It’s a toy! It’s a plane! It’s…an X-Wing made entirely of LEGOs? That’s right: almost 30 years to the date after the release of Return of the Jedi, LEGO is stoking Star Wars fans with a life-sized replica of the iconic aircraft, which just debuted in Times Square. Some 5.3 million LEGO bricks were used to build the 46,000-pound model, besting the Mecha Robot to become the largest LEGO creation in the world. (MORE: WATCH: The World’s Longest Working LEGO Railway) How’d they do it? “Very carefully,” quips Eric Varszegi, a LEGO “master builder” who consulted on the project. And yes, that’s his actual job title. Planning began roughly 18 months ago, at a LEGO facility in the Czech Republic. Execs knew they wanted something big and Star Wars-y to promote their new toy-inspired animated miniseries (The Yoda Chronicles, premiering May 29 on Cartoon Network), and recreating a fan-favorite flier like the X-Wing “just seemed like a great thing to do,” says Varszegi. (MORE: The 8 Best Lego Reenactments) But this was no ordinary plaything. The official X-Wing prop planes—as LEGO learned from Lucasfilm—measure 42 feet from tip to tail, with a lengthy wingspan. They’re also 11 feet tall. Structurally, says Varszegi, there was no way a creation that big could rise from LEGO bricks alone, especially if it needed to weather earthquakes (a must when it moves to a Legoland theme park) and support kids in the cockpit (hello, photo-ops). So the engineers started sketching. Their solution: a steel substructure, which would be wholly covered in real LEGO bricks to preserve the illusion of LEGO-ness. They also chose to keep the wings closed, because the open “X” formation would be tough to execute safely. Courtesy Lego Systems Inc. Click to enlarge. Once plans were set, 32 builders worked day and night to make them a reality, placing one tiny LEGO after another. “That first brick is always the biggest challenge,” Varszegi recalls. “If you put it in the wrong spot, it will throw everything off.” Several months later, the finished X-Wing was shipped to the States—because, alas,

Americans may be on shaky ground when it comes to geography knowledge, but don’t tell that to 12-year-old Sathwik Karnik of Plainville, Mass., the official winner of the 2013 National Geographic Bee. (MORE: Nepal Says Historic Everest Video Call Was Illegal) The contest, hosted by Jeopardy‘s Alex Trebek (in his final Bee appearance) along with former Bee vets Amy Bucci and Brian Howard, was live-blogged by National Geographic’s Melody Kramer, who reported the winning question just before 11:30 E.T. “Because the earth bulges at the equator, which mountain peak on the earth is farthest from the earth’s center?” Bucci asked Karnik. Karnik’s (correct) answer: Chimborazo. Karnik’s win came after a tense final “best of five” duel with 13-year-old Conrad Oberhaus of Lincolnshire, Ill. On the first question, both answered correctly, but on the second, Oberhaus failed to correctly identify the largest city in China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region — Karnik, on the other hand, nailed it: Baotou. Both boys answered the remaining questions correctly, but Oberhaus needed Karnik to miss a question to stay in the game. According to Ben Nuckols, writing for Associated Press, this was Karnik’s first time participating in the Bee finals, having previously lost to his older brother in both the 2011 and 2012 state-level Massachusetts Bees. “I’m just shocked,” said Karnik. “I didn’t think I could win. I thought I would end up somewhere in the top 10.” His winnings: a $25,000 scholarship, a trip to the Galapagos Islands (made famous by evolutionary theorist Charles Darwin) and a lifetime membership in the National Geographic society.
Be nice, worship God and eat pigs’ feet: That’s how Jeralean Talley of Inkster, Michigan says she lived to celebrate her 114th birthday today — and be crowned the oldest person in the United States. Using census records, the Gerontology Research Group verified her title after the previous oldest American, Elsie Thompson, died at 113 in March. Talley is still a youngster, relatively speaking, compared to the world’s oldest person, Jiroemon Kimura, who is 116 and lives in Japan. (MORE: 80-Year-Old Heart Surgery Survivor Aims for Everest Climbing Record) In a phone conversation on the eve of her 114th birthday, Talley told TIME, “I feel okay.” These days, the supercentenarian lives with her daughter Thelma Holloway, 75, and says she passes the time by watching The Ellen DeGeneres Show and Wheel of Fortune as well as listening to baseball on the radio – though she doesn’t have a favorite team. She can stay up as late as midnight and feasts on her favorite foods: potato salad, honey buns, McDonald’s chicken nuggets and Wendy’s chili. Holloway says her mother stayed active over the years by sewing dresses, making quilts and playing the slot machines at casinos. She also bowled until she was about 104 and her legs got too weak – but not before scoring 200 in one game. Now Talley, who sits all day, tries to work out by waving her arms in the air and kicking her feet. Twice a year, she goes fishing for catfish and trout with her friend Michael Kinloch, 54, an engineer she met at church in 1990. “She literally throws her line in, and I’ll run over and try to pull in the fish,” he says. “We do that routine until she gets tired of it, and then we’ll head home.” Courtesy of Michael Kinloch Jeralean Talley (center), her daughter Thelma Holloway (back), fishing buddy Michael Kinloch (right) and his son and Talley’s godson Tyler Kinloch (left), at the supercentenarian’s 113th birthday celebration last May 2012.
Modern cell phones still take forever to charge, from a brisk but often still inconvenient 20 minutes to upwards of a full hour. So imagine how revolutionary a charger that’d do the job in less than half a minute might be. (WATCH: Oklahoma Family Leaves Tornado Shelter to Find Home Destroyed) 18-year-old Indian-American science student Eesha Khare of Saratoga, Calif. proposed solving the problem using a supercharger that slides into your mobile phone’s battery, allowing it to charge in just 20 to 30 seconds. In fact Khare did more than just propose it, she actually built a tiny super-capacitor and demonstrated its ability to power an LED device. Here’s her description of the project in a California State Science Fair outline: With the rapid growth of portable electronics, it has become necessary to develop efficient energy-storage technology to match this development. While batteries are currently used for energy-storage, they suffer from long charging times and short cycle life. Electrochemical supercapacitors have attracted attention as energy-storage devices because they bridge the gap between current alternatives of conventional capacitors and batteries, offering higher energy density than conventional capacitors and higher power density than batteries. Despite these advantages, supercapacitor energy density is much lower than batteries and increasing energy density remains a key challenge in supercapacitor research. The goal of this work was to design and synthesize a supercapacitor with increased energy density while maintaining power density and long cycle life. Mission accomplished: In addition to accolades for actually designing the device, the project secured Khare one of two runner-up spots in Intel’s International Science and Engineering Fair, where she beat out over 1,600 finalists from more than 70 countries, netting her a cool $50,000 in prize money. (The top prize, $75,000, went to 19-year-old Romanian Ionut Budisteanu’s design work on a low-cost autonomous vehicle control system.) “I’m in a daze. I can’t believe this happened,” Eesha told San Francisco CBS affiliate KPIX 5. Why’d she pick this particular design challenge? “My cellphone battery always dies,” Khare told NBC News, adding that her device is

We might say “Don’t try this at home,” but then what are the chances your home is anywhere near an almost 4,000-foot-long bridge with a peak height of more than 1,000 feet? (MORE: North Korean Amusement Park To Feature Big Ben and Eiffel Tower) We’re talking about the rough, completely terrifying dimensions of the recently completed (in 2011) Aizhai suspension bridge in central China’s Hunan province — ranked the sixth highest bridge in the world — where Norwegian acrobat Eskil Ronningsbakken decided to do considerably more than sightsee. Instead, he opted to travel on foot out to the bridge’s center — the highest part, overlooking the lush Dehang Canyon — descend from the bridge’s deck to stand on a lattice of red-painted steel girders, then perform strength-related balancing stunts — without safety cables or tethers — on chairs, jutting cables and other industrial protuberances that’d probably frighten away the steeliest Cirque tumbler. And then he slid out onto a rope ladder dangling from a hot air balloon while wearing a blindfold of some sort, occasionally balancing like a tightrope walker, at other moments hanging upside-down like a trapeze artist. And he did all that despite fairly strong winds. “The flag is moving quite a lot,” says Ronningsbakken in the video, indicating a briskly rippling red flag in the background. “Ideally for a balloon it should be still.” MORE: Hey, Peter Jackson: Willie Nelson Wants a Part in The Hobbit Films

You might want to take a minute to hear this one. At New York City’s Lincoln Center subway stop on Thursday, passengers got an unexpected treat while waiting for their train. The 37-year-old, Grammy award-winning singer Michael Bublé performed the Jackson 5 hit, “Who’s Lovin You,” with a cappella group Naturally 7 to a group of surprised subway riders, who whipped out their cellphones to record the event in due order. (MORE: Odd Couples: 10 Weird Christmas Duets) Bublé joked with members of Naturally 7 about the performance afterward. “That is when you know you made it, singing in a New York subway,” he said. The song is featured on Bublé’s upcoming album, “To Be Loved,” which will be released next week.

You’ve heard of extreme sports thrill-seekers who leap from vertiginous heights wearing bird-like wingsuits, then plunge to earth at literally breakneck speeds? Someone just did that and managed to steer through a tiny hole in an enormous rock face located in Montserrat, Spain, traveling at more than 150 m.p.h. (WATCH: Dramatic Footage of Fertilizer Plant Explosion Near Waco Texas) Had Italian/Norwegian BASE-jumper Alexander Polli’s timing been off even slightly, he surely would have died, smashing into the solid rock surrounding the cave-like gap at horrifying speeds. Needless to say, you don’t do something like this on a whim: In the two-minute video above you’ll see Polli preparing by test-flying directly through (and smashing to pieces) signs reading “2013″ to essentially prove (and no doubt hone) his ability to follow carefully plotted trajectories and strike precise targets. After reviewing the shape of the cave itself (more or less triangular), Polli hops in a helicopter and climbs high above his target before stepping out and plummeting, then extending his arms like a flying squirrel. Then the truly terrifying sequence: from a camera presumably embedded in Polli’s helmet, you see the rock wall in the distance getting closer but the gap never really getting bigger. It’s hard to imagine what must have been going through Polli’s head in that final second or two, approaching his life or death moment. But then he’s through, amazingly, streaking just above a splash of gravel and scrub, a plume of white issuing from behind him like a jet contrail. Okay, so the cut between Polli leaping from a cliff and a screeching hawk at the beginning is a little corny, but then anyone willing to attempt something as completely nuts as this deserves all the narrative leeway in the world.
Reasonsmysoniscrying.tumblr.com is less than a week old, but it’s already dominating our social media feeds. The Tumblr is basically a photo gallery of a cherubic, Macaulay Culkin-esque tyke in tears — reminding us of how we really feel most Mondays and how even the most trivial things can totally set us off. According to Mashable, the site first popped up on Reddit over the weekend and had risen to the front page late Sunday. Now when a new parent or babysitter searches online for the cause of their kid’s spontaneous tears, this site will have them nodding their heads and feeling a little bit better that other peoples’ babies also cry because they “broke the cheese in half.” I broke this cheese in half

You’ve maybe heard about the woman who summited Mr. Everest twice in a week, and about the U.S. teenager with Down syndrome who made history by hiking 70 miles to Everest Base Camp. But have you heard about the octogenarian who’s made not one, but four trips to the hospital for heart surgery, and who — despite those ailments — wants to become the oldest person to climb the highest mountain the world? (MORE: History Made: U.S. Teen with Down Syndrome Reaches Everest Base Camp) Because why not, right? It’s only a mountain…you know, that’s 29,029 feet above sea level, or the highest point on the planet. But for Yuichiro Miura, an 80-year-old mountain climber from Japan, it’s more a matter of “been there, done that.” Twice already, that is: Miura summited Everest once in 2003 and again in 2008. As if that weren’t enough, according to Reuters, he even skied down the mountain back in 1970 from a height of over 26,000 feet. If he completes this third attempt to reach the top, he’ll becomes the oldest person in the world to do so, surpassing Min Bahadur Sherchan, a Nepali who set the record aged 76 in 2008. “The record is not so important for me,” said Miura, speaking to Reuters from Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, just before leaving to begin the attempt, adding ”It is important to get to the top.” What about his heart? Miura and the team of nine others accompanying him will include a heart specialist who’ll presumably be keeping a close eye on Miura the entire way. With a little luck, Miura and the team hope to reach the summit in May.
It’s more than most will ever be able to say they accomplished: climb to an incredible 17,598 feet and set foot within Mt. Everest’s rocky, snow-glazed Base Camp. (MORE: What Is the Red Equal Sign All Over Facebook and Twitter?) Eli Reimer, a teen from Bend, Ore. who also has Down syndrome, made history by hiking 70 miles with his father, Justin Riemer, and a team of seven other people to the famed Himalayan mountain’s lofty staging area, all to raise money and awareness for the disabled. Everest has two base camps — one in China (North Base Camp) at 16,900 feet and another in Nepal (South Base Camp) at just under 17,600 feet; Eli and his father climbed to the latter. Just getting to one of Everest’s Base Camps is a major challenge, and climbers then have to wait, usually for several days, to acclimatize to the high altitude before continuing up the mountain. According to WBTV.com, when Eli and his father stepped off their return flight to L.A. International Airport on Friday, March 22 — shortly after World Down Syndrome Day on March 21 — they received a warm welcome from supporters. “We’re able to celebrate that as we departed Katmandu with [Eli] just completing something that as far as we know, no other teen with Down Syndrome [in the U.S.] has done, so it’s monumental,” said Justin Riemer. In an email to TIME, Reimer noted that a 35-year-old man from the U.K. was the first “and only other person” with Down syndrome to climb to the Base Camp. Eli and Justin’s trip reportedly raised $85,000 in donations for Justin and his wife Tamara’s organization The Elisha Foundation, which offers support to families “affected by any disability.” WATCH: Celebrity Jeopardy Pits Joseph Gordon Levitt Against Kirsten Dunst — in 1997

On a scale of zero to infinity, how silly would you rate a world record for “tightest parallel parking”? Far side of the Buzz Lightyear catchphrase? (MORE: Mansion Caretaker Sued for Drinking $102,000 of Historical Whiskey) Still, it’s interesting because we’ve all been there, right? How many times have you had to play “bumper chrome” because some people have rudely decided their place in a parking spot should include half of another? So we could probably learn something from the mad auto-maneuvering adroitness of these two U.K.-based brothers, who each managed to consecutively one-up the previous world record for the trickiest bit of fender-bender-free parallel parking in recorded history. According to Guinness World Records, Gloucester natives Alastair and John Moffatt managed to slide a couple Mini Mayfairs between two other cars with just 13.1 centimeters to spare — a tick more than the diameter of a compact disc. That made it a world record at nearly a full centimeter less than prior record-holder, Ronny Wechselberger, whose feat stood at 14 centimeters. The craziest part? To challenge the record, the brothers had to speed toward the parked vehicles, then spin-slide their cars into place sidewise, keeping everything in tight alignment back to front and avoiding touching the curb, all of which looks just as crazy as it sounds in the video. Remarkably, no cars were harmed during the attempt — though you’ll spot a few minor bump-ins and nudges during the initial failed attempts, there’s nary a scratch or dent on the bookending vehicles. Thank apparent LEGO-phile Antonio Toscano, who’s also responsible for an equally elaborate, clever and comical LEGO version of the second Man of Steel trailer. His plastic brick rendition of the official trailer for the J.J. Abrams-helmed upcoming Star Trek (2009) sequel starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Benedict Cumberbatch is pitch perfect, from the race though a red-leafed forest (and leap from a cliff) to the Enterprise nose-plowing through a river somewhere. What a LEGO week: first LEGO City Undercover for the Wii U, now this. All we’re missing is a LEGO parody video of PSY’s Gangnam Style – oh wait.
An ATM giving out free money sounds too good to be true — or possibly even illegal. But those who used this red-and-white ATM unobtrusively stationed in various locations around Spain discovered it was the real deal — although there’s a catch. The machine, whose screen displays a message reading “Withdraw 100€ [about $130] free of charge without a bank card,” gave participants the chance to claim free cash — as long as they promised to share it. The ATM then provides the user with a few ideas on how to share — buying diapers for a pregnant woman, donating a sack of balls to a local playing field, etc. — and an envelope pops out of the machine with crisp euro notes packed neatly inside. “In the same era as ‘bad banks’,” the ad tells viewers, “there is born an ATM of happiness.” (MORE: With Age Comes Happiness) There’s another catch, of course. The “Cajero de la Felicidad” — literally, “ATM of Happiness” — is a marketing stunt created by McCann Spain for Coca-Cola, reports media trade publication DigiDay. It’s one of a series of YouTube videos produced for the soft drink giant’s “Open Happiness” campaign — which also gave rise to this sweet ad, titled “Cameras,” that aired during the Super Bowl. But the most interesting thing about the video is what people actually did with the cash, as shown in clips of videos they sent in to Coca-Cola. Spain is reeling from continued economic stagnation and an unemployment rate of 26%, according to MSN Money. So seeing the genuine smiles light up the faces of givers and receivers alike — sharing a meal with strangers, buying a tricycle for a neighborhood kid, giving an old couple theater tickets — is enough to bring tears to your eyes. (As it did the woman at the very end who is serenaded by a surprise flamenco band.) As Gizmodo’s Jesus Diaz wrote, “This video will restore your faith in humanity.” (MORE: The New Science of Happiness)

Ed Koch, the colorful, headstrong mayor who led New York out of a nightmarish fiscal crisis in the 1980s, died Friday morning of congestive heart failure. He was 88. His three-term mayorship, from 1978 to 1989, brought tough new cuts and policies to the nation’s largest city, as a result landing him frequently in the pages of TIME. His 12 years at City Hall proved the power of restraint — he described himself as a “liberal with sanity,” often asking constitutents the question that became his catchphrase — “How’m I doing?” — along with a cheery thumbs-up. And the answer, more often than not, was a positive one. Even after his retirement, Koch managed to maintain a political presence, finding his endorsements and editorials in much demand. He penned numerous op-eds in defense of Israel, as he was “fiercely proud of his Jewish faith,” his epitaph reads. (PHOTOS: The Life and Legacy of Ed Koch, 1924-2013) Koch, a lifelong bachelor, often sidestepped rumors about his sexual orientation — often with some choice words for his critics. During his initial mayoral run in 1977, he was bolstered by his close relationship with former beauty queen Bess Myerson. He never did marry — and the rumors persisted – but it’s clear that Koch’s first and only love was the city he served. Here’s what TIME wrote about the mayor over the course of his three terms: On his broad appeal: But none of this really explains Koch, who remains remarkably mysterious for an apparently open man. Some of the mystery is due to his living alone and keeping his own counsel. Some is due to the fact that there are sides to Koch that do not smack of Establishment at all — a strong egalitarian impulse that continually rises to the surface, coupled with genuine comfort in mixing with all classes and races, without any feelings of personal superiority. (A Mayor for All Seasons, June 15, 1981) On frugality: He lives in a one-bedroom Greenwich Village apartment, where he occasionally cooks steaks

A rare Liberty Head nickel is making its way to auction, where it could fetch millions of dollars for its owners. The 1913 nickel is only one of five known of its kind, created, scholars believe, when a mint worker illegally cast the coin in 1912. According to the Associated Press, the coin’s value is due to its unique history. A mint worker named Samuel W. Brown is suspected of secretly producing a set of five Liberty Head coins dated 1913 — the year that the Buffalo Nickel was due to go into circulation, and one in which there were no official Liberty Head coins minted. Brown sold the set in 1920 at the American Numismatic Association Convention in Chicago, where it passed through various owners until the collection was split up. (LIST: Top 10 Things You Didn’t Know About the Penny) This is where things get interesting: A collector by the name of George O. Walton ended up purchasing the coin in question in the mid-1940s. In 1962, Walton died in a car crash; he happened to have the nickel on him at the time, and that coin, along with hundreds of others, was given to his sister Melva Givens. But at the time, the coin was believed to be a fake; Givens stuck the 1913 nickel in an envelope and put it in a closet, where it remained until she died in 1992. It wasn’t until Givens’ death that her four children took it to an appraiser at the American Numismatic Association World’s Fair of Money in 2003. It was, indeed, deemed the missing coin and was reunited with its four brethren. (MORE: Rare $5 Alaska Bill Worth $300,000 Goes to Auction) The coin will be sold on April 25 at a numismatic auction at Heritage Auction house in Chicago where it’s expected to fetch several million dollars. “Basically a coin with a story and a rarity will trump everything else,” Douglas Mudd, curator of the American Numismatic Association Money Museum in Colorado Springs, Colo., told the Associated Press.

When a customer at a Houston restaurant made a disparaging crack about a little boy with Down Syndrome, waiter Michael Garcia couldn’t hold back his feelings. He refused to serve the customers and gave them a lesson in manners. Last week, Kim Castillo was at Laurenzo’s Prime Rib with Milo, her 5-year-old son. The Castillos are regulars at the restaurant, like family to many of the waitstaff, including Garcia. A family sitting nearby, also regulars, asked to be moved from their current booth, which was right next to Milo and his mom. “Special needs children need to be special somewhere else,” said one of the customers, reported Houston’s KPRC-TV. That’s when Garcia cracked. “‘How could you say that?’” Garcia demanded of the customer before they left Laurenzo’s. “‘How could you say that about a beautiful 5-year-old angel?’” Kim Castillo was touched, but concerned that Garcia might lose his job for refusing to serve the customers. I don’t think he stopped and thought about what he was doing.” The restaurant stood by Garcia. The rest of the country did, too: Garcia, who has worked at Laurenzo’s for two years and enthusiastically greets the Castillos whenever they come in, has been lauded as a hero for standing up for Milo. Admirers across the country have flooded the restaurant’s Facebook with appreciative posts, and many have sought out Garcia to thank him in person. “The business has just been huge,” said Candace Roberts, a server at Laurenzo’s. “People are coming in to shake his hand and eat at our restaurant and loving it.” One Facebook user, who posted a note of thanks on the restaurant’s page, said she would make a point to eat at Laurenzo’s the next time she was

Disks, tamagotchis, 56k modems and more importantly, the Oregon Trail – Microsoft sure knows how us to get us reminiscing. The software company has debuted a new Internet Explorer ad that might be tugging on your heart strings just a little bit, especially if you grew up during the 90s. In an Instagram-less world, actually eating your Lunchables instead of photographing it remained supreme. (MORE: Microsoft Takes Aim at Google’s New Privacy Policy with Ad Campaign) The ad, which is clearly aimed at Gen Y-ers between the ages of 20 and 35, invokes some super serious nostalgia between the demographic most likely to use other browsers. It’s all part of Microsoft’s newest campaign over “the brower you love to hate.” While Microsoft has us yearning for simpler times, it’s still hard to see us ditching Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox in favor of Internet Explorer just yet.
