The ideals of personal freedom and unbridled adventure embraced by Harley-Davidson motorcycle riders may not seem particularly compatible with those of the Roman Catholic Church, which tends to favor self-sacrifice over self-expression. But on Sunday the two groups found common ground at St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City, where Pope Francis blessed the 35,000 Harley riders from around the globe who had gathered there as part of a 4-day celebration of the American motorcycle maker’s 110th anniversary. The engine noise was so loud, it made the traditional Latin rendition of the Our Father prayer inaudible, according to BBC News. And while the Argentine leader of the Catholic Church did not address the leather-clad and bandana-wearing legion by name, he did lay his hands on a disabled boy accompanied by a Harley-Davidson motorcyclist. In a show of support for the 266th Pope, some riders decorated their bikes with flags imprinted with Francis’ smiling face. On Wednesday, Harley-Davidson gave Pope Francis two white Harleys to use in the Vatican police force. Vatican spokesman, Rev. Federico Lombardi, said the papal Mass is welcome to all, telling the Associated Press, “I know great people who have big bikes.” Here are more photos from the high-spirited gathering: Stefano Rellandini / Reuters Pope Francis blesses the Harley Davidson bikers from his Popemobile before the start of a mass outside Saint Peter’s Square in Rome, June 16, 2013.
As one German banker can tell you, nodding off at your desk can cost you. In this case, a quick workplace nap almost cost one woman her job and caused a $293 million banking error. The clerk “momentarily fell asleep” on the job and accidentally held down the number 2 button on his keyboard for a little too long — think 222,222,222.22 — causing that much money (in Euros) to be transferred out of the bank. (MORE: Oregon Burglar Falls Asleep While Robbing a House) While the mistake was eventually noticed and corrected, the on-duty supervisor originally approved the payment request, allowing the funds to go through. On further review of the supervisor’s records, it was discovered that the 48-year-old woman had spent less than 1.4 seconds to examine a total of 603 payments. She was fired for not catching the glaring error — although after bringing her case to court was given her job back — while the snoozing clerk was only handed a slap on the wrist. So the next time you’re feeling a little drowsy on the job, you might want to take an extra cup of coffee instead of a power nap.
In news that’s sure to upset germophobes everywhere, a study from Michigan State University has found that 95% of people do not wash their hands properly. According to the New York Times, the study’s authors dispatched twelve undercover researchers to public restrooms in a college town in Michigan, where they surreptitiously monitored 3,749 people as they scrubbed, rinsed, or just zipped up their pants and left. (MORE: Could Hand-washing Boost Your Workplace Productivity?) The researchers found that for every 100 people observed, only five washed their hands properly, meaning they washed their hands with soap for at least 15 seconds. The Atlantic notes that even this standard falls short of the CDC’s guidelines, which advise a good twenty-second scrub of the hands (front, back, between the fingers and under the nails) or long enough to hum the “Happy Birthday” song twice. The remaining 95% showed a widespread disregard for the CDC’s, researchers’, or even a typical parent’s daily reminders. Twenty-three percent washed without soap. Another ten percent didn’t wash their hands at all. Men, in particular, could use a refresher course on hygiene. Researchers saw only half of the men reach for the soap dispenser, compared with 79% of women. The authors published their findings in the June issue of the Journal of Environmental Health. (MORE: How Hand-washing Helps Ease Your Mind) The results surprised the study’s authors, who had seen much higher rates of hygienic behavior in previous hand-washing studies, according to CBS News. And yes, hand washing does comprise an entire field of study. The CDC notes that the simple act of hand washing is one of the “most effective” things someone can do to prevent the spread of infectious diseases, while the WHO has designated October 15, “Global Handwashing Day,” because, as the organizers note, “the habit of handwashing could save more lives than any single vaccine or medical intervention.”

While The Great Gatsby’s director Baz Luhrmann used hip hop to give modern-day relevance to the film’s fevered parties, a group of students from the University of California-Los Angeles made F. Scott Fitzgerald’s story even more relevant – by setting it in a frat house. UCLA’s comedy troupe Spring Sing Company created a spoof trailer featuring “Fratsby”, who teaches a new recruit the ways of Frat Row. (Here’s the original trailer.) “I’ll tell you God’s truth about myself. I was a loser in high school. Look at me now, I’m awesome,” coaches Fratsby, who goes on to show off his preppy combover and his array of pastel-coloured “short shorts”. (MORE: Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby: From Jazz Age to Baz Age) The new guy is quickly sucked into the fray: “The houses were chiller. The parties were bigger. The nights were longer and the Thursdays were thirstier.” Come to think of it, maybe it’s worth considering the striking similarities between Prohibition in the Jazz Age and underage college drinking.
Fragrance maker Firmenich claims its perfumes can recreate the “true” scent of human skin. Now it has captured the essence of Britain’s hottest boy band, One Direction. In a handwritten note posted online last Thursday, the band’s members announced the launch of their pink-hued fragrance, “Our Moment,” which was developed in collaboration with Firmenich. “We’ve loved every step of creating this special fragrance for you, our incredible fans. We are very proud of it and hope you love ‘Our Moment’ as much as we do,” read the note, which was signed, “We love you. XX, 1D.” (More: Seven Things Adults Can Love About One Direction) The perfume gets its name from the song “Moments,” off the group’s first album, “Up All Night.” Upon opening the jewel-cut bottle’s silver-crowned lid — which houses a fake pink flower — fans will inhale a veritable smoothie of fruit juices, including pink grapefruit, wild berries and red currants, spiced with a dash of jasmine, musk and white patchouli. The scent will go on sale in the U.S. and Britain on August 25 for $33 to $61. According to Women’s Wear Daily, a shower gel, body lotion and rollerball version will be available in special holiday gift sets planned for later this year. The perfume is expected to rake in more than $120 million in first year sales, according to WWD. MORE: The One Direction NYC Pop-Up Store. Yes, It Exists.
Venezuela’s toilet-paper crisis has gotten so dire that some of the South American country’s 29 million residents have resorted to high-tech measures to get their hands on the scarce bathroom essential. A free Android app called Abastéceme (“Supply Me” in English) melds crowd-sourced information with Google maps to connect deprived shoppers with publicly-available caches of the stuff. Since it first became available on May 29, the app has been downloaded more than 10,000 times. (MORE: Bathroom Blues: Venezuela’s Toilet-Paper Crisis) Here’s how it works: Anyone can input locations where toilet paper is for sale. Shoppers can then search for products by price and location. Currently being used primarily for finding toilet paper, the app works for a handful of other items in short supply as well. Jose Augusto Montiel, who developed the app with his sister, told the Associated Press that toilet paper is the most sought after product on Abastéceme, followed by flour. Locals are also sharing information on the whereabouts of sugar, milk and cooking oil. Montiel told AP that he has gotten requests to add a feature that allows residents to search for chicken, butter and soap as well. While the South American country remains flush with oil, its populist policies, smuggling and government controls continue to choke the supply of basic goods. In 2007, milk, eggs and sugar could not be found on supermarket shelves. Next there was a wine and toilet-paper shortage. In mid-May, the country’s commerce minister announced the import of 50 million rolls of toilet paper, although monthly demand was estimated at more than twice that amount.
In a country where 117 baby boys are born for every 100 baby girls, it might come as no surprise that Chinese men of marriageable age are willing to pay for the privilege of securing a wife. What’s startling is just how much they’re willing to shell out. According to data published by Quartz on Sunday, men in the relatively wealthy eastern coastal province of Zhejiang typically pay $24,000 — more than three times their average annual income — to their future spouse’s family. The four other provinces where men pay the most for their wives are Shandong (where the going rate is $20,800), Shanghai ($16,000), Hubei ($12,800) and Tibet ($12,800). Quartz compiled the data provided by Vanke, a real estate company, and Sina, the Chinese-language portal. According to Quartz, the figures have “sparked debate around the nation about how the bride price tradition reflects an obsession with materialism and makes it hard for young Chinese couples to start families.” Chinese wages as a whole have tripled over the past decade, according to the International Labor Organization’s Global Wage Report. The average annual income in China ranged from $4,688 to $7,543 in 2012, according to a Wall Street Journal report based on data released by the country’s National Bureau of Statistics. And despite China’s recent economic slowdown, Zhejiang’s economy is still going strong, buoyed by the consumer-goods and mechanical-and-electrical-equipment industries, according to a report last month in the China Daily. (MORE: Chinese Grave Robbers Jailed for Selling Ghost Brides) While some may be quick to point to China’s lowest-in-the-world female-to-male ratio, the price of brides in various provinces doesn’t always reflect the disparity or economics of specific regions. The sixth highest “bride prices” were in areas where the female deficit is less pronounced, including Heilongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning provinces. The prices were also relatively high in economically weaker areas like Qinghai, which had the 15th highest rates out of the 29 regions compared. With an estimated 24 million more men than women, brides in the world’s most populous country have substantial bargaining power.
Celebrities — they’re not so different from the rest of us: they walk the same streets, they eat at the same restaurants, and occasionally they come to the rescue of a bleeding man in the street. The latter happened Thursday night when actor John Malkovich was walking down a Toronto street and noticed a man sprawled on the sidewalk, bleeding profusely from his neck. Jim Walpole, a 77-year-old tourist from Ohio, had tripped and slashed his neck on a scaffolding pole, according to ABC News. His wife yelled for help when, out of the blue, Malkovich appeared and applied a scarf to the injured man’s neck to stop the bleeding. Canada’s CTV News reported that Malkovich soothed the man as they waited for an ambulance to arrive, telling him that he was in good hands under the Canadian healthcare system. Walpole asked Malkovich for his name, and according to CBCNews, the actor simply and modestly replied, “John.” It wasn’t until later in the week that Walpole realized that he was in the caring hands of two-time Academy Award nominee John Malkovich. In typical superhero fashion (though it’s far from his normal role), Malkovich had disappeared from the scene by the time help had arrived. Malkovich’s actions follow in the footsteps of a number of other famous rescuers, from Dustin Hoffman to Ryan Gosling. Their actions serve to prove that heroes aren’t just on the screen — they’re in real life, too.
Stuck on Father’s Day gift ideas? You won’t go far wrong with the gift of bacon, says Oscar Mayer. The cold-cut and packaged-meat company has launched three gift packages for Father’s Day, each containing a packet of bacon strips inside a velvet jewelry box, accompanied by a choice of bacon-themed cufflinks, a multitool, or a money-clip engraved with the words “Bringin’ it home.” The video for the campaign, Say It With Bacon, features a man on a horse-drawn carriage opening a gift from his female lover and to his delight finding two pieces of pork belly inside. The scene follows with another man holding the lofty title of “Oscar Mayer Bacon cut and design chief” explaining the mystical complexities of cutting and curing the perfect bacon strip, and elevating the meat to a godlike status: “The bacon will tell you how it wants to be cut, all you have to do is listen, bacon will show you the way.” (MORE: Dunkin’ Donuts’ Doughnut Bacon Sandwich Isn’t as Bad as You Think) Tom Bick, Oscar Mayer’s senior marketing director, said in a press release this week: “Before, I was a statistic on Father’s Day. Like everyone else, I was showered with ties, coffee mugs and after shave over the years. But really, who wants a tie when you can have bacon?” The meat purveyor is no stranger to gimmicks. The most well-known are the Wienermobiles piloted by young Hotdoggers who have been traveling across the U.S. evangelizing the love for hot dogs since 1936. The gift packages cost between $22 to $28 each, shipping and handling included, and are available only on their website from June 4 to July 1.
In an interview with Time Out London this week, Daniel Radcliffe, star of the Harry Potter franchise, revealed that he would like to father a child before turning 30. “I really want to have kids. I’ve grown up around lots of people who were having kids when I knew them, because a lot of them were a lot older than me. And I saw the wonderful change in them. A lot more tired, a lot more happy,” said the 23-year-old actor. He’s got big aspirations for his future offspring too. “I’m definitely going to be one of those parents who pushes their kids into things,” he said, adding, “I’d love my kids to be a boxer. Yeah! Cricket too.” But the 5-ft., 5-in. actor quipped that he will have to find “a very tall wife” to ensure that any kids he has are good at sports. While he believes he’s too old to star as Harry Potter again, he says he would like to play the bespectacled boy’s dad. But that’s not his only career goal. Before hitting the big 3-0, Radcliffe also plans to direct a production and write a piece of work that he will be proud of. He’s also written his first screenplay. (MORE: ‘Harry Potter’ Book With Author Notes Sold for $228,000) For now, however, he’s sticking to acting. In The Cripple of Inishmaan, which debuts at the Noël Coward Theatre in London’s West End today, Radcliffe plays a bullied Irish country boy who tries to score a role in a Hollywood film being made on a nearby island. He’s well prepared to play a victim of bullies, telling the Guardian that he “really enjoys stage violence,” which he first learned from stuntmen on the Harry Potter set. He says he later made a hobby out of choreographing fight scenes on his lunch breaks. And the best question of all in the interview: when asked, “Why aren’t you a completely f—ed up egomanic?” despite becoming famous at age 11 and a multimillionaire by age 19, Radcliffe humbly

It all started out as an innocent joke. Now a Chicago-area high school student is facing misdemeanor charges for allegedly dumping a particularly scorching hot sauce into the school cafeteria’s marinara sauce. Three kitchen workers at Highland Park High School were sent to the hospital with symptoms of coughing, wheezing and skin rashes, according to a report by ABC News. Police said the workers did not ingest the sauce; rather they suffered a reaction by simply being near it, which begs the question: What sort of hot sauce could be so potent that just its fumes send people to the hospital? (More: Is your refrigerator running? Wisconsin legislator attempts to make prank calls illegal.) “I don’t think you can find this one in the store,” Highland Park police Deputy Chief George Pfutzenreuter told the Chicago Tribune of the Da’ Bomb brand hot sauce that was allegedly poured into the tomato sauce. According to the hot sauce maker’s website, the sauces range in intensity from a fiery 119,00 Scoville units to a scorching 1.5 million units, a heat level on par with pepper spray. Da’ Bomb claims that after one taste of its hot sauce, “Suddenly the world explodes in blinding flashes of heat all around you. You’re terrified. You want to hide, but there’s nowhere to go,” which may sound like a bit of an overstatement, but then this soldier’s reaction to the hot sauce, uploaded to YouTube, pretty much matches the company’s description word for word: Investigators are still trying to determine which of Da’ Bomb brand’s sauces made it into the marinara sauce. In the meantime, ABC News reports that the school will install security cameras in the cafeteria to ward off future pranksters, or at least capture their mischief on tape.
It looks like Americans are finally accepting gay marriage, even if nearly half still don’t approve of the same-sex unions. According to a new poll by the Pew Research Center, 72% of Americans say that legal recognition of gay marriage is inevitable, although only 51% actually approve of allowing it. The “rising sense of inevitability,” as the Pew researchers explained, was significant in groups that are usually reluctant to support gay marriage, including Republicans, seniors and white evangelical Protestants. Although the same-sex marriage issue remains divisive – with 42% saying they opposed making it legal and 45% believing homosexual behavior is a sin – opponents and supporters are resigned to its eventual legalization. Released Thursday, the Pew study included phone-survey responses from 1,504 adults in all 50 states who were polled in the first five days of May. (MORE: How Gay Marriage Won) The study also found that Americans are more accepting of being around gays and lesbians. 83% said it does not bother them to be around homosexuals, versus 76% a decade ago. Only 19% said they would be “very upset” if they found out their child was gay or lesbian; a big leap from 1985 when 64% said they would be. Most opposition is on religious or moral grounds. Half of white Evangelical Protestants (50%) and a little over half of African-Americans (52%) said they have an “unfavorable” view of gay men, while over eighty percent of liberal Democrats and white, college-educated women had “favorable” views towards gay men and lesbian women. Last year, TIME reported that public support for gay marriage had reached an “all-time high,” when President Obama “became the first major presidential candidate (not to mention sitting President) to voice support for gay marriage.” In his January 2012 inaugural speech, the President’s support was loud and clear. ”Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law,” he said amidst applause. The poll findings are timely as the U.S. Supreme Court is expected to issue verdicts on

“I’m happy being a prostitute.” That was one of the slogans the Brazilian health ministry posted online for several days this week until complaints from the nation’s growing ranks of Christian Evangelicals forced the ministry to replace the message on Wednesday with a much tamer one: “Not ashamed of using a condom.” Part of a broader web campaign for International Prostitute Day, the message was meant to destigmatize sex work and its associated health risks, according to a Reuters report. The campaign also encourages prostitutes to seek medical attention when needed. Another slogan read: “I cannot be seen without a condom, my love,” according to the Christian Post. (MORE: Two More South American Prostitution Scandals Emerge) The “happy prostitute” slogan was derided by Evangelicals legislators who saw it as glorifying sex work. Although adult prostitution is legal, the South American nation has a growing problem with child prostitution, which is prohibited. The country’s health minister Alexandre Padilha said he didn’t support or endorse this advertisement, the BBC reported. He added that the message was not meant to be published and tweeted that the decision to withdraw the materials was made before any demonstrations against it. Brazil has a mixed record when it comes to sex workers. Unlike other Roman Catholic countries, it publicly distributes condoms, encourages treatment for sexually-transmitted diseases and has pushed drugmakers to reduce the cost of AIDS medications sold there. But in part due to its high poverty rates, the nation has more than 250,000 child prostitutes and a million adult sex workers. Known for its liberal views on sexuality, it is also a top destination for sex tourists. With the Soccer World Cup headed to Brazil in 2014, the prostitution business is expected to boom, TIME reported earlier this year, so much so that Brazilian prostitutes are being offered free English classes to get up close and personal with their foreign clients during tournaments.
Johnny Cook, a bus driver in Haralson County, Georgia, was just speaking his mind – on Facebook. A couple days later he was unemployed. Here’s why: On May 21, a student at Haralson County Middle School boarded Cook’s bus and said he was hungry because he had fallen short on lunch money by forty cents. According to Cook, the child was denied his meal at the school cafeteria because of the deficit. The incident bothered Cook so much that he posted his thoughts about what happened on Facebook: “A middle schooler got on my bus this evening and said mr johnny im hungry. I said why are you hungry buddy? Didn’t you eat lunch ? He said no sir I didn’t have any money on my account. I said they would let you charge it? No sir. Huh! What! This child is already on reduced lunch and we can’t let him eat. Are you kidding me? I’m certian there was leftover food thrown away today. But kids were turned away because they didn’t have .40 on there account . As a tax payer, I would much rather feed a child than throw it away. I would rather feed a child than to give food stamps to a crack head.” When Cook’s employers got wind of the post, they were not pleased. Citing video surveillance footage from the lunch-line area, the county’s superintendent Brett Stanton denied that the incident Cook wrote about ever happened. So the driver was given two options: Either recant his statement and apologize or be terminated. Cook stuck by his story, refused to apologize and lost his job. “I felt like in my heart of hearts the kid was telling the truth. Whether he was or whether he wasn’t, I believed him. So I was not going to recant the story,” Cook told CBS Atlanta. The child’s parents also back Cook’s version of what happened. (MORE: Can You Be Fired for Bad-Mouthing Your Boss on Facebook?) Now Cook wants his job back.
A Rhode Island mother whose daughter was wounded in a shooting Sunday made clear that she had no comment for the press when she swung open her front yard fence and unleashed two pit bulls on a local reporter on Tuesday. Footage of the incident shows the pit bulls chasing the reporter down the street as she narrates the details of her own assault. The reporter suffered a shallow bite to her right forearm. The mother, Melissa Lawrence, was charged with two counts of assault. Providence Journal reports that she showed up to her arraignment the next day wearing a pink t-shirt with the message, “My attitude is your problem,” printed across it.
Atheists already have a Facebook page, a Twitter feed and support groups for their fellow non-believers. Soon doubters who are lying awake at night wondering if there is a God will be able to call a 24/7 hotline run by an atheist group to discuss life’s deepest questions. (MORE: America’s first atheist monument is a 1,500-pound granite bench) The organization behind the hotline, Recovering From Religion, stresses that the service will not prod every caller towards atheism. Instead operators will tailor their advice to each caller’s needs and even suggest alternative faiths that might ease the caller’s troubled conscience. In an interview with CNN, Executive Director Sarah Morehead likened the loss of faith to a “coming out” process – slow, confusing, and often stressful for ex-believers and their families. She speaks from experience. Many of the organization’s board members come from — or “out” — of deeply religious households, including one director whose father is the founder of the Westboro Baptist Church, the congregation that became infamous for waving anti-gay placards outside of military funerals. The group is currently seeking $30,000 in donations to fund the hotline, which should be up and running by Thanksgiving.
People used to log onto Facebook to spy on old flames and check out new crushes. Now it seems like they are more interested in gazing at their own profiles — and that’s a problem. A new study published in the journal Media Psychology found that while looking at one’s profile for just five minutes helped boost self-esteem, the narcissistic exercise also led to a measurable dip in motivation. In the study of 159 U.S. college students, author Catalina Toma of the University of Wisconsin-Madison notes that “by affirming the self, Facebook profiles may render additional efforts to prove oneself superficial.” She adds, “the increase in self-worth and self-integrity induced by Facebook-profile exposure was shown to backfire by reducing users’ motivation to perform well in subsequent cognitive tasks of moderate difficulty.” The author reached her conclusions by having students answer a set of questions measuring self-esteem and cognitive performance after viewing either their own or someone else’s profile. (MORE: Teens Tire of Facebook – but Not Enough to Log Off) Facebook’s social influence has been disparaged lately, and not just because it’s an enormous time suck. As TIME’s Healthland reported in January, German researchers found that spending time on Facebook created feelings of loneliness, misery and envy among a third of the 600 people they studied. This was especially true for people who looked at other’s vacation photos or logged on without posting any of their own content or comments. A separate survey released by Pew Research Center last month found that teenagers were losing interest in the social network, in part because of all the “drama.” (MORE: Scientific Study Suggests Internet Addiction May Cause Brain Damage) As with all studies, the findings from Toma’s research should be taken with a grain of salt. In an article for the Atlantic, Lindsay Abrams offered an alternative interpretation for the dip in students’ cognitive skills: “Maybe they just resented being torn away from their online social world so much so that they had trouble concentrating on anything else.” In other words, our

For years therapists have used computer simulations to create a safe, virtual space where people can confront their real-world phobias of everything from planes to spiders. Now the treatment is being adapted for schizophrenia patients to help them talk back to the frightening voices inside their heads. “The idea was that if we give the invisible entity a human face then it can be much easier for the patient to converse with it,” Julian Leff, the University College London psychiatrist who developed the treatment, told the BBC. Here’s how it works: The therapist presents a patient with a computer-generated avatar that represents a particularly distressing voice. The patient then customizes the avatar’s face, hair and pitch of its voice. Next the doctor, who is seated in a separate room, brings the avatar to life onscreen by saying frightening things through a voice-altering technology that emulates the pitch selected by the patient. Finally, the doctor tells the patient to fight back. “I encourage the patient,” Leff explained to the BBC, “saying you mustn’t put up with this, you must tell the avatar that what he or she is saying is nonsense, you don’t believe these things, he or she must go away, leave you alone, you don’t need this kind of torment.” (MORE: Most common psychiatric disorders share genetic roots) Early results are promising. After up to seven 30-minute sessions each, most of the 16 participants in the pilot study reportedly heard the voices less frequently and felt less distressed when they did. As they talked back to their virtual tormenters, depressing and suicidal thoughts diminished as well. Three patients even stopped hearing the voices altogether after the treatment. The next step is to test the technique on a larger group. Using a $2 million grant from the Wellcome Trust, Professor Thomas Craig of King’s College London Institute of Psychiatry will begin enrolling 142 patients for a new study in July. “The beauty of the therapy is its simplicity and brevity,” Craig said in a press release issued by the Wellcome Trust.

Forget the sweet fads of yesteryear. On the isle of Manhattan, the latest craze is for the cronut, a croissant-doughnut hybrid available at a single bakery in Soho. Although the irresistible, cream-filled pastries from Dominique Ansel bakery have only been on sale since May 10, they’ve gained such a loyal following that the $5 delights, which are deep-fried in grapeseed oil, sell for as much as $40 each when purchased through special scalping services, according to Ryan Sutton, a food critic for Bloomberg News. The glazed goodies have become so coveted in their brief, three-week existence that the bakery has implemented a strict, six-cronut limit, according to Grub Street, and sells out of its daily stock of 200 within minutes of opening at eight each morning. Die-hard fans line up as early as two hours beforehand to ensure they get their fix. (LIST: Top 10 Iconic Junk Foods) Even celebrities don’t get any special privileges. As Grub Street noted, CNN anchor Anderson Cooper tried to get an order for his birthday, but was denied because of high demand from the public. Hugh Jackman, on the other hand, knew the protocol and reportedly waited in line for his cronuts. So what’s a cronut addict to do when she can’t wait for hours each morning to get one? Enter the “cronut black market,” which not only charges a whopping 700% premium for the pastries, but only delivers five out of each half-dozen ordered because the delivery person keeps the sixth as a surcharge. (Here’s a listing for one such delivery service on Craigslist.) If that price is too steep, it may be best to wait until the bakery staffs up to boost its cronut output. Just try not to think of the lovely rose-vanilla glazed ones you already missed out on in May. Or the new lemon-maple variety that debuted on Saturday and will be available for the entire month of June.
Two delivery drivers for Papa John’s pizza company have been fired for inadvertently leaving a customer a ‘butt-dialed’ voicemail message consisting of a vile racist rant. Company CEO and Chairman John Schnatter has since issued a groveling apology for the incident, in which a customer in Sanford, Fla., was subjected to multiple ‘N-bombs’ and accusations that African Americans don’t tip. By contrast, the customer insists he actually tipped 21% “as usual.” (WATCH: Play at Your Own Risk: Hell Pizza’s Scorching ‘Pizza Roulette’) In the accidental message, which the customer posted to Youtube (warning: offensive language), one of the delivery drivers is heard asking, “Did he tip you?” To which his co-worker replies: “Nope, not at all. I guess that’s the only requirement for being a n—r in Sanford.” They then proceed to sing an expletive-filled song almost entirely comprised of racial slurs. The four-minute clip has now gone viral and generated more than 180,000 views in under a week. “This is highly offensive, derogatory, and ignorant,” the customer posted below the video.“I am appalled that there were no managers or supervisors … from stopping this kind of conversation in the workplace.” The branch manager told The Daily Dot that he has received more than 300 angry phone calls since the video was published. Sanford is still reeling from racial tensions after the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin last year. The case is due to go to trial in June. (MORE: Trayvon Martin Murder Trial: George Zimmerman’s Defense Fund Is Almost Broke) Schnatter issued an apologized on the company’s Facebook page on Monday. “Friends, I am extremely concerned to learn about the reprehensible language used by two former employees in one of our restaurants,” he wrote. “Their thinking and actions defy both my personal and the company’s values, and everything for which this company stands.” The activities of Papa John’s employees already made headlines in May, when a delivery driver from Brooklyn was arrested for selling cocaine stashed inside pizza boxes. Ramon Rodriguez, 45, allegedly sold tens of thousands of dollars worth
