When Aftab Aslam got an F in English—a class he’d failed once already—the prospect of telling his parents the bad news was too much for him to bear. According to the Johns Creek Patch, Police say that on April 27 the 19-year-old student at Gwinnett College in Lilburn, Georgia bought a cheap cellphone from Target and texted his parents. The message, purporting to be from a criminal gang, informed them that their son had been kidnapped and warned them not to contact the police or he would be killed. (MORE: The Mind of the Kidnap Victim: How They Endure and Recover) But his parents did call the police, who then brought in the FBI, who then proceeded to launch an intensive investigation. While Aslam, 19, was hiding out in a field, the authorities found the phone he used to send his bogus message. Once they found out that he was the one who bought the phone, they downgraded the case from a suspected kidnapping to a missing-person investigation. But when bad weather forced Aslam to go home after eight days’ camping in the field, he stuck to his story and continued to claim that the made-up gang had drugged him and held him prisoner. (MORE: Boy, 11, Fakes Own Kidnapping to Stop Parent-Teacher Conference) Under cross-examination, Aslam eventually confessed to having made the whole thing up, reports the Patch. While it’s unclear what exactly Aslam thought the outcome of his ruse would be, the Daily Mail notes that he may have thought that his parents’ relief at his safe return would overshadow any anger when he eventually broke the news of his bad grades. The police were less than sympathetic to Aslam’s academic problems. They arrested him on Friday and charged him with falsely reporting a crime, making false statements, tampering with evidence and making terroristic threats. According to the Fulton County Jail, he was released the following day on $9,000 bail.
Venezuelans are used to going without staples like milk, coffee and butter, thanks to the country’s frequent food shortages. But now they’re dealing with a much more urgent crisis: a lack of toilet paper. Stores have run out, and each new delivery sees a rush to supermarkets. The demand is so great the government has now been forced to order 50 million rolls to appease desperate shoppers. One woman standing in line at a Caracas supermarket that received a fresh delivery told the Associated Press that she had been scouring the capital city’s shops for two weeks. “Even at my age, I’ve never seen this,” another, 70-year-old shopper told Sky News. (MORE: Kansas Woman Discovers Circus Tiger in Bathroom) Economists blame Venezuela’s shortages partly on price controls, initiated by the late President Hugo Chávez, to make goods affordable to the poorest people in society (in a government store, a kilogram of pasta costs $0.30, writes the BBC). But that has also led to countrywide shortages of staple items, and Venezuela’s “scarcity index” is currently at 21% — meaning that out of 100 basic products, 21 aren’t available in stores, notes the BBC. “State-controlled prices — prices that are set below market-clearing price — always result in shortages,” said Steve Hanke, professor of economics at Johns Hopkins University, told the Associated Press. “The shortage problem will only get worse, as it did over the years in the Soviet Union.” (MORE: Domestic-Abuse Charity to Use ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ as Toilet Paper) But socialist President Nicolás Maduro (who was hand-picked by Chavez to succeed him) blamed the toilet-paper shortage on “antigovernment forces,” reports the Associated Press. While pledging to rectify the situation, Commerce Minister Alejandro Fleming pointed the finger at the media, which he accused of purposely creating “excessive demand” for toilet paper in order to disrupt the country. Whatever the cause of the current crisis, Fleming confirmed that he was taking drastic action: “The revolution will bring 50 million rolls of toilet paper,” he said, adding: “We are going to saturate the market so

It had stood untouched for 2,300 years, but now one of Belize’s largest Mayan pyramids has been all but destroyed by a construction crew working on a road project. The destruction at the Noh Mul complex, near the border with Mexico, was first noticed by archaeologists last week. But by then it was far too late. Pictures taken at the scene show that excavators have already made short work of the 100-feet tall monument’s sloping sides, digging out the structure’s limestone walls for use as road fill. Although the structure was located on a privately-owned sugarcane plantation, according to the Huffington Post, pre-Columbian ruins are under government protection in Belize. (MORE: Did Climate Change Kill the Mayans?) The pyramid — regarded as Belize’s most important Mayan monument — was once the center of a settlement of around 40,000 people and 81 buildings over an area of 12 square miles. According to John Morris, an archaeologist at the Belize Institute of Archaeology, the building would have served as a huge palace or temple. “It would have had many rooms in there, multilayered rooms so you have rooms for people living, and you would also had several tombs in there of the people who lived in this area here,” he told 7NewsBelize. Jaime Awe, the head of the Belize Institute of Archaeology, told 7NewsBelize it was impossible that the workers could have mistaken the pyramid (which was overgrown with trees and brush) for a natural hill, as the landscape around it is otherwise flat – besides which it is a very well-known landmark. “It’s a feeling of incredible disbelief because of the ignorance and the insensitivity… they were using this for road fill,” he said. “It’s like being punched in the stomach. It’s just so horrendous.” (MORE: Want to Tweet in Mayan? This Group Can Help) Awe said that he and his colleagues may search through the debris for Mayan artifacts, but that the pyramid is beyond saving. The unscrupulous contractors could now face police action, reports CNN, along with the landowner.
The London Zoo is seeking a mate for an endangered tropical fish species – and time’s running out. Zoo officials believe that dams on the fish’s natural habitat, the now dried-up Mangarahara river in Madagascar, have made the Mangarahara cichlid extinct in the wild, reports the Associated Press. That means the only hopes for the critically-endangered species’ survival are the three fish that are known to exist in captivity – two at the London Zoo aquarium and one in Berlin. But there’s a problem: they’re all males, and they’re not getting any younger. Attempts to find any more female Mangarahara cichlids in zoos around the world have proved fruitless. The Berlin Zoo used to have a female in captivity, but attempts to get the two endangered fish to breed ended in disaster when the male killed his would-be mate – a common occurrence among cichlids, London Zoo’s aquarium curator, Brian Zimmerman, told the BBC. (MORE: Why a Hotter World Will Mean More Extinctions) The Zoological Society of London now wants to hear from any private aquarium owners, fish collectors and hobbyists if they have or know of any females in existence. They’ve even produced a “wanted” poster that they’ve asked people to distribute in the hope of finding someone that has one of the silver and orange fish, which Zimmerman told the BBC are instantly recognizable: “They are gorgeously ugly, they are unusual. They are more a connoisseur’s type of fish. They need quite a bit of space; the males are bigger than your hand, and they need a decent tank.” (MORE: 5 of the Most Endangered Species on the Planet) Given the advanced age of the London fish — at 12 years old, they’re reaching the end of their normal lifespan — the London aquarium’s curator isn’t holding out much hope of finding a mate for them in time. He also lamented the impact of human activities on freshwater fish. “As water becomes diverted for human use it becomes scarcer and fish generally lose out,” he told the BBC. “I think there’s probably a very

An ambitious project to establish a human colony on Mars has attracted applications from tens of thousands of would-be astronauts, just two weeks after applications opened. The mission, a private venture by the Dutch non-profit organization Mars One, aims to send a crew to the Red Planet in 2022 – and, due to the physiological change in the human body after a stay on Mars, there’d be no coming back. That hasn’t deterred people, though: so far, over 78,000 people have applied to become one of Mars’ first immigrants (the company is expecting 500,000 applicants by the time applications close on August 31). “This is turning out to be the most desired job in history,” says Bas Lansdorp, co-founder of Mars One. (MORE: Asteroid in a Bag: NASA’s Long, Strange Trip) Day-to-day life on Mars will be no picnic: The organization says that the daily routine on the planet would involve construction work on the colony (installing greenhouses, for example), maintenance of the settlement’s systems and research into Mars’ climate and geological history–all in an inhospitable environment with unbreathable air and an average temperature in the planet’s mid-latitudes of around -58 degrees Farenheit. But Mars One says it is not looking for applicants with specific skills, such as a science degree, that might be useful during an interplanetary posting. Instead, they are looking for people who “have a deep sense of purpose, willingness to build and maintain healthy relationships, the capacity for self-reflection and ability to trust.” They also want volunteers who are “resilient, adaptable, curious, creative and resourceful.” Candidates will receive a minimum of eight years training before leaving Earth, the company says. (MORE: Dirt Found on Mars! Why the Red Planet Makes Us Crazy) “Gone are the days when bravery and the number of hours flying a supersonic jet were the top criteria for selection. Now, we are more concerned with how well each astronaut works and lives with the others–and for a lifetime of challenges ahead,” said Norbert Kraft, a former Senior Research Associate at NASA and Chief Medical Director for Mars One in

A dinosaur skeleton from the Mongolian desert that was allegedly smuggled into the U.S. is finally going home. (MORE: Sexy Dinosaurs: The Lure of Feathers) The fossilized remains of an 8-ft.-tall, 24-ft.-long Tyrannosaurus bataar (a relative of Tyrannosaurus rex that lived around 70 million years ago) became the center of an international legal dispute after it was sold at a U.S. auction in 2012 for more than $1 million. The battle to bring the disputed skeleton home — a tale described to LiveScience as a “a cross between Indiana Jones and Sherlock Holmes” by Ann Altman, an American who helped the Mongolians reclaim the bones — began almost a year ago when the Mongolian government recognized that the nearly complete set of fossils, which were being offered for sale by an auction house in New York City, were from a species found only in a certain rock formation in Mongolia. According to local law, fossils discovered in Mongolia belong to the nation and its people, and cannot be exported — although specimens from Mongolia often turn up for sale in the U.S., notes Fox News. (MORE: Dinosaur Vandals Strike Again in Canada) A joint U.S.-Mongolian investigation concluded that the skeleton had been stolen from the Gobi Desert between 1995 and 2005, and the Mongolian President appealed directly to the U.S. authorities for its return. The investigations led to Eric Propoki, a 38-year-old man from Gainesville, Fla., described as “a one-man black market in prehistoric fossils” who had imported the Tyrannosaurus bataar bones into the U.S. via Britain before assembling them into a skeleton and offering them for sale. He was arrested and later pleaded guilty to conspiracy, the fraudulent transfer of the bones and making false statements to customs authorities, according to the Associated Press. He also agreed to give up a number of other dinosaur remains from Mongolia as well as one specimen from China, writes the AP. He now faces up to 17 years in jail as well as a $250,000 fine. “We are very pleased to have played a pivotal role in returning Mongolia’s million-dollar baby,” said federal

Not even the French President’s wine cellar is immune to the financial austerity measures taking effect across Europe. The Paris auction house Drouot has announced that the Élysée Palace — the presidential palace — is set to put 1,200 of its finest bottles up for auction at the end of the month, the New York Times and Reuters report. The money raised—expected to be around 250,000 euros ($327,500)—will reportedly be used to both buy cheaper wines and fund the cash-strapped country’s budget. (MORE: More Booze Please! The National Drive to Lift Restrictions on Alcohol-preneurs) The bottles in upcoming sale make up about 10% of the 12,000 in the Élysée Palace’s famous cellar, which provides wines for state functions. Drouot says some of the wines, mostly from Bordeaux and Burgundy, have “accompanied great moments of the Fifth Republic,” as Radio France Internationale reports, and the cellar’s wines have been served to numerous foreign guests. While the Financial Times says one of the bottles up for sale, a 1990 Petrus Bordeaux, is worth about 2,200 euros ($2,900)—the auction house says most bottles should be available for less than 100 euros ($132). (MORE: A New Way to Curb Drinking? Planting False (Bad) Memories of a Bender) Since he took office in 2012, France’s Socialist President François Hollande has tried to portray himself as “Mr Normal,” a man who prefers people to money and rejects the excesses associated with his predecessors in the post. So the wine auction may be a symbolic gesture to show empathy with a nation feeling the pinch of austerity. The plan also comes after the city of Dijon auctioned 3,500 bottles in January, as socialist Mayor François Rebsamen sold half of the city’s official cellar, raising 150,000 euros ($198,000) to help fund the city’s struggling social services. Across the Channel, the British government also auctioned off vintage French wine from its cellar last month as part of an austerity drive, according to Reuters.
The funeral of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher cost $5.6 million — a fraction of its previously estimated price tag, according to the BBC. The procession through central London and ceremony at St. Paul’s Cathedral on April 17 — together with a huge security operation involving some 4,000 police officers — was initially estimated in some media reports to cost around $15 million, a tab that would be largely picked up by British taxpayers. (MORE: ‘End of an Era’: Sir Malcolm Rifkind Remembers Margaret Thatcher) That led to an outcry among those who felt that such a sum (particularly for a Prime Minister whose economic reforms and battles with trade unions continue to divide Britain) was excessive at a time of austerity. As thousands of people lined the streets of central London to pay their respects to Lady Thatcher, who died on April 8 at the age of 87, a number of protesters vented their anger over the funeral’s perceived cost. When the true cost of the funeral was announced on Friday by the Prime Minister’s Office, Lord Bell, a spokesman for the Thatcher family, told the Daily Telegraph that those protests had been unjustified. “It is a remarkably low cost for this most extraordinary event. It increased the standing of Britain in the world and was extremely good value,” he said. (MORE: Postmortem Popularity: Why Sales of Margaret Thatcher’s Favorite Purses Spiked) The Prime Minister’s office says that about $774,000 was spent on ceremonial costs such as the use of St. Paul’s Cathedral and receptions after the service, reports the BBC. A further $1.7 million were devoted to policing and security, with an additional $3.1 million paying for officers who otherwise would have been on other duties on the day of the funeral. Flowers and undertaking costs were paid for by Lady Thatcher’s family. The actual cost of the funeral — which works out at 9¢ for each British taxpayer — came to less than other British funerals on a similar scale (although Lady Thatcher was not given

A sidewalk has exploded on a London street – and it’s not the first time it’s happened. Footage captured by a witness in a nearby building shows a man looking at a mysterious hole in a sidewalk in the central London neighborhood of Pimlico. Witnesses then report hearing three bangs, the second of which was accompanied by flames shooting out of the hole – sending the curious bystander running for his life. “We heard this huge bang and there was black smoke everywhere,” a man who works across the street told the London Evening Standard. “Then came the second, which was like a volcano erupting from underneath the pavement, the flame was about ten feet high, it was very scary.” (MORE: After the Texas Explosion: A Firestorm of Lawsuits?) The blast, which is being investigated by the U.K.’s Health and Safety Executive, is thought to have been caused by a faulty 11,000-volt underground electricity cable, reports the Standard. Worryingly for residents, exploding sidewalks appear to be a new London trend: a string of similar cases have been reported over the last two years. In August 2011, an elderly man was reportedly confined to a wheelchair for nearly three months after an explosion blew out a manhole cover he was standing on while talking to friends, according to the Standard. He reportedly claimed negligence on the part of U.K. Power Networks, which owns and maintains the capital’s electrical grid, but the company apparently refused to speculate on what caused the explosion. The officer’s heroic actions were caught by a security camera at Medellin’s Hospital railway station on April 15.
In the central England city of Stoke-on-Trent, the cost of a cup of coffee could buy you a three-bedroom house. The city’s council is offering 35 derelict houses for sale at just £1 ($1.53) each, attracting the interest of 600 would-be homeowners, reports the BBC. It’s an attempt to breathe new life into two particularly run-down streets in the Cobridge area of the city. According to council data, as of 2011 there were around 4,000 empty houses in Stoke-on-Trent—a city hit hard by industrial decline, with high rates of crime and unemployment—and many of those properties have become targets for vandalism and arson. (MORE: How the Monarchy Allows Britannia to Make Waves) “We want to revitalize these areas, build a community spirit and turn these places into thriving neighborhoods again,” writes the council on its web page. There are high hopes for the plan: within five years the council expects the area to become “a thriving community with good quality housing for people with a choice of owning or renting their home.” The terraced houses have two to three bedrooms and are in a variety of conditions ranging from liveable to all but falling down, writes the Daily Mail. Buyers will be contractually obliged to renovate the properties and bring them back into use, at an estimated cost of up to £30,000 ($45,773) per building – for which they can take out a loan from the council. That’s still a pretty good deal, though: the average price for a terraced house in Stoke-on-Trent is £68,878 ($105,091), according to the Land Registry of England and Wales. (MORE: Goths and Punks Can Now be Hate-Crime Victims in Manchester, U.K.) There are a few more conditions as well: buyers must currently live in Stoke and have lived there for the past three years; if the house is sold within 10 years, the town council gets a percentage of the profit. Also, the new house must be the buyer’s main home for a minimum of five years – ruling out the idea of people renting out their £1 homes for a tidy

Tens of thousands of Dutch people have threatened to leave the country in protest over a pop song written for the inauguration of Holland’s new king. After Queen Beatrix announced her abdication in January, Crown Prince Willem Alexander is set to become the country’s first king in more than a century when he replaces his mother as Holland’s monarch on April 30. Ahead of the occasion, an inauguration committee asked the public to contribute lyrics for a new anthem, written by British-born songwriter John Ewbank, to be performed at the event, reports the Daily Telegraph. (MORE: How the Business of Streaming Music WIll Change Culture… For the Better) The result, called “The King’s Song” (or “Koningslied”) features an unusual mix of musical styles, including traditional Dutch music and rap. The project involved a total of 51 Dutch artists, who can be seen in the song’s promo video flashing the three-fingered “W” (for Willem) sign, and singing ”I build a dyke with my bare hands and keep the water away” and “through wind and rain I’ll stand beside you… I’ll keep you safe as long as I live.” (MORE: Survival-of-the-Catchiest: How Music “Evolves”) Ewbank has written and produced a string of Dutch top 40 hit singles, and “The King’s Song” seemed at first to be no exception, going straight to the top of the Netherlands’ iTunes chart when it was released on Friday. But many Dutch were less than enthused, and by the following day, an online petition entitled “No to the King’s Song” had collected nearly 40,000 signatures from people who vowed to abdicate as Dutch subjects unless the “imbecilic” track was withdrawn from the inauguration ceremony. One unimpressed signatory said the song sounded like “North Korean propaganda,” while another wrote that the track “spontaneously turns you into a Republican, if you weren’t one already,” reports the BBC. Later on Saturday, Ewbank admitted defeat, and said he was withdrawing the song from the ceremony, reports the Guardian. “After having to block yet another insult on my Twitter account, I am now totally done,” he tweeted,

Parts of the Sunshine State could soon be overrun by house-eating snails that grow to the size of rats. Reuters reports that more than 1,000 giant African land snails are being caught each week in Miami-Dade County, southern Florida. The snails grow up to 7 inches long and eat “pretty much anything that’s in their path and green,” Denise Feiber, a spokeswoman for the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, told Reuters. They also have a penchant for stucco (which contains calcium, vital for a healthy shell) making them a menace to homeowners. (MORE: Car Trouble: Spider Infestation Leads to Mazda Recall) When the state’s rainy season begins in seven weeks’ time the snails, which can produce around 1,200 eggs a year, will start to emerge from their winter hibernation – at which point residents of southern Florida should perhaps brace themselves for the type of scene common in Barbados, where the snails coat walls and pavements with slime and excrement and are often blamed for blowing out car tires on highways. As if that weren’t bad enough, the snails also carry a parasitic rat lungworm which can cause illness in humans, including a type of meningitis, although no such cases have yet been reported in the U.S. It’s still unknown where or how the infestation started. One possible source is practitioners of Santeria, a religion with West African and Caribbean roots, who in 2010 were found to be using the snails in their rituals, writes Reuters. But Feiber said the snails are sometimes brought into the U.S. by accident. “If you got a ham sandwich in Jamaica or the Dominican Republic, or an orange, and you didn’t eat it all and you bring it back into the States and then you discard it, at some point, things can emerge from those products,” she said. The last known Florida invasion of the giant snails was in 1966, when a boy returning to Miami from vacation in Hawaii brought back three of them, notes Reuters. His grandmother subsequently released the snails into her garden;

Updated: Apr. 15, 2013 at 4:00 a.m. EST Following her death on April 8, the bitter row over Margaret Thatcher’s legacy continues – with a campaign to get the song “Ding Dong! The Witch is Dead”, from the movie The Wizard of Oz, to number 1 on the U.K. music charts. The song ended up reaching number two on Sunday after selling 52,605 copies. This was more than 5,700 copies behind Duke Dumont and A*M*E with “Need U (100%),” which stayed at the top for a second week. Meanwhile, a rival campaign song, “I’m In Love With Margaret Thatcher” entered at number 35 after a late push from Lady Thatcher supporters. The former Prime Minister, whose time in office was marked by battles with workers’ unions and the privatization of key industries, continues to be a divisive figure in Britain. On the day of her death a number of street parties were held throughout the U.K., some of which turned violent. (MORE: Rage Against Simon Cowell? A British Pop Charts Upset) Encouraged by an anti-Thatcher Facebook campaign, people are now downloading the 1939 song, sung by Judy Garland and the cast of the movie, in an attempt to make it the top-selling track of the week. (MORE: Fondness in Finchley: Margaret Thatcher’s Constituency Reflects on Her Legacy) The activist Adam Jung, writing for the Huffington Post, called it “a creative way for Brits to correct the national narrative” of Thatcher’s time in office. But the music journalist Neil McCormick, writing in the Daily Telegraph, said that the campaign would make the song “the most inappropriate and gratuitously offensive number one hit single ever.” And former Conservative Member of Parliament Jonathan Aitken told a British TV show: ‘People who have respect for Lady Thatcher and her views will not find this anything other than a distasteful affair,” adding that it was ”a pretty feeble form of protest.” (MORE: Margaret Thatcher’s Funeral: Who Will Be Attending) But distasteful and feeble as it may be, the campaign is causing a significant headache for the BBC. By Friday, “Ding Dong!
The devastating economic crisis that gripped Cuba in the 1990s led to a marked improvement in the nation’s health, researchers have found. After the collapse of the Soviet Union — and the subsequent termination of Soviet aid — and amid the tightening of the U.S. embargo, Cuba’s government was forced to implement tight rationing of food and fuel. But it also introduced policies like commercial neighborhood gardens and the use of animals in farming in place of machinery. Cuba imported 1.5 million bicycles from China, and produced half a million more. By looking at health statistics from that time—known in Cuba as the “Special Period”—researchers could see if such wholesale changes in dietary and exercise habits, across the population, made a difference to the nation’s health. (MORE: Cuba’s Yoani Sánchez: What to Make of the Dissident’s World Tour) Cuba has a long tradition of public health and cardiovascular research, and the researchers — from Spain, Cuba and the U.S. — were able to examine detailed data about body mass changes and diabetes cases between 1980 and 2010. The results, published in the British Medical Journal, show that during the crisis the average Cuban lost up to 11 pounds, and the country saw a rapid decline in death rates from diabetes and coronary heart disease. But when the economic crisis ended in 1996,people in Cuba started to get heavier again, notes the study: although physical activity levels only declined slightly, by 2002 Cubans were enjoying their country’s sustained economic growth, consuming more food and drink than they were before the crisis, and putting on an average of around 20 lbs each between 1995 and 2010. (MORE: Lessons in Socialism: How Cuba Can Become Relevant Again) “By 2011, the Cuban population has regained enough weight to almost triple the obesity rates of 1995,” write the researchers, noting that they also saw a surge in diabetes cases. Manuel Franco an associate professor at the University of Alcalá in Madrid who led the study, said in a video presenting the team’s results that top-down efforts to bring down

A British police force will now treat violence and abuse against punks and goths as hate crimes. Offenses committed on grounds of disability, race, religion or sexual orientation are already recognized across the U.K. as hate crimes. But now Greater Manchester Police (GMP) will record crimes against “alternative subcultures” — which include goths, punks, emos and metallers — in the same way. (MORE: Muslim Punk Rock: A Mashup of Piety and Politics) In a statement heralding the “major breakthrough,” Assistant Chief Constable Garry Shewan, GMP’s lead on hate crime said: “We are able to officially recognize that people who wish to express their alternative sub-culture identity freely should not have to tolerate hate crime — something that many people have to endure on a daily basis.” Skaters, skinheads, bikers and bodybuilders would also be recognized as victims of hate crime, as Shewan told Channel 4 News. The GMP’s decision comes five years after 20-year-old Sophie Lancaster died after being repeatedly kicked in the head in a Lancashire park — an offense that the judge sentencing her five killers recognized as a hate crime because she was targeted for being a goth. Two of them were convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment, while the others were convicted and jailed for grievous bodily harm. (WATCH: Museum of Tolerance: The Story of a Hate Crime) Although such offenses will now be recorded by police as hate crimes, it is a distinction not yet enshrined in law. Asked on Twitter how designating such attacks as hate crimes would affect a prosecution, Shewan said that the evidence of “motivation, hate, prejudice or hostility” would be presented in court. That could result in a harsher sentence being imposed. On Twitter, campaigners celebrated GMP’s decision and called for similar measures to be introduced throughout the U.K. and worldwide. But the journalist Colin Freeman, writing in the Daily Telegraph, asks how ethnic minorities and other “vulnerable groups,” for whom hate-crime legislation was originally designed to protect, will feel about subcultures getting the same protection: “If things get really bad, goths

A drunk man was found dangling from high-voltage overhead electricity wires 30 feet above the streets of Linfen, China. The episode was filmed by onlookers and later broadcast on Chinese state TV. Authorities had to cut the power to the cables to prevent the man—who was later found to have an excessively high level of alcohol in his blood—from being electrocuted, according to the Daily Telegraph. (MORE: New infrared-camera technology can tell if you’re drunk) The man clung to the wires while a firefighter tried to talk him down. At one point he fell from one set of cables to another, where he remained for around 15 minutes. Eventually he lost his grip and plummeted, landing onto a giant inflatable pillow placed there by firefighters. He was uninjured and told reporters he drank too much because he was in a bad mood.
One of Benito Mussolini’s secret bunkers, discovered in Rome’s central Palazzo Venezia, will be opened to the public this fall, reports La Stampa. City superintendent Anna Imponente and architect Carlo Serafini originally unearthed the bunker in early 2011 when engineers were carrying out work on the foundations of the famous Italian palazzo. On discovering a small wooden trap door, they descended a narrow flight of brick stairs that led them to the bunker. There had been no official records of the hideout, which had been abandoned during construction. (TIME: Was Mussolini Misunderstood?) “When we saw the reinforced concrete, we realized what it was,” Serafini told La Stampa. “Mussolini never stayed there but without a doubt he would have gone down to inspect the progress of the work.” The bunker is 50 feet below ground, so deep that it also revealed some buried Roman ruins. However, the rough concrete walls and holes in the wall for electric wiring show that the hideout was never finished. Serafini also believes the bunker was designed for two people, most likely Mussolini and his mistress, Claretta Petacci. The bunker was built at the end of 1942 when Mussolini began to worry that the Royal Air Force (RAF) was planning an assassination attempt on the Italian leader and an attack on his headquarters. He was right – in July 1943 Air Marshal Arthur “Bomber” Harris proposed a plan to simultaneously bomb the Palazzo Venezia and the Villa Torlonia where Mussolini’s family lived, Christopher Duggan told the Daily Telegraph. However, Winston Churchill and the British Foreign Secretary, Anthony Eden, rejected the plan, believing it would fail. They also worried that British bombers could cause real damage to the nearby ancient ruins including the Roman Forum and the Colosseum. (TIME: Arrivederci, Italia: Why Young Italians are Leaving) The bunker has two escape routes, one to the gardens of San Marco and another that goes to the Altare della Patria where there was another bunker. But Mussolini never got the chance to find out how safe the bunker was. He was imprisoned

A fishmonger in southern China found a live bomb inside one of his squid. The man — identified only as Mr. Huang by the Guangzhou Daily — said that while he was gutting the squid, his knife suddenly hit something metallic. That turned out to be a 3-lb. unexploded bomb. The 8-in.-long device had apparently been swallowed by the squid — itself measuring over 3 ft. The mollusk was caught in shallow waters off Guangdong province and taken to the local fish market. (MORE: Alien Autopsy: Inside a Big Squid) Chinese authorities speculated that the bomb, although old and rusty, was fully operational and might have been dropped by a warplane. They could not say how old it was or whether it was of Chinese origin, writes the Daily Mail. Police took the bomb away to be detonated in a controlled explosion. Huang, who has been a fishmonger for 10 years, told the Guangzhou Daily: “This sort of squid lives close to the shore and normally makes a meal of small fish and prawns. (MORE: How Deadly Weapons Continue to Rule Daily Life) “Perhaps he thought the bomb was his favorite food and gulped it down. He certainly had a big belly when he was caught.” Reporting the incident, the Guangzhou Daily reminded its readers to always call the police if they find explosives in their food.
