Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has dealt with his fair share of criticism for being racist, majorly insensitive and all-around ignorant. And now, he’s facing questions about whether or not he smoked crack, after reporters at Gawker and the Toronto Star insist that they’ve seen video proof. According to a report from the Star: [The video] appears to show Ford in a room, sitting in a chair, wearing a white shirt, top buttons open, inhaling from what appears to be a glass crack pipe. Ford is incoherent, trading jibes with an off-camera speaker who goads the clearly impaired mayor by raising topics including Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau and the Don Bosco high school football team Ford coaches. The conservative mayor dismissed the allegations, deeming them “ridiculous” and “absolutely not true.” He declined to comment further. (VIDEO: Canadian Parliament Debates Zombie Invasion) So far, there’s been no way to verify the authenticity of the video. Gawker editor John Cook reports that the owners of the footage are requesting $200,000 for it, and so, naturally, Gawker is crowdfunding in an effort to purchase it. By Saturday morning, the Rob Ford Crackstarter (yup) had raised around $50,000 from more than 1,900 funders. Cook explains the publication’s methodology: We are mindful that people who hang out with and surreptitiously record crack-smoking mayors may not always be reliable. The people we’ve been dealing with have so far honored every commitment they’ve made. And they have pledged to sell it to us for $200,000 if this Crackstarter works. But if they disappear, or sell it elsewhere, we will donate every penny we receive to a Canadian non-profit that helps people suffering from addiction and its consequences. Although this is certainly the most serious allegation made against the mayor yet, this clearly isn’t the first controversy he’s sparked. The Star rounded up 42 remarkable moments from his career, and the list includes plenty of misguided and otherwise befuddling statements Ford has made over the years. And for the unacquainted, Gawker’s got a less comprehensive introduction to all things Rob Ford. So now what? We’ll add this burgeoning scandal to the impressively long list of Rob

Isn’t It Ironic: This Sunday is Mother’s Day, but brace yourselves while we hit you with some knowledge about the holiday. The founder of the original Mother’s Day later fought to have it abolished. (mental_floss) Mother Nature: Who better to demonstrate the specialness of a mother’s love than some exceptionally cute and nurturing animals? (BuzzFeed) Haven’t Bought a Gift Yet?: There’s an app for that. Actually, there are several apps for that. (Los Angeles Times) #FollowTheseMoms: In honor of the holiday, take out your smart phone and start following some of these moms on Instagram, who’ve got compelling stories to tell and unique photos to share. (TIME.com) Moms of the Met Gala: Check out these recently-released photos from this week’s Metropolitan Museum of Art Gala. You’ll spot plenty of celebrity moms on the Red Carpet, including Julianne Moore, Leslie Mann and Alicia Keys. (Go Fug Yourself) Diss from Mrs. Doubtfire: Robin Williams tweeted a dig at Kim Kardashian, poking fun at the soon-to-be-mom’s latest fashion choice. (The Daily What) Sunday Cinema: Read this review of The Reluctant Fundamentalist and if it tickles your fancy, why not take your mom to go see it? (Divanee) Fine Dining: Still unsure where to take mom for a special Mother’s Day meal? Well, just so you know, Hooter’s is offering a free meal to any mom who brings her kid along. Because, you know, why not? (Huffington Post) Mean Moms: Pop culture tends to feature plenty of loving, friendly moms, but it certainly has its share of mean ones too. Our only question: where’s the mention of Arrested Development’s delightfully cruel Lucille Bluth? (The Daily Beast) Special Guest: Moms, grandmothers and children gathered at the White House yesterday for a Mother’s Day Tea. And then everyone’s favorite mom Michelle Obama introduced Prince Harry. It’s not exactly clear why he attended, but nobody seemed to complain. (People)

Well, this is awkward. Members of the Parkham Women’s Institute in southwest England decided to dress up like pirates for a recent talk with a former sea captain. Sure, that sounds pretty benign, but what they didn’t realize is that he’d been held hostage by Somali pirates. Eek. According to the North Devon Journal, the members of the organization thought Captain Colin Darch would be stopping by to discuss piracy in general, not the harrowing personal tale of his 47 days as a hostage in 2008. (MORE: Navy Looking to Use Helicopter Drones to Hunt Pirates) Luckily, the blunder didn’t seem to bother the former captain or dredge up painful memories of those weeks at sea. “Of course I didn’t take offence or mind. It was more like the Pirates of Penzance,” he told the newspaper. He made sure to scan the costumes — which included skull-and-crossbones hats, neckerchiefs and and plenty of eyepatches — and choose his favorite. (He settled on a get-up that included a toy parrot.) Darch, 75, was eventually freed after the owners of the Danish boat he’d been working on paid approximately $450,000 in ransom. He’s now safe and sound, and apparently still has a sense of humor given his reaction to the ladies’ costumes. So in the end, everyone got a good (but still pretty awkward) laugh about it, and the Parkham Women’s Institute seems to have learned its lesson. “He was such a good sport,” the group’s treasurer, Steph George, told the BBC. “But we won’t be dressing up again for a while.” MORE: American Hostage Deaths: A Case of Pirate Anxiety

What the Doctor Ordered: It’s Monday. Chances are you could use some cute animals today — particularly ones who totally empathize with how you feel right now. (BuzzFeed) What Do You Call That? In case you were wondering, the technical term for a baby skunk is not, in fact, “baby skunk.” It’s “kit.” Click here to learn 9 other obscure names for baby animals. Side note: baby skunks are strangely adorable. (mental_floss) Wombat Appreciation: These stubby-legged marsupials are grossly under-appreciated in the world of cute animals on the Internet. It’s not acceptable, and it needs to end now. Click here for a video of a gentle, cuddly wombat enjoying some high-quality, belly-rub time. If this doesn’t lead you to join Team Wombat, nothing will. (The Daily What) Dog Rides Sheep: Need we say more? This photo is a must-see. (Huffington Post) Famous Felines: Even the world’s most accomplished artists love cute animals. Check out these beautiful (and awesome) photos of famous artists with their pet cats. This all makes perfect sense because cats are the muses of the world. (Flavorwire) Awesome Job Alert: If you love looking at animals when you should be doing your job, why not turn looking at animals into your job? A Norwegian island is seeking a polar bear spotter. Apply now! (TIME.com) Last But Clearly Not Least: A valiant young corgi took on an evil spoon in an impossibly adorable duel, and the Internet was there to document it. Who wins? You’ll just have to watch.
Fashion, sex, beauty … and socialism? All of that and more in Cosmarxpolitan, the new (faux) magazine hot off the Tumblr presses. The new blog riffs on the notoriously over-the-top cover lines and headlines found in Cosmo, translating them into a handy guidebook for the average Bolshevik babe. With the tagline “fun, fearless freedom from the oppression of capitalism,” Cosmarxpolitan serves up double entendre after double entendre. (See: “So divine, he’ll call you the opiate of his masses” and “Seize the means of his production”). (MORE: Tumblr of the Week: Famous Movies Scenes as Seen Through Google Street View) According to the site’s FAQ section, Cosmarxpolitan is the brainchild of “smug college students with too much time on our hands.” The creators also clarify that their intention is “to ridicule the awful advice and backwards attitudes of magazines targeted at women; not to poke fun at those who suffered under communist rulers.” So that clears things up. Everything marginally related to Communism is fair game in Cosmarxpolitan, with cover teasers like ”The REAL Bay of Pigs disaster: 50+ bikini horries stories!” and “Mao suits: sexy or skanky?” Also featured are “hot new interrogation tips and tricks straight from the secret police” to help you get your man to open up, along with the best ways to “build a gulag archipelago on a budget!” The new Tumblr might have some seeing red, but in our book, the impressive number of historical references and the expert recreation of Cosmo’s tone earn the blog high Marx.
Brush Up on the Bluths: Arrested Development returns on May 26th. That leaves ample time to test your knowledge on all things Bluth. (And ample time for non-fans to catch up on the first three seasons.) But proceed with caution as you take this new quiz; you don’t want to find yourself saying, “I’ve made a huge mistake.” (mental_floss) Instant Gratification: So you know that May 26 is the big day — and you’re super pumped. But you want to know the exact time when the new episodes hit Netflix. And now you can. (Gizmodo) From Model Home to Red Carpet: Assess the cast members’ fashion choices with these photos from Monday’s premiere in Los Angeles. (Go Fug Yourself) You Need All of This: For all you never-nudes: new jean shorts! For those of you who’ve caught a chill from eating too many frozen bananas: a banana scarf! Here are 15 pieces of Arrested merch you definitely need. (BuzzFeed) Drink Tea, Come On!: In a season two episode called “Sword of Destiny,” Gob attempts to acquire some tea for … personal reasons. He ends up buying an ancient sword, but maybe he should have gone with the herbal remedy instead. Click here to read up on the many health benefits of tea. (Divanee) In Case You Missed It: Netflix recently released a clip from the new season, with the following description: “Lucille finds a way to get around the building’s strict no-smoking policy and the fact that her ankle monitor prevents her from approaching the balcony.” Naturally, her son Buster plays a key role. (The Wrap) Questions for a Never-Nude: Ever wonder what David Cross, who plays Tobias Fünke, is really like? Read TIME’s 2009 interview with the actor and comedian. (TIME.com) Taste the Happy: Following a successful Kickstarter campaign, the Arrested Development documentary has finally arrived. As of today, the doc will be available via FilmBuff on iTunes, Amazon Instant, cable and more. The excitement makes us want to pump our fists in the air and shout, “Steve Holt!” (USA Today) A Flawless Compilation: Still asking what’s so great about the Bluths? We don’t understand the question,

Just Hangin’ Around: If you forgot to celebrate Arbor Day (which was this past Friday), don’t worry about it. You can still celebrate. Start with these photos of goats standing in trees. No, they’re not ‘shopped. Nature! (The Huffington Post) Natural Wonders: Continue to get yourself into the spirit with these 16 amazing stories about trees, plus eight bonus fun facts. (mental_floss) Think Ink: One of the best things about trees, obviously, is that they serve as a great hangout for sloths. If you’re a fan of the animals, why not pay permanent homage to the adorably lazy creatures with a brand new sloth tattoo? Check out this list if you need some inspiration. (BuzzFeed) Another Option: Okay, so you don’t want to get a sloth permanently inked on your body. Understandable. How about a tattoo of Larry David instead? These are all pretty, pretty, pretty good. (BuzzFeed) Sounds of Starvation: A team of physicists in France discovered that trees make certain sounds when they’re starved for water — as opposed to when they’re just thirsty. Listen here. (NPR) Go Out on a Limb: Treat yourself to a belated Arbor Day vacation and stay at one of the world’s coolest tree house hotels. (Travel + Leisure) Family Tree: Now, let’s branch out and pay some homage to another kind of tree: the royal family tree. If you were wondering (and we know you were), yesterday, Prince William and Kate Middleton celebrated their second wedding anniversary. (TIME.com) The Great Indoors: Staying inside to play some video games instead of going outside to hang out with trees? We’re not judging. Why not make an art project out of it and craft your very own functional plush game controller? (The Daily What) The Best Kind of Trees: Are obviously Fake Plastic Trees. Enjoy this video of everybody’s favorite falsetto-crooning R&B singer, Frank Ocean, covering the classic Radiohead tune.
On Saturday night, Hollywood and Washington notables gathered for the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner in DC. Though recently touted as “nerd prom,” the affair has become a yearly excuse for the press to poke fun at Washington, for Washington to poke fun at the press and for everyone to poke fun at Joe Biden. (In other words, a rollicking good time.) The event also offers the president an opportunity to show off his comedy chops, and for the second year in a row, President Obama did not disappoint. He fired off jabs at everyone and everything from CNN to Taylor Swift to George W. Bush’s new presidential library. And, proving himself to be the hippest commander in chief ever, he even snuck in references to Jay-Z lyrics and BuzzFeed. And as any good comedian does, he also worked in a few quips at his own expense. “These days, I look in the mirror and I have to admit,” he said, “I’m not the strapping young Muslim socialist I used to be.” (PHOTOS: At the White House Correspondents’ Dinner) Obama also found some opportunities to poke fun at himself and the media all in one. He discussed his poor basketball skills at the recent White House Easter Egg Hunt: “I took 22 shots and made two of them. Two hits and twenty misses. The executives at NBC asked, ‘What’s your secret?’” CNN wasn’t safe from his snark either: “I admire their commitment to covering all sides of the story, just in case one of them happens to be accurate.” Here are some highlights from Obama’s turn at the mic: The President made a hard act to follow for Conan O’Brien, who served as the night’s comedy headliner. O’Brien also riffed heavily on the media: “I see the Huffington Post has a table. If you’re here, who’s covering Miley Cyrus’ latest nip slip?” The late-night veteran also directed some jabs toward the GOP, mentioning Senator Marco Rubio, “or, as he’s known in the Republican party, ‘our black guy.’” O’Brien then released this zinger toward Obama: “Your hair

Animal Abuse: Corgis are the ultimate Internet darlings (for obvious reasons). But that fame sometimes comes at a high price: the fluffy little pups often end up sporting ridiculous costumes against their will. But no matter the disguise, we can always spot the corgi underneath. (BuzzFeed) Dog Show: On particularly special occasions, dogs get dressed up and proudly strut their stylish stuff for the whole world to see. Click here for photos from last month’s Crufts Dog Show, where one dog even wore a tiger-print coat. (TIME.com) In Disguise: Animal costumes doesn’t exist solely because we find them adorable and amusing — sometimes they exist because, you know, nature and survival and stuff. Click here to read up on the animal kingdom’s newest kings of camouflage: octopi. (mental_floss) Nice Look: Here’s a round-up of some of the strangest disguises (er, outfits) seen at last week’s Coachella Music Festival in California. (Go Fug Yourself) You Go Girl: We’d like to take this opportunity to offer a special shout-out to the brilliant Mindy Kaling, who, although not an animal in disguise, recently won a Gracie Award for “Outstanding Producer—Entertainment” for her Fox TV show “The Mindy Project.” (Divanee) In other unrelated news: There’s a new app on the market called “Fake Shower.” It mimics the sound of running water, allowing you to cover up any noises you might be making in the bathroom, but without wasting water. Practical and sustainable! (The Daily What) For good measure: Here’s a look back at the 57 greatest pet costumes ever. Some are extremely elaborate, and very few will disappoint. (BuzzFeed) No Words: Once upon a time, a cat dressed up as a shark and rode around on a Roomba vacuum while chasing a duckling. Because of course it did.
It’s Philly Tech Week, in case you haven’t heard — and to kick off the festivities gamers played a few rounds of classic arcade game Pong on the side of a skyscraper. Because, you know, why not? Billed as “The Grandest Game of Pong on the Planet,” the project is the brainchild of Frank Lee, a professor at Drexel University and the director of the school’s game development program. The massive LED display that serves as the game’s screen took up the entire 410-foot-tall wall of the Cira Centre in West Philadelphia on April 19th, and will return on April 24th. Potential players applied through a lottery for their chance at a round. (MORE: Happy Birthday, Pong) “The idea for this project began in 2008 when I was driving East on I-76 in Philadelphia at night heading towards Center City,” Lee writes on his website. “I saw the sparkling lights of the beautiful Cira Centre building … In my mind’s eye I saw Tetris shapes outlined by those lights rotating and falling. Thus began my long journey to make a game out of those lights.” And while Tetris doesn’t appear to have worked out, the massive version of the classic Atari tennis game is arguably even cooler. Lee spent about five years developing the project — with a good portion of that time dedicated to lobbying the realty group that owns the skyscraper. The folks over at Technically Philly have documented the projection’s evolution here. As seen in the video, the result is rather mesmerizing.
The Stupendous Stacking Dog: Warning: this will likely make you feel inadequate. This extraordinary canine can balance anything — and we mean anything — on his head. A tea kettle, a glass of water, an egg: you name it, he’ll stack it. What have you done today? (BuzzFeed) Railways to Riches: Click here for photos of transformative triumphs: 10 beautifully repurposed railway stations across the globe. (Flavorwire) Frozen Feat: Baskin Robbins previously held the Guinness World Record for largest tub of ice cream (8,865 lbs., for inquiring minds.) But Iran’s Choopan Dairy claims to have usurped the crown with its five-ton tub of the sweet stuff. Apparently, it took eight hours (and more than $30,000 worth of ice cream) to fill the giant container. One question: how long did it take to melt? (The Daily What) Helpers and Heroes: Terrorism in Boston last week made way for plenty of amazing feats of pure selflessness. Read here about 10 of the heroes who emerged during the tragedy. But first, you might want to grab some tissues. (mental_floss) Long Distance Problems, Solved: At last, a solution to long distance love has come along. Your lonely days are over, and life will be like a song. A new app allows romantic partners to touch one another remotely with the help of some high-tech undies. Sound a bit confusing? This (slightly NSFW) video explains how the system works. The undies and app aren’t available for widespread purchase just yet, but please, have patience, young lovers! (TIME.com) Shake, Shake, Shake: A new project called Infinity Cell lets you charge your iPhone by shaking it, meaning you’ll never have to worry about misplacing your charger again. Only drawback: the current prototype would require you to shake the device for three hours to get a full charge. (TechCrunch) Synchronized Danger: 30 Canadian skiers teamed up, held hands and attempted a simultaneous backflip on the slopes. Thankfully, nobody went to the hospital. (TIME.com)

A first day at a new job is always bound to be a bit tough, maybe riddled with some rookie mistakes. Unfortunately for A.J. Clemente, his first-day blunders ended up getting him fired. The young broadcaster’s new gig as an anchor for North Dakota NBC affiliate KFYR ended almost as quickly as it began after he was heard mumbling a few choice words (for example, an f-bomb) in the first seconds of the station’s evening report. His (now former) co-anchor Van Tieu attempted to recover after the quiet outburst, but what resulted was an obviously strained, tense segment. (VIDEO: Fox Anchor Caught Dancing to Beyoncé) “That couldn’t have gone any worse!” Clemente tweeted afterward, acknowledging his mistake. Turns out he was rehearsing some of his material and didn’t realize his mic was on. Though it sounds like he utters the word “gay” along with his swear words, he clarified on Twitter that he was trying to pronounce the name of London Marathon winner Tsegaye Kebede. The news station offered an apology for the incident a few hours later, during the 10 p.m. newscast. Clemente also apologized on Twitter: Tough day,Thanks for the support,We all make mistakes. Im truly sorry for mine. I'll try my hardest to come back better and learn from this.— A.J. Clemente (@ClementeAJ) April 22, 2013 When the news spread that KFYR decided to let Clemente go, Twitter users showed their support with the hashtag #KeepAJ. In the meantime, Clemente seems to be keeping a positive attitude. Even if he doesn’t get his gig back, NewsFeed hopes he enjoys his 15 minutes of viral fame. Rookie mistake. I'm a free agent.Cant help but laugh at myself and stay positive.Wish i didnt trip over my "Freaking Shoes" out of the gate.— A.J.
When you’re a journalist and news breaks, sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do. Take, for example, Chinese TV reporter Chen Ying, who covered the deadly earthquake that jolted China’s Sichuan province this week while wearing her wedding dress. (PHOTOS: Deadly Earthquake Strikes China’s Sichuan Province) ABC News reports that it’s unclear whether the earthquake hit in the middle of Chen’s wedding, or if it struck while she was still prepping for the ceremony. Either way, video shows her reporting on the breaking news in full bridal regalia, complete with her veil and wrist corsage. Chen interviewed local residents affected by the 7.0-magnitude quake, which hit the city of Ya’an leaving at least 188 people dead, more than 11,000 injured and another 25 missing. According to the South China Morning Post, an image of the reporter-bride soon went viral on Chinese social media, with many users lauding her “professional spirit” — and her bridal beauty. Reports indicate that Chen eventually did take a break to say her vows — and then returned to work.
Earth from Above: Sometimes, we all need a reminder that the Earth is in fact rather beautiful. These satellite images, all acquired from Google Earth, highlight our planet’s natural fractal patterns, from the ice of Greenland to the waters of Spain. (Flavorwire) Recycling, Explained: Today, help save the Earth by recycling some stuff, then educate yourself on what all those cryptic recycling symbols and codes mean anyway. Actually, you may want to do that part first. (mental_floss) What Makes the Earth Go ‘Round: From cuddly koalas and huggable hamsters to sensitive sloths and considerate kittens, these animals know what love is. And as we all know, love makes the world go ’round. Also, cute animals. (BuzzFeed) The Earth’s Mass is 6 Sextillion Tons: And 14 other fun tidbits — plus one bonus fact — about the planet we call home. (Slate) A Run Around the World: Looking for a great way to see the Earth? Try “ultrarunning.” Races can last for weeks at a time, and crisscross every corner of the world, from Colorado to Greece to Nepal. (The New York Times) The Coldest City on Earth: Plenty of people are worried that the planet is warming up, but they’re probably not too concerned about that in Yakutsk, Siberia. Click here to see photos from what’s considered the coldest city on earth, although you might want to grab a sweater. (TIME.com) And a Tribute to Space: We’re celebrating Earth today, but here’s a special shout-out to the zero-gravity parts of our universe. Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield, who’s been tweeting photos and recording duets with the Barenaked Ladies from his post aboard the International Space Station, shows happens when you wring out a washcloth in space. A mundane activity on Earth, yes, but in space, the result is oddly enthralling.
