Were you the type of college student who preferred to hide in your dorm room blasting Metallica instead of studying? Did you skip class to travel to a Black Sabbath show? Or sleep through mathematics after a late night of headbanging? For some students at a UK college, watching and listening to heavy metal will be studying, because the university has just launched a degree in heavy metal music. England’s New College Nottingham has introduced what is believed to be a first of its kind Heavy Metal Music Performance degree. Students enrolled in the degree program will study the history of heavy metal, including censorship throughout the occasionally-controversial genre’s history, as well as heavy-metal genealogy, the relationship of metal to religion and philosophy, studying bands in concert, composing metal tunes, learning the ropes of the business and more, all in the interest of preparing students for a career in the music industry. (MORE: Catching Up With Cheap Trick’s Rick Nielsen, 35 Years After At Budokan) Liam Maloy, who put the course together, told the BBC, “In the past, heavy metal has not been taken seriously and is seen as lacking academic credibility when compared with other genres such as jazz and classical music. But that’s just a cultural construction.” Maloy noted that the studies at Nottingham will be academically rigorous with required papers and presentations. The two-year degree program, which will start in September, will include songwriting, finance management and onstage performances, although there is no word on whether that involves pyrotechnics or hair styling. “You can study music at Oxford, Cambridge and in all cities all over the UK, but here in Nottingham we wanted to offer something special that reflects our city’s culture and employment opportunities,” Maloy told The Telegraph. “Heavy metal is an extremely technical genre of music and the study of its culture and context is a rising academic theme, so we’re very excited to be at the forefront of its integration with education.” Students who complete their two-year study of heavy metal can opt to

State and local funding for public universities fell by 7% last year, but that didn’t prevent some college presidents from getting raises. In 2011–12, the median total compensation for chief executives at public colleges was $441,392 — a 4.7% increase from the 2010–11 school year, according to The Chronicle of Higher Education’s annual report on executive pay. (MORE: Former Penn State President Says He Was Abuse Victim in Letter) At the top of the list is Graham Spanier, the former president of Pennsylvania State University, who was forced to resign in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky sex-abuse scandal. In 2011–12, Spanier brought in a total of $2.9 million, which included $1.2 million in severance pay. He was followed by Jay Gogue of Auburn University, who received $2,542,865, and Gordon Gee, president of Ohio State University, whose $1,899,420 compensation included a base salary of $830,439 — the most of any president. In 2007–08, Gee famously became the first college president who earned more than $1 million per year. Nothing to scoff at, though many of the presidents on the list don’t make as much as the football and men’s basketball coaches at their schools. The full report, available here, includes salary information on 212 presidents. Here are the top 10 earners, in terms of total compensation: 1. Graham B. Spanier*, Pennsylvania State University (Pennsylvania), $2,906,271 2. Jay Gogue, Auburn University (Alabama), $2,542,865 3. E. Gordon Gee, Ohio State University main campus (Ohio), $1,899,420 4.
A video of a Dallas-area student lecturing his social studies teacher on how to do a better job has gone viral, renewing debate about problems in the nation’s educational system. The student, Jeff Bliss, an 18-year-old sophomore at Duncanville High School, is shown giving an unauthorized monologue on the topic that lasts for more than a minute before he walks out of the classroom. (MORE: The Teacher as Hero: Mourning Victoria Soto) “If you would just get up and teach them instead of handing them a frickin’ packet, yo. There’s kids in here that don’t learn like that. They need to learn face-to-face,” he begins. “You want a kid to change and start doing better? You gotta touch his frickin’ heart. You can’t expect the kid to change if all you do is just tell ’em. You gotta take this job serious. This is the future of this nation,” Bliss adds, as he walks toward the door. According to the Dallas Morning News, the teacher, Julie Phung, had assigned the class homework that was due in two days. Phung had reportedly given her other classes three days to complete the assignment. In the video, which was recorded on Monday, she repeatedly asks Bliss to leave the room, saying, “Get out,” “Will you please leave?” and “Can you get outside, please?” The video, which was filmed by a fellow classmate using a cellphone, had racked up over 1.8 million views on YouTube by Friday afternoon. (LIST: Top 10 Bad Teachers) The Duncanville Independent School District has placed the teacher on paid administrative leave while it investigates the incident, but has taken no action against Bliss. “He makes a number of valid statements about how classrooms across America need to change, and we view this as an opportunity to have more conversations about transforming our schools to better meet the needs of our students,” a district spokesperson told Mashable. Bliss’ mom says she’s proud of her son. She told the Dallas paper that his actions call to mind the famous quote from the philosopher

It’s hard to master math when you’re too tired to keep your eyes open in class. While nutrition and family income have previously been associated with academic performance, now quantity of sleep has also been shown to play a role, according to a Boston College analysis reported on by the BBC. The study, which draws on data culled from tests taken by more than 900,000 students in 50 countries, found that the U.S. has the greatest proportion of students whose academic performance, particularly in math and science, suffers due to poor sleep, with 73% of 9 and 10-year-olds and 80% of 13 and 14-year-olds affected. Those rates are significantly higher than the international average of 47% and 57%, respectively. The top 5 countries where poor sleep hampers learning are: United States New Zealand Saudi Arabia Kuwait Australia The study found variations within countries too. For example, in the U.S., middle school students in Colorado are more sleep deprived than their cohorts in Massachusetts. Countries where sleep has the least impact on learning are: Kazakhstan Azerbaijan Slovakia Japan Malta (MORE: Why Are We Depriving Our Teens of Sleep?) The findings were part of a 2011 study that gauged education benchmarks around the world. In order to assess how sleep and nutrition affected these results, Boston College researchers sent questionnaires to teachers, students and parents about students’ sleep habits. Those responses were then compared with test performance. The results of the new comparison have not been published in a peer-reviewed journal. “Sleep is a fundamental need for all children,” Chad Minnich of the TIMSS and PIRLS International Study Center at Boston College told the BBC. “Our data show that across countries internationally, on average, children who have more sleep achieve higher in maths, science and reading,” Minnich added. The low level of Z’s in affluent countries like the U.S. and Saudi Arabia are attributed to students having cell phones and tablets at their finger tips — literally. The light from the screen, held close to the face, makes it harder to fall asleep. ”Having a computer

Pornography is often a clandestine activity – er, topic – discussed behind closed doors. But starting in 2014, it may become a lot more educational. Routledge – the global publisher of academic books, journals and online resources – will publish a full-fledged scholarly journal dedicated to pornography, the New York Times reports. Usually considered a taboo subject, pornography has made several widespread appearances on college campuses like Harvard and Yale, thanks to events like Sex Week, which has drawn condemnation for educational offerings that include workshops with sex-toy raffles and lectures by porn stars, according to the New York Times. (MORE: Study: Porn May Not Be Such a Bad Influence on Sexual Behavior) Porn Studies claims to be “the first dedicated, international, peer-reviewed journal to critically explore those cultural products and services designated as pornographic and their cultural, economic, historical, institutional, legal and social contexts,” with particular emphasis on “the intersection of sexuality, gender, race, class, age and ability.” The journal, edited by two British academics – Feona Attwood from Middlesex University, and Clarissa Smith from the University of Sunderland – has already gotten some scholarly endorsements, the New York Times reported. Julie Peakman, a historian at the University of London and the author of Mighty Lewd Books: The Development of Pornography in 18th-Century England, said in a statement: “We have waited a long time for an academic journal that treats the subject of the representation of human sexuality with the seriousness it deserves. I look forward to a lively and disciplined debate across different disciplines.” The Porn Studies editors are calling for submissions for its first issue commencing in Spring 2014. The guidelines include 5,000 to 8,000 words for articles, 500 to 1,500 words for forum submissions, and 800 to 1,500 words for book reviews.
A New York high school has apologized after students were assigned the task of “explaining why Jews are evil” as part of a persuasive writing class and the teacher responsible has been placed on leave, reports the Albany Times Union. TheTimes Union broke the story last Friday, reporting that sudents at Albany High School were asked to watch and read Nazi propaganda, and then pretend their English teacher was a fascist official whom they must convince of their loyalty. (WATCH: Adolf Hitler Might Not Be the Best Spokesman for Shampoo) Around 75 kids were told to they “must argue that Jews are evil, and use solid rationale from government propaganda to convince me of your loyalty to the Third Reich” in five paragraphs. Participants were urged to use information garnered from their history classes as well as “any experiences you have” to present a damning appraisal of the Jewish people. However, around one-third of the 10th graders involved refused to take part in the assignment, prompting a speedy respsonse from school staff. “I would apologize to our families,” Albany Superintendent Marguerite Vanden Wyngaard told a meeting called in response to the incident. “I don’t believe there was malice or intent to cause any insensitivities to our families of Jewish faith.” (MORE: Is ‘Accidental Racist’ Accidentally Racist? Brad Paisley and LL Cool J’s Track Makes Waves) The teacher responsible for the controversial class could face further disciplinary action including possible dismissal, reported the Times Union. Vanden Wyngaard did not say when or if the district would allow the teacher back in the classroom, but suggested it may not happen before the end of the year. And that’s just wrong.” Students were advised to incorporate elements of the teachings of Aristotle, the ancient

What do Project Runway’s Tim Gunn, Gossip Girl‘s Blair Waldorf and Kenilworth Junior High in Petaluma, Calif. have in common? They all hate leggings. Leggings — the skintight alternative to pants, loathed by fashionistas and school administrators alike — are the subject of a growing number of school bans. Schools in Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Nova Scotia, Canada have all prohibited their students from wearing form-fitting clothing. Kenilworth is the latest school to join the ban, reports ABC News. The school amended its dress code to ban leggings in the classroom, saying that it causes distraction amongst the school’s boys. The school held an assembly for their female students where administrators said that no tight pants – yoga pants, leggings and tight jeans would be allowed. That has since been amended to ban only leggings, unless worn with shorts or paired with a skirt or dress. “Leggings have become popular among girls and many are sheer,” Emily Dunnagan, principal of Kenilworth Junior High, told ABC. “When girls bend in leggings the threads spread and that’s really when it becomes a problem.” (MORE: Why Apparel Companies Compete To Outfit College Hoops Teams) While students at the school were upset about the new restrictions, many parents were concerned about the underlying message of the ban, as it puts the burden of preventing the ”distraction” of young men on the shoulders of young women. “It is not our girls’ fault that these boys have quote ‘raging hormones’ they can’t control,” said Lisa Simond, a parent, to local news station KTVU. ”Boys need to be taught to respect women no matter what they’re wearing, and that’s a big deal,” Jerelyn Kruljac, another local parent, told the broadcaster. “The concern is we don’t want undergarments showing,” Dunnagan told Patch. “Students need to wear clothing that’s appropriate for the school environment.” Schools are not the first to notice the problematic sheerness of leggings. Trendy athletic wear manufacturer Lululemon Athletica was forced to pull some of their pricey yoga leggings off of store shelves after discovering that a production glitch made the material almost see-through when used for its intended purpose.
This weekend, while some people sat down to an Easter dinner or a Passover dinner, others sat down to read a controversial Mar. 29 editorial, “Advice for the young women of Princeton: the daughters I never had,” published on the website of the Daily Princetonian, Princeton University‘s student newspaper. Susan A. Patton, a 1977 alum — and mother of two Princetonians, one of whom is a current junior — was inspired to pen the viewpoint after she and her best friend from college participated in a discussion following a lecture by Princeton University President Shirley Tilghman and Wilson School professor Anne-Marie Slaughter at a Women and Leadership conference on campus. As Patton wrote: “Forget about having it all, or not having it all, leaning in or leaning out…Here’s what nobody is telling you: Find a husband on campus before you graduate. Yes, I went there.” (WATCH: Video about TIME’s Sheryl Sandberg Cover Story) Patton, a human resources consultant and resident of Manhattan’s Upper East Side, is totally “serious”, she wrote in a follow-up on Huffington Post’s Women blog: “I sincerely feel that too much focus has been placed on encouraging young women only to achieve professionally…I wanted to encourage the wonderful young women on Princeton’s campus to take advantage of this while they can. From a sheer numbers perspective, the odds will never be as good again…I am divorced. I did not marry a Princeton man. I wish I had…Honestly, [the letter] was intended as little more than honest advice from a Jewish mother.” New York Magazine’s Maureen O’Connor first called Patton’s perspective ”embarrassing” and an “excruciatingly retro understanding of relationships”: “If men are happy with bimbos, but women aren’t happy with “men who aren’t at least their intellectual equal,” then the conclusion is that a successful heterosexual relationship requires the man to be smarter than the woman. This is the same logic used by teen girls who feign stupidity to attract dates for the homecoming dance.” O’Connor later interviewed Patton, the president of her 1977 class and recent divorcee. Her ex-husband “‘went to a school

Nothing will stop students at the University of Tennessee from getting some — not even the university itself, which decided it would not use state tax dollars to fund the first-ever “Sex Week” at its Knoxville campus next month, following a Republican lawmaker’s complaints. The university’s chancellor Jimmy G. Cheek recently announced he was pulling all of the funding for Sex Week that came from academic departments and programs — about $11,145 in tuition dollars and state taxes. (MORE: Steubenville and the Family Guy Generation) Sex Weeks are popular, annual events at college campuses nationwide, but despite what the name suggests, they’re far from bacchanalian bonanzas dedicated to the nude and lewd. They’re designed to be educational, offering classes and panels, open dialogue and free testing for sexually transmitted diseases. That said, Sex Weeks aren’t exactly bastions of chastity, either; some of the UT-Knoxville’s programming attracted accusations going below the belt in all the wrong ways, like the inclusion of a seminar titled “How many licks does it take?” and plans for a “golden condom scavenger hunt.” State Senator Stacey Campfield started the push to shut down Sex Week after reading a Fox News piece highlighting the inclusion of a $20,000 “lesbian bondage expert,” and university officials quickly responded after reviewing the event, which is organized by the student group SEAT (Sexual Empowerment at Tennessee) and set to take place Apr. 7-12. “The University’s three-part mission is to provide education, research and public service, and the state allocates this funding to help us fulfill the mission,” university system president Joe DiPietro said in a supporting statement. “Some activities planned as part of Sex Week are not an appropriate use of state tax dollars.” The student organizers aren’t entirely out of luck, as they still have $6,700 from student programming and fundraising, but that doesn’t mean they’re happy. In typical collegiate fashion, Sex Week supporters are taking to — what else? — social media and Twitter with the hashtag #IWantSexWeek to lodge their complaints — and redefine what it means to be “sexually frustrated.” But with private donations pouring in to cover the costs — including $1,000 from Planned Parenthood —

What do you do if you’re in a spelling bee, you spell a word correctly, and the judges claim you spelled it wrong anyway? “B-r-a-i-l-l-e” — that’s how 12-year-old Sierra Shoemaker of Indianola, Calif., spelled the word referring to the written language designed for those unable to see, formed by patterns of raised dots and read with your fingertips. The sixth-grader was competing in the Selma Unified School District’s spelling bee held at Garfield Elementary School last Friday, March 8. (MORE: Wisconsin Gouda named 2013 US Championship Cheese) But “B-r-a-i-l-e” is how the judges’ sheet and “word master” claimed it was spelled — inaccurately, of course — leading to Shoemaker’s startling disqualification. “I didn’t want to say anything because, you know, if the word master tells you you’ve got a word wrong, you don’t really argue with him,” said Shoemaker, speaking to KMPH. “So I was shocked … I looked around at the audience, half of them were like looking at each other, murmuring.” Shoemaker was doing well enough that even then, she took home the second place trophy, but realizing she could have won the competition outright and determined to go on to the Fresno County Spelling Bee, she pushed back. Although the county originally denied her appeal, fortunately the Selma School District dug in its heels on her behalf, culminating in an exception allowing the district to submit three names to the county-wide competition instead of the usual two. Shoemaker thus gets to represent her school district alongside two others at the upcoming county spelling competition on March 21. And if she wins Fresno? She’ll go on to represent the county in the California State Spelling Championships later this year.
March 14 (3/14) is Pi Day, a celebration of the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter — one of the most beautiful and confounding numbers in mathematics. It’s technically written as 3.14159, or 3.14 for short, but Pi is an “irrational and transcendental number” whose decimals “continue infinitely without repetition or pattern,” according to PiDay.org, the holiday’s official website. But just like the hordes of young people who flocked to get married on 12/12/12, we can’t resist the opportunity to celebrate a fortuitous coincidence on our calendars. Here’s our favorite quirky celebrations for Pi Day 2013. (MORE: Pi Day By The Numbers) In the past, MIT has posted its acceptance letters to high school seniors on Pi Day. Attention, Chicago residents: First Slice Pie Café will be giving out free slices of pizza today at 3:14 pm. For readers in the Southeast, pizzas cost $3.14 at Your Pie‘s 16 locations across Georgia, Tennessee and Florida. The Microsoft store is offering 3.14% off on Dell tablets. At Mission High School in California’s Bay Area, students are composing “piems” — poems that have “the same number of letters as the corresponding digit of pi.” Pi Day is also, amazingly, Albert Einstein’s birthday. At the San Francisco Exploratorium, math lovers can parade around a “Pi Shrine” 3.14 times while singing “Happy Birthday” to the German physicist, KQED reports. Retired physicist Larry Shaw leads a “Pi Procession”, in which “Pi partiers will get a yardstick mounted to a pie plate, each with a single digit of pi on it. Then all 500 of them will line up in pi-order” and trot around the “Pi Shrine.” (MORE: 8 Notable Pi(e)s in History) It’s OK if all of this talk about pi is making you crave pie. Last night, students at Cal Tech hosted a late-night pi-themed pie-eating party. The Pasadena Sun reports: students “dug into 130 pies laid out for them outside student housing. There were 26 each of five different pies. Follow that? So on 3/14 at 1:59 a.m. there were 26 each of five kinds of pie. None is by chance.
Oberlin College, a private, small liberal arts college in Oberlin, Ohio, cancelled classes today after a person wearing a hood and a robe — similar to that of a KKK member — was reportedly spotted Monday morning near the campus’s Afrikan Heritage House, a dorm that promotes multicultural awareness. Campus security and the Oberlin Police Department are investigating the sighting, the latest in a series of hate-speech incidents on the campus. In lieu of classes, the administration declared a “Day of Solidarity,” urging all 2,900 undergraduate students to attend lectures such as a “teach-in” moderated by the Africana Studies Department. (WATCH: What College Is Really Like, As Told Through Oberlin Students) “We hope today will allow the entire community—students, faculty, and staff—to make a strong statement about the values that we cherish here at Oberlin: inclusion, respect for others, and a strong and abiding faith in the worth of every individual,” the school’s president Marvin Krislov and three other deans said in a statement. On Mar. 1, The Oberlin Review, the student newspaper, published a list of hate crimes that have taken place on campus in February alone. Drawings of swastikas and graffiti using the N word and its gay equivalent, the F word, have been found in various campus buildings. Even a “Whites Only” sign was discovered hanging above a water fountain. The incidents are especially unusual given the college’s history of tolerance. Established in 1833, Oberlin bills itself as the first American college to ”adopt a policy to admit students of color (1835) and the first to grant bachelor’s degrees to women (1841) in a coeducational program.” Today, the Afrikan Heritage House offers housing for students who want to learn more about “African, African-American and Afrikan-Caribbean culture, traditions, and issues,” according to the college’s website. Lena Dunham, an alum and creator of HBO’s Girls, tweeted that she was “saddened” by the news of these recent incidents and called the school “the safest place”: MORE: Do Diversity Training Sessions Work?

Pity the poor art student. Not only do art degrees tend to result in lower-paying jobs overall after college, but a recent analysis by the Wall Street Journal over the latest Department of Education statistics finds that graduates of art schools actually rack up more debt than those who attend other types of colleges. The figures are based on federal education loans taken out in 2010-11 by students and their parents where the student is the responsible lienholder. In 2012 alone, it is estimated that almost 67% of college students who graduated in 2012 had loans, up 63% from ten years ago. (MORE: Student Loans: Is There Really A Crisis?) According to the study, the school with the most debt for its graduates is the Creative Center Art College in Omaha, Neb. The median debt load for each student is $52,035, while over the first five years after graduation an average alum makes around $30,000 a year. However, that number can be misleading, the school’s president Ray Dotzler claims in a Wall Street Journal interview, saying that students get a decent return on their investment despite the debt they amass. ”Salaries can be pretty darn high or pretty low,” he said. Graduates who end up getting jobs in in graphic arts or advertising tend to do well for themselves. “We have graduates making six figures, which we think is really good,” he added, although he admits that some make far, far lower salaries. The Creative Center is followed by the Manhattan School of Music, where high levels of student debt are also attributed to the high cost of living in New York City. Other artsy schools that have high median debt loads include the Newschool of Architecture and Design in California, the Design Institute of Chicago, the Ringling College of Art and Design and the Digital Media Arts College in Florida. (MORE: College Endowments: Why Even Harvard Isn’t As Rich As You Think) School debt is up across the board: as of the end of last year, Americans carried a total of nearly $1 trillion in student debt.
Whether you were the kind of college student who sat in the front row, dutifully taking notes, or the kind who sat in the back and slept through every lecture, we are almost certain you never sat through a class like this one. Emlyn Hughes, a physics professor at Columbia University who teaches an undergraduate course called “Frontiers of Science,” started a quantum mechanics lecture with a terrifying stunt, according to campus publications Bwog and the Columbia Daily Spectator. While Lil Wayne’s “Drop It Like It’s Hot” plays in the dimly-lit room, Hughes slowly takes off his clothes until he’s standing in his underwear. Then he puts on new garb, dressing from head to toe in black — like a ninja. He curls up in the fetal position while an accomplice — also clad in black — places stuffed animals on stools and blindfolds them. Another ninja emerges with a sword and stabs one of the creatures. Meanwhile, a big screen shows video of the September 11th attacks, Osama bin Laden, Adolf Hitler, and Nazi Germany. “In order to learn quantum mechanics, you have to strip to your raw, erase all the garbage from your brain, and start over again,” Hughes says in the video. But some students believe Hughes has more explaining to do. As Maura Barry-Garland ’16 told the Columbia Daily Spectator: “He didn’t explain it or provide a context, and that’s why it was offensive to me and to other people…This is a school in New York…I’m sure lots of people have personal connections to what happened here on 9/11, or have family members who died during World War II.” The professor’s performance may not be the hardest thing his students will have to comprehend this year. In a 2010 interview, Hughes told Columbia College Today that a typical exam score in his introductory physics courses is 65%.
The Kappa Sigma Fraternity at Duke University in Durham, N.C., was suspended by its parent organization after throwing an Asian-themed party — replete with conical hats, geisha outfits and intentional misspellings — sparking protests by Asian students on campus. According to the school’s newspaper, the Duke Chronicle, the university’s Asian American Alliance organized the Wednesday-afternoon rally, which more than 900 people said they would attend, in order to highlight anti-Asian prejudice at Duke. (MORE: Minority Students in Texas Allegedly Hit with Racially Motivated ‘Bleach Bomb’ Attacks) The Feb. 1 event, initially called Kappa Sigma Asia Prime, was announced via e-mail invitations that included stereotypical misspellings like herro and chank you and an image from the film Team America: World Police, according to Yahoo! News. The off-campus party was later renamed International Relations after a report was filed with the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life at the university, Gawker reported. Several photos from the party, which the Asian American Alliance dubbed the “racist rager,” were posted on Facebook and used in fliers around campus on Monday in protest. However, Kappa Sigma members had removed most of posters by late afternoon, according to Gawker. The fraternity is being investigated to determine the status of its charter. In the meantime, all activities and events at the fraternity have been prohibited until the investigation is complete and the findings of the probe are reviewed, according to the Associated Press. According to the Duke Chronicle, the university formally recognized Kappa Sigma last year after a 10-year hiatus; the fraternity dissolved and moved off campus in the face of sanctions from the national organization in 2002.
It’s been two months since Colorado approved Amendment 64 – the legalization of marijuana for recreational use by adults – last November, and the city of Loveland, Colo. has had to deal with its fair share of incidents involving youth possession and distribution of the drug. But the latest is taking city officials by surprise: A middle school student is accused of bringing pot brownies to class, according to CBS 4 Denver. During a city council meeting last week, Loveland’s police chief revealed that his department was investigating a case where a middle school student in the Thompson School District brought marijuana-laced brownies to class, reported the CBS affiliate. (MORE: 187,000 Lb. of Marijuana Annually? Legal Pot Business to Bloom in Washington) According to the website of the local Reporter-Herald, Police Chief Luke Hecker refrained from commenting on the case, citing the ongoing investigation; the name of the student and the name of the school are being withheld. The student involved is accused of sharing medical marijuana edibles with fellow students, according to ABC 7 News. Amendment 64 leaves the enforcement of laws against the retail distribution of marijuana up to the discretion of local communities, and Hecker used the council meeting to urge that Loveland’s city counselors prohibit marijuana sales, the Reporter-Herald said. The marijuana edibles the student allegedly brought to class were reportedly legally obtained, according to the Reporter-Herald. But while the new law legalizes the possession of up to 1 oz. of marijuana for people over 21 years old, cannabis remains illegal for anyone under 21 to possess or use. And no matter whether marijuana is intended for medical or recreational use, schools in the district remain drug-free zones. (MORE: New Research Questions Marijuana’s Impact in Lowering IQ) A conviction for violating these drug-free rules could bring a minimum five-year jail sentence, according to CBS 4 Denver. Thompson School District spokesman Michael Hausmann said he couldn’t disclose whether the student had been suspended because the district doesn’t comment on disciplinary procedures, reported ABC 7 News. However, the “code of conduct” section of the district’s

An 11-year-old boy in the Spanish town of Xinzo de Limia was so worried about his parents finding out about his poor grades that, in an attempt to escape the inevitable, he faked his own kidnapping. Which is probably not the smartest idea when your father is a police officer. (WATCH: Spanish Flash Mob Lightens Mood at Local Unemployment Office) On the afternoon of the planned meeting, the boy sent a text message to his dad, telling him he had been abducted, reports the Guardian. His dad quickly phoned him back and the boy explained that while taking out the garbage he had been grabbed off the street and bundled into the trunk of a blue Seat car. He did not know where he was being taken, he said. The frantic father informed his superiors at the police station, who issued a nationwide alert in case the kidnappers had left the province. Even police in neighboring Portugal were notified, in case the kidnappers had fled across the border, reports the Daily Telegraph. (MORE: Joe Strummer of the Clash Now Has a Spanish Plaza Named After Him) News of the kidnapping quickly spread online: local newspapers splashed the report on their websites together with photographs of heavily armed police manning checkpoints, according to the Telegraph. But around two hours later, the boy’s father saw that the keys to a spare flat owned by the family were missing. He went to the flat and found his son hiding there, safe and well. The boy told him he was terrified at the prospect of his parents to speaking to his teacher, and had come up with the fake kidnap plan as a diversion to stop the meeting from going ahead. “The child’s poor school scores in recent weeks appear to explain a form of behavior that no one in Xinzo could understand,” the Guardian reported Spain’s Voz de Galicia newspaper as saying. “He and his parents were due to meet his class tutor that afternoon.” MORE: Justin Bieber Murder Plot: Bizarre Plan Foiled by Police

The French take their food seriously, but this is clearly overdoing things. Police in the Basque town of Ustaritz removed a five-year old girl from her school cafeteria after her parents had failed to settle $220 in outstanding fees to the lunch program. Since news of the police rousting of a hungry tot hit France’s national press Jan. 10, the resulting public, media, and government outcry has been enough to give Ustaritz officials lifetime indigestion. (MORE: Will World Heritage Status Be Good for French Food?) “All children in France should be eating in their cafeteria, and not be victims of acts which, of this nature, are acts of violence,” protested French Education Minister Vincent Peillon, one of several officials who described themselves as “shocked” by the police intervention. Dominique Baudis, the head of France’s human rights watchdog, said an official investigation has been opened “to identify the successive dysfunctions that led to this situation”. That may be one thick report. According to regional newspaper Sud Ouest’s first report on the tale, the child, named Léa, was ushered out of the cafeteria by a uniformed police officer, past her gaping classmates. Léa’s father said his daughter feared being fetched by a cop could only mean one of her parents had died. Fellow students, meantime, reportedly assumed their peer was being hauled off to jail for some unimaginable offense, and were astounded when she returned to class a little later. (In the meantime, Ustaritz’s finest had taken Léa home for lunch, and—finding nobody there—back to the police station, where they gave her something to eat.) Despite that show of heart, angry French officials, pundits and the general public have demanded answers as to why the police were ordered to play lunchroom monitor in the first place. Ustaritz mayor Dominique Lesbats told the media that the “terrible misunderstanding” arose after authorities alerted Léa’s mother the child would have to be taken home for lunch until the cafeteria debt was settled. When no one appeared to pick her up at noon Jan. 8, cafeteria employees decided to

School assignments are supposed to make students think critically, but what if the assignment involved pondering suicide? Parents in the Charente region of western France are outraged over an essay assigned to their 13- and 14-year-old children that instructed them to take the perspective of a teenager who has decided to commit suicide, asking them to justify the reasoning of the act by describing “the disgust you feel for yourself.” The teacher responsible at the Montmoreau-Saint-Cybard secondary school has been suspended pending an investigation and faces possible sanctions by public education authorities — though the stern reaction has hardly quelled the controversy the disturbing project provoked. And for good reason: suicide is the second most frequent cause of death among people under the age of 25 in France. Experts say about 50,000 people aged 12-20 try to kill themselves each year, around 600 of whom succeed. (MORE: A Blood Test to Diagnose Depression in Teens?) The assignment was handed out in late October, but was only revealed in the Dec. 10 edition of regional paper Charente Libre. The news broke when parents wrote to the daily to complain about impressionable adolescents being told to adopt a first-person perspective of the suicidal impulse — and go into detail rationalizing the act of self-destruction. “You’ve just turned 18 years old,” the protesting parents quoted the assignment. “You’ve decided to end your life. Your decision seems irrevocable. On a final impulse, you’ve decided to explain the reasons for your act. In creating a self-portrait, you describe the disgust you feel for yourself. Your text will re-examine some of the events of your life that have led to this feeling.” The parents of students involved took the same tack in objecting to the assignment. “We’re disgusted that 13- and 14-year-old children could be given this kind of topic,” said one. Another was more moderate, noting, “We’re not in the habit of questioning what goes on in class, but there are limits.” A third feared what could happen if this assignment was allowed to skate

What would you write if you could send a note to 40,000 people? This week students at New York University had the chance to do just that, after an NYU sophomore accidentally discovered a bug in a school Listserv system that allowed anyone to ‘reply all’ to a generic university-wide email. It all went down on Monday evening, when a message from the NYU Bursar’s office about IRS forms landed in some 40,000 students’ inboxes, according to Gawker. Sophomore Max Wiseltier did the natural thing and forwarded it straight to his mom with the question, “do you want me to do this?” Except he had accidentally clicked “reply all” instead of ‘forward’. He then fired off another “reply all” message saying “SORRY!!!!!!” but it didn’t matter. Pandora’s mailbox was already wide open, and, in Gawker’s words, full of college students “simultaneously realizing their power to be obnoxious.” (MORE: The 140 Best Twitter Feeds of 2012) Some people took a while to catch on, replying all with messages like, “Sorry think you have wrong person.” Others used the opportunity to crack jokes, writing “does anyone have a pencil I could borrow?” and “does anybody want to be my friend?” One relished the chance to rant about the school’s “exorbitant tuition” and its “lazy e-mail list maintenance.” One even sent around a picture of actor Nicolas Cage. Twenty-four hours later, the emails were still coming — an increasing proportion of them angry missives like, “SHUT THE F— UP PLEASE.” NYU Local‘s tech editor Ben Zweig tracked down the problem: apparently the antiquated program the school used to send the IRS notice allows for “reply all” unless the settings are tweaked. David Vogelsang, head of the NYU Student Resource Center, wrote to NYU Local claiming he was “the culprit” and apologizing for the snafu: “I was assisting the Bursar with an email message and in populating one of the SRC Listserves did not realize the list I was using was one that allowed for responses and thus the ‘replyallcalypse’… I take full responsibility for this
