Wish you could do more with less during that frenetic morning scramble? Step right up, because stuff just got real with this Colgate-Palmolive patent for a toothbrush that releases sweet, sweet caffeine directly into your mouth. (MORE: Venezuela’s Toilet Paper Crisis) Imagine a toothbrush capable of dispensing a little something extra while you polish your choppers, drizzling the equivalent of a double-espresso with your toothpaste — or, you know, a numbing drug like benzocaine to soothe sore gums or a pesky cough. In fact C-P’s patent (noticed by Yahoo News) mentions all sorts of topical and consumable fun, from bursts of fruit-flavor (orange, strawberry, berry, grape, apple, mint, lemon, lime!) to herbal or nutritional supplements (aloe vera’s mentioned, as are lavender and chamomile) to somewhat weirder-sounding “communicative elements” like hot, cold or “tingle”-inducing materials. No, we’re not entirely sure what they’re getting at here, either. “The present invention pertains to an oral care implement generally, and more particularly to a toothbrush that releases a chemical into the mouth during use,” writes C-P in the patent summary, adding that its avant-garde oral care solution could contain “releasable sensory material that invokes a sensory response when in contact with tissues or surfaces of a mouth of a user.” To be fair, C-P’s patent isn’t the first we’ve heard of dental hygienics mixing it up with stimulants: a search for “caffeine toothpaste” turns up something called Buzz Toothpaste, “a peppermint-flavored, caffeinated toothpaste that packs the same punch as a cup of Starbucks coffee or a can of Mountain Dew.” Dig a little deeper and you’ll even find stuff like whiskey-flavored toothpaste (circa 1961, no less).
It was probably the world’s least threatening gang dispute. Police were called to a science fiction convention in Norwich, England, after a row between Star Wars and Doctor Who fans threatened to turn to the dark side. The quarrel started when two Norwich Sci-Fi Club members tried to get autographs from Doctor Who stars at the fourth Norwich Sci-Fi and Film Convention on Sunday. The event, held at the University of East Anglia, was organized by the rival Norwich Star Wars Club. An intergalactic turf war ensued. (WATCH: LEGO Version of the Star Trek Into Darkness Trailer) Tempers apparently became frayed when Jim Poole, treasurer of Norwich Sci-Fi Club, and a companion tried to get autographs from Doctor Who actors Graham Cole and Jeremy Bullock for a charity auction. Some Norwich Star Wars Club members spied his Norwich Sci-Fi Club sweater and took umbrage. Insults were thrown and the cops summoned. “I was put in a police car. We were both interviewed by the police and told to stay away from each other,” Poole told the BBC, adding that there was a history of animosity between the factions. (PHOTOS: Happy Star Wars Day: Revisiting a Galaxy Very Very Close) A spokesman for Norfolk Police confirmed that officers swooped in to maintain order after receiving reports that a man was being assaulted at the event. “After a lengthy investigation, talking to witnesses and reviewing good CCTV footage, it was confirmed that there was no assault,” read a statement. Dominic Warner, secretary of Norwich Star Wars Club, moved to quell tensions, but admitted that members of both groups had come into conflict in the past. “It does sound comical,” he admitted. “People that dress up in costume are labeled geeks and some people laugh at us, and this just makes it even more so.” Richard Walker, who ran the event, told the International Business Times that it took around six months to organize and had been well received. “We will be back next year with an even bigger and better fair,” he added.
Somewhere in closets deep within New York University’s Stern School of Business, there are at least 200 colorful pig sculptures—everything from gravy boats to ashtrays to beer steins. But where did they come from? Turns out: nobody knows—or so reports the New York Times. For years, students and educators alike have been stumbling across the pig-shaped baubles, making them something of a campus legend. Joe Diaz, a facilities manager, was the first to find them in 2005, while examining a crawl space under the Stern auditorium. “It went on like an archaeological dig,” he told the Times. “The boxes containing the pigs were not all together and they kept appearing.” (MORE: Three Months After Sandy: Inside the Rebuilding of New York University’s Research Labs) After that, they were moved from one storage space to another, sometimes narrowly escaping the trash bin. (As one school official put it, “There were a lot of people who coveted the pig closet.”) Paul Affuso, an associate dean who has worked at NYU since 1973, says he was told the pigs were “left as a gift to the undergraduate college, and that this woman had collected them all her life, just as a hobby,” per the Times. “I think she was an alum. I assume she passed away.” But even he can’t say for sure. (MORE: NYU’s Brilliant Design Solution to A Building’s Suicide Problem) The pig-urines are currently packed in crates, scattered in storage places throughout the school. At some point, they may get consolidated or even displayed. But for now, as Barbara Albrecht, who heads the Stern facilities, told the Times, “They are safe and secure as they are.”

Davie Bowie’s explicit, star-studded video for the song “The Next Day” off his recent album of the same name has prompted the Catholic League to weigh in with a provocative post describing the veteran rocker as a “switch-hitting, bisexual, senior citizen from London.” (MORE: Behold: New York’s Glorious New Skyline, 4,259 Days in the Making) In the post, titled “Bowie’s ‘Jesus’ Video Is A Mess,” Catholic League commenter Bill Donohue lays into Bowie for the new video, in which Bowie plays, in Donohue’s words, “a Jesus-like character who hangs out in a nightclub dump frequented by priests, cardinals and half-naked women.” “David Bowie is back, but hopefully not for long,” quips Donohue, describing the video as “strewn with characteristic excess”: …one priest bashes a homeless man, while others are busy hitting on women; self-flagellation is depicted; a dancing gal with bleeding hands makes a stigmata statement; and a customer is served eyeballs on a plate. The lyrics refer to the “priest stiff in hate” and “women dressed as men for the pleasure of that priest.” The song concludes with, “They can work with Satan while they dress with the saints.” In short, the video reflects the artist—it is a mess. The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, a sort of Roman Catholic lobbyist group that claims it “defends the right of Catholics – lay and clergy alike – to participate in American public life without defamation or discrimination,” was founded in 1973 as a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization; Donohue has served as president for two decades. In a 1999 New York Times article, the paper referred to Donohue as conducting “scathing attacks on the blasphemous and the irreverent in movies, magazines and art exhibitions,” suggesting that he “fans … simmering anger with inflammatory news releases” and that he criticizes “everything from Miramax movies to tasteless jokes about nuns.” (TIME’s own Tim Padgett, also Catholic, describes Donohue as “dyspeptic.”) That might explain why Donohue is targeting Bowie here: Calling the singer “confused about religion,” Donohue goes on to mock Bowie’s comments on atheism (“I’m

What’s the secret to an extra-long life? For one centenarian, it just might be bacon. A 105-year-old Texas woman, who became a widow at age 38 and worked as everything from a cotton picker to a hay baler while raising 7 kids on her own, says bacon is the secret to her longevity, the Huffington Post reports. “I love bacon. I eat it everyday,” Pearl Cantrell told NBC affiliate KRBC when asked her secret to living so long. “I don’t feel as old as I am. That’s all I can say,” Cantrell added. The great-great-grandmother, who lives in central Texas and still dances – some of her favorites include country dancing, waltzing and two-stepping – celebrated her 105th birthday recently with a three-day event that included more than 200 guests. Although Cantrell retired decades ago, she kept mowing her own lawn until the age of 100, according to the West Texas Tribune – a heart-healthy habit that probably helped keep her going as well. (MORE: Why Won’t Bacon Go Away?) When Oscar Mayer found out about Cantrell’s love of cured pork, they sent one of its Wienermobiles to her home with a special bacon delivery. The bacon-lover rode “shot-bun” in the Wienermobile through her hometown of Richland Springs, Texas, ABC 7 News reported. Despite its popularity, or perhaps because of it, bacon’s gotten a bad rap lately. A University of Zurich study published by the journal BMC Medicine in March found that processed meat was linked to a premature death. The study, which analyzed the diets of more than 440,000 people between the ages of 35 and 69, found that eating processed meats in moderation–less than 20g per day–could prevent an estimated 3% of premature deaths each year. As The Atlantic pointed out, however, that’s equivalent to a matchbook-sized portion. An earlier study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine last March found that even a single serving of processed red meat (yes, that includes bacon) increased the risk of participants dying by 20%. That study tracked over 121,000 doctors and

Now if only this could happen everyday. A Southern Californian mother of four accidentally dropped an extra dollar in the machine when she decided to buy a lotto ticket—and it turns out that was a good thing. Instead of flushing a dollar down the drain, Thuan Le won $14 million by sheer mistake at a Mission Viejo, Calif. CVS. Typically, she spends about $5 on Lotto tickets. This time she dropped in an extra dollar by accident when she went for her regular routine. (MORE: Arkansas Couple Wins Lottery Twice in One Day) According to NBC, Le decided to take her chances. Turns out, that extra SuperLotto Plus ticket was the winning ticket. She checked the ticket with a friend, and once she realized what had happened, she ran screaming in joy from the store and called her sons. She then drove straight to the California Lottery’s Santa Ana office near her home to claim the prize. “We thought she was joking,” her son told Lotto officials, “but we thought would she really joke like this? My older brother said, ‘yes, she would.’” (MORE: Chicago Lottery Winner Poisoned to Death After $1 Million Win) Though Le has been unavailable for comment, lottery officials have stated that Le plans to use the windfall to travel, buy a house and visit her parents in Vietnam.

Swing by eBay, type in the words “Metro Meteor,” and you’ll turn up dozens of listings with color-swirled thumbnails and prices in the “completed” view ranging from a couple hundred bucks to thousands of dollars. Those are bona fide paintings you’re looking at, and the painter — one Metro Meteor — is a horse. (MORE: Cannibalism at Jamestown: Listening to the Bones) No, not a painter dressed to resemble a horse, or someone helping guide a horse to conjure abstract images, but an actual paintbrush-in-its-mouth, solo-swishing-on-canvas thoroughbred bay living in rural Maryland. Ten-year-old Metro Meteor retired from racing several years ago due to bad knees and was adopted by local artist Ron (and wife Wendy) Krajewski. But instead of riding the horse, Krajewski, a local artist, decide to teach it to paint. According to Reuters, he came up with the idea based on the notion that elephants paint with their trunks (they’re known to produce brush strokes on canvas, that is, but whether there’s actual creativity involved isn’t settled science). The results of Krajewski’s tutelage? You’re looking at one of them in the shot above, a smeary, abstract painting (with specks of sawdust — they all have this, apparently), one in a series of similarly abstract “works” that have brought roughly $20,000 to the Krajewski’s coffers in just four months. And that’s just the start: the waiting list to snatch one of the horse’s “large” paintings has upwards of 100 queued. Do the Krajewskis think their horse is actually creating art? “Lets face reality. Art scholars are not going to have long lengthy discussions trying to decipher the hidden meaning to Metro’s paintings. He is a horse,” they writes on Metro Meteor’s official website. ”It is what it is. A painting you can hang on your wall and tell all your friends it was painted by a horse.” Then again, the website notes that 50% of the proceeds from Metro Meteor’s painting sales goes to help other retired racehorses find homes, which seems noble enough.
Turns out finders aren’t always keepers. New Hampshire man Ruben Pavon simply thought that all of the merchandise on the porch of the ‘Finders Keepers’ thrift shop was free. But the Derry resident was accused of stealing when surveillance footage showed him taking a grill, the ABC-affiliate WMUR reports. Pavon told WMUR he believed his actions were justified based on the store’s name: “I thought it was there for the taking. The sign did say ‘Finders Keepers.’ So I took that DVD player, took it home. A couple of weeks later, the stuff is still there on the porch, so I’m thinking to myself, ‘Finders Keepers. They probably just put stuff out there for people to take.” (MORE: Greek Man Accused of ‘Surreal’ Attempt to Steal Dalí Painting) Finders Keepers owner, Laura Baker, told WMUR that all businesses charge for their products: “I don’t know of any stores where there’s free stuff. It would be nice if there were. I’d be there on a regular basis myself.” The shop’s website says that a portion of its items “are donations, in which the proceeds of those items go to help purchasing ‘needs’ of local community organizations specifically to help children in need,” Yahoo! News reported. Video surveillance shows a child helping him carry merchandise to his car. Pavon told TV network, “I just want to clear my name and say I’m not a bad dad. I’m the best dad in the world.” He did return all the items he took from the store, and local police are continuing to investigate. WMUR reported that it hasn’t been determined whether criminal charges will be filed.
A show of hands if you think Ian McKellen as Gandalf in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings films was miscast. No one? Well then, here’s precisely the audition video for you: country-rocker Willie Nelson — who, incidentally, just turned 80 today, Apr. 30 – making a “smokin’” pitch for the franchise’s famous wizardly role. (WATCH: Rare Photos for Willie Nelson’s 80th) It seems Nelson pulled it together while visiting TBS’s Conan, donning cape, pointy hat and clutching an angel-topped staff, then doing his level best to clinch iconic lines from the books like “You shall not pass…an unlit joint, man — that’s just not cool” and “That giant flaming eye is just freakin’ me the f*** out” and “Balrogs are a**holes.” He even takes the time to croon that old Middle-earth standard, “Mama, Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Orcs.” And hey look, isn’t that Micah Nelson dueting with Nelson as Bilbo? Watch out Martin Freeman — can you sing and play guitar like that? Nelson adds that he’d “also be a great Magneto,” you know, in case Bryan Singer’s watching. Actor Ian “Gandalf” McKellen’s response to being (potentially) upstaged by the famous singer?
As they say, there’s no such thing as bad publicity, which may explain the thinking behind Hyundai’s hopelessly crass “viral suicide ad,” in which a man tries — then fails — to kill himself with exhaust fumes while sitting in one of Hyundai’s new vehicles. Hyundai has since pulled the ad and issued a statement, saying it “deeply and sincerely apologizes for the offensive viral film.” (MORE: Samurai Sword-Wielding Mormon Bishop Saves Neighbor) In the minute-long ad, a pensive-looking middle-aged man starts a car in his garage, sits back in the car seat, takes several deep breaths, then closes his eyes as fumes fill the area. Cut to nighttime, and suddenly the garage lights come on, the garage door comes up and the man walks out, apparently fine as Hyundai’s tagline pops up boasting about its new vehicle’s “100% water emissions.” Needless to say, viewers aren’t amused. Noticed by the BBC, London-based blogger Holly Brockwell wrote a powerful letter to Hyundai and Innocean (the advertising agency responsible for the spot) describing her own father’s suicide (in a car) and admonishing the companies for using this sort of morbid spectacle to hype technology. As an advertising creative, I would like to congratulate you on achieving the visceral reaction we all hope for. On prompting me to share it on my Twitter page and my blog. I would not like to congratulate you on making me cry for my dad … When your ad started to play, and I saw the beautifully-shot scenes of taped-up car windows with exhaust feeding in, I began to shake. I shook so hard that I had to put down my drink before I spilt it. And then I started to cry. In its apology, Hyundai claims the video was created by Innocean Europe “without Hyundai’s request or approval,” and notes that it “runs counter to our values as a company and as members of the community,” further apologizing “to those who have been personally impacted by tragedy.” MORE: The 20 ‘Most Well-Read Cities’ in America, According to Amazon.com

A sidewalk has exploded on a London street – and it’s not the first time it’s happened. Footage captured by a witness in a nearby building shows a man looking at a mysterious hole in a sidewalk in the central London neighborhood of Pimlico. Witnesses then report hearing three bangs, the second of which was accompanied by flames shooting out of the hole – sending the curious bystander running for his life. “We heard this huge bang and there was black smoke everywhere,” a man who works across the street told the London Evening Standard. “Then came the second, which was like a volcano erupting from underneath the pavement, the flame was about ten feet high, it was very scary.” (MORE: After the Texas Explosion: A Firestorm of Lawsuits?) The blast, which is being investigated by the U.K.’s Health and Safety Executive, is thought to have been caused by a faulty 11,000-volt underground electricity cable, reports the Standard. Worryingly for residents, exploding sidewalks appear to be a new London trend: a string of similar cases have been reported over the last two years. In August 2011, an elderly man was reportedly confined to a wheelchair for nearly three months after an explosion blew out a manhole cover he was standing on while talking to friends, according to the Standard. He reportedly claimed negligence on the part of U.K. Power Networks, which owns and maintains the capital’s electrical grid, but the company apparently refused to speculate on what caused the explosion.
What’s the wildest thing you’ve encountered in a public bathroom? Broken toilet? Spent cherry bomb? A person who was obviously confused by the gender symbols on the bathroom door? Tiger? (MORE: Czech Republic Forced to Remind the Internet that Chechnya Is a Different Country After Boston Bombing) Wait, tiger? Yes, tiger, as Jenna Krehbiel of Salina, Kan. discovered upon visiting the ladies room at the Isis Shrine Circus this weekend. Krehbiel had just finished watching the circus’ big cat show and stepped away to use the facilities at the Salina Bicentennial Centennial Center when she came face to face with a massive feline. “I went in to use the bathroom, and a lady came in to get her daughter out and said there was a tiger loose,” Krehbiel, who was a first-time visitor to the circus, told the Salina Journal. “I didn’t know it was in the bathroom, and I walked in the (open) door, which closed right after I had walked in. I saw the tiger; it was at most two feet in front of me, and I turned around calmly and walked back toward the door.” The tiger had escaped at some point during the show, according to Center officials, prompting staffers to lock down the area, but the roughly 25-foot-long bathroom apparently had more than one entrance — Krehbiel came in from the other side, putting her “the closest [she'd] ever been to a tiger not in a cage.” She told the Journal that while the tiger wasn’t the biggest in the show, she estimated it was at least 250 pounds. Why then didn’t she panic and flee abruptly? Because of her training as a social worker, she told the Journal, which keeps her “always on alert.” And her three-year-old daughter’s reaction after Krehbiel relayed what happened? Hygiene first: ”[She] wanted to know if it had washed its hands,” said Krehbiel. “That was her only concern.” MORE: Nike Pulls ‘Boston Massacre’ T-Shirts from Shelves

Tens of thousands of Dutch people have threatened to leave the country in protest over a pop song written for the inauguration of Holland’s new king. After Queen Beatrix announced her abdication in January, Crown Prince Willem Alexander is set to become the country’s first king in more than a century when he replaces his mother as Holland’s monarch on April 30. Ahead of the occasion, an inauguration committee asked the public to contribute lyrics for a new anthem, written by British-born songwriter John Ewbank, to be performed at the event, reports the Daily Telegraph. (MORE: How the Business of Streaming Music WIll Change Culture… For the Better) The result, called “The King’s Song” (or “Koningslied”) features an unusual mix of musical styles, including traditional Dutch music and rap. The project involved a total of 51 Dutch artists, who can be seen in the song’s promo video flashing the three-fingered “W” (for Willem) sign, and singing ”I build a dyke with my bare hands and keep the water away” and “through wind and rain I’ll stand beside you… I’ll keep you safe as long as I live.” (MORE: Survival-of-the-Catchiest: How Music “Evolves”) Ewbank has written and produced a string of Dutch top 40 hit singles, and “The King’s Song” seemed at first to be no exception, going straight to the top of the Netherlands’ iTunes chart when it was released on Friday. But many Dutch were less than enthused, and by the following day, an online petition entitled “No to the King’s Song” had collected nearly 40,000 signatures from people who vowed to abdicate as Dutch subjects unless the “imbecilic” track was withdrawn from the inauguration ceremony. One unimpressed signatory said the song sounded like “North Korean propaganda,” while another wrote that the track “spontaneously turns you into a Republican, if you weren’t one already,” reports the BBC. Later on Saturday, Ewbank admitted defeat, and said he was withdrawing the song from the ceremony, reports the Guardian. “After having to block yet another insult on my Twitter account, I am now totally done,” he tweeted,

What’s the stupidest thing you’d do to score hits on YouTube? Swallow a heaping spoonful of dry cinnamon? It’s surely up there, as the YouTube topic “cinnamon challenge” illustrates: a catalogue of people’s farcical, mostly unsuccessful attempts to swallow a tablespoon worth of one of the world’s most popular aromatic spices, harvested from the bark of a Southeast Asian tree. Except it’s not like swallowing a spoonful of sugar — quite the opposite, in fact. (MORE: ‘Cinnamon Challenge’ Could Cause Lasting Lung Damage) As NPR notes, those who take the challenge — attempting to down the mouthful of cinnamon in less than 60 seconds without a liquid chaser — generally fail, sputtering, hacking and at some point expelling clouds of brown particles that hang in the air for seconds as they cough and wheeze, their eyes watering. People tend to inadvertently inhale the cinnamon, too, which can lead to pneumonia or cause actual lung damage; as NPR notes, one southeast Michigan teen suffered a collapsed lung after taking the challenge. Yet competitive attempts to down the spice and score social networking kudos continue, prompting the American Association of Poison Control Centers to weigh in: The organization notes that in 2012, over 200 calls were placed to poison centers “concerning intentional misuse or abuse of cinnamon by teens ages 13 to 19.” From January through March 2013, the number of reported exposures stands at 20, says AAPCC. (MORE: Paralyzed British Man Fights for the Right to Die) While most of us enjoy cinnamon in various dishes and holiday confectionaries, taken under these conditions, it can work like a poison, leading to serious health issues. As the AAPCC notes, it can even be life-threatening — especially for those with preexisting respiratory conditions like asthma. While not as toxic as spices like nutmeg ingested at high doses, cinnamon contains a chemical compound known as coumarin, which can affect the liver, prompting European health officials to caution against consuming cinnamon at high levels. So in case the examples of Arya Stark and a bunch of idiots on the

Sure, some mothers might want a memento of their breastfeeding about as much as they’d like to re-experience labor contractions. But for many, it’s an unforgettable experience that brings them closer to their newborns, and for those women a 34-year-old mother of three has figured out a way to “materialize” that memory. Allicia Mogavero, of southern Rhode Island, makes breast-milk jewelry that she sells at the online store Mommy Milk Creations, on the craft site Etsy.com. For $64 to $125, she’ll plasticize a sample of your breast milk and mold it into miniature shapes — hearts, moons, flowers or tiny hands. The milk beads are then set into a pendant of the your choice. The final product is a keepsake of your body’s liquid gold that you can wear “as a badge of honor” or perhaps give to your children when they are old enough to not be totally skeeved out by it. (More: Breastfeeding’s Role in Controlling Obesity Is Weakened) According to the Daily Mail, Mogavero can barely keep up with the orders. Mothers around the world are sending her their breast milk in sealed bags; her waiting list for final products is now eight to 10 weeks long. Mogavero has quite a lot of competitors on Etsy.com. One of them, Hollyday Designs, claims that it’s the original creator of breast-milk penchants and that it’s been making the unique keepsake for more than a decade. Another seller, milkmombaby, offers kits that allow moms to preserve their own breastmilk for $22 to $38. And there are other ways to save your bodily ambrosia. According to Yahoo Shine, Sara James of Houston handcrafts soap bars made of olive, coconut, lavender and a dose of breast milk. She sells them for up to $60 on Etsy’s TinRoofSoapCo Shop. And in 2011, a New York University grad student used human breast milk to make cheese and offered adventurous eaters samples at a New York gallery, noted Reuters. Earlier that year, a London store calledThe Icecreamists began selling ice-cream made from human breast milk. According to the

A team of Japanese engineering students has invented a ‘fulfillment coat’ that may be perfect for those lonely souls in search of girlfriends — like, for example, Japanese engineering students. The team at the University of Tsukuba have developed what they call the Riajyuu coat, which hugs you just like a girlfriend does. According to Rocketnews 24, two robotic pincers controlled by a motor at the back of the garment simulate a girl’s cuddle from behind when you put the coat on. As you feel the squeeze, the headphone that comes with the coat whispers pre-recorded words such as “I am sorry, were you waiting?” and “ Watch your back!” into your ears. (MORE: What’s Behind Japan’s Love Affair with Robots?) According to the gaming blog Kotaku, Riajyuu means someone “who is pleased with their life outside the Internet.” And this is not the first time Japan has tried to help single men feel happier in the real world. In 2010, a former honeymoon hotspot in Atami invited singles who play the Japanese dating-simulating game Love Plus+ to bring their virtual girlfriends to the town. Single males could check into hotels with their “dates” and enjoy a special meal with the virtual guests in restaurants.
In January we asked “Is this LEGO Star Wars toy racist?” in reference to LEGO’s blocky rendition of Jabba the Hutt’s desert palace, as depicted at the beginning of the film Return of the Jedi. (WATCH: Stephen Colbert Grills Peter Jackson about Next ‘Hobbit’ Movie) The Turkish Cultural Community of Austria recently caused a stir by claiming the toy’s design was racially motivated, arguing that it was based on the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul and the Jami’ al-Kabir mosque in Beirut. Also: that the figures found in the set exemplify “racial prejudice and vulgar insinuations against … Orientals and Asians as sneaky and criminal personalities (slaveholders, leaders of criminal organizations, terrorists, criminals, murderers, human sacrifice)…” It seems the toy’s demise is now at hand: LEGO says it plans to retire Jabba’s Palace, leading some to conclude the company’s caving to backlash. Not so, says LEGO in an Apr. 2 statement: A few media have reported that the product is being discontinued due to the mentioned criticism. This is, however, not correct … As a normal process products in the LEGO Star Wars assortment usually have a life-cycle of one to three years after which they leave the assortment and may be renewed after some years. The LEGO Star Wars product Jabba’s Palace 9516 was planned from the beginning to be in the assortment only until the end of 2013 as new exciting models from the Star Wars universe will follow. Still, the TCCA seems to be greeting the move with celebratory rhetoric: “We are very grateful and congratulate Lego on the decision to take Jabba’s Palace out of production,” said TCCA president Birol Killic (via RT). Despite LEGO’s denial that the toy’s removal is backlash-related, it devotes most of its statement to defending the toy as creatively anodyne, noting that it “regrets that the product has caused the members of the Turkish cultural community to interpret [the toy] wrongly, but … the design of the product only refers to the fictional content of the Star Wars saga.” MORE: Signed Beatles’ Sgt.
Who moved the cheese? Now we know: a guy from Illinois, according to police, who they say made off with some $200,000 worth of Wisconsin Muenster. (WATCH: Finally, Video Games You Play by Peeing) Police picked up Veniamin Balika, 34, of Plainfield, Ill. in New Jersey after detectives determined the truck he was driving — an 18-wheeler — harbored 42,000 pounds of stolen cheese. They say he’d been preparing to sell the cheese on the cheap to East Coast retailers. Balika allegedly used false paperwork to trick a distributor in Cashton, Wis. into loading his truck with the massive cheese shipment, originally intended for a Texas destination. He was arrested at the Vince Lombardi Service Area off the New Jersey State Turnpike “This is the first time this has ever happened to us,” said Kevin Everhart, general manager of K&K / Old Country Cheese Factory (via Channel 3000). ”The trucking company we contract with will take care of the money we lost, but it’s still a shame. Still sad that this happened.” The tragedy? Since the cheese might have been tampered with, K&K elected not to ask for it back. Well, a tragedy for K&K anyway — Channel 3000 reports that New Jersey health authorities will inspect the stolen food and, assuming it’s deemed safe for consumption, donate all 42,000 pounds to charity.
Imagine Jaws through the eyes of director Guillermo del Toro, and maybe you get something like this: a two-headed shark that’d be right at home in something like “Pan’s Labyrinth 2: The Ocean Blue.” (MORE: Seven Hang-Ups in the Language of Gay Rights) According to the Journal of Fish Biology, where research on the incredibly rare find was published, it’s in fact the only recorded instance of dicephalia — the scientific term for a fetus with two heads — in a bull shark. The shark was discovered inadvertently by a fisherman working in the Gulf of Mexico who caught an adult bull shark on April 7, 2011, then extracted the two-headed fetus after opening the uterus. The shark died shortly after being removed — experts say it stood little chance of surviving had it been born naturally. Michigan State University — which led the study alongside Florida Keys Community College that eventually confirmed the shark was in fact a single organism and not a set of conjoined twins — noted the reason for its rarity is that creatures born with this sort of abnormality tend to die shortly after birth. “You’ll see many more cases of two-headed lizards and snakes,” said MSU assistant professor of fisheries and wildlife, Michael Wagner. “That’s because those organisms are often bred in captivity, and the breeders are more likely to observe the anomalies.” In this case, those anomalies included the axial skeleton and internal organs dividing into parallel systems, including “two well-developed” heads. Yes, you’re forgiven for shuddering at the phrase “two well-developed heads.” What caused the mutation? It’s all guesswork at this point, but don’t assume it had something to do with the 2010 BP oil drilling catastrophe. According to Wagner, “Given the timing of the shark’s discovery with the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, I could see how some people may want to jump to conclusions … Making that leap is unwarranted. We simply have no evidence to support that cause or any other.” WATCH: The Backstreet Boys Do the ‘Harlem Shake’
