their forehead stays cooler. The paper suggests that this system of thermal-imaging could be especially useful to police officers, who often have to rely on purely behavioral clues when stopping someone. The cameras would also come in handy for nightclubs and bars, Complex points out. Since it’s unlikely that most people carry around breathalyzers, a quick scan could be a valuable tool for bar-goers to figure out when it’s time to call a cab.
Anyone who’s ever filled out a census document or taken the SATs is familiar with that odd moment when you have to bubble in your racial classification. For many, the choices are confusing, limiting, and problematic. In the end, each person bubbles in what they best feel represents their identity. But when Mostafa Hefny immigrated to the United States from Egypt in 1978, he didn’t get a say in that decision. “The government [interviewer] said, ‘You are now white,” Hefny told CBS Detroit. Since the 1980s, CBS reports, Henfy has been fighting to have the U.S. government reclassify him as black, which is how he’s always seen himself. “My classification as a white man takes away my black pride, my black heritage and my strong black identity,” Henfy told the Detroit News. Hefny, 61, filed a suit in 1997 against the U.S. government to be reclassified, but his case was dismissed. Hefny has also reached out to President Obama for help, writing him a letter on June 29, the Detroit News reports, as well as the Justice Department and the United Nations. “I have been awarded, inadvertently, the negative effects of being black such as racial profiling, stereotypes and disenfranchisement due to my Negroid features. However, the legal demand of my racial classification of ‘white’ prevents me from receiving benefits established for black people, “ he told CBS. Hefny says he’s lost out on university teaching positions because they were positions designed for a minority and he did not qualify. Currently, Directive 15 for the federal Office of Management and Budget Standards for the Classification of Federal Data on Race and Ethnicity defines race by the following categories: Hispanic or Latino, American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, Black of African American, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific islander, White, Nonresident alien, Resident alien, and Race/ethnicity unknown. (READ: Should the Census Be Asking People If They Are Negro?) “White” is defined as “a person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa” — which

Using the restroom is something that’s easy to take for granted. However, according to the Gates Foundation, four out of 10 people around the world “don’t have a safe way to poop.” The flush toilet, which has existed in essentially the same form since 1775, is long due for an update. A year ago, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation awarded $4,000,000 in grants to eight universities to create a safe, efficient, near-waterless toilet — one that costs less than five cents per user per day. This week in Seattle, the Reinvent the Toilet fair has been showing off the inventors’ creations. The competition is a big deal, the foundation says. According to its website, 2.6 billion people lack access to sanitary facilities, and sanitation problems contribute to the deaths of 1.5 million of children under the age of 5 every year, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and south Asia. “Reinventing the toilet can save millions of lives and help end poverty.” (READ: Water Scarcity; Rio Climate Summit: Top 1o Priorities for a Planet in Peril) The winner of the challenge? Caltech, which took home a $100,000 prize. Led by professor Michael Hoffman, the Caltech toilet runs on solar power, and breaks waste down into power-generating hydrogen. Reuters reports: “..a solar panel produces power for an electrochemical reactor that breaks down feces and urine into hydrogen gas, which can be stored in hydrogen fuel cells to provide a back-up energy source for night operation or use in low-sunlight conditions.” The second and third place prizes were awarded to the UK’s Loughborough University and Canada’s University of Toronto; both universities had designs that turned excrement into usable resources and would sanitize waste. Bill Gates has already announced four more grants, totaling $3.4 million, for another round of further research into toilet innovation. “Imagine what’s possible if we continue to collaborate, stimulate new investment in this sector, and apply our ingenuity in the years ahead,” Reuters reported Gates saying Tuesday. “Many of these innovations will not only revolutionize sanitation in the developing world,

Late last year, Sweden turned over its nation’s official Twitter feed to regular Swedish citizens, offering the Internet a glimpse into various slices of Swedish life. It was a brave experiment, and one that’s occasionally been an embarrassment and p.r. hazard: The musings of everyday Swedes on subjects like masturbation and anti-semitism garnered no small amount of internet ridicule, not to mention a dogged bid by late night satirist Stephen Colbert to take over the account. But it hasn’t deterred the great state of Vermont from getting in on the action. On July 23th, Vermont’s tourism department launched @ThisIsVt, handing over the reins to the account to a different Vermont citizen each week. The Twitter feed has over 1,470 followers, and the first three citizens have logged more than 640 tweets. The project’s goal, the New York Times writes, is to “present a contemporary, humanized narrative as it works to attract more tourists and young residents.” The first Vermont resident to take the helm was 53-year-old Ken Millman. From “Montreal, Ottawa, San Francisco, Reno,” Millman introduced himself in his first tweet. “Since ’97, live in Alburgh, work @ Sp!ke, play in #VT.” His first few tweets included pictures of surprising discoveries made on his commute, and a photo of Millman’s neighbor: “Norman V—originally from Enosburg Falls—an accomplished wood worker, builder, musician and logger.” (READ: Regular Citizens Now in Charge of Sweden’s Twitter Account) Last week, the feed was manned by Elissa Campbell, a bookbinder residing in Montpelier. I love living in Vermont. It’s very peaceful where I live – my house is backed by 50+ acres of conservation land that can’t be developed. — THISISVT (@THISISVT) July 30, 2012 The latest Vermont resident to invite followers into his daily life is Edward Shepard, who took over the feed on Monday. I live, work & play in Burlington #VT (#BTV), a vibrant, connected, livable city overlooking Lake Champlain & the #Adirondacks beyond. — THISISVT (@THISISVT) August 6, 2012 What have we gleaned about Vermont from the first couple weeks of this

Joshua Smith has taken it upon himself to help his crumbling city, one cup of lemonade at a time. Smith, 9, along with his friend Dwayne Durant, 10, set up a lemonade stand outside Smith’s home on the city’s west side last week, and raised over $3,300 in just five days, the Free Press reports. “I heard the city was in crisis because the city is broke and I was really upset,” Smith said. The young entrepreneur and his family presented the city with a check for $2,832.64 on Tuesday, with the rest of the money coming through electronic bank transfer later. Here are five reasons why Smith and Durant are the best kids in America: 1) They don’t settle. Smith originally opened his stand—where he sold organic lemonade, juice, punch, water, and popcorn—with the goal to raise $1,000. He surpassed his goal, so he set a new one: $2,000. By Thursday, he’d made $2,175.64. By Friday’s end, Smith pulled in $3,392.77 of profit, the Free Press reports. Rather than being satisfied by meeting his goal ($1,000 from lemonade sales is no small feat!), he continued to raise the bar for himself and the potential to turn his city around. 2) They’ve inspired the community. Donations have been pouring in, Smith’s mother Rhonda said. Even more, other groups have been inspired by Smith’s efforts and are giving back to his neighborhood. After hearing that Smith was trying to raise money to mow the grass in the nearby parks and fix some of the broken water fountains, a volunteer group called the Detroit Mower Gang helped out by mowing two of the parks close to Smith’s home. The group’s founder, Tom Nardone, told the Free Press that he was impressed by Smith’s thoughtfulness. More proof that positive energy is contagious. 3) Smith’s sale has earned him a scholarship and a Spirit of Detroit Award. Smith will be awarded a $2,000 scholarship from the Rosa Parks Scholarship Foundation when he graduates from high school; it’s the first time the award has been given to

Texas college student Chance Bothe’s last words prior to driving his truck off a cliff were in the form of a text message: “I need to quit texting, because I could die in a car accident.”He miraculously survived, but Bothe’s story has become an ironic example of the dangers of texting while driving. By now, most drivers are at least somewhat aware that texting and driving is not a winning combination. From states outlawing text use while driving, to the highway billboards across the country urging drivers to just focus on the road, to statistics related to texting-related crashes, there are plenty of warnings to suggest that we probably shouldn’t do it. And, yet, we often do it anyway. (WATCH: ‘Texting While Driving’ Get Put to the Test, Literally) It was last January that Bothe’s truck flew off a bridge and plummeted into a ravine, and the 21-year-old has spent the last six months in intense recovery in the hospital. According to WAFF, Bothe had a “broken neck, a crushed face, a fractured skull, and traumatic brain injuries.” He also had to have doctors bring him back to life three times. “My face was broken from my cheekbones all the way up,” Bothe told the New York Daily News. Bothe even had to learn how to speak again. Now, Bothe believes it’s his mission to urge other drivers to stop texting, lest they wish to experience a similar fate. “I know I died like three times but God didn’t keep me away from coming back here,” he told ABC 13. “I have a higher purpose in being here. And I think it’s to tell everyone not to text message and drive. “Don’t do it. It’s not worth losing your life,” he told ABC 13. According to Distraction.gov, 3,092 people in 20110 were killed in crashes involving a distracted driver—a driver who was either texting, eating, adjusting their radio, or talking on their cell phone. 416,000 people were injured in accidents from these same types of distractions.
And now from the department of news that will surprise no one: Snoop Dogg has been slapped with a 2-year ban from Norway after trying to sneak eight grams of marijuana into the country last month. The eternally laid-back rapper was arrested for possession at Kristiansand Airport in Kjevik, en route to perform at a music festival in southern Norway, the New York Daily News reports. The D-O-Double-G was caught—naturally—by dogs that sniffed out the drugs in his luggage. In addition to being caught with his beloved Mary Jane, Snoop was also fined for packing too much in his wallet, carrying more cash than legally allowed. He was fined $8,600 for the two offenses, Holger Hagesaeter, Snoop Dogg’s legal rep in Norway, told the Daily News. (READ: You Can Smoke Snoop Dogg’s New Book. No, Really.) Hagesaester also revealed that the rapper/singer/actor/author isn’t bent out of shape about his newly-accrued Norwegian ban, explaining that his client “can live with the decision” and doesn’t plan to appeal it. After all, pot busts are just a routine part of life for Snoop at this point: He was arrested last January at the U.S.-Mexico border checkpoint near El Paso, Tex., caught with over two ounces of his drug of choice. He was also arrested in Stockholm, Sweden in 2007, and busted at airports in Orange County and Burbank, Calif. in 2006 for marijuana possession — and that’s only going back a few years. But what else would you expect from the author of Rolling Words: A Smokable Songbook? In other news, the Dogg is currently gearing up to release what is likely to be his crowning achievement, a reggae album under the name of his alter-ego, Snoop Lion. Nothing makes more sense than this.
We unwittingly stumble into people’s private and most personal moments all the time. Sometimes they’re moments of heartbreak, like witnessing a couple’s heated argument on the sidewalk. Other times they’re full of joy, like witnessing a baby’s first steps at the park. Whatever the emotion, though, we’re often merely detached observers of these pivotal moments. Angila Golik’s story is quite the opposite. Golik found herself at the scene of a romantic proposal in Washington D.C. earlier this month — one in which she suddenly became an active participant. On July 2, Golik — a high school teacher visiting the U.S. capital from Carson City, Nevada — was out for an evening stroll, taking photos of the D.C. monuments in their nighttime glory. She headed toward the Washington Monument, only to notice a peculiar scene in the middle of the rotunda of the War Memorial, the Today show reports. The normally crowded memorial was empty save for one couple, sharing a romantic moment. When suddenly, the man, dressed in an Air Force uniform, pulled out a ring. (WATCH: Only on YouTube: Valentine’s Day Wedding Proposals) What better photograph than a marriage proposal? Golik took her camera and zoomed in to capture the tender scene. The happy couple embraced as the woman seemingly accepted. “It was just too sweet!” Golik wrote on her Facebook. Thus launched a campaign to find the couple. The unofficial engagement photographer posted two of the photos she took on the social networking site, along with a message to spread the word, a reconnaissance mission that quickly went viral. Speculation ran rampant about who they were and why they chose the War Memorial to propose. But Golik’s reason for wanting to locate the couple was much more humbling. “I’d like to give them their photos. That’s my only goal,” she said Tuesday on the Today show. “If it was me — because I was newly engaged at one time in my life — I would’ve loved to have pictures of my proposal.” After a nearly two week search, coinciding
