Ladies of Paris, you no longer have to fear arrest for wearing trousers in the French capital. It sounds très odd, but apparently a bylaw requiring women to ask permission from city authorities before dressing as “men” and donning trousers have been on the books for more than 200 years. On Jan. 31, the Telegraph reported, France’s Women’s Rights Minister, Najat Vallaud-Belkacem, declared the law effectively revoked, citing its incompatibility with France’s constitutional equality rights. (MORE: Can a Stranger Dress You Better than You Dress Yourself?) The law, which was originally intended to prevent women from wearing the pantalons fashionable with Parisian rebels in the French Revolution, was amended twice throughout its history to make exception for women who happened to be “holding a bicycle handlebar or the reins of a horse.” (PHOTOS: Highlights from Haute Couture Fashion Week 2013) Of course, there have been attempts to repeal the law in the past, but it wasn’t really viewed as a priority with lawmakers. But last year’s application to revoke the bylaw, made by Alain Houpert, a member of the conservative UMP party, was heard. ”This ordinance is incompatible with the principles of equality between women and men, which are listed in the constitution, and in France’s European commitments,” Vallaud-Belkacem said in a statement last week. ”From that incompatibility follows the implicit abrogation of the ordinance.” Which is good news for the famously fashion-conscious Parisian women, for whom such a restriction would be the real fashion crime.
It’s been four months since the Taliban attacked Malala Yousafzai, the 15-year-old Pakistani girl who had spent years advocating for education rights for girls, shooting her in the head as she made her way home from school. Yet the terrorists’ bullet didn’t stop Malala. And now, in her first public address since the shooting, Malala has appeared in a video message recorded just days ago, giving voice to her astounding recovery. “Today you can see that I’m alive,” she says, clearly and confidently. “I can speak. I can see you, I can see everyone. And today I can speak and I’m getting better day by day.” (MORE: Malala Yousafzai Is TIME’s Person of the Year Runner-Up) Perhaps even more remarkable than her survival and recovery, however, is the fact that Malala has resumed her fight for girls’ education. Instead of being cowed by the attack, Malala says, “I want every girl, every child to be educated. And for that reason, we have organized Malala Fund.” The fund was established by a group of high-profile people — including Mark E. Kelly, the astronaut and husband of former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords — who were inspired by Malala’s dedication to her cause and horrified by the attack on her. Acting fast, they connected with a wide range of people — educators in Pakistan, tech innovators and non-profit veterans — to establish a fund that could be chaired by a small board, including Malala and her father Ziauddin. (PHOTOS: The Malala Effect) Alyse Nelson, the CEO of Vital Voices, the organization that administers the fund, told TIME in December that Malala Fund founders “wanted to incubate an organization that she would one day run.” And Malala, who had long dreamed of one day organizing such a charity, which will provide grants to other organizations and individuals focused on education, is now strong enough to see her dream through. The fund’s impact will likely be profound, even beyond the strides towards girls’ education. For not only has Malala survived the attack on her by the Taliban, but her cause has

What’s in a name? Quite a lot when it comes to top chefs and a renowned gastropub. Bloomberg reports that celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has applied for a U.K. trademark for the restaurant name the Spotted Pig, which happens to be the name of the famous New York eatery opened in 2004 by celebrity chef Mario Batali, restaurateur Ken Friedman and chef April Bloomfield, who also helms the restaurant. (Jay-Z and Bono are also co-owners.) The restaurant has remained one of New York City’s dining hot spots. Ramsay’s company, Ramsay Holdings International, submitted the application last month, but objections to the application can be filed for up to two months. So far, neither Batali nor Bloomfield, who is British, has registered a public objection. Other celebrity chefs, however, have waded into the issue. Kitchen Confidential author Anthony Bourdain registered his personal objection on Nov. 20, tweeting, “That Gordon Ramsay would register name ‘Spotted Pig’ in London and screw April Bloomfield (who built the brand) over is shameful pathetic.” The condemnatory tweet earned more than 1,000 retweets, including one from celebrity chef nice-guy Jamie Oliver.
Every year, the masterminds at Victoria’s Secret stage a televised fashion show, complete with supermodels, pop stars and other token celebrities, in order to show America the true meaning of the word “sexy”. But somewhere along the line in this year’s planning stages something went awry: instead of sexy they went with culturally offensive, sending supermodel Karlie Kloss down the catwalk in a Native American headdress and a teensy bikini. Unsurprisingly, the backlash was swift. A Navajo Nation spokesman, Erny Zah, told the Associated Press, “We have gone through the atrocities to survive and ensure our way of life continues. Any mockery, whether it’s Halloween, Victoria’s Secret — they are spitting on us. They are spitting on our culture, and it’s upsetting.” (MORE: Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in 22 Pictures) (A brief lesson in cultural and historical sensitivity: the most commonly depicted Native American headdresses, like the one Kloss sported, are those of the Plains tribes and worn by chiefs and honored warriors. They also often have spiritual significance.) Victoria’s Secret was quick to apologize following the incident, as well as to announce that the offending segment would be edited out for the show’s Dec. 4 broadcast. Kloss also tweeted her apologies. Problem solved? Sort of. As NewsFeed has pointed out in the past, these sorts of offensive stunts take place quite often in the fashion world. And as BuzzFeed points out, Victoria’s Secret has been known to feature questionable outfits in their catalogues as well. The lingerie’s company mea culpa might seem like a step in the right direction, but until the fashion industry lays off the racist and derogatory stunts, we’re going to remain turned off.

As allegations of sexual abuse against British TV star Jimmy Savile continue to mount, a bank has frozen the late BBC presenter’s $7 million estate pending possible legal action by his accusers. NatWest bank, the executor of Savile’s estate, has released a statement saying, “Given the claims raised, distribution of the estate has been put on hold.” Once one of Britain’s biggest TV stars, Savile’s name has now become irrevocably linked with scandal. Ever since a commercial-television documentary in Britain outed the BBC presenter as an alleged pedophile last month, a steady stream of new victims has come forward. Scotland Yard has said they’re currently pursing 400 lines of investigation and believe Savile could have raped or molested hundreds of girls and several boys over the course of his career at the BBC. (MORE: Jimmy Savile and the Groupie Culture of the 1960s and ’70s) Savile, who died last year — well before the allegations emerged — had, according to the Financial Times, willed that the majority of his assets be held by NatWest bank on behalf of the Jimmy Savile Charitable Trust. Throughout his life, Savile was well known for his philanthropy, often turning up at hospitals and schools to donate funds or meet the patients — visits that in the current circumstances may have been opportunities for him to sexually abuse already vulnerable young girls. Unsurprisingly, the scandal has cast a shadow over his charity work. On Oct. 23, the BBC reported that the trustees of both the Jimmy Savile Charitable Trust and the Jimmy Savile Stoke Mandeville Hospital Trust felt that the organizations couldn’t go on, and that the money would likely need to be directed to other charities. The trustees told the BBC that the charities wouldn’t be able to continue because they would “always be linked in the public’s mind with the late Jimmy Savile.”

Hey, one percenters: here’s a property that may be beyond even your reach. As the rest of Britain struggles through an economic downturn, London’s real estate market for the super-rich appears to be flourishing: a house with an asking price of £300 million — or about $486 million — is on the market for what’s believed to be the highest asking price of any home in Britain’s history. (MORE: What Recession? A $1 Billion House Rises in India) The west London property, which borders Hyde Park, has apparently been for sale several months, although only a select few have been invited to bid on it. Hardly surprising, considering there’s only a handful of people in the world who could afford such an estate, which is going for more than double the price of Britain’s next most expensive home, the 300-year-old Park Place estate in Henley-on-Thames, which sold last year for $227 million. It’s still a far cry from the most expensive house in the world, a massive, 27-story skyscraper in central Mumbai owned by Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani, which features a ballroom, 50-seat cinema, three helicopter pads and a staff of 600, and is estimated to be worth a cool $1 billion. (PHOTOS: How the 1 Percent Lives: Nine of America’s Priciest Homes) So what does nearly half a billion dollars get you in London? Seven stories, 60,000 square feet, 45 bedrooms, a pool, industrial sized kitchen, underground parking, and a view of Hyde Park. It sounds pretty good to us — and might explain why property expert Henry Pryor in the Guardian deemed the property “a trophy rather than an investment.” And while it is true that many across the UK have been feeling the pinch of the recession and the effects of the government’s austerity measures, London’s property market has been soaring in recent years thanks to foreign investors from Europe, the Middle East and northern Africa. In fact, the home was once owned by the former prime minister of Lebanon, Rafiq Hariri, until his death in 2005.

“Words cannot express the horror that I feel,” Dark Knight star Christian Bale said in a statement on Saturday following the shooting in Aurora, Colorado, at a premiere showing of the final Batman film. “I cannot begin to truly understand the pain and grief of the victims and their loved ones, but my heart goes out to them.” But on Tuesday, Bale himself went to them. Bale arrived in Aurora Tuesday evening to visit several of the victims of the attack. The Medical Center of Aurora’s interim president, Bill Voloch, told the Associated Press that Bale spent around two-and-a-half hours at the hospital, visiting with patients still being treated for their injuries. He also thanked the medical and emergency staff at the hospital, which rushed in 18 patients the night of the shooting. (PHOTOS: Batman Movie Theater Shooting) Bale and his wife stopped by the town’s growing memorial site, set up across the street from the Century 16 theater where the shooting took place. Over the past few days an online campaign has grown, requesting that the actor visit the survivors, but Voloch noted that the visit was a low-key affair and a spokesperson from Warner Bros. told the Denver Post that Bale appeared on his own behalf, not the studio’s. Despite a request from Bale that no media be notified of the visit, word quickly spread that Batman had made an appearance. One of the patients that Bale visited was Carey Rottman, who promptly posted photos of himself in the hospital with the actor on his Facebook page. It made for a far more uplifting post than the one the Rottman left the night of the shooting. That status simply read, “Shot in the leg at Batman. Where is he when you need him. Please pray for everyone there.” MORE: Portrait of a Suburb: Aurora Gets on the Map — But Not the Way It Wanted

BBC’s Digital Entertainment and Legacy Games division has launched a new Facebook game for ardent Austenophiles: Jane Austen: Rogues and Romance (tagline: “A Bygone World of Wit and Adventure”). Could this be a way for die-hard fans to finally put their vast knowledge of the works of Austen to good, if not productive, use? Maybe not. The game rests on the premise that the characters Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy have fled the pages of Pride and Prejudice and their creator, Jane Austen, needs help tracking them down. Yes, it’s a little weird, but the rest of the game plays out like your typical Facebook game, requiring players to search for items and collect points and encouraging them to purchase gifts in the app. And while it does include countless references to Austen’s six novels – Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Northanger Abbey, Persuasion, and Mansfield Park – the actual gameplay is pretty tedious. Like Mr. Collins tedious, but without any of the absurdity which you can laugh at later. So if you happen to love Facebook games, check it out. But if you just love Austen, we suggest you pick up your copy of Persuasion again.
Just a day after a great white shark was spotted “stalking” a man in a kayak off the shore of Nauset Beach in Cape Cod, Mass., authorities have deemed that it’s safe for swimmers to get back in the water. (VIDEO: Shark Bites Another Shark) Walter Szulc Jr. was kayaking for the first time on July 7 when hundreds of people spotted something he couldn’t see for himself: the dorsal fin of a great white shark, cutting through the surface of the water, just a few feet behind him. As Szulc Jr. continued on, oblivious of the Jaws-esque scene unfolding at his back, swimmers raced for the shore. Once they’d reached safety, their attention turned to the kayaker. “There were hundreds of people on the beach, and they were all at the edge, yelling paddle paddle, paddle!” onlooker Dave Alexander told news channel WHDH. (MORE: At Last! A Shark with a Frickin’ Laser Beam on Its Head) When Szulc Jr. at last heard the warning calls from the spectators on the beach, he turned to see what the fuss was about. “So I looked behind me, and that’s when I saw the shark; it was pretty much right there,” he told WHDN. He then speedily made his way to shore and out of danger. No one was harmed but beach officials urged around 3,000 vacationers to stay out of the water. But despite the warning, several swimmers were reportedly back in the water later that evening; the beach was back in business the following day. (MORE: Great White Sharks Spotted in Massachusetts) There have been a number of great white shark sightings in recent weeks around Cape Cod, with another town also issuing swimming warnings after sharks were spotted at the end of June and beginning of July. The town of Chatham, just south of Nauset Beach, has banned people from swimming within 300 feet of seals, as the sleek swimmers are among the great whites’ favorite prey. Somewhat surprisingly, that the Cape Cod shark sightings seem to have actually attracted people

The Internet strikes again. As part of a promotional contest for Energy Sheets a brand of caffeine-laced breath strips, rapper/singer/Miamian Pitbull has pledged to visit whichever Wal-Mart location receives the most likes on Facebook by July 15. When bloggers David Thorpe and John Hendren of the website Something Awful caught wind of the promotion, they launched the twitter hashtag campaign #ExilePitbull. Their goal: to send the ubiquitous singer to the most far-flung Walmart in the country — Kodiak, Alaska. Unsurprisingly, with the help of Twitter and Reddit, the campaign has spread faster than a Pitbull track makes its way up the pop charts, and there are now more than 65,000 likes on Walmart Kodiak’s Facebook page. (LIST: Ten Ways Walmart Changed the World) To give him credit, Pitbull has taken the whole matter in stride and has even been joking about the campaign on Twitter. And the people behind the Energy Sheets promotion don’t seem too bothered that a bunch of pranksters hijacked their contest. Warren Struhl, founder and CEO of the company behind Energy Sheets, told CNN “I’ve known Pitbull for a few years now, and he’s up for a party – whether it’s around the corner, or you have to get there by three planes and a boat in between, as I understand it takes to get to Kodiak.” (MORE: Bizarre News: Rattlesnake Bites Marijuana Grower in Walmart)

Every year, millions of Canadian children are given vaccinations at school to help combat any number of conditions. But the female students in Calgary’s Catholic school system will be receiving one less shot than their public school counterparts. In 2008, a group of bishops led by Bishop Frederick Henry deemed that providing the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination — which guards girls against the four strands of HPV most associated with cervical cancer — to fifth and ninth-grade girls could be viewed as a compromise of Catholic teaching. Why? Because HPV is a sexually transmitted virus. The National Post reports that when children in Calgary’s Catholic schools were sent home with vaccination information from Alberta Health Services they were given an additional letter. Penned by Henry and five other bishops, the letter instructed parents that “Although school-based immunization delivery systems generally result in high numbers of students completing immunization, a school-based approach to vaccination sends a message that early sexual intercourse is allowed.” If you find the decision absurd, you’re not alone. This week, a group of parents, physicians and researchers have gone public with their fight to have the Catholic School District overturn the ban and allow the school vaccinations to stand. The group, known as HPV Calgary, has started a campaign to pressure school trustees to address the situation by June 30. The group argues that there is no evidence that vaccinations lead to higher rates of promiscuity. And while parents of girls in Catholic schools would still be able to have their daughters vaccinated away from school, the group argues that the ban would ensure that many girls wouldn’t get the chance. “If you are an immigrant, if you are not so affluent, if you don’t have a car, if you’re very dependent on an hourly wage, it is very unlikely that you’ll get immunization,” Dr. Ian Mitchell, a professor of pediatrics and a bio-ethicist with the University of Calgary, told the National Post. “So we saw this decision by the Catholic school board as affecting all children,

As Wikileaks founder Julian Assange remains holed away in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, hoping he’ll be granted the political asylum that would allow him to avoid extradition to Sweden over rape allegations, one big question looms. Just how do Assange’s supporters, especially the people who’ve fronted his bail money, feel about his unexpected move? The whistle-blower, who counts Bianca Jagger and Michael Moore among his most vocal supporters became one of the world’s most divisive figures since unleashing his Wikileaks website and its treasure trove of classified documents. The Australian born Assange became even more controversial when he was accused of rape in Sweden and the country attempted to have him extradited to face questioning. He’s been going through various levels of the British justice system, attempting to stop that from happening. While some say he should head to Sweden to face the music — guilty or otherwise — others support his claim that the Swedish allegations are a ruse orchestrated by U.S. authorities to crack down on his site and its secrets. Big-name celebs and respected journalists and writers, including the likes of Jemima Khan, Tariq Ali and director Ken Loach opened their wallets for Assange in December, collectively fronting a more than $375,000 bond to spring Assange from jail. Unfortunately it now appears they might never see that cash again, as Scotland Yard announced on Wednesday that Assange’s actions count as a breach of his bail terms. Khan tweeted her dismay on Monday: @iankatz1000 Yes. I had expected him to face the allegations. I am as surprised as anyone by this.— Jemima Khan (@Jemima_Khan) June 19, 2012 Meanwhile, Ecuadorian ambassador Anna Alban has said its government is considering Assange’s application in statement reading, “the decision on Mr Assange’s application would be assessed by the department of foreign affairs in Quito and would take into account Ecuador’s long and well-established tradition in supporting human rights.”

Jack Osbourne, the reality TV star who was first launched into the public eye a decade ago alongside his famously obscene family on The Osbournes and later carved out his own TV niche with the show Jack Osbourne: Adrenaline Junkie, has revealed he suffers from Multiple Sclerosis (MS). The 26-year-old discovered he had the autoimmune disease after he lost 60% of the vision in his right eye earlier this year. Multiple sclerosis affects the nervous system by damaging the protective sheath that surrounds the nerve fibers of the brain and spinal cord. It’s often diagnosed during young adulthood and can lead to speech difficulties, loss of coordination, blindness and chronic pain. Yet not all cases of MS are the same: while some sufferers experience rapid and debilitating deterioration, others spend years with only the mildest of symptoms. “While I was waiting for the final results, I got really, really angry,” Jack told the tabloid magazine Hello! in an interview. “Then I got really sad for about two days, and after that I realized, being angry and upset is not going to do anything at this point – if anything it’s only going to make it worse. ‘Adapt and overcome’ is my new motto.” The news, which came just three weeks after Osbourne’s fiancée Lisa Stelly gave birth to their baby daughter, Pearl Clementine, has reportedly rocked the whole family. While former X-Factor judge Sharon and former Black Sabbath rocker Ozzy have both expressed feelings of guilt over their son’s diagnosis, there is no known definitive cause of MS. There is also no known cure, though Osbourne has said he plans to treat the disease with a combination of daily medications and holistic treatments.

Correction Appended June 6, 2012. Grisly packages were delivered to two Vancouver schools on Tuesday, potentially bringing a horrifying murder investigation back home to Canada. Vancouver police deputy chief Warren Lemcke told reporters that a package containing a human hand was delivered to False Creek Elementary School early Tuesday afternoon. The school’s principal told the Globe and Mail that a secretary received the “suspicious, smelly package,” and it was soon reported to the police. An hour later, another package containing human foot was delivered to the private boy’s school St. George’s. (A third package discovered in Montreal, containing what appeared to be a human foot, was later determined to be fake.) (MORE: Porn Star Mail Murderer Arrested in Germany) Though investigators have yet to make any conclusive identifications of the body parts, many are already linking the gruesome deliveries to the murder and dismemberment of Jun Lin, a 33-year-old Chinese citizen who was studying at Montreal’s Concordia University. Lin’s murder first made headlines when packages containing parts of his then-unidentified body were sent to the headquarters of two major Canadian political parties. His discarded torso was subsequently discovered stuffed in suitcase in Montreal outside the apartment of his boyfriend, a porn actor named Luka Rocco Magnotta. By the time a grisly video of Lin’s murder and dismemberment — thought to have been posted by Magnotta — was discovered online, Magnotta had fled the country. He made his way to France and then Berlin, where he was spotted and arrested by German police. Magnotta, born Eric Clinton Newman, was taken into custody Monday afternoon after a cafe employee alerted the police to his whereabouts. The employee, Kadir Anlayisli, reportedly recognized the suspected killer when he saw Magnotta reading stories about himself online. Video footage from the arrest shows that seven Berlin police officers entered the business, and after some discussion, Magnotta consented to arrest. “He tried to give a false name. When he realized that he couldn’t escape the situation, he said, ‘You’ve got me,’” a Berlin police spokesperson told the National Post.
It began with the delivery of a package, and ended with an international manhunt that resulted in the arrest of a Canadian porn star in a Berlin internet cafe. Sandwiched between the two events are the grisly details of one of the most disturbing murders in recent history. (LIST: The Most Notorious Crimes of the 20th Century) On May 28, news broke that a package containing a human foot had been delivered to the headquarters of Canada’s Conservative Party in Ottawa. A short while later came the news that another package was found, this time at an Ottawa postal station and addressed to the Liberal Party office. Inside it was a dismembered hand. That same day, police had discovered a human torso stuffed in a suitcase near some garbage bins outside a Montreal apartment. And inside that apartment building lived a 29-year-old porn actor named Luka Rocco Magnotta. Police soon identified the actor as the suspect, believing he had killed and dismembered Jun Lin, a 33-year-old Chinese citizen and student at Montreal’s Concordia University, who was known to date Magnotta. (MORE: Manhunt Ensues for Canadian Mail Murder Suspect) Though the discovery of the body parts already made for grim headlines, the unearthing of a “snuff film” — a video of the murder taking place — on a Canadian website added another layer of horror. Called “1 Lunatic 1 Ice-Pick”, the 11-minute video depicts the murder, sexual assault and dismemberment of Lin. Canadian police say they believe the video is authentic. Magnotta, who has also been known by the names Eric Clinton Newman and Vladimir Romanov, had a disturbing online presence and promptly became a suspect. News stories revealed that he had once been thought to have once dated a notorious Canadian serial killer, had blogged about necrophilia and posted a video online showing him suffocating kittens. (MORE: Student Charged in Cannibalistic Slaying of Housemate) Yet before police had even discovered the body parts or the video, Magnotta had apparently boarded a plane for France. Interpol placed him on their equivalent

In her final essay to her classmates, 22-year-old Yale student Marina Keegan penned an ode to life at the university she was preparing to leave. At the time, no one knew it would be her final essay altogether. On May 26, just days after graduating, Keegan and her boyfriend Michael Gocksch were driving on Cape Cod, Mass., when Gocksch lost control of the car; it went off the road and rolled at least twice. Gocksch was taken to the hospital and later released. Keegan was declared dead at the scene. The promising young English major had been the president of the Yale Young Democrats and an active part of her college’s branch of the Occupy Wall Street movement. A promising writer, she had already penned articles for NPR and The New York Times and blogged for The New Yorker, where she was set to start work as an assistant to the general counsel in June. “She was so excited she was going to start work there — that’s all she talked about,” her mother Tracy Keegan told the New York Daily News. But the most affecting part of Keegan’s legacy is the essay she wrote for a special edition of the Yale Daily News that was distributed at the college’s commencement ceremony. Titled “The Opposite of Loneliness,” — which the Yale Daily News published online following Keegan’s death — it’s a buoyant, earnest and hopeful rumination on life during and beyond college. “We don’t have a word for the opposite of loneliness, but if we did, I’d say that’s how I feel at Yale,” Keegan wrote. “How I feel right now. Here. With all of you. In love, impressed, humbled, scared. And we don’t have to lose that. We’re in this together, 2012. Let’s make something happen to this world.” Exuberant and inspiring, Keegan’s piece is about living life to the fullest. It’s also deeply saddening in light of her death and the lines which resonate the most are the ones that likely weren’t intended to carry much meaning. “We’re

The American bridal industry brings in an estimated $40 billion every year. So it’s not exactly surprising that companies with no ostensible link to marital bliss would still want to find a way to cash in. Which could be why the company that unleashed sheepskin boots on an unsuspecting world is now jumping into the wedding market. Ugg Australia has unveiled a new “I Do!” capsule collection, featuring a line of fuzzy footwear for a bride’s big day with the slogan, “Your wedding just got cozier.” And, no, this is not a joke. The line includes the Sparkles boot, which has the classic Ugg shape and is bedazzled in white and pink iridescent sequins ($190); the Bailey Bling boot, which comes in a silvery hue and has a Swarovski crystal button ($225); and the Fluff Flip-Flop, a shearling covered sandal that looks like pretty much exactly what it sounds like ($80). Horrified? You’re not alone. The online fashion community almost instantaneously denounced the shoes and it’s not hard to see why. Yes, an argument could be made for the boots’ comfortableness, but the same argument could be made for Crocs. Or slippers. Or old gym socks. Either way, not the look most of us would want to sport on our trip down the aisle. What bride dreams of her groom looking her up and down on their big day and whispering tenderly, “My darling, you look so… comfy”? And even if we could ignore the fact that the vast majority of weddings take place in the spring and summer months — making fur-lined boots a bit impractical– the “I Do!” line looks as if it was designed for the same demographic that would peruse the Disney Princess collection, rather than an actual grown woman who can legally marry. Our advice: if you want cozy, grab a Snuggie. If you want to walk down the aisle, put on a real pair of shoes.

Correction Appended, May 29 2012 As Queen Elizabeth II celebrates her Diamond Jubilee and millions around the world prepare to honor her 60-year reign, that “long live the Queen” feeling is at its peak. But the monarch also recently celebrated her 86th birthday, and sadly, nothing lasts forever: so in a recent survey Britons were asked, if given the choice, whom they’d like to see the crown pass to next. (BUY THE BOOK: The Royal Family: The House of Windsor, Past, Present and Future) While Prince Charles is next in line for the throne, his popularity has waxed and waned over the years, prompting occasional calls for William, his eldest son, to jump the line and serve next. With the June 2–5 Jubilee weekend fast approaching, the polling firm Ipsos MORI attempted to gauge the current sentiment on the royal family. It was close, but the majority of Britons would prefer to follow the rules of the royals, with Charles following in his mother’s footsteps as monarch. According to the poll, 51% of Britons thought Charles should succeed the Queen, while 40% would prefer the crown go to William. It might not seem like much of a victory, but the Prince of Wales has never had a lot of luck when it comes to popularity contests. After he and the beloved Princess Diana split, Charles saw his favorability ratings plummet. After Diana’s death in a 1997 car accident, Charles’ popularity sank even further. In the days following her death, more Britons thought William — then only 15 years old — should be the next King than thought Charles should. (MORE: The Stamp of Her Influence — A Diamond Jubilee) While the Prince has largely made his way back into the public’s esteem, it’s still hard to compete with his son’s youth and charm. As Tom Mludzinski, deputy head of political research at Ipsos MORI, said in a statement: “Of course Prince Charles is next in line, but younger people in particular would like to see Prince William succeed as King.” It’s not hard to imagine why
