The Most Wonderful Time of the Year: Spring is here, but more importantly, ’tis the season for spring break. In the much-buzzed about indie film Spring Breakers, Disney star Selena Gomez shows the world what 20 year olds not under the scrutiny of the paparazzi do on Florida beaches in March. (Reuters) It Started With a Pool: The stereotypical spring break wasn’t always a thing. Turns out, it started when Fort Lauderdale built Florida’s first Olympic-sized pool in 1928. Swimmers (and their admirers) followed shortly thereafter. (mental_floss) Spring Break, Jerusalem Edition: President Obama arrived in Israel Tuesday for his first visit as president. According to the reports, he’s making lots of progress in diplomatic relations: “‘Shalom,’ Mr. Obama said, after embracing President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.” Wait – was that hello or goodbye? (The New York Times) Humbled But Ready To Rumble: Though the president won’t get as much done on this trip as he once thought, its symbolism is crucial for U.S.-Israel relations. (BuzzFeed) Clearly, Israeli Limos Are Subpar: A replacement limousine is being flown in to Israel for President Obama from Jordan after a fueling mishap rendered one of the president’s limos useless. And they brought that one all the way from Washington! (The Guardian) What Really Matters: At least Obama is getting something done: Making his pick for the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. (The Hill) Too Close to Home: Does reality mimic art? Seems like it, when you compare politicians side-by-side with their pop culture doppelgängers (no, Obama’s Satanic twin didn’t make the cut). (Flavorwire) Taking A Stand: A United Methodist church in North Carolina announced that it will not perform any marriages until gay marriage is recognized in the Tar Heel state. (The Daily What) Thank You For Being A Friend: In the weirdest portrayal of Obama and Bibi’s relationship to date, the Embassy of Israel released a wacky video trailer for Obama’s visit this week, to the rousing theme song from The Golden Girls. Sadly, Betty White does not make a guest appearance.
There’s never a good time or place to go on an anti-gay tirade, but onstage at a club in San Francisco owned by a gay man, in front of many gay fans, is probably near the bottom of the list. Michelle Shocked, a singer-songwriter whose sexuality was once fairly ambiguous, stunned fans Sunday night at Yoshi’s Jazz Club with a homophobic rant, according to USA Today. The 51-year-old singer reportedly said that if California’s Proposition 8, which effectively bans gay marriage, is overturned, “it will be the downfall of civilization, and Jesus will come back.” (WATCH: Hillary Clinton Announces Support for Gay Marriage) As her rant went on, fans left the show en masse. Yahoo Music reports that Yoshi’s sound operator, a gay man, finally pulled the plug and asked Shocked to leave the stage, though she managed to shout “You can go on Twitter and say, ‘Michelle Shocked says God hates f–s!’” to what remained of the confused audience before departing. Several venues across the country, from Evanston, Ill. to Boulder, Colo., have canceled upcoming performances. The fact that Shocked was widely believed to be gay makes the whole thing no less, well, shocking. In a 1990 interview with the now-defunct Chicago gay dispatch Outlines, she talked about the fluidity of her sexuality, waxing nostalgic about her first sexual experience with a woman. (MORE: Carly Rae Jepsen to Boy Scouts: Don’t Call Me Until You Accept Gays) But Shocked became a born again Christian and joined the West Angeles Church of Christ choir in the 1990s; in 2008, she told gay newspaper the Dallas Voice that she considers homosexuality a sin. “There are some inconvenient truths that I’m now a born again, sanctified, saved-in-the-blood Christian,” she told the Voice. “So much of what’s said and done in the name of that Christianity is appalling. According to my Bible, which I didn’t write, homosexuality is immoral. But homosexuality is no more less a sin than fornication. And I’m a fornicator with a capital F.” Update: Shocked has issued a statement saying she is “damn sorry” for her comments,

We may not have robots doing our cooking, but a 1988 magazine story predicting what life would be like in 2013 got a lot of other things right, reports the Los Angeles Times. The Los Angeles Times Magazine’s April 3, 1988, cover story, “L.A. 2013,” profiled a day in the life of a fictional family living in the year 2013. Jerry Lockenour stashed the magazine on a shelf, and 25 years later, found that it came in handy as a teaching aid for his USC graduate class on technology development and applications. “I kept the article thinking it would be great to pull out 25 years later and see how we did,” Lockenour told the Times. (MORE: Whose Fault Is a Driverless-Car Crash?) The essay’s author, Nicole Yorkin, spoke with more than 30 futurists and experts, forecasting smart cars equipped with computers and navigation systems, video-chat systems and the smart card, “a personal portable computer about the size of a 3-by-5 card” that fits in the palm of your hand. Yorkin’s experts were right: luxury cars outfitted with GPS, Skype and smartphones have all become integral parts of modern-day life. Well, they were right on some accounts. The essay’s prediction that robots would be our most essential appliances by 2013 (the fictional family from the future had a robotic household helper and robot dog) hasn’t yet come to fruition. Until then, there’s always our Aibos and Roombas — and even better technology on the horizon.
Mikey’s not the only one who likes this cereal. And by that we’re not referring to the famous tyke from the Life cereal campaign, but former NFLer Michael Strahan — who got a taste of Sexcereal on Thursday morning’s espisode of Live with Kelly and Michael. Yep, that’s Sexcereal: a breakfast food specially formulated for sexual health, according to the Toronto Sun. Sexcereal comes in two varieties, one for men and one for women, designed to nourish each gender’s libido in different ways. Entrepreneur Peter Ehrlich said the idea came to him when he was walking through a vegan food fair one day. (MORE: Tony the Tubby Tiger: An Artist’s Warning Against Sugary Cereals) “Sexual health is so important,” Ehrlich told the Sun. “I wanted to create something sexy and fun in the health food industry because nothing is. Everything is very serious.” The cereal got a special boost last month whenEhrlich appeared on a special Valentine’s Day episode of the CBC reality show Dragon’s Den, in which aspiring entrepreneurs pitch their ideas to a panel of millionaire investors. Jim Treliving, owner of the Canadian restaurant chain Boston Pizza, offered him $100,000 for a 50% stake in the company, reports the Toronto Star. The cereal’s unorthodox packaging features a blonde pin-up on the women’s version, and a ripped male model for the men’s recipe — fitting for a cereal meant to promote long term sexual health. But, Ehrlich warned, “you’re not going to get an erection in 20 minutes.” At nearly $13 a box,Sexcereal boasts a number of rare ingredients meant to support hormonal balance in women and testosterone in men, the company website says. Maca, a Peruvian herb used in both recipes, has long been thought to increase stamina and boost libido. Though Sexcereal is only available in Canada at the moment, Ehrlich hopes to bring it to breakfast tables — and perhaps, bedrooms — around the world soon.
Update: We have a pope. (TIME.com) Smoke Detectors: Black smoke emanating from the Sistine Chapel means the cardinals haven’t chosen a pope yet, and it’s happened twice since conclave began. When white smoke emerges, we’ll know that either the cardinals have decided, or someone’s taking a cigarette break. (The Chicago Tribune) He Doesn’t See Colour: One of Britain’s Members of Parliament thought the black smoke/white smoke schtick was a crass way of referring to the next pope’s race. (The Telegraph) But If You Didn’t Know That Either… Read up on why the papal conclave (kind of) matters (to some people). (BuzzFeed) Smoke Signals: The best joke tweet about the pope smoke? The one from God. (Mashable) More Power Than the Pope? Condé Nast will announce Wednesday that they’ve created a new position especially for Vogue editor Anna Wintour: artistic director of the publishing powerhouse. (The New York Times) Grounded, With No Phone Privileges: Amidst tweeting cardinals and the Vatileaks scandal that rocked Benedict’s reign, the Vatican has taken extraordinary measures to keep everything in conclave secret. (TIME.com) Vatileaks and Bushacks: The same hacker who broke into the Bush family’s email accounts hacked former secretary of state Colin Powell’s Facebook account — and used it to hurl screaming, all-caps invective at President George W. Bush. At least, we’re pretty sure it was hacked. (The Daily What) So You Say You Like Hockey, Eh? Expand your knowledge of things Canadians say, because, well, sometimes they visit America and they live kind of close by. (mental_floss) Just Call Him Professor Cartman: South Park is being taught in a college classroom. As are Lady Gaga and vampires. (Flavorwire) Pray For Them: Lifetime’s new reality series Preachers’ Daughters premiered Tuesday. Our favorite quote so far: “God, please don’t ever let my daughter become a porn star.” (YouTube via Crushable)

To ensure that deliberations at the Conclave to elect a successor to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI remains a secret, the Vatican has installed electronic jammers to stop any signals from escaping the Sistine Chapel, Reuters reports. Under the shadow of last year’s Vatileaks scandal, when the pope’s butler leaked secret documents exposing Vatican secrets, the Holy See is taking extra precautionary steps to keep the papal election private. Officials will sweep the chapel and the cardinals’ guesthouses for hidden microphones; electronic jamming devices will also be installed to prevent any transmission from escaping. (INTERACTIVE: Electing the New Pope: Who, How and Where History Gets Made) On Monday, every cardinal at the conclave swore an oath of secrecy inside the Sistine Chapel; the penalty for breaking such an oath is excommunication. But the Vatican has had trouble reigning in cardinals who, like the former pope, have taken a liking to Twitter. Of the 115 cardinals attending (average age: 70), 17 have Twitter accounts. On Tuesday, the day the first conclave vote is set to start, Cardinal Roger Mahony of Los Angeles was still tweeting about reviewing the candidates, though all cardinals were told to stop speaking with the media last week: Once conclave begins, the use of any kind of technology to record or send voice, pictures or text is expressly forbidden, reports Reuters. All news from outside the chapel’s walls is also banned. The only glimpse we’ll have of the furtive election process is if another impostor bishop sneaks in and snaps Twitpics.
It’s happy hour somewhere, right? A Scottish brewery wants customers to pair its latest drink with their morning meal. Earlier this year, Black Isle Brewery released Cold Turkey — a rich beer with a malty coffee base and hints of berries and grapefruit. With oats, barley and wheat, the amber ale “has all the malty taste of multigrain cereal,” Black Isle said on its website. (LIST: We Tried These: Mountain Dew Kickstart and Other Morning Beverages) At 2.8% alcohol by volume, a pint or two of Cold Turkey won’t give you the spins with your morning cereal. But in a country where drinking is prevalent (Scotland has the eighth highest alcohol-consumption level in the world), some Scots are concerned the move will promote alcoholism. Richard Burkitt, director of For the Right Reasons, a Scottish charity that helps people overcome drinking problems, told the Scotsman that the beer sends a negative message. “I would not encourage people to drink alcohol at breakfast time,” he said. “If you are drinking at breakfast time, you have a problem and you are an alcoholic. And you need to seek help.” (MORE: New York’s Ale Awakening: How a Cocktail City Learned to Love Beer) Burkitt has a point. But Black Isle owner David Gladwin said that with such low alcohol content — most beer contains 3% to 7% alcohol by volume — Cold Turkey is meant for people who want a quality drink after the graveyard shift. “Unfortunately, if you mention breakfast and beer in the same sentence, people do jump to rather predictable conclusions,” Gladwin told trade publication the Drinks Business: “But there has been a lot of positive reaction to it as well. It’s worth remembering that one man’s breakfast is another man’s lunch. Some people who have been up for four or five hours prior to 9 o’clock in the morning might have a drink as it’s their lunch.” However long you’ve been up when you drink a Cold Turkey, one thing’s for certain: it’s a breakfast of champions.
Apparently, flannel zebra jammies only look good in music videos. Seattle rapper Macklemore’s song “Thrift Shop,” which celebrates snagging “awesome” bargains on second-hand clothes, has sold more than 4 million digital copies and become the first indie track in nearly 20 years to top the Billboard charts. But it hasn’t boosted sales at actual thrift shops, reports the International Business Times. (MORE: No Money, No Problem: Independent Rapper Macklemore Soars Onto Billboard Chart) National sales at Goodwill Industries, one of the largest thrift store chains, haven’t been significantly impacted since the song went viral (a Goodwill representative interviewed by the Times said data for the Seattle outlet branch where Macklemore filmed parts of the video, was not available). And while news spread around the Pacific Northwest that Seattle’s Fremont Vintage Mall makes a cameo in the video, representatives for the basement collective said sales haven’t noticeably increased since the video’s release in August. Macklemore’s homage may appeal to the masses, but it looks like it really spoke to people who already know the wonders of Value Village (another shooting location for the video). (LIST: 10 Things You Should Be Buying Used) Macklemore told GQ that he’s been shopping at thrift stores “literally” his whole life. “My tally of purchases has got to be in the thousands. I would say probably 3,000 items.” And even though he hasn’t helped boost sales of velour jumpsuits or second-hand house slippers, Macklemore did partner with Goodwill to auction off signed t-shirts to raise money for the chain’s job training program. The upside of not thrifting? No one will ask if you’re wearing your grandma’s coat.
Stop making ‘Harlem Shake’ videos, and listen up: South Korean rapper PSY announced today that he is releasing a follow-up to his worldwide hit “Gangnam Style.” (WATCH: Politician’s Son Begs His Dad To Never Go ‘Gangnam Style’ Again) The single is due out Apr. 13, and Psy will perform a concert dubbed “Happening” at the Seoul World Cup Stadium later that night, which will be streamed live on YouTube. PSY, whose real name is Park Jae-sang, delivered the news in Korean, English, Chinese, Thai, Spanish, French, Portuguese and Indonesian subtitles — a sign of how popular “Gangnam Style” has become worldwide. In October, he told the BBC his next single would be in English and hoped it would live up to the global smash: (PHOTOS: This Is What Happens When Psy Performs a Free Concert in South Korea) “The thing is, it’s too much pressure to overcome ‘Gangnam Style,’” he said. “It’s really hard.” The meme — which features PSY gallivanting with models and riding what looks like an invisible horse through Seoul’s chic Gangnam district — became an Internet sensation last summer. Since then, it has garnered more than 1 billion views, becoming most watched YouTube video of all time. PSY also performed at the White House’s Christmas concert and at South Korean President Park Geun-hye’s inauguration ceremony last month.
Vaya Con Dios: Venezuelan President Hugo Chàvez died Tuesday after a drawn-out battle with cancer. Among other things, his political sentiments, unorthodox historical theories and spiteful invectives made for snappy quoting. (TIME.com) All The World’s a Stage: Whatever drama he gave the world — calling former President George W. Bush a devil, blowing kisses, denouncing Halloween as a game of terror — most agree Chàvez was an oppressive dictator. (BuzzFeed) Work Hard, Play Hard: With such a virulent anti-U.S. leader gone, maybe we can get along with Venezuela, Obama said in a statement Tuesday. (Thought Catalog) We’re Still Mourning The Wire: If networks swapped out current, low-ratings TV shows for their infinitely better rerun counterparts, the world would be a better place. And we could see that adorable Early Edition cat again. (Flavorwire) Meme Killed Dead: Mitch McConnell’s re-election campaign has posted a “Harlem Shake” video.
Carly Rae Jepsen is boycotting the Boy Scouts of America until the group lifts its controversial ban against gay scout members and leaders. The pop singer tweeted today that she won’t be playing the national Boy Scouts Jamboree this July: In subsequent tweets, she continued: “I always have and will continue to support the LGBT community on a global level and stay informed on the ever changing landscape in the ongoing battle for gay rights in this country and across the globe.” (MORE: Boy Scouts Consider Ending Policy Banning Gay Members and Troop Leaders) Jepsen’s decision comes just a few days after the band Train said they wouldn’t play the Jamboree unless the BSA lifted its ban. According to their website, Train didn’t know the Boy Scouts had such a policy against gays, and are looking forward to playing for thousands of scouts “as long as they make the right decision before then.” It also comes four days and 62,000 signatures after Eagle Scout Derek Nance launched a Change.org petition calling on Jepsen and Train to denounce the policy and back out of the event. “Projected attendance for the 2013 National Scouting Jamboree is over 50,000 Boy Scouts, Venturers, volunteers and staff,” Nance wrote. “Among those 50,000 are countless LGBT young people who are forced to hide who they really are, in fear of being kicked out of the organization they love. This has to change.” The Jamboree is held every four years, and the 2013 edition is being billed by the Boy Scouts as “big” and “wild.” But with its headlining entertainers backing out, whitewater rafting and mountain biking will be about the wildest things will get for this year’s attendees.
When news broke Tuesday that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez had died, Twitter exploded. Democratic congressman José E. Serrano, who represents parts of the borough of the Bronx in New York City, eulogized the leftist leader on Twitter: The Venezuelan president and the congressman have something of a history together; Chavez worked with Serrano to bring discounted Venezuelan heating oil to low-income residents of the South Bronx and visited the borough in 2005. Not everybody loves the guy who once called U.S President George W. Bush the “devil” from the podium of the U.N. General Assembly, however, and blowback was swift: The Republican National Committee responded with a statement (via Business Insider) calling Serrano’s tweet “insulting”: “It’s simply insulting that a Democrat Congressman would praise the authoritarian ruler Hugo Chavez. Chavez systematically cracked down on the basic freedom and liberties of Venezuelans, nationalized private industries, and befriended anti-American dictators like Castro, Ahmadinejad, and Assad. Americans should stand together with the freedom loving people of Venezuela as they hope for a peaceful transition to a democracy, instead of praising the former dictator.” Chavez’s tenure as president of Venezuela were marked by socialist reforms and at times virulent anti-U.S. sentiment. He died Tuesday after a drawn-out battle with cancer.

Starbucks Puts Hazelnut Syrup on Caramel Macchiato, Unveils it as New Drink

In a coffee coup for the history books, Starbucks Coffee Co. announced today that it will add a new hazelnut macchiato to its core lineup of espresso beverages. The sweet drink is the Seattle-based chain’s first permanent addition to the menu in 16 years, Starbucks told TIME. Like the company’s ever-popular caramel macchiato, the hazelnut iteration will also be made with vanilla syrup, milk, a layer of foam and espresso on top (one shot for a tall, two for the grande and venti sizes). But — wait for it — the new drink will be topped with a drizzle of hazelnut sauce instead of caramel. See the difference? (WATCH: What’s in the ‘World’s Most Expensive’ Cup of Starbucks?) Undoubtedly, the hazelnut macchiato will be a hit. Starbucks reports that hazelnut is the one of the chain’s most popular syrup flavors, second only to vanilla. “Starbucks baristas use the world’s finest espresso to craft each beverage by hand, with unparalleled passion and expertise,” said Cliff Burrows, Starbucks’ Americas president, in a press release. “No beverage better demonstrates this level of craftsmanship than our signature four-layered Macchiato, and we know customers will love this new member of our espresso beverage family.” Because the hazelnut creation differs only slightly from its caramel sister, it’s a low-risk gamble for Starbucks. Even if it doesn’t do well, baristas can easily ditch the hazelnut drizzle and market a new “naked” macchiato. We’re betting it would do well on the streets of Seattle.
Never let them see you sweat. And definitely never let them see you eat deodorant. But Nicole, a 19-year-old from New York City who declined to reveal her last name, can’t help it: She’s addicted to eating antiperspirant. She eats about half a stick a day of her favorites (the “rich-tasting” brands), and says she loves the way it melts in her mouth. “My mouth is watering because I am craving it,” she said on an episode of TLC’s “My Strange Addiction.” ”I take deodorant everywhere I go.” When she gives in to her cravings, she’ll scoop capfuls of the soft, aluminum-filled wax directly into her mouth. Though she had her first urge to try it when she was 4 years old, it grew into a distracting addiction two years ago. Somewhat predictably, her habit tends to leave her mouth “really dry.” (MORE: Japanese Restaurant Serves Meal of Dirt — for $110) “My brain is telling me, ‘You have to eat it.’ I tried giving it up for a week, but I got really sick and had bad headaches,” Nicole said on the show. “When I realize I’m out of deodorant I start to panic. My anxiety goes crazy and my heart will beat really fast.” Like kids in the ’90s pined for spray candy, Nicole also loves deodorant spray. Even though her tongue went numb the first time she tried it, it has that same great deodorant taste she can’t get enough of. Aluminum deodorants have been linked to cancer when applied to underarms, and doctors have warned her of the health risks of consuming it in her daily antiperspirant fix. Nicole didn’t mention trying natural deodorant brands on the show, but we have a feeling that, like diet soda, they just won’t be as tasty.
Attention, fans of pro basketball and international diplomacy: The Worm has returned. After his controversial trip to North Korea last week, NBA hall of famer Dennis Rodman appeared on ABC’s This Week With George Stephanopoulos to talk about his experiences and to clarify his earlier tweets from Pyongyang (that is, once he figured out exactly which Korea he was in). Rodman didn’t take back his earlier declarations of his love for the people of North Korea or for their Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un, with whom he ate, drank and watched basketball during his two-day trip. Instead, the former Mr. Carmen Electra brought home a message for President Obama from the dictator he now refers to as a “friend for life.” “He wants Obama to do one thing: Call him,” Rodman told Stephanopoulos. ”He said, ‘If you can, Dennis – I don’t want [to] do war. I don’t want to do war.’ He said that to me.” (MORE: 5 Things We Hope Dennis Rodman Learned About North Korea) Unsurprisingly, the White house said Monday that Obama would not be having any late night chats with the notoriously oppressive ruler, who has threatened to destroy the United States. In an unsettling propaganda video promoting North Korea’s missile program, released last month, “We Are The World” plays over images of New York City in flames (lifted, incidentally, from a Call of Duty video game). But Rodman told Stephanopoulos he’s found a possible olive branch, if only Obama is willing to listen: The two leaders share a love of basketball (which apparently can excuse even the most egregious human rights violations). “[Kim] loves basketball. And I said the same thing, I said, ‘Obama loves basketball.’ Let’s start there,” Rodman helpfully pointed out. Dennis Rodman is as far as anyone knows the first American to meet with North Korea’s leader since his father, Kim Jong-Il, died in 2011, passing on the reins of the repressive regime to the 28-year-old. Though Rodman said he doesn’t aspire to a career in diplomacy, he wants to go back to North Korea to “find out more.” WATCH: Gloomy Kim

Politicians – They’re Just Like Us! Everyone knows it’s hard to really buckle down until the night before a deadline. And with only 48 hours until across-the-board government spending cuts go into effect, members of Congress from both parties know they’ve still got enough time to finish the first season of Netflix’s House of Cards before they have to reach a deal. (TIME.com) What Was Wrong With The Old Ones? If spending cuts go into effect, Washington’s National Zoo might not be able to get new cheetahs. (reason) Too Real: Politicians like House of Cards so much because it gets all the little things about Washington right. Like when your boss drunkenly gives a cop his Starbucks card instead of his driver’s license. (Buzzfeed) Still Totally Hip: In an epic ongoing battle with UrbanDictionary.com, the Oxford Dictionary has added the slang term “friend zone” to its pages. (The Daily What) You Can Get That Legally Now: A man described as a “shoeless pot robber” fell out of a tree after trying to evade police in Seattle. Looks like he won’t be Washington state’s new weed adviser. (Seattle Weekly) Just Eat the Cake: Warning: This poignant, genuine explanation of why blogger Kate Fridkis writes about body image might make you cry… and then go buy a double chocolate cupcake. Just read it already. (Huffington Post) And Stop Hating on Fantine: Why is it that every woman on the internet totally loves Best Actress Oscar Winner Jennifer Lawrence, but can’t stand Best Supporting Actress Oscar Winner Anne Hathaway? Because, explains Ann Friedman, Hathaway reminds you of that theater nerd who tries too hard. (New York Magazine) It’s Not Lost, Just Misplaced: It’s been less than a week since Anne and J.Law won their Oscars, so hopefully they still know where they are. But at least 10 (10!) award-winners have lost their statuettes over the years. (mental_floss) Calm Down, Nate Silver: These are the top contenders for next year’s Academy Awards — although the films haven’t been released yet. (Flavorwire) But It Was 99 Cents!
