R & B singer Miguel may be known for his smooth voice, but it was his not-so-smooth moves that landed him in trouble – and on a fan’s head – during Sunday night’s Billboard Music Awards. The 27-year-old California singer, whose full name is Miguel Jontel Pimentel, was performing his hit “Adorn” during the awards ceremony at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, when he attempted to leap over the heads of fans watching the show from an audience pit, which was about six feet wide. He took a few steps back before trying to make the flying jump over the audience. He managed to make it to the second stage, but kicked two women in the head and arm before falling on stage. In the video, you can see Miguel continue to sing while checking on the women he tackled, one of whom appeared to hit the floor, disappearing from camera view. He later tweeted: got caught up in the moment, thank goodness Khyati is okay — Miguel (@MiguelUnlimited) May 20, 2013 Another tweet showed a video of the young woman smiling standing next to the visibly embarrassed singer. Miguel told Billboard magazine: “I think it’s kind of clear what happened. But I’m very happy to bring my new friend, Khyati, we just met. Unfortunately we, did not meet under the best circumstances, but I think we’re okay.” MORE: Taylor Swift Wins 8 Trophies at Billboard Awards MORE: Grammys 2013: The Complete List of Winners

Star Trek Into Darkness Though he’d already established himself as a name to watch in television terms, as the creator of Lost and Alias, it’s only since J.J. Abrams stepped up to making movies that he’s been anointed by some as the next Steven Spielberg. But while his work on Mission: Impossible III and, to a far greater extent, Super 8, has been praised, it’s surely the 2009 reboot of Star Trek that thrust him into the premier league of directors. Abrams’ fun, action-packed take on Gene Roddenberry’s original 1960s vision (which had already inspired countless spin-off series and films) grossed nearly $400 million worldwide, which is why expectations are just as high the second time around for Abrams and his crew. His cast is all back – including Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, Zachary Quinto playing Spock and Karl Urban as Bones – but this big screen version of Trek (the 12th!) gets a serious upgrade in the bad guy department with Britain’s Benedict Cumberbatch as John Harrison. He’s a cold and calculating terrorist who sets off a bomb at a Starfleet archive in 23rd century England. Revenge is on the mind of Kirk, who is able to forgo a fair trial and try to track him down. Coming to the movies just weeks after the events of the Boston Marathon bombing, and the subsequent manhunt for the suspects, the instruction to, “run this bastard down,” has an eerie resonance. Once again, the critics are mainly of the opinion that what Abrams has created should live long and prosper. And the supposed theory surrounding Trek movies – that the even-numbered ones are better than the odd – is holding up too. “Abrams has a gift for making us feel as if Star Trek Into Darkness vaulted from our own Trek-ish daydreams,” notes New York magazine. “In some sense, the title is misleading. Into Darkness is a blast, fun, funny, spectacular and exhilarating,” concludes Empire. And the Guardian reserves special praise for Cumberbatch: “As the supervillain, in closeup, Cumberbatch really

Three U.S. Supreme Court judges presided over a libel case between a tyrannical Roman general and the fictitious Latin Tribune newspaper for a mock trial based upon a William Shakespeare tragedy on Monday. Coriolanus may be one of the Bard’s bleakest works, but the senior judges still managed to engineer a few laughs during the exercise. The play is currently being performed at Washington’s Shakespeare Theatre and the judicial send-up is an annual tradition. (MORE: Was Shakespeare a Humble Schoolmaster During His ‘Lost Years’?) Prominent Washington lawyer Lisa Blatt, a partner at Arnold & Porter, argued on behalf of the British-style tabloid, while former U.S. Solicitor-General Seth P. Waxman represented the general’s estate. Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer, Samuel Alito and four appeals court judges were adjudicating. The occasion was treated with appropriate frivolity; proceedings at Sidney Harman Hall were peppered with clever one-liners and allusions to current political hot potatoes. At one point Alito quipped, “it’s impossible to separate facts from fiction” as he read the paper, reports Reuters. The story of Coriolanus is a pretty grim affair. After returning to Rome a war hero he begins campaigning for political office. However, his despotic tendencies soon bring him into conflict with the populace — he is opposed to farmers setting their own grain prices — and he compares democratic rule to allowing “crows to peck the eagles.” Coriolanus is eventually driven from the city but returns with reinforcements bent on revenge. However, his mother convinces him to renege, and he is slain by his new allies as a traitor. (WATCH: There Will Be Bard: Shakespeare in the Park) Dissecting the intricacies of such a morbid plot is naturally child’s play for the assembled Supreme Court bigwigs. Blatt at one point reminded judges that Coriolanus wanted to “skewer people with his lance.” However, the National Lance Association’s insistence “that lances don’t kill people, people kill people only strengthens our case,” she explained, drawing mirth from the audience, according to the Washingtonian. The court eventually ruled in favor of the Fourth

The Great Gatsby Tagline: Can’t repeat the past … of course you can! Australian auteur Baz Luhrmann has come in for a fair amount of flak for his version of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Great American Novel, The Great Gatsby. It’s not as if Luhrmann had too much to deal with when it came to bettering previous versions – there have been five, if you include the made-for-TV version starring Toby Stephens and Mira Sorvino – which haven’t seemed to have made too many people’s best of lists. That said, the 1974 version starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow did make the front cover of a certain weekly magazine… But still, the fact that Luhrmann filmed his take on the 1925 book in 3-D, and has hip-hop on the soundtrack, hasn’t pleased everyone. “Not to sound idiotic or pretentious, but I never start these things to be controversial,” he told the New York Times recently. “I never start thinking they’re going to be a big deal.” If you’re not familiar with the source text, The Great Gatsby focuses on would-be writer Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) who has left the Midwest for the New York City of 1922. He, like so many others, is after the American Dream. His neighbor, Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), seems to have achieved that dream and is interested in Carraway’s cousin, Daisy (Carey Mulligan), despite her being married to Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton). Carraway gets drawn into a world which is foreign to him and begins to write a tale after bearing witness to their exploits. The critics who have witnessed Luhrmann’s current exploits have, in the main, been distinctly underwhelmed. “Even when the movie’s not working, its style fascinates,” begins the Chicago Sun-Times. “That “not working” part is a deal breaker, though — and it has little to do with Luhrmann’s stylistic gambits, and everything to do with his inability to reconcile them with an urge to play things straight.” The LA Times is even harsher: “On paper Gatsby sounds like quite the film. On screen, though,

Iron Man 3 He’s back. Not content with bringing his industrialist figure of Tony Stark, who transforms into Iron Man, to the big screen on a bunch of occasions, Robert Downey Jr. returns for the dreaded threequel. Why dreaded? Because the third part of a well-established franchise can often fall flat (Spider-Man 3, The Godfather Part 3, to name but two examples). But with Iron Man 2 not exactly receiving gushing reviews, and the fact that Downey has teamed up again with director Shane Black (they made the entertaining Kiss Kiss Bang Bang in 2005), perhaps all involved with Iron Man 3 are playing with house money. As for the plot, Stark is in a spot of bother, what with his personal world coming crashing down around him, due to his latest enemy, the Mandarin (portrayed by Ben Kingley in quite possibly his best role since playing the terrifying Don Logan in 2001′s Sexy Beast). But Stark being Stark (as well as Iron Man), he makes it a personal mission to find those responsible. TIME’s movie critic Richard Corliss has described Iron Man 3 as a movie of “nifty thrills and ruthless sauciness”: Besides rehabbing a hero who overcomes anxiety to save the world and defeat the terror-industrial complex by the simple matter of cloning his body armor, the movie proves that there’s still intelligent life on Planet Marvel. As you’re propelled out of the theater on IM3′s hydraulic lift of pleasures, you’re likely to say, “That is how it’s done.” Other reviewers are mainly calling the film a return to form. ”Black proves the perfect blacksmith, forging smart new tech and scenarios for the swaggering super-genius. If this does turn out to be Downey Jr.’s final solo outing, it’s a very strong exit,” concludes Empire. “The movie has some claim on being the best of the series, thanks largely to the input of its co-writer and director, Shane Black … for the way it introduces into action movie conventions transformative aspects like bathos, deadpan comedy and humdrum detail,” notes the New Statesman. But the Village Voice can’t

The house where Alfred Hitchcock penned the classic 1963 suspense thriller, The Birds, was recently put on sale for $1.4 million. The four-bedroom, four-bath colonial house in Westchester County, New York, currently belongs to Hollywood screenwriter James Hart, who has written feature films such as Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Contact and a new upcoming one called Epic, which will star Colin Farrell, Christoph Waltz and Beyoncé Knowles. (LIST: Nail-Biting Allowed: Alfred Hitchcock’s 10 Most Memorable Scenes) Hart, who has owned the house since 1994, only recently learned The Birds was written in the house’s barn. In an interview with the New York Daily News, Hart told the paper: “We call this the house Dracula bought. The odd thing is I write with a famous photograph of Hitchcock over my shoulder for inspiration. Lots of coincidences like that occurred. One day, out of nowhere, hundreds of birds landed in the surrounding trees.” The unassuming two-bedroom barn was originally constructed in Napa, Calif. but was moved piece-by-piece during the Great Depression by its previous owner, though it is not known whether this was done by Hitchcock or someone else.
How do you say “May the Force be with you” in Navajo? “May the force be with you,” might translate into “may you walk with great power,” or “may you have the power within you,” Laura Tohe, a fluent Navajo speaker and English professor at Arizona State University, told Yahoo. The correct translation of the famous movie phrase matters, because the 1977 sci-fi classic film, Star Wars or – if the online English to Dine translator can be trusted – Sǫʼ Baaʼ, is being translated into the Navajo language. The Navajo Nation Museum and Lucasfilm are working together to dub Star Wars: A New Hope into the Navajo native language of Diné bizaad, a language spoken by around 210,000 people. Manuelito Wheeler, the director of the Navajo Nation Museum who approached Lucasfilm with the idea, sees the project as an entertaining and educational to preserve the Navajo language. It’s also a way to engage younger members of the Navajo tribe and teach them their native tongue in a fun and captivating way. Actors who already speak the language can auditions for voice-over roles, including Luke, Leia, Han Solo and Darth Vader. Auditions are scheduled for May 3 and May 4 at the Navajo Nation Museum in Window Rock, AZ. (MORE: It’s the End for LucasArts (1982-2013), Though What Have We Lost, Really?) “Youth around the world have been inspired by the theme of Star Wars that every individual has the power within them to become a hero,” said Lynne Hale, a spokeswoman for Lucasfilm, speaking with the Farmington Daily Times. “We are thrilled that the youth of the Navajo Nation will now see the film in their native tongue.” Star Wars, says the Daily Times, will be the first movie ever translated and re-cut in Diné. The Diné version is scheduled to debut July 4 at the Navajo Nation Fair in Window Rock, with plans to show it at local movie theaters across the reservation, which stretches into New Mexico, Utah and Arizona, as well as in metropolitan areas with

Clowns who can twist a balloon into a dog or bear are pretty impressive. But they have nothing on airigami a balloon artist collective lead by Larry Moss. His team crafted a 20-foot dinosaur out of balloons in the middle of the Virginia Museum of Natural History. The result is like a family-friendly version of Jurassic Park 3D, with a towering acrocanthosaurus – a dinosaur from the early cretaceous period–looming over spectators. The enormous balloon sculpture took four days to build, with the help of a team of balloon artists, museum staff and some school children. This time lapse video allows you two watch the action in under two minutes, showing the intricate planning and careful construction that goes into building 20-foot balloon dinosaur. On the airigami blog, Moss writes that building the acrocanthosaurus in the museum aided the elaborate process, “Having a life-size model next to us sure made the construction a lot easier. Our design, based on images we found online, was pretty accurate, but it was nice to be able to look up and take measurements off of the real thing.” If you are in Virginia and want to see the sculpture, you better hurry. The acrocanthosaurus will only be around as long as the air remains in the balloons. Then, it too will go the way of the dinosaurs.
The South Korean pop star Psy — also known as Park Jae-sang — and his newest single have snagged a Guinness world record for the most viewed video online in 24 hours — and it only needed to hit 38 million views to do that. (MORE: South Korean TV Network Bans Psy’s ‘Gentleman’ Music Video) Since being released almost two weeks ago, “Gentleman” has racked up more than 248 million views compared with “Gangnam Style,” which now has been played a staggering 1.5 billion times. “Gentleman” managed to acquire 100 million views in four days, while it took “Gangnam Style” almost two months to reach the same threshold. Scooter Braun, the talent manager who signed Psy to Schoolboy Records (and a 2013 TIME 100 honoree), told MTV he was optimistic about the new single’s success. “It went like No. 1 in like 52 countries, so it was kind of mind-blowing for us. But [Psy] is just fun. And I think he’s coming to the States end of this week to start performing it on TV, and around the world. And he represents having a good time, so good for him.” (MORE: Psy Unveils His New ‘Gentleman’ Video and Dance at Extravagant Seoul Concert) Previously, the world-record holder for most viewed video online in 24 hours was the 2012 YouTube viral clip that spotlighted Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony.

Comedy fans rejoice. YouTube is hosting its first-ever comedy week in May, and you can expect some big names to take part in the largest open mic on the planet. Google’s video-sharing website announced on Thursday that the seven-day cyber extravaganza, YouTube Comedy Week, will run from May 19 to May 25 and feature some of the best comedy across its expansive video platform, the Associated Press reported. The mega-serving of standup will include a collection of live events, video premieres and collaborations, according to Mashable. To guarantee laughs, some of comedy’s biggest names are submitting contributions, including Sarah Silverman, Rainn Wilson, Michael Cera, Vince Vaughn and Seth Rogen. Former Saturday Night Live cast member Andy Samberg’s comedy troupe The Lonely Island also plans to debut new videos, according to the AP. (WATCH: YouTube Announces It Will Shut Down) And in homage to the event’s digital roots, web celebrities are also expected to contribute — the Gregory Brothers (the “Auto-Tune the News” crew) and the team behind Epic Rap Battles of History are expected to join in, Wired reported. And popular comedy destinations with YouTube channels are also participating, such as The Onion, Funny or Die, Nerdist and CollegeHumor. The video-sharing website’s latest foray with comedy is apparently just the start of a new strategy. The site is hoping to congregate its diverse group of stars with varied talents – from Hollywood professionals to Internet upstarts – to present a more unified experience for users, the AP said. The company spent millions of dollars developing original programming, which it hopes the theme weeks will help to highlight, according to Wired. “We’re hoping to do this in a pretty regular rhythm,” YouTube’s head of marketing Danielle Tiedt told the AP. “You’ll see several of these coming from us, for sure, as we highlight really big areas that we think are amazing areas of strength for YouTube.” YouTube’s first-ever comedy week will kick-off with a live, all-star variety show from Los Angeles’ Culver Studios, and will feature stand-up, sketches and musical performances.

The U.S. ambassador to Australia, Jeffrey L. Bleich, is on a mission: to stop the illegal downloading of Game of Thrones. On Tuesday, Bleich urged watchers of the show to stop pirating HBO’s hit TV show in a Facebook message that coincided with the 17th annual U.N. World Book and Copyright Day. He urged viewers to stop, citing the illegal downloading of the show just “as epic and devious as the drama.” (MORE: 5 Ways HBO’s Game of Thrones Exhibit Disappoints Us) In his note, he wrote: The file-sharing news website TorrentFreak estimated that Game of Thrones was the most pirated TV series of 2012. One episode was illegally downloaded about 4,280,000 times through public BitTorrent trackers in 2012, which is about equal to the number of that episode’s broadcast viewers. In other words, about half of that episode’s viewers stole the program from HBO. But what exactly does Tyrion Lannister have to do with Australian policy? It turns out that Australian viewers are among the largest audience that downloads the show. HBO has remained (unofficially, at least) tolerant of the show’s rampant piracy, drawing comments from both cast and crew members alike. Michael Lombardo, HBO’s programming president, pointed out in December that it comes with the territory. “I probably shouldn’t be saying this, but it is a compliment of sorts,” Lombardo told Entertainment Weekly. “The demand is there. And it certainly didn’t negatively impact the DVD sales. [Piracy is] something that comes along with having a wildly successful show on a subscription network.” (MORE: Coming Soon: A Softer Approach to Online Piracy) Director David Petrarca has made similar comments regarding the show’s rampant piracy on a visit to Sydney, according to the Washington Post. “[Downloads] generate buzz … that’s how they survive.”

Pain & Gain Tagline: Their American Dream Is Bigger Than Yours Most filmmakers, you’d imagine, would consider a budget in the ballpark of $26 million a pretty decent amount of money when it comes to making a movie. But Michael Bay is not most film makers. And the latest addition to the 48-year-old’s oeuvre is a far cry from the reported $200 million his last Transformers flick cost. But as Bay explained to the New York Times recently, when it came to Pain & Gain, “I wanted to do something small, just actors acting. It was almost like film school again for me.” Shot in 42 days, this “small” action comedy stars Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson and Anthony Mackie and is based on the true story of some personal trainers who got caught up with some crooks in 1990s Miami. Unfortunately for Bay, critics are seeing more pain than gain. “A ham-fisted, thick-skulled comic caper about bodybuilders-turned-criminals which, like its three protagonists, fully lives down to its own potential,” slams the Hollywood Reporter. “Bay can be a master of exuberant chaos, but here the violence mostly lands with a sickening thud, which is fitting, one supposes, but also ultimately numbing,” points out Variety. But Movie Nation offers a mildly positive review, in so much that the movie gets 2 and a half stars out of four. Yet the final words of the review aren’t exactly a ringing endorsement: “For a movie as physically fit as this one wants to be, Pain & Gain is carrying way too much extra weight.” MORE: TIME’s Richard Corliss on Pain & Gain

Oblivion In Oblivion, directed by Joseph Kosinski (TRON: Legacy), Tom Cruise plays an ex-Marine commander called Jack Harper in the year 2077. We know what you might be thinking: doesn’t that sound like Jack Reacher, the character he played in the adaptation of Lee Child’s series of novels? Perhaps he likes the name. Jack’s been hitting the road as part of an operation to extract resources from the Earth after many years of war with an alien enemy. No matter, he’s now only weeks away from joining his fellow humans who have been evacuated to a lunar colony. Until, that is, Jack rescues a beguiling stranger (Olga Kurylenko) from a downed spacecraft who will somehow make him question everything. What’s next for Jack? Only deciding the fate of humanity, which he previously thought was about to be lost forever. The critics who got lost in Oblivion didn’t, for the most part, emerge singing the movie’s praises. Noting its many influences, the Financial Times reports that it “starts as a kind of Silent Running or Omega Man (bliss) but collapses into a noisy Matrix-y Independence Day.” The Daily Telegraph arguably takes an even harsher approach: “The trouble with Oblivion is that it never gets past second gear, and most of the ideas feel cloned.” But the Irish Times can accentuate the positives, pointing out that, “As futurology it stinks. But as anaesthetised fantasy it works very nicely.” What’s more, “It even manages to justify the perennial blandness of the apparently unaging Tom Cruise. That requires some class of genius.” VIDEO: Watch Tom Cruise Do That Thing Where He Runs All Over the Place
