Correction appended: June 18, 2013 Here’s a lesson in what not to do if you lock yourself out of your high-rise apartment: Don’t try to climb down from the balcony above, especially if you’re 150 feet above terra firma. Gravity is completely unforgiving. A British man learned the perils of this sort of urban rappelling when he attempted to climb down the balcony to get into his locked apartment. Tom Stilwell, a British man on a working vacation in New Zealand’s largest city of Auckland, was attempting to get back into his 14th-floor apartment in the Volt Towers at 2 a.m. Sunday. But the 20-year-old had evidently forgotten his key. Fortunately, his upstairs neighbor was still up. Geraldine Bautista, who lives on the 15th floor, agreed to help lower Stilwell down to his apartment. Bautista recounted to the New Zealand Herald that the late-night arrival was “a little bit tipsy” but otherwise polite in his request. “I will not bother you, just let me use your balcony,” he reportedly said, before hopping over the balcony. Bautista noted that she was so shocked, she couldn’t even scream for help: “I thought I was dreaming,” she told the Herald, after attempting to grab his hand to pull him back. His plunge was about 13 stories straight down, onto a roof of a neighboring building. Emergency services arrived so quickly, the Herald reports, that his roommates arrived just 10 minutes later to find police searching their apartment for details about the man. In a statement, New Zealand police noted there were “no suspicious circumstances surrounding the fall.” Stilwell’s fall was thought to be broken by the adjacent building’s roof. He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, but by Monday morning he was “awake and laughing,” the BBC reported. Roommate Dave Thomas said his injuries were shockingly minor given the height of the fall, sustaining a neck and back fractures, a broken wrist and other internal injuries. He was upgraded to “satisfactory” condition Monday. “From that sort of height you can

Pink with polka dots. Lavender. American flag-striped. These are just a few of the colors that have emerged from former President George H.W. Bush’s surely-brimming sock drawer over the past few months. “I like a colorful sock. I’m a sock man,” the 41st president admitted to the Today show last year. Knowing what we know now, dare we say he was understating his appreciation? Bush now uses a wheelchair at public appearances, so it’s practically a given that cameras are trained as much on his feet as they are on his face. (PHOTOS: George H.W. Bush Has the Best Socks) Indeed he’s made no secret of his love for socks. (Nor have we.) But because he can only show off two at any given time, his George Bush Presidential Library Foundation is giving him a hand (err, a foot?) for his 89th birthday. The College Station, Tex.-based organization has afforded their namesake a celebration as colorful as his daily footwear choices – by asking the American public to don “exuberant socks” and post their photos on social media. And yes, that’s something of a political order. So it’s no shock that today’s festive celebration has caught the eye of many prominent politicos. Happy 89th to President George H.W. Bush—celebrating your birthday in style: #41s89th http://t.co/hrK7Eu50dh— Nancy Pelosi (@NancyPelosi) June 12, 2013 Happy Birthday Mr President @GB41Foundation #41s89th http://t.co/j8ATnLW7hU— Greta Van Susteren (@gretawire) June 12, 2013 From all of us @TheBushCenter – Happy 89th Birthday President Bush! #41s89th http://t.co/DaU3fuz4Ek— (@TheBushCenter) June 12, 2013 And Bush himself, the famed connoisseur of colorful hosiery, is certainly reveling in today’s foot-focused frenzy. By our count he’s been photographed twice so far, donning three separate styles of sock. He started off the day with a classic yellow-and-red argyle sock that clashed with the blue-and-mustard polka dot pattern on his other foot (it’s his birthday – he can mismatch if he wants to). Happiest of birthdays to my dear Gampy. Mila's little feet on Gamp's colorful socks..sweet socks to fill. #41s89th http://t.co/25DX8FOqD9— Jenna Bush Hager

Catch it if you can — your food, that is. The London-based chain YO! Sushi, known for zipping raw fish around on conveyor belts, needed a new stunt for delivering burgers, its latest menu item. So it created an entirely new delivery method: the flying tray. Your food will be delivered directly to your plate by one of the new drones that YO! Sushi is testing out at its flagship store in central London. Dubbed the iTray, the four-propeller flying waiter is outfitted with a flat top to carry plates and is controlled by a nearby waiter with an iPad. Two cameras on the machine help guide it to the proper starving patrons. As soon as the food is retrieved, the trays fly back to the kitchen. (MORE: Rise of the Drones) YO! Sushi helped pioneer conveyor-belt sushi in the U.K., allowing the freshest sushi to circulate through the restaurant. The chain recently introduced a sushi burger, filled with teriyaki chicken or kimchi salmon and topped with toasted rice “buns.” To promote the new product with a bit of gimmickry, YO! Sushi looked to technology once again. “The concept came from our thinking of ‘How are we going to show people how light and exciting and fun this food type is?’” YO! Sushi CEO Robin Rowland explained in a promotional video. So it may be just a temporary idea after all, even though the flying tray can deliver food at speeds of 25 m.p.h. — exponentially quicker than your average waiter. Sadly the iTrays are only in operation inside the confines of the restaurant. If YO! Sushi wants to be competitive in the food-delivery-by-drone market, it will have to soar to new heights, and quickly. There is already a burrito-dropping drone being tested over the San Francisco skies. And just last week, Domino’s Pizza announced it’s closing in on the aerial market over the U.K., testing out an unmanned craft called the DomiCopter that can deliver two pizza pies at once. Never again will you have to worry about your

At the Boston Marathon on Monday afternoon, journalists and cameramen waiting at the finish line expecting to capture the jubilance of the runners soon found themselves covering a tragedy instead. Videos of the twin explosions that rocked the spectator area near Copley Square, quickly went viral online. In the clip above, cameras covering the finish line for Boston-area news stations caught a glimpse of the fiery blast that sent thousands fleeing. Here’s a collection of the videos broadcast from the scene in the first few hours after the incident: First responders rushed to the scene to aid the dozens of injured bystanders; in total more than 170 people were hurt in the two explosions. The scene only became more chaotic as a second explosion rocked Boylston Street about 10 seconds later. News reports quickly trickled out from the scene as witnesses described what they’d seen to local news crews. Boston Police quickly set up a press conference at a nearby hotel, where police commissioner Ed Davis initially confirmed that there were two explosions and multiple casualties. Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick used the same press conference to tell families to go home and stay home. The day after the Boston Marathon explosion, the investigation continues. Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, Texas representative Michael McCaul, explains the surprise of the Boston Marathon attack and methods for catching the culprits.

The First Lady is living her “Let’s Move” motto to its finest. On Friday, Michelle Obama visited Jimmy Fallon’s late-night show to bust some serious moves. To honor the third anniversary of her children’s-fitness campaign, she joined Fallon — who donned a blonde wig and some pastel yellow pants that sat somewhere between capris and trousers — showed off the “Evolution of Mom Dance,” offering up the best matronly moves that we so dearly love, from “the shopping cart” to “raise the roof.” But Fallon seemed genuinely stumped when Michelle Obama did the Dougie, at which point she was left on stage alone to shimmy the show into a commercial break. (PHOTOS: Michelle Obama’s Defining Fashion Moments) Their moves, though, meant no disrespect to those who use prepackaged dance moves — the skit was a parody of the historical YouTube hit “Evolution of Dance,” which has been viewed over 200 million times. After strutting her moves, the First Lady sat down with Fallon for a quick chat, discussing her wellness campaign and her husband’s second term. And what would she do when they move out of the White House in four years? “I hear that when Jay Leno retires that The Tonight Show position is going to open — and I’m thinking about putting my hat in the ring,” she joked.

On Feb. 28, he’ll be the Holy Father of the Roman Catholic Church, his prayers and benedictions craved and coveted by more than a billion faithful around the world. But come March 1, Pope Benedict XVI will settle back into a quiet, austere life as Joseph Ratzinger. After announcing his retirement on Feb. 11, the 85-year-old pontiff has promised to devote the rest of his life to prayer. But where? Would he return to his native Germany or remain in the tiny city-state which he’s called home for at least the last eight years? After he steps down at the end of the month — becoming, incidentally, the first pope to do so in nearly 600 years — he’ll head to Castel Gandolfo, a small town in the hills southeast of Rome that houses a majestic papal residence. The Pontifical Palace has been used as a summer home for every pope since Urban VIII in the 1600s. (PHOTOS: Hanging Up His Hat: Pope Benedict’s History of Fanciful Headwear) But the former pope won’t remain there for very long – just until renovations are finished on his permanent pad in Vatican City. Upon his return, Ratzinger will be given residence in a disused convent that stands within the Vatican walls, a tony house of about 4,300 square feet that stands on a hill just a few hundred yards behind St. Peter’s Basilica. The convent of Mater Ecclesiae was built in 1994 around what was once the residence of the Vatican gardener. Since then, different orders of cloistered nuns have spent between three- and five-year terms there, the Catholic News Service reports. After the final group of nuns moved out in November, renovations began. The nuns that once inhabited the place lived in 12 apartment-like “cells” on the highest floors of the four-story building. All told, it’s a rather embellishment-free building, originally constructed “for contemplative life within the walls of Vatican City,” according to the Vatican’s website. But it’s being converted now into the Pope’s permanent home, “complete with contemporary chapel, garden

They stood knee-high, even waist-high, but in the end, top honors went to the tiniest of the bunch. Coming in at shin-high was Banana Joe the affenpinscher. The small, black pup with the monkey-like face from the toy group beat out his six competitors to clinch the Best in Show title at the 137th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. The 6-year-old wiry-haired affenpinscher hails from the Netherlands and brings home his 86th Best in Show title with Thursday’s win. With a monkey-like face and a bouncy step, Banana Joe found a friend in judge Michael J. Dougherty, the congenial Californian tasked with choosing the top dog. (TIME EXCLUSIVE: Behind the Scenes Photos at Westminster) But Joey wasn’t quite the crowd favorite among the final field of seven. That was an honor that went overwhelmingly to the Old English sheepdog that resembled a giant cotton ball — and was appropriately named Swagger. The 20-month-old puffball was paraded around the arena multiple times to overwhelming cheers, but was ultimately bestowed with the “reserve” title, a Miss Congeniality–esque accolade. For Dougherty, it seemed a tough choice: after parading the pups around once, he went back for at least two extra looks. That’s because in the end he couldn’t choose just one — this year, the Kennel Club instructed a “reserve dog” be chosen. Madison Square Garden, shoving out the New York Rangers hockey team this week in order to host the competition, erupted in cheers. After a second parade and a few chants and claps — the New York crowd was getting a bit impatient — Dougherty announced Banana Joe as the winner. “He just wanted it a touch more,” Dougherty said of the pup. “He was on from the second he walked in.” For the second year in a row, first prize goes to the competitor from the toy group. Last year the winner was Malachy, a Pekingese. Banana Joe barked and jumped at his accolade, but overall he seemed calm and collected during his postshow press conference. It’s because he’s a

In 1982, a government employee named Lenny Skutnick leaped into the Potomac River to rescue passengers of a downed airliner — and for his bravery was invited to attend Ronald Reagan’s State of the Union address as a guest of the President and First Lady. Since then, it has become a tradition for the White House to invite a group of heroes, ordinary citizens and VIPs to grace the gallery as the President gives his annual speech. This year, dozens of guests will flank Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden in their cordoned-off section high atop the House of Representatives chamber—students and health care workers, CEOs and first responders. This year sees a number of invitees representing the fields of gun control and technological innovation — two themes expected form a major part of Obama’s speech. Keep an eye on these guests sitting with Michelle and Jill this evening: Tim Cook – The Apple CEO will be the highest-profile guest to join the First Lady. While it’s been a turbulent few weeks for Apple stock, Cook no doubt won fans in the Administration for his announcement late last year that the company would begin constructing some of its Macintosh computers in the U.S. He’s also the second Apple guest in a row at an Obama State of the Union: last year, Laurene Powell Jobs — widow of the company’s founder Steve Jobs — joined the First Lady for the address some six months after her husband’s death. Cleopatra Cowley-Pendleton and Nathaniel A. Pendleton Sr. — The parents of slain Chicago teenager Hadiya Pendleton, who was gunned down on the city’s South Side just days after she performed at Barack Obama’s inauguration on Jan. 21. Michelle Obama attended the 15-year-old’s funeral last weekend along with White House Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett and Education Secretary Arne Duncan, all of whom grew up or lived in the tumultuous section of the Windy City. Obama is expected to make gun violence a significant part of his remarks.
As the northeast dug out from a major blizzard Monday morning, the southeast started to clean up after a tornado struck Sunday afternoon. Hattiesburg, Miss., a city of 50,000 and home to the University of Southern Mississippi, was in the storm’s destructive path: the tornado tore through a main street and caused damage to university buildings. Hattiesburg, in the southeast corner of Mississippi near the Gulf of Mexico, suffered no fatalities; the 17,000-student university is closed Monday and Tuesday for Mardi Gras, meaning many students had left town. The university noted that four buildings were damaged in the tornado, leaving the campus in a “state of emergency,” according to the college’s website. (LIST: 10 Deadliest Tornadoes in U.S. History) At a news conference Monday, Mississippi governor Phil Bryant said that 60 people were treated for injuries and more than 200 houses and mobile homes were swept up in the twister. Bryant declared a state of emergency across seven counties in the state, as rain continued to pound the region Monday and power outages persisted. He said fatalities were luckily avoided thanks to tornado sirens, which sounded up to 30 minutes before the twister arrived, giving residents ample time to take shelter. Mississippi Emergency Management Agency spokesman Greg Flynn told the Associated Press it appears a single tornado caused widespread damage in three counties in southern Mississippi. “It sounded like Katrina,” Hattiesburg resident Charlotte Walters told the AP Sunday evening, the memories of the devastating 2005 hurricane still fresh for many Gulf natives. According to the Storm Prediction Center, there were 15 reported tornadoes on the ground Sunday across Mississippi and Alabama.

The Japanese want to put pants on David. A replica of Michelangelo’s famous statue was installed without much warning last summer in Okuizumo, Japan. But the famously nude biblical hero is raising eyebrows – and reportedly scaring children — in this town of 15,000 in southeast Shimane prefecture. The 16-foot-tall statue — which stands alongside a similarly exposed Venus de Milo — was donated by a local businessman and stands tall in an Okuizumo park that also features a running track, baseball stadium and children’s playground, the AFP reports. According to local officials, some residents have asked officials to put underwear on David in order to “preserve his modesty.” (MORE: Italy vs. Florence: Who Owns David?) “They are statues of unclothed humans, and such pieces of art work are very rare in our area. Some people apparently said the statues might not be good for their children,” town official Yoji Morinaga told the AFP. Despite the reputation of some Japanese for — shall we say — esoteric sexual predilictions, full frontal nudity is illegal in photos or on film. Morinaga says he hopes that the town’s residents will learn to appreciate the sculptures and believes that they’ll be valuable in education. But the figures’ nudity remains an issue — as it has been for other viewers through the years. When a replica of the statue was donated to Queen Victoria in 1857, she was reportedly so shocked that a modesty-preserving fig leaf was specifically commissioned just to appease Her Majesty. It’s no longer a part of the statue, which is on display at London’s Victoria & Albert Museum, but instead is housed in a special case just behind the work of art.
Hasbro left it up to the Internet to choose its new Monopoly game piece – and as we all know, any time you ask the Internet anything, the answer is usually Cats. So as of today the trusty iron — which was engaged in a furious battle with the shoe and the wheelbarrow for the bottom spot on the poll — succumbs to old age and irrelevance, to be replaced by a frisky feline. (MORE: Which Monopoly Piece Would You Have Voted Off the Board?) But that got us thinking: surely there are many other board games out there that could use a cat infusion. Here are our suggestions for some classic games; let us know your ideas in the comments. Chutes & Ladders This classic preschool game pits kid against kid in a race to the top of the board, bedeviled by chutes and abetted by ladders. But let’s face it: a cat could do it in half the time. Skilled at pouncing into hard-to-get places — and then refusing to climb down — a cat piece would have a ridiculous advantage over the child-shaped pieces. Our only nagging doubt is that part of Chutes & Ladders’ appeal (for parents, anyway) is the clear moral choice it presents for young players: Break a window, go down a slide; do your chores, climb up a ladder. And as Camille Paglia noted, cats basically have no morals. At all. Operation How else are you going to recruit the next generation of aspiring veterinarians? Instead of hearing a nerve-rattling buzzer noise when you mess up, though, you’ll have to answer to screeching cat sounds. Battleship Same game, just change the name to Cat-tleship. And give Rihanna more lines in the inevitable film version. Clue Allergies can be deadly. And adding a cat to the game of Clue will likely make them the new weapon of choice. Anaphylactic shock is no fun, but it’s certainly more humane than having Professor Plum bludgeon an unsuspecting sucker with a candle stick in the conservatory. Risk When stockpiling

Today is the day each year when Americans celebrate our breakfast-for-dinner loving tendencies with a free short stack of pancakes at IHOP, in honor of National Pancake Day. In lieu of paying for the stack of three pancakes, the chain asks that you leave a donation to the Children’s Miracle Network. If you’re just hearing about this national festival now, fear not: IHOP will be serving flapjacks until 10 p.m., depending on your time zone. But if you didn’t already have National Pancake Day circled on your calendar, it’s not surprising you missed it: it can be an elusive holiday. The celebration normally falls on the Tuesday before Fat Tuesday, although the date jumps around. (Last year, it was held the week after Fat Tuesday, simply to avoid conflicting with Valentine’s Day – perhaps to avoid the awkwardness of cheap boyfriends everywhere taking their significant others out for pancakes instead of a nice dinner.) (WATCH: 10 Memorable Movie Breakfast Scenes) But things get far more complicated than that. National Pancake Day — as celebrated by the restaurant chain formerly known as the International House of Pancakes, we might add — is totally separate from International Pancake Day. In many countries around the world, Fat Tuesday itself — which falls on Feb. 12 this year — is just known as Pancake Day. It comes just before the start of Lent, the annual Christian season of penance and fasting, which is as good a reason as any to get out the syrup and chow down. In the U.K., the tradition of making and eating flapjacks on Fat Tuesday goes back to the Middle Ages, when religious folks abstained from dairy, eggs and meat from Ash Wednesday until Easter. In many other European nations, including Sweden and Poland, the day is celebrated by making the most sugary, fatty pastries possible — usually a form of pancakes. Why IHOP decided to do away with any pretense of multilateralism and celebrate Pancake Day a week early is unclear. (And despite its former name, IHOP isn’t hugely international: it

It was the Super Bowl ad you couldn’t look away from: supermodel Bar Refaeli and Walter the Nerd making out, accompanied by what TIME’s James Poniewozik called “some of the most unsettling wet sound effects this side of a Walking Dead zombie killing.” But the real shocker? The sloppy kiss, which lasted almost ten seconds, took as many as 60 takes to get right. (WATCH: The Best and Worst Super Bowl Commercials of 2013) Jesse Heiman, who played Walter, has offered up some candid details about the smooch. “It was somewhere between 45 and 65 [takes],” the 34-year-old Heiman told CNN. “I know the rumors online are that I was the one asking for more takes, but it was actually give-and-take – she was asking for more, too.” As for the kiss itself? “It was like kissing paradise. Like kissing God’s hands,” Heiman told the New York Daily News. In case you missed it, the 30-second ad (see it here) that ran during the first quarter of Sunday’s game touts Israeli supermodel Bar Refaeli as the sexy side of the company, and the chubby Bostonian actor as the buttoned-up Walter, the smart side. “Together they’re perfect,” says longtime spokeswoman Danica Patrick, as the two go in for the kiss. (MORE: Beyoncé Is More Important on Twitter Than the Super Bowl Itself) While there are probably a lot of people who would be willing to lock lips with the 27-year-old one-time Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition cover model for free, sources told the Daily News that Heiman probably pulled in between $35,000 and $50,000 for his work. The career Hollywood extra has appeared in about 65 roles and is a longtime fixture on movie and TV sets despite rarely getting speaking parts. “I’m glad to represent the fat guy or the nerd guy,” he told CNN. “All those stories about people getting bullied, I’m glad to represent them and show that you can accomplish anything if you dream big.” PHOTO: Oreo’s Snappy Super Bowl Blackout Ad

Beercycling: Alaska Brewery Uses Spent Beer Grains to Make New Beer

It’s the circle of life at its finest: using beer to generate electricity, and then using that electricity to brew more beer. The Alaskan Brewing Company in Juneau, has hit upon a clever recycling plan. The brewery installed a $1.8 million boiler last year that takes the mashed-up, waterlogged grain – the primary waste product from its brewing operations – and uses it to create steam in order to keep its kettles cooking. The newly-created steam is then used to boil the wort, the malted barley mixture created before fermentation. And in the recycling process, the spent grain is also dried out, making it lighter to ship away from the brewery. ( Used grain is the brewing company’s biggest waste products, since it’s unusable to the brewery.) (MORE: Bottle of the White House’s Beer Fetches $1,200 at Charity Auction) Sarah Day / The Juneau Empire / AP In this Jan. 16, 2013 photo, the upper level of Alaska Brewing Company’s new spent-grain burning system churns out thermal energy in Juneau, Alaska. Brewers across the world ship their grain to farms for use as animal feed, but there’s not a large market for it in Alaska, given the state’s small agricultural industry. What’s more, Alaska’s capital is only accessible via sea or air, making it prohibitively expensive to ship the spent grain out of town. “We had to be a little more innovative just so that we could do what we love to do, but do it where we’re located,” Alaskan Brewing co-founder Geoff Larson told the Associated Press. Installed thanks in part to a grant of nearly $500,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the boiler is too new for the brewery to yet realize the financial benefits. But plant manager Curtis Holmes tells the Anchorage Daily News that the new installation is expected to cut its fuel consumption by as much as 70 percent and save $1.5 million in fuel costs over the next 10 years. Alaskan Brewing is relatively small in its operation, only brewing 150,000 barrels each
