Nothing will stop students at the University of Tennessee from getting some — not even the university itself, which decided it would not use state tax dollars to fund the first-ever “Sex Week” at its Knoxville campus next month, following a Republican lawmaker’s complaints. The university’s chancellor Jimmy G. Cheek recently announced he was pulling all of the funding for Sex Week that came from academic departments and programs — about $11,145 in tuition dollars and state taxes. (MORE: Steubenville and the Family Guy Generation) Sex Weeks are popular, annual events at college campuses nationwide, but despite what the name suggests, they’re far from bacchanalian bonanzas dedicated to the nude and lewd. They’re designed to be educational, offering classes and panels, open dialogue and free testing for sexually transmitted diseases. That said, Sex Weeks aren’t exactly bastions of chastity, either; some of the UT-Knoxville’s programming attracted accusations going below the belt in all the wrong ways, like the inclusion of a seminar titled “How many licks does it take?” and plans for a “golden condom scavenger hunt.” State Senator Stacey Campfield started the push to shut down Sex Week after reading a Fox News piece highlighting the inclusion of a $20,000 “lesbian bondage expert,” and university officials quickly responded after reviewing the event, which is organized by the student group SEAT (Sexual Empowerment at Tennessee) and set to take place Apr. 7-12. “The University’s three-part mission is to provide education, research and public service, and the state allocates this funding to help us fulfill the mission,” university system president Joe DiPietro said in a supporting statement. “Some activities planned as part of Sex Week are not an appropriate use of state tax dollars.” The student organizers aren’t entirely out of luck, as they still have $6,700 from student programming and fundraising, but that doesn’t mean they’re happy. In typical collegiate fashion, Sex Week supporters are taking to — what else? — social media and Twitter with the hashtag #IWantSexWeek to lodge their complaints — and redefine what it means to be “sexually frustrated.” But with private donations pouring in to cover the costs — including $1,000 from Planned Parenthood —

You Betcha!: Tina Fey revived her Sarah Palin impression, and it looks like you can see Russia from Inside the Actors Studio after all. (Gawker) Freedom Gets the Axe: A student at Freedom High School in Pennsylvania was hospitalized after exposure to too much Axe Body Spray. Here’s a health tip: When something smells like teen spirit, run. (Huffington Post) Welcome to the Neighborhood: Cosby sweaters have blogs devoted to them, but we know the real king of TV sweaters is Mr. Rogers. What we didn’t know? He has an asteroid named after him. (mental_floss) All Buzzed Out: Tech and music junkies are still coming down from SXSW madness, but aspiring next-big-things are already planning another round of tacos, beer and making dreams come true. Is it worth it for new bands? (Flavorwire) Don’t Call It a Comeback: After a near (corporate) death experience, Twinkies are going to live on — and not just because of the chemicals and preservatives. (TIME) Host with the Most: Here’s some news to slow jam — Jimmy Fallon is reportedly committed to taking over The Tonight Show from Jay Leno. (The New York Times) Octofraud: Ever find yourself wondering what’s new with Nadya Suleman? Neither do we, but — surprise! — the mother of 14 is getting investigated for welfare fraud after earning $200,000 of her own money last year. (The Daily Wh.at) A Couple of Couples: Fans of Fox sitcoms, don’t get cocky. You’ve already got New Girl’s Nick and Jess together, don’t think The Mindy Project‘s Danny and Mindy are going to follow suit — says Mindy Kaling. (Vulture) Social Television: Yes, you’re sad Enlightened got canceled, but before you look up at the sky, shake your fist and take HBO’s name in vain, take some responsibility — you probably just didn’t tweet enough to save its ratings. (Fast Company) Idiot Box: You know what’s cool? A million? A billion! That’s how many users YouTube now has, which makes it as colossal as Facebook. (The Atlantic) If the Status Ain’t Hood: Apparel

New Media Triumph: A landmark historical event drew the attention of thousands yesterday — the Veronica Mars movie! While you were waiting for white smoke, Mars fans, or, as Kristen Bell calls them, Marshmallows, were frantically refreshing Kickstarter and setting records. Here’s how they raised more than $2 million in a matter of hours. (Forbes) A Case of the Benjamins: This guy paid $10,000 for a brief speaking role in the Veronica Mars movie, and he’s not even a huge fan. He just has a lot of money and a love of making dreams come true. (Entertainment Weekly) Old Media Triumph: Sure, it was the first Pope selection we could tweet about en masse, but the announcement of Pope Francis was classic suspense: no Nate Silver, no exit polls, just sitting and waiting. (TIME) Speaking of God-Related Things: European researchers have discovered “the God Particle,” believed to be the one of the major building blocks of the universe. Scientists first predicted the subatomic Higgs boson particle, as it’s also called, back in the ’60s. (Gawker) Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread: This high-tech toaster will burn customized images from Google directly into your morning toast. (The Daily Wh.at) Enjambment: Here is a haiku / About new Twitter poems / That are possible. (Slate) Life of Pi: It’s 3/14, and you know what that means: Pi Day! It’s a day for math enthusiasts to celebrate everyone’s favorite mathematical constant beginning with 3.14159. It’s also a day for the rest of the world to indulge in some baked goods. Shout out to the pecan pie slices in the TIME cafeteria — your time has come. Here are 10 other photos of delicious pies. (mental_floss) How About Some Cake Instead: It’s Michael Caine’s 80th birthday. Rest assured, Master Wayne served him breakfast in bed today. (Flavorwire) RIP RSS: Sorry nerds, Google Reader’s days are numbered. Now you’ll have to find a new way to secretly browse Reddit at work.
Fresh off his “basketball diplomacy” mission to North Korea, Dennis Rodman seems committed to continuing his journey of offbeat trips. After taking in a basketball game and copious partying with North Korea’s Supreme Leader, he’s reportedly planning a meet-and-greet with another major international figure: the pope. The NBA Hall of Fame star seems bent on spreading his “peace-making” skills across the world, and with all eyes currently on the Vatican, Rodman has apparently figured he should inject himself into the conversation — in his typical over-exaggerated style, of course. According to the Associated Press, Rodman is planning to arrive in St. Peter’s Square on Wednesday. And he won’t make a quiet entrance — he’ll be riding in a makeshift popemobile and launching a campaign for Cardinal Peter Turkson of Ghana to be elected as the first black pope. And after his whirlwind trip to Rome, Rodman won’t be staying grounded for long. He’s already got his eye on the Eastern Hemisphere once again. Rodman told KXJB radio station in Fargo, N.D. that he’s planning a return visit to North Korea in August to vacation with the despotic leader Rodman has called a “friend for life,” a “good guy” and a “great leader.” Late last month, Rodman became the first known American to meet Kim Jong Un, heading to the country as part of a VICE documentary and appearing cheery with Kim while attending an exhibition basketball game between the Harlem Globetrotters and North Korea’s basketball “dream team” in the capital city of Pyongyang. The visit, however, enraged diplomats in Washington, as it wasn’t an official act of U.S. diplomacy — instead, the tale of his journey will eventually be told in documentary series currently in production on HBO (which, like TIME, is owned by Time Warner). (MORE: Could Dennis Rodman’s North Korea Trip Affect U.S. Policy?) While the unlikely pair shared meals and court-side laughs, relations between their respective countries haven’t been so cordial — even since the visit. North Korea has threatened the U.S. with “miserable destruction” not long

Updated: March 5, 2013 at 7:00 a.m. EST England finally has its watchful protector, a silent guardian. He’s not the hero the country needs, but he is the one it deserves. A man dressed as Batman is fighting crime in the northern city of Bradford, and he’s already proven himself to be a successful hero: The costumed crusader, dressed in the garb of the 1960s television Batman — not in the style of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy — turned in a wanted man to a police station late last month. The vigilante hasn’t made an appearance since then, but that hasn’t stopped news station camera crews from showing up, hoping to catch a glimpse of England’s new hero. (MORE: Woman Mistakenly Receives Drugs in FedEx Package, Alleged Drug Dealers Show Up) Though security cameras appear to have captured the Batman on video, police had yet to identify him as of Monday. But on Tuesday morning, he went on British television to reveal himself. 39-year-old takeaway delivery driver Stan Worby told ITV’s Daybreak that he accompanied his friend Daniel Frayne, while dressed as the caped crusader, as a joke. Frayne had been wanted in connection with a number of offences, and was later charged with handling stolen goods and fraud-related offences. “At the end of the day it was a practical joke, just between me and Daniel,” said Worby. At the time, Worby slipped away into the darkness while police arrested the suspected criminal. The reason Worby looked like Batman is because he’d been dressed as the superhero while attending a soccer match in London. The police hadn’t actually ruled out the possibility that the act of justice was actually a well-coordinated stunt. But Kathryn Sutcliffe, who works at a local joke shop, had an idea of who’s behind the mask — she sold an identical costume to a patron just a few days earlier. The possible caped crusader used a credit card, so Sutcliffe has his full name — although she says she won’t reveal his identity. She did, however,

Australian mining mogul Clive Palmer announced plans for the Titantic II, a brand-new, historically accurate replica of the Titantic, at a press conference Tuesday, and he’s got his heart set on having the 2,435-passenger vessel set sail across the Atlantic Ocean in 2016. As the famous song goes, “near, far, wherever you are, the heart must go on” — icebergs be damned. The ship’s lead designer, Markku Kanerva, promises the Titantic II will match the original design of the 1912 vessel. Voyagers will be able to don period costumes. And to mimic early 20th century social hierarchy, first-class passengers won’t be able to spend any time with meddlesome Leonardo DiCaprios in second or third class. Palmer says there will be some technological upgrades, such as air conditioning and modern navigation, but he does hope to ban all television and Internet — which means no Snapchats from the top of the world. (PHOTOS: Titanic , 100 Years Later: A Tragedy in Photos) But the announcement comes during a bad month for cruise lines. A Carnival cruise ship recently spent five days floating at sea in filthy conditions after an engine-room fire crippled the ship. Five people died and three were injured in the Canary Islands after a lifeboat fell off a Spanish cruise ship. And let’s not forget the roughly 1,500 people who died a century ago when an iceberg took down the “unsinkable” Titanic during its maiden voyage from Liverpool to Long Island. While Palmer admitted that “anything will sink if you put a hole in it,” he thinks climate change is on his side this time, joking that there are fewer icebergs floating around in the ocean nowadays. (And unlike the original ship, there will also be enough lifeboats this time, should anything go wrong.) Palmer has already received offers in the million-dollar range from wannabe passengers, but given his sizable wealth (Forbes estimates his worth at $795 million, though he calls himself a billionaire), Palmer is considering keeping the pricetag down. “We aren’t going to divulge the cost because I have enough money to pay for

Adorable animals and the Internet go hand-in-hand — and we make no apologies for perpetuating the cuteness of the animal kingdom. The halls of TIME are hallowed by canine celebrities, so when Menswear Dog stormed the Web with his fashionable cuteness, we knew we had to shake his paw. The star of the show is Bodhi, a stylish Shiba Inu who appears on the Menswear Dog blog rocking catalog-caliber looks. He transforms cuteness into cool, dabbling in haute-couture with his arsenal of denim jackets and skinny ties (that really belong to his owner) — and most crucially, his expressive looks most mutts wish they could mug. (WATCH: Behind the Scenes at Puppy Bowl 2013) Bodhi’s outfits may look straight off the set of a high-budget photo shoot, but the Menswear Dog project is surprisingly DIY: Husband-and-wife team David Fung and Yena Kim capture the looks right in their Manhattan apartment. They’re a creative couple by nature — Fung is a graphic designer, Kim is a fashion designer — so when boredom struck one afternoon in late January, they pulled outfits straight out of Fung’s closet and right onto Bodhi’s paws. Overnight success is a rarity these days, but the viral popularity of Menswear Dog comes pretty close. Within days of snapping the first shots, the blog received attention from newspapers and blogs all over the world. The more time we spent on the site, though, the more we realized we couldn’t just settle for ogling at Bodhi from the other side of a computer — we had to experience the magic in person. We invited the Menswear Dog team to our office to give us a sneak peek at how the Internet’s most fashionable pooch gets to look so fly. (Hint: It involves lots of tasty treats.)
Last month, Second-Amendment enthusiasts rallied together for the poorly timed Gun Appreciation Day. Last week, a man set a new and dangerous record for the most expensive Starbucks drink ever. Now, guns and coffee are mixing together in a surprising new celebration: Today is Gun Owners Support Starbucks Day. Why are gun owners such big fans of Starbucks? The coffee giant is pretty tolerant about gun owners, and its open-carry policy allows customers with firearms to enter its stores like any other customer. As long as you’re abiding by local laws, your right to bear arms and your right to a skinny cinnamon dolce latte (no whip, no foam) are guaranteed. That’s not how the National Gun Victims’ Action Council feels, though. Earlier this month, the anti-gun group and several other organizations protested the policy with a Brew Not Bullets campaign to boycott Starbucks on Valentine’s Day. (WATCH: What’s in the ‘World’s Most Expensive’ Cup of Starbucks?) “It causes fear and intimidation among the public,” Brian Malte of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, which participated in the boycott, told NBC Washington. “We don’t think Starbucks customers or the public in general should have to deal with people who are obviously not uniformed police officers carrying loaded, open-carry guns in public.” The Seattle-based coffee chain has refused to back down, saying it wasn’t a good idea for the company to defy local laws; now gun supporters are eager to express their thanks. Of all the days to shop at Starbucks, though, why today? February 22nd is 2/22, a pretty significant day when your favorite amendment is the second one. According to the day’s Facebook event page, the three 2s represent everything the Second Amendment helps protect: “defense of ourselves, defense of our families and communities and defense of our great country.” Dedicated gun owners are already planning to make this demonstration an annual event. And for the truly dedicated, there’s only one way to put your money where your mouth is — by paying for your drinks (and tipping baristas) with only

Originally conceived as a marketing campaign by Freed-Hardeman University’s marketing department — Novak’s family works for the university — Kid President has become an Internet sensation that’s taken on a life of its own. Since the show’s debut in October, Novak has gone on to interview stars such as Josh Groban and Rainn Wilson, and he even recorded a kick-ass TED pep talk that has more than 11 million views. Naturally, the White House thought he’d be the perfect person to team up with for the announcement of the 135th annual White House Easter Egg Roll. (PHOTOS: White House Kids’ Books: Whose is Worst?) You might think Obama’s decision to make a cameo — and make Novak’s dreams come true — is the best part of this video, but that’s where you’d be mistaken. The real charm doesn’t start until the one-minute mark, after Obama’s appearance, when Novak reacts to news of the president’s involvement. It’s hard to put Novak’s excitement into words: He shouts, does a touchdown dance and repeatedly erupts into a giggle fit before launching into a history lesson about the White House tradition that Rutherford B. Hayes first started in 1878. “Lynda B. Johnson? There’s a president named Lynda?” Novak asks while running through a list of past presidential participants and offering his colorful commentary. “Is he a boy or a girl? We can tell by their hair!” The White House is expecting 35,000 visitors at the April 1st event this year, and space is tight. To have a shot at attending you have to sign up for the lottery here, which closes on Monday Feb. 25. If you’re hoping for junk food and a mountain of chocolate eggs, though, then clearly you’ve forgotten

Shake Off: Are you tired of “The Harlem Shake”? Too bad. The song just topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart thanks to a new rule that factors in YouTube plays. America, this is why we can’t have nice things. (Billboard) Potty Humor: What did people use before toilet paper? You may be wondering that question now, but once you read the words “sponge on a stick,” you’ll change your mind. And you’ll never look at corncobs the same way again. (Mental Floss) Things We Just Found Out About: You know the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon game? That’s where movie fanatics show off their extensive knowledge of pointless facts and count the links between Kevin Bacon and any other actor in Hollywood. Well, Google likes to play this game, too. Search the name of any actor followed by “Kevin Bacon number” and Google will connect the dots. Try it. (LMGTFY) Awww: If you’re skeptical about the value of listicles, put aside your doubts for just one click. This list of the 50 Most Romantic Things That Ever Happened will actually turn your Grinch heart into a force for good (and serve as a reminder that you should maybe do something nice for your wife). (BuzzFeed) Speaking of Google: A Canadian judge told police that Internet access must be provided to those in custody after a 19-year-old arrested for driving under the influence said he wanted to use Google to find a lawyer. Police officers, take note: You still have to read them their Miranda rights. (The Daily Wh.at) Long Reads: Coming in at 36 pages, our special report on why medical bills are killing us is the longest story our magazine has ever published. (TIME) Return of the Jedi: Mark Hamill, better known to the world as Luke Skywalker, is in talks to appear in the upcoming Star Wars movies. He’s 61 now, and presumably, the force is a little less strong with this one these days. (ETonline) Smells Like Kitsch Spirit: Yesterday was the birthday of late Nirvana frontman

Happy Valentine's Day: What is love, you ask? Before you get your Rickie Vasquez on and party like it’s 1994, you should know the science behind the romance. Researchers have linked early feelings of love to the increased presence of two molecules in your brain that control obsessive-compulsive disorder. So that’s why Liz Phair can’t breath whenever she thinks about you! (Mental Floss) Sexytime on Demand: Kyle McCabe, a student at the College of New Jersey, started a condom delivery service to help his fellow classmates in times of, uh, need. McCabe takes 30 to 40 orders in the peak business hours of the wee morning, likely to the dismay of his own girlfriend. (Gawker) Full Hearts: The New York Times may have the story behind #conniebrittonshair in its lengthy profile of Nashville star Connie Britton, but on a day devoted to the celebration of love, we’d rather read the story behind Britton’s other big role: Friday Night Lights‘ Tami Taylor, wife of Coach Eric Taylor and one half of the best on-screen married couple of all time. (Los Angeles Times) Love Don’t Cost a Thing: J. Lo once sang those famous words, and TIME feels the same way. Share your tips for a low-budget Valentine’s Day with us by using the hashtag #ThrifyValentine. We’ll be watching! (TIME) Fido 4ever: Americans spend more than $700 million on their pets for Valentine’s Day each year. Nice try, America — spend whatever you want, but your pet will never look as classy as Menswear Dog. (The Atlantic) Menswear Swag: Just in time for the holiday, Justin Timberlake unveiled the video for his twinkly new single, “Suit & Tie.” Director David Fincher, who worked with Timberlake on The Social Network, gave the clip the black and white treatment — appropriate for a song about a black-tie affair. Because it’s a David Fincher production (and because we binged on House of Cards last week), we were kinda hoping for a cameo from Robin Wright or one of the Mara sisters, but we’ll settle for shots

If you’re planning a family road trip to the Grand Canyon, feel free to cancel it. Put away the car seat and unplug the GPS, because Google Street View now lets you enjoy Arizona’s finest geological treasure from the comfort of your couch. Fresh off of unveiling new shots of North Korea’s gulags, Google debuted more than a dozen 3-D galleries that feature breathtaking images of the national park’s key attractions, including some of its main trails, the famous Meteor Crater and the Colorado River, which has been eroding and shaping the natural wonder of the world for millions of years. (PHOTOS: Street View and Beyond: Google’s Influence on Photography) The Grand Canyon isn’t exactly a smoothly paved road, so in order to map it Google invented the Trekker, an Android-operated camera that can be worn like a backpack, to capture the canyon’s beauty on foot. Each of the Trekker’s 15 lenses — the same number as on a Google Street View car — takes a photograph every 2.5 seconds to piece together 360-degree panoramic views. A team of 10 Google employees armed with five Trekker devices took three days to photograph 75 miles of the canyon, and we assume no donkeys were hurt in the making of these images. Since Google Street View launched in 2007 with a five-city trial, the mapping service has employed a number of devices to record the world in 3-D. To digitize internationally renowned museum collections, Google created a push-cart trolley camera to weave between sculptures and paintings. To capture off-road parks, stadiums and university campuses, Google designed a tricyle that lugs around state-of-the-art technology with training wheels. And despite Google’s technological prowess, it isn’t afraid of getting a little DIY when it comes to capturing the world’s finest ski slopes — it built a snowmobile apparatus out of 2x4s and duct tape. Google Street View seems pretty committed to making nature’s geological treasures (as well as naked people and wild animals) accessible to anyone with an Internet connection. It already allows users to traverse

Play-by-plays are as vital to the Super Bowl’s soundtrack as the cheering crowds and the sounds of sports fans wolfing down wings. But adding to the noise, more than ever, are the millions of viewers who put down the chips and dip, break out their phones and give Twitter commentary of their own. Americans tweeted about this year’s Super Bowl nearly twice as much as they did last year, according to Twitter’s own analytics, and if there’s one nugget of truth to gleam from all that data, it’s this: Forget the Ravens, the real world champion here is Beyoncé. (WATCH: The Best and Worst Super Bowl Commercials of 2013) Of the more than 24.1 million tweets about the Super Bowl on Sunday — and that’s not including tweets about any of the Super Bowl’s commercials — 5.5 million were about Beyoncé and her near-flawless halftime show. That may only be a quarter of all the tweets total, but tweets-per-minute analysis shows that nothing makes viewers crank out the characters like 14-minutes of fierce choreography and hair-flips. (PHOTOS: Beyoncé Rocks the Superdome, Reunites with Destiny’s Child) We know from Glee that “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” can be a key to football victory, so it’s no surprise that Beyoncé’s performance of her foot-stomping, hand-clapping 2008 monster hit was one of the night’s most popular moments, generating about 252,000 tweets per minute. Her Destiny’s Child reunion with bandmates Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams also brought the buzz online, but it was the conclusion of her halftime show that generated the most tweets: 268,000 per minute, more than any other moment in the game. That’s probably because it’s hard for all the independent women to tweet when they’re throwing their hands up in the air, and because Mrs. Carter deserves your undivided attention when she’s writhing around on stage in front of you.
It’s Lady Gaga’s universe, and we’re all just living in it. And if you happen to be employed by Mother Monster, you might think twice about slapping her with a lawsuit. Lady Gaga had some harsh words for the assistant who’s suing the pop star for unpaid overtime, reports the New York Post, which obtained legal records from a six-hour deposition Gaga gave in August against her former assistant, Jennifer O’Neill, and it’s anything but beautiful in its own way. O’Neill, who worked for the pop singer for roughly two years, claimed in the lawsuit that she put in 7,186 hours of unpaid overtime and is asking for $393,000, plus damages. (PHOTOS: Fashion Favorites: A Dozen Designers Lady Gaga Loves) Gaga, born Stefani Germanotta, claims O’Neill used her boss’ name to get free swag, didn’t unpack enough of Gaga’s luggage while on tour, overslept, refused to share one of the beds on Gaga’s private jet, wore Gaga’s clothes without permission and was generally ungrateful for the life of luxury that comes when you roll with an international pop star. “Not that people who do that don’t deserve their hourly pay, but I’m just pointing out that I deserve everything I’ve worked for,” Gaga reportedly said in the testimony. “I deserve every dollar of it. And she deserves every dollar of her $75,000 [annual salary] that we agreed to. But she does not deserve a penny more.” (MORE: Lady Gaga, Deemed Satanic by Conservative Groups, Is Bullied Out of Indonesia) She also said O’Neill lacked the “knowledge and academia” needed for the job, which she was given, Gaga claims, as essentially a favor to a former friend. But in case there’s any doubt about whether the split was amicable, Gaga said she actually recalls the exact moment she knew their friendship was over: when, after partying all night in Paris and getting “sh– hammered” together with photographer Terry Richardson, O’Neill refused to give up her bed on the plane ride home when Gaga asked her to, telling the singer she had seniority. “When your best

Cory Booker is the Chuck Norris of U.S. mayors, and his list of real-life acts of heroism keeps growing. The latest feat of the 43-year-old Newark, N.J., mayor: rescuing a freezing pooch from the cold on Thursday after concerned locals tipped him off on Twitter. Reporter Toni Yates first noticed a dog suffering in the below-freezing temperatures while filming footage for a segment, but when she saw the dog was still outside hours later, she tweeted at Booker to take action — and that’s exactly what he did. The mayor arrived, scooped the dog up and carried it into a police car before delivering a stern warning by phone to the dog’s owners, who claimed they didn’t know “Cha Cha” had escaped outside. (MORE: 5 Questions with Twitter-Savvy Newark Mayor Cory Booker) “This dog is shaking really bad, and you just can’t leave your dogs out here on a day like this and go away and expect them to be O.K.,” Booker told WABC. “Hypothermia on any animal, including a human animal, will set in pretty quickly. So this is very sad, you can just feel the dog shaking pretty badly.” Thursday’s rescue isn’t the first time Booker has braved extreme conditions — or used social media — to come to the rescue. To help you understand why some call Booker the Supermayor, NewsFeed proudly presents the Cory Booker Greatest Hits Collection: (MORE: Cory Booker Cements His Reputation as Newark ‘Supermayor,’ Lets Sandy Victims Crash at His House) Last April, when a neighbor’s home caught fire, Booker saved a woman from the blaze without hesitation. “I just grabbed her and whipped her out of the bed,” he told the New Jersey Star-Ledger. The mission was successful, and both were treated at a hospital for some smoke exposure. (And as one Twitterer joked, “Smoke was treated for Cory Booker exposure.”) When Hurricane Sandy struck this past fall, knocking out power for many New Jersey residents, Booker opened up his home to let folks hang out, watch DVDs and charge their devices.

No, you didn’t hit your head and wake up in 1994 — an independent artist has topped the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time in nearly 20 years, and for only the second time in history. Thanks to their brassy, bargain-hunting hit “Thrift Shop,” Seattle hip-hop duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis join ’90s folk-pop singer Lisa Loeb in the elusive club of artists who reached number one without a label. Macklemore, born Ben Haggerty, has been recording music since the early 2000s, only began getting noticed this fall with the release of The Heist, his full-length debut album, recorded with production partner Ryan Lewis. Macklemore makes his strong feelings about big labels no secret on the album: In a song titled “Jimmy Iovine” — named for the chairman of Interscope-Geffen-A&M who helped make another white rapper, Eminem, famous — Macklemore takes down record contract politics with the unequivocal closing line, “I’d rather be a starving artist than succeed at getting f—-ed.” Geez, Mack, tell us how you really feel. Lisa Loeb, on the other hand, was an unknown, unsigned singer-songwriter when she got her big break courtesy of actor Ethan Hawke, her friend and then-neighbor who helped get her song “Stay (I Missed You)” onto the soundtrack for Reality Bites, Hawke’s 1994 film co-starring Winona Ryder. Though the song’s Hawke-directed music video is now semi-iconic for its simple, one-take shot of Loeb singing in an empty apartment, it has nothing on the “Thrift Shop” video, which finds Macklemore at one point doing what is essentially parkour through a secondhand clothing store while decked out in outrageous outerwear. (Then again, Macklemore hasn’t been covered by Taylor Swift, so his legacy still has much to prove.) It’s not all fun and games when it comes to popping tags, though. In a harsh critique, SPIN writer Brandon Soderberg claimed the song’s celebration of cheapness “stinks of privilege” and mischaracterizes rap music as excessively materialistic. Macklemore is probably too busy frolicking in onesie pajamas to respond to his haters. The real question, of
