In news that’s sure to upset germophobes everywhere, a study from Michigan State University has found that 95% of people do not wash their hands properly. According to the New York Times, the study’s authors dispatched twelve undercover researchers to public restrooms in a college town in Michigan, where they surreptitiously monitored 3,749 people as they scrubbed, rinsed, or just zipped up their pants and left. (MORE: Could Hand-washing Boost Your Workplace Productivity?) The researchers found that for every 100 people observed, only five washed their hands properly, meaning they washed their hands with soap for at least 15 seconds. The Atlantic notes that even this standard falls short of the CDC’s guidelines, which advise a good twenty-second scrub of the hands (front, back, between the fingers and under the nails) or long enough to hum the “Happy Birthday” song twice. The remaining 95% showed a widespread disregard for the CDC’s, researchers’, or even a typical parent’s daily reminders. Twenty-three percent washed without soap. Another ten percent didn’t wash their hands at all. Men, in particular, could use a refresher course on hygiene. Researchers saw only half of the men reach for the soap dispenser, compared with 79% of women. The authors published their findings in the June issue of the Journal of Environmental Health. (MORE: How Hand-washing Helps Ease Your Mind) The results surprised the study’s authors, who had seen much higher rates of hygienic behavior in previous hand-washing studies, according to CBS News. And yes, hand washing does comprise an entire field of study. The CDC notes that the simple act of hand washing is one of the “most effective” things someone can do to prevent the spread of infectious diseases, while the WHO has designated October 15, “Global Handwashing Day,” because, as the organizers note, “the habit of handwashing could save more lives than any single vaccine or medical intervention.”

Consider the cliché: a darkened room, a bleary-eyed middle-aged man collapsed into a couch, beer in hand, TV-flicker illuminating his sallow stubbled face, and a stomach threatening to escape from his pants like a giant mutant amoeba. (MORE: This Exists: The Hoodie Neck Pillow) Blame that belly on the beer? Not so fast. According to University of California Davis food science professor Charles Bamforth, the colloquial notion of the beer belly — that beer somehow uniquely targets the gut – doesn’t jibe with medical science. “The beer belly is a complete myth. The main source of calories in any alcoholic beverage is alcohol,” Bamforth told Popular Science. “There’s nothing magical about the alcohol in beer, it’s just alcohol.” Alcohol doesn’t have V.I.P. dibs on abdominal fat in other words (any more than spot exercises like sit-ups burn stomach chub), it’s just another ingredient in your caloric regimen, though Bamforth notes that in cases of excessive alcohol consumption (read: abuse) you can develop something called ascites: a buildup of fluid around your abdomen that can cause distension of a sort, though in that case it’s likely related to actual liver damage. So where did this idea that beer consumption spawns belly fat come from anyway? Massachusetts General Hospital alcohol researcher Dr. Aliyah Sohani suggests it may have to do with serving sizes: Both cans and bottles of beer average 12 ounces, while your average glass of wine contains five and your average shot glass is just 1.5 ounces. “You are drinking it in more quantities than wine or liquor, so you tend to have more caloric intake,” says Sohani. “You are talking about a difference between several hundred calories a night and a couple hundred.” Follow the logic here and if the average lush consumed wine in greater quantities than beer, the colloquialism would be “wine belly” (though hello alliterative fizzle). No, that doesn’t mean anyone’s green-lighting your nightly keg stands — alcohol is a calorie-dense compound, after all — it’s just that those extra belly rolls are as likely to come from any calorie-dense source

In Karen Russell’s gonzo 2012 Pulitzer-finalist novel Swamplandia!, a Florida man is hoisted skyward in the talons of coffin-sized birds. In real life, giant mosquitoes that can apparently feel like a (small) bird when they land on you have already invaded the Sunshine State to torment locals and tourists alike, reports Orlando-based WKMG. (MORE: John Malkovich to the Rescue: Actor Saves Injured Man in Toronto) According to the TV station, the quarter-sized insects were first spotted in Seminole County late last week. The aggressive bloodsuckers “can bite right through your clothing and give you a good pinch, more painful than an ordinary mosquito bite,” University of Florida natural-resources agent Ken Gioeli told West Palm Beach–based WPTV back in March. University of Florida entomologists warned in March that Psorophora ciliata — or gallinippers as they’re sometimes called — might appear this summer, weighing up to 20 times the size of a typical mosquito and even more aggressive. The catalyst? Heavy rains from Tropical Storms Debby and Andrea, which probably hatched the monster mosquito eggs that can lay dormant for years. As the university quipped in March: “If mosquitos were motorcycles, this species would be a Harley Davidson — big, bold, American-made and likely to be abundant in Florida this summer.” What does it feel like when a mosquito the size of a quarter chomps on your arm, leg or neck? Doug Carlson, mosquito-control director for Indian River County in Florida, who’s actually been bitten by the insects, said it was only a little more painful than a regular mosquito bite. Still, he said, “The gallinippers are so big they’re certainly very noticeable. It can feel like a small bird has landed on you.” Fortunately you shouldn’t need whatever they sell to fend off attacks from small birds: instead, the usual things apply, like bug spray containing DEET, covering up, or just staying inside after sunset. The good news: according to University of Florida entomologist Phil Kaufman, the gallinippers don’t carry viruses harmful to humans. Poor Florida can’t catch a break. In April, rat-sized house-eating snails

“I’m happy being a prostitute.” That was one of the slogans the Brazilian health ministry posted online for several days this week until complaints from the nation’s growing ranks of Christian Evangelicals forced the ministry to replace the message on Wednesday with a much tamer one: “Not ashamed of using a condom.” Part of a broader web campaign for International Prostitute Day, the message was meant to destigmatize sex work and its associated health risks, according to a Reuters report. The campaign also encourages prostitutes to seek medical attention when needed. Another slogan read: “I cannot be seen without a condom, my love,” according to the Christian Post. (MORE: Two More South American Prostitution Scandals Emerge) The “happy prostitute” slogan was derided by Evangelicals legislators who saw it as glorifying sex work. Although adult prostitution is legal, the South American nation has a growing problem with child prostitution, which is prohibited. The country’s health minister Alexandre Padilha said he didn’t support or endorse this advertisement, the BBC reported. He added that the message was not meant to be published and tweeted that the decision to withdraw the materials was made before any demonstrations against it. Brazil has a mixed record when it comes to sex workers. Unlike other Roman Catholic countries, it publicly distributes condoms, encourages treatment for sexually-transmitted diseases and has pushed drugmakers to reduce the cost of AIDS medications sold there. But in part due to its high poverty rates, the nation has more than 250,000 child prostitutes and a million adult sex workers. Known for its liberal views on sexuality, it is also a top destination for sex tourists. With the Soccer World Cup headed to Brazil in 2014, the prostitution business is expected to boom, TIME reported earlier this year, so much so that Brazilian prostitutes are being offered free English classes to get up close and personal with their foreign clients during tournaments.
For years therapists have used computer simulations to create a safe, virtual space where people can confront their real-world phobias of everything from planes to spiders. Now the treatment is being adapted for schizophrenia patients to help them talk back to the frightening voices inside their heads. “The idea was that if we give the invisible entity a human face then it can be much easier for the patient to converse with it,” Julian Leff, the University College London psychiatrist who developed the treatment, told the BBC. Here’s how it works: The therapist presents a patient with a computer-generated avatar that represents a particularly distressing voice. The patient then customizes the avatar’s face, hair and pitch of its voice. Next the doctor, who is seated in a separate room, brings the avatar to life onscreen by saying frightening things through a voice-altering technology that emulates the pitch selected by the patient. Finally, the doctor tells the patient to fight back. “I encourage the patient,” Leff explained to the BBC, “saying you mustn’t put up with this, you must tell the avatar that what he or she is saying is nonsense, you don’t believe these things, he or she must go away, leave you alone, you don’t need this kind of torment.” (MORE: Most common psychiatric disorders share genetic roots) Early results are promising. After up to seven 30-minute sessions each, most of the 16 participants in the pilot study reportedly heard the voices less frequently and felt less distressed when they did. As they talked back to their virtual tormenters, depressing and suicidal thoughts diminished as well. Three patients even stopped hearing the voices altogether after the treatment. The next step is to test the technique on a larger group. Using a $2 million grant from the Wellcome Trust, Professor Thomas Craig of King’s College London Institute of Psychiatry will begin enrolling 142 patients for a new study in July. “The beauty of the therapy is its simplicity and brevity,” Craig said in a press release issued by the Wellcome Trust.

We’ve all probably had that one coffee drink (or carbonated beverage) too many, at that point in a slog of a day where we’ve gone and imbibed a Red Bull or Grande coffee against our better judgment. (MORE: ‘Mmmhops’: New Beer by Hanson Toasts Former Boy Band’s Comeback) According to a new edition of the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders out last week (DSM, or in this case, DSM-5), that sort of excessive caffeine intake can lead to a condition known as “caffeine intoxication,” except it’s nothing like the sort of blissful stupor we tend to associate with that other sort of intoxication. If you’ve had more than 250 mg of caffeine (two to three cups of brewed coffee) and experienced five or more of the following symptoms, says the guide, you’ve probably been caffeine-buzzed: restlessness, nervousness, excitement, insomnia, flushed face, diuresis (having to pee a lot), gastrointestinal disturbance, muscle twitching, rambling flow of thought and speech, tachycardia or cardiac arrhythmia, periods of inexhaustibility or psychomotor agitation (unintentional motion, say, rapidly bouncing one leg). This disorder, as it’s described in both the older DSM-IV and new DSM-5, falls under the heading “Caffeine-Related Disorders,” but in DSM-5, that section includes a new entry: caffeine withdrawal. According to DSM-5, symptoms of caffeine withdrawal include fatigue, headache and difficulty focusing. “Caffeine is a drug, a mild stimulant, which is used by almost everybody on a daily basis,” said Dr. Charles O’Brien, who chairs the Substance-Related Disorder Work Group for DSM-5 (via New York Post). “But it does have a letdown afterwards. If you drink a lot of coffee, at least two or three [236 ml] cups at a time, there will be a rebound or withdrawal effect.” Anyone who’s binged on caffeine then stopped, cold turkey, knows the withdrawal symptoms are anything but make-believe — the headaches alone can be excruciating. The question some are asking is whether it belongs in a guide devoted to mental disorders (or, for that matter, whether caffeine intoxication does). “The symptoms of caffeine withdrawal are transitory, they take care of themselves,” said clinical psychologist Robin

Which city is the fittest in the nation? According to one annual ranking, the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul in Minnesota are. Looking at personal health habits, community resources and access to health care, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), along with the Indiana University School of Family Medicine and a panel of experts, released on Wednesday its sixth annual rankings for the 50 largest metropolitan areas in the United States. The Minneapolis-St. Paul area–most notable to some for its seven-story Mall of America in nearby Bloomington–took top honors for the third year in a row, with Washington and Portland earning second and third place. New York City ranked #24 (knocked down from #22 in 2012) and Los Angeles came in at #29 (a big leap from from #38 in 2012). Coming in last for the sixth straight year was Oklahoma City, Okla. Residents in cities with the highest rankings tended to have higher levels of physical activity and low rates of heart disease and diabetes. They also had more parks per capita as well as advanced state requirements for physical education classes. (MORE: What’s in That Big Mac? More Than You Think) When only personal habits–such as self-reported physical activity and chronic health (physical and mental) problems–are measured, Washington D.C. comes in first, followed by Minneapolis, Minn. and San Francisco, Calif. When only community resources–such as availability of public transportation and parks–are measured, Cincinnati, Ohio beats others cities to the top, trailed by by Minneapolis, Minn. and Washington D.C. (MORE: Stress Can Boost Good Habits Too) Ryan Puckett, a spokesperson for the Fitness Index, told TIME that the individual city rankings are less important than how each city has changed, for better or worse, over the years. For instance, fired up by its current low ranking as the 5th least fit metro area (out of 50), Indianapolis started a campaign sponsored by the local YMCA, to get to the “Top 10 by 2025” by focusing on increasing physical activity, improving nutrition, decreasing smoking and improving the environment. Here’s the complete Top 20 list:

Wish you could do more with less during that frenetic morning scramble? Step right up, because stuff just got real with this Colgate-Palmolive patent for a toothbrush that releases sweet, sweet caffeine directly into your mouth. (MORE: Venezuela’s Toilet Paper Crisis) Imagine a toothbrush capable of dispensing a little something extra while you polish your choppers, drizzling the equivalent of a double-espresso with your toothpaste — or, you know, a numbing drug like benzocaine to soothe sore gums or a pesky cough. In fact C-P’s patent (noticed by Yahoo News) mentions all sorts of topical and consumable fun, from bursts of fruit-flavor (orange, strawberry, berry, grape, apple, mint, lemon, lime!) to herbal or nutritional supplements (aloe vera’s mentioned, as are lavender and chamomile) to somewhat weirder-sounding “communicative elements” like hot, cold or “tingle”-inducing materials. No, we’re not entirely sure what they’re getting at here, either. “The present invention pertains to an oral care implement generally, and more particularly to a toothbrush that releases a chemical into the mouth during use,” writes C-P in the patent summary, adding that its avant-garde oral care solution could contain “releasable sensory material that invokes a sensory response when in contact with tissues or surfaces of a mouth of a user.” To be fair, C-P’s patent isn’t the first we’ve heard of dental hygienics mixing it up with stimulants: a search for “caffeine toothpaste” turns up something called Buzz Toothpaste, “a peppermint-flavored, caffeinated toothpaste that packs the same punch as a cup of Starbucks coffee or a can of Mountain Dew.” Dig a little deeper and you’ll even find stuff like whiskey-flavored toothpaste (circa 1961, no less).
It’s perfect viral fodder: First an unusually large stucco-snarfing snail shows up unexpectedly in someone’s Texas garden, then the words “invasive,” “meningitis” and “deadly” start circulating with gusto. (MORE: 5 Bizarre Revelations from the Jodi Arias Trial) In more mundane reality, a gardener in Houston recently discovered what’s sometimes referred to as a giant African land snail (scientific name Achatina fulica) in her yard. The snails, which can measure up to three inches in height and eight inches in length, often host a variety of parasites, including a critter called Angiostrongylus cantonensis, more commonly known as “rat lungworm” because it tends to lodge in the pulmonary arteries of rats. If humans contract this particular parasite, they can develop something called eosinophilic meningitis. Terrified yet? Well, for starters, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, humans tend to be infected only “under unusual circumstances” — namely consuming infected snails raw or undercooked. Even then, the CDC says, “most people recover fully without treatment” and notes: The parasite dies over time, even without treatment. Even people who develop eosinophilic meningitis usually don’t need antibiotics. Sometimes the symptoms of the infection last for several weeks or months, while the body’s immune system responds to the dying parasites. The most common types of treatment are for the symptoms of the infection, such as pain medication for headache or medications to reduce the body’s reaction to the parasite, rather than for the infection itself. Patients with severe cases of meningitis may benefit from some other types of treatment. Infections in the U.S. are particularly rare, too. As Discovery News notes, a boy contracted the parasite back in 1993 after swallowing a slug on a dare. He became ill, but recovered a few weeks later without special treatment. That said, the CDC advises common-sense sanitation measures: anyone that handles snails or slugs should wear gloves and wash their hands. What of the snails themselves? Giant African snails are listed among the top 100 most invasive species in the world, potentially threatening Texas’ plants and crops as well as house owners,

What’s the secret to an extra-long life? For one centenarian, it just might be bacon. A 105-year-old Texas woman, who became a widow at age 38 and worked as everything from a cotton picker to a hay baler while raising 7 kids on her own, says bacon is the secret to her longevity, the Huffington Post reports. “I love bacon. I eat it everyday,” Pearl Cantrell told NBC affiliate KRBC when asked her secret to living so long. “I don’t feel as old as I am. That’s all I can say,” Cantrell added. The great-great-grandmother, who lives in central Texas and still dances – some of her favorites include country dancing, waltzing and two-stepping – celebrated her 105th birthday recently with a three-day event that included more than 200 guests. Although Cantrell retired decades ago, she kept mowing her own lawn until the age of 100, according to the West Texas Tribune – a heart-healthy habit that probably helped keep her going as well. (MORE: Why Won’t Bacon Go Away?) When Oscar Mayer found out about Cantrell’s love of cured pork, they sent one of its Wienermobiles to her home with a special bacon delivery. The bacon-lover rode “shot-bun” in the Wienermobile through her hometown of Richland Springs, Texas, ABC 7 News reported. Despite its popularity, or perhaps because of it, bacon’s gotten a bad rap lately. A University of Zurich study published by the journal BMC Medicine in March found that processed meat was linked to a premature death. The study, which analyzed the diets of more than 440,000 people between the ages of 35 and 69, found that eating processed meats in moderation–less than 20g per day–could prevent an estimated 3% of premature deaths each year. As The Atlantic pointed out, however, that’s equivalent to a matchbook-sized portion. An earlier study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine last March found that even a single serving of processed red meat (yes, that includes bacon) increased the risk of participants dying by 20%. That study tracked over 121,000 doctors and

Though breast augmentation and Botox injections still reign as America’s most popular procedures, plastic surgeons are receiving more requests for a lesser known surgery called brachioplasty, or more commonly known as an upper-arm lift. According to a new report published by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more than 15,000 patients, 98% of which were women, spent $61 million on arm liposuction in 2012. The procedure, which involves making an incision along the backside of the arm to remove excess skin, has seen an uptick of more than 4,000% since its first offering in 2000 when only 338 patients asked for it. The average cost of the procedure runs about $3,939 and most of the patients in 2012 were females ages 40 to 54. (MORE: Kate Middleton’s Nose Most Requested Celeb Facial Feature in U.K.) While doctors did not directly attribute the rise to any specific reason, the ASPS and the Los Angeles Times point to First Lady Michelle Obama’s widely admired arms as well as other hard-bodied celebrities as a contributing factor. According to the ASPS poll, 31% of women said they’d most like to have arms like FLOTUS, who has a Tumblr dedicated to her coveted pipes, while Jennifer Aniston’s arms came in a close second with 29%. But doctors emphasize that while the procedure is gaining popularity, the upper arm lift is not for everyone, suggesting women focus on diet and exercise to instead achieve those well-defined biceps and triceps. This year’s report also notes that a total of 1.6 million patients underwent cosmetic surgeries like face-lifts, liposuction and rhinoplasty, 13 million opted for minimally invasive surgery like Botox injections and 5.6 million went under the knife for reconstructive surgery like tumor removal and scar revisions. But breast implants placed first for the seventh year in a row for most popular surgeries.
Cameron Lyle, a senior at the University of New Hampshire where he throws the discus, hammer and shot put, is placing his athletic endeavors on hold to be a bone marrow donor. (MORE: A Court Allows Payment for Bone Marrow. Should People Be Able to Sell Their Parts?) The 21-year-old had his mouth swabbed during his sophomore year as part of a university drive to boost potential donors in the national bone marrow registry. A few months ago, he got the call that would change his life forever. Lyle was a 100% match — a one in four million chance — with a patient who only has six months left to live. “I knew right away I was definitely going to donate,” he told the Massachusetts Eagle Tribune. “I was pretty terrified at first, but it is starting to settle in.” The procedure meant, however, that he would be unable to lift more than 20 pounds over his head for a few weeks, which would prevent him from taking part in the final two meets of the year, including the America East Championships, where he was hoping to throw shot put. (PHOTOS: Martin Schoeller’s Portraits of the 2012 U.S. Olympians) “Basically they’re putting needles in my pelvis between one and two hundred times, taking all the bone marrow out,” he told WESH Orlando. “It took the whole second half of the season out of play for the championships.” All Lyle knows about the recipient is that he’s 28 years old and suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukemia. “I would love to give him a shot [at] a second chance,” he told CBS Boston. U.S. law requires that donors and recipients remain anonymous for at least one year. Afterwards, both will have the choice of signing consent forms to reveal their identities. “I’d love to meet him some day,” Lyle said to the Daily Mail.
Well, that can’t be good for your health. A Utah man claims he has held onto a McDonald’s hamburger for 14 years – and it looks the same today as when he first bought it in 1999, the Daily Mail reported. Originally an experiment to show friends how enzymes work in preserving food, David Whipple kept the burger for a month before forgetting about it. “It ended up in a paper sack, in the original sack with the receipt in my coat pocket, tossed in the back of my truck and it sat there for, I don’t know, two or three months,” Whipple told the hosts of the daytime talk show The Doctors. (MORE: In New Ad, McDonald’s Compares Loving Big Macs with Mental Illness) Whipple’s coat was then moved to his closet, where it was left until his wife dug up the coat and burger a “year or two” later, Gawker noted. “We pulled it out and said, ‘Oh my god, I can’t believe it looks the same way,’ ”Whipple said. There were no signs of mold or fungus on the burger, but it felt hard, according to The Doctors’ hosts. The only thing that had changed over the years was that the pickle had disintegrated, leaving an imprint on the burger’s bun, the Daily Mail pointed out. According to Grist, McDonald’s has its own explanation for what’s happened to the burger — one that science seems to support: In the example of a McDonald’s hamburger, the patty loses water in the form of steam during the cooking process. The bun, of course, is made out of bread. Toasting it reduces the amount of moisture. This means that after preparation, the hamburger is fairly dry. When left out open in the room, there is further water loss as the humidity within most buildings is around 40%. So in the absence of moisture or high humidity, the hamburger simply dries out, rather than rot. After seeing the burger’s rather pristine condition, Whipple decided to continue preserving it. According to Gawker,

What’s the stupidest thing you’d do to score hits on YouTube? Swallow a heaping spoonful of dry cinnamon? It’s surely up there, as the YouTube topic “cinnamon challenge” illustrates: a catalogue of people’s farcical, mostly unsuccessful attempts to swallow a tablespoon worth of one of the world’s most popular aromatic spices, harvested from the bark of a Southeast Asian tree. Except it’s not like swallowing a spoonful of sugar — quite the opposite, in fact. (MORE: ‘Cinnamon Challenge’ Could Cause Lasting Lung Damage) As NPR notes, those who take the challenge — attempting to down the mouthful of cinnamon in less than 60 seconds without a liquid chaser — generally fail, sputtering, hacking and at some point expelling clouds of brown particles that hang in the air for seconds as they cough and wheeze, their eyes watering. People tend to inadvertently inhale the cinnamon, too, which can lead to pneumonia or cause actual lung damage; as NPR notes, one southeast Michigan teen suffered a collapsed lung after taking the challenge. Yet competitive attempts to down the spice and score social networking kudos continue, prompting the American Association of Poison Control Centers to weigh in: The organization notes that in 2012, over 200 calls were placed to poison centers “concerning intentional misuse or abuse of cinnamon by teens ages 13 to 19.” From January through March 2013, the number of reported exposures stands at 20, says AAPCC. (MORE: Paralyzed British Man Fights for the Right to Die) While most of us enjoy cinnamon in various dishes and holiday confectionaries, taken under these conditions, it can work like a poison, leading to serious health issues. As the AAPCC notes, it can even be life-threatening — especially for those with preexisting respiratory conditions like asthma. While not as toxic as spices like nutmeg ingested at high doses, cinnamon contains a chemical compound known as coumarin, which can affect the liver, prompting European health officials to caution against consuming cinnamon at high levels. So in case the examples of Arya Stark and a bunch of idiots on the

Here’s reassuring news to the 1 in 13 pregnant women in the U.S. (or the 50% of pregnant women in the UK) who don’t want to give up booze for nine months: Light drinking during pregnancy — up to 2 units of alcohol a week — does not increase the risk of children developing adverse behavioral or cognitive abilities, reports a study published in the International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Researchers tracked 10,534 seven-year-olds in the U.K. by conducting interviews and questionnaires with parents and teachers to identify abnormal social and emotional behavior (such as hyperactivity, attention defecits or conduct problems). In addition, researchers quizzed the kids in math, reading, and spatial skills. Comparing the results of children born to mothers who were light drinkers and those who abstained from alcohol during pregnancy, researchers found no significant difference between the abilities of the two groups of seven-year-olds. In fact, when looking at boys born to light drinkers, researchers found them to have slightly fewer reported behavioral problems and higher reading and spatial skills. (MORE: Alcohol Doesn’t Affect Ability to Survive Breast Cancer) “This is a very good paper and controlled for socio-economic and cultural confounding factors as well as possible. Although it didn’t control for all of them — like IQ,” Patrick O’Brien, a spokesman for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) said in an interview with the BBC. But researchers caution that their research is still a work in progress since the children could exhibit adverse effects later in life. ”It remains unclear as to what level of alcohol consumption may have adverse outcomes so this should not alter current advice and if women are worried about consumption levels the safest option would be to abstain from drinking during pregnancy,” advises John Thorp, the journal’s Deputy-Editor-in-Chief in a statement.
The devastating economic crisis that gripped Cuba in the 1990s led to a marked improvement in the nation’s health, researchers have found. After the collapse of the Soviet Union — and the subsequent termination of Soviet aid — and amid the tightening of the U.S. embargo, Cuba’s government was forced to implement tight rationing of food and fuel. But it also introduced policies like commercial neighborhood gardens and the use of animals in farming in place of machinery. Cuba imported 1.5 million bicycles from China, and produced half a million more. By looking at health statistics from that time—known in Cuba as the “Special Period”—researchers could see if such wholesale changes in dietary and exercise habits, across the population, made a difference to the nation’s health. (MORE: Cuba’s Yoani Sánchez: What to Make of the Dissident’s World Tour) Cuba has a long tradition of public health and cardiovascular research, and the researchers — from Spain, Cuba and the U.S. — were able to examine detailed data about body mass changes and diabetes cases between 1980 and 2010. The results, published in the British Medical Journal, show that during the crisis the average Cuban lost up to 11 pounds, and the country saw a rapid decline in death rates from diabetes and coronary heart disease. But when the economic crisis ended in 1996,people in Cuba started to get heavier again, notes the study: although physical activity levels only declined slightly, by 2002 Cubans were enjoying their country’s sustained economic growth, consuming more food and drink than they were before the crisis, and putting on an average of around 20 lbs each between 1995 and 2010. (MORE: Lessons in Socialism: How Cuba Can Become Relevant Again) “By 2011, the Cuban population has regained enough weight to almost triple the obesity rates of 1995,” write the researchers, noting that they also saw a surge in diabetes cases. Manuel Franco an associate professor at the University of Alcalá in Madrid who led the study, said in a video presenting the team’s results that top-down efforts to bring down

On the eve of World Water Day last week, the U.N. offered a sobering statistic: according to its recent study, more people on earth have access to cell phones than toilets. Out of the world’s estimated 7 billion people, 6 billion have access to mobile phones. Far fewer — only 4.5 billion people — have access to working toilets. Of the 2.5 billion who don’t have proper sanitation, 1.1 billion defecate in the open, according to the study. U.N. Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson said in a statement that this is a global crisis that people “don’t like to talk about.” He said the U.N. is trying to cut in half the number of people without access to clean toilets by 2015 and eliminate by 2025 the practice of open defecation, which is linked to many diseases. (MORE: Are Toilets a Feminist Issue?) According to Yahoo, India alone is responsible for 60% of the global population lacking access to basic sanitation. About half of its 1.2 billion residents are mobile subscribers, but only 366 million people (about one-third of its population) have access to toilets, noted a 2010 U.N. report. Last August, Bill Gates launched the “Reinvent the Toilet” campaign to reduce the number of children who die as a result of sanitation problems. According to the Los Angeles Times, in 2011 the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation offered $42 million to researchers, asking them to build the toilet of tomorrow — one that is safe, hygienic, uses little water and is easy to install.
As if residents of the Sunshine State didn’t have enough to worry about, they should now be preparing themselves for a possible statewide infestation of supermosquitoes, according to University of Florida entomologists. Psorophora ciliata, commonly known as gallinippers, can grow up to 20 times the size of an average mosquito. They lay their eggs at the edges of flood-prone areas, where they can lay dormant for years until the eggs are saturated by heavy rains. Entomologists expect that a large crop of these mosquitoes could hatch this summer, given enough rainfall. “I wouldn’t be surprised, given the numbers we saw last year” when Tropical Storm Debbie inundated the area, said Phil Kaufman, an entomologist at the University. (MORE: How Mutant Mosquitoes Are Fighting Dengue Fever) The creatures have been known (and despised) since at least 1897, when author David Flanery described them in the journal Nature as “the little zebra-legged thing – the shyest, slyest, meanest and most venomous of them all.” Psorophora ciliata is native to the entire eastern half of North America. The males have bottlebrush-like feathery antennae, and feed on flower nectar. It is the female of the species, however, that people will have to look out for. The female gallinipper feeds on blood both night and day, and can bite clean through clothing. Some describe the bite as like being stabbed, or having a hot nail driven into your skin. “The bite really hurts, I can attest to that,” said Kaufman. To help Florida residents understand and prepare for a possible influx this summer, Kaufman and his colleagues have produced an informative document, downloadable here from the University of Florida website. (MORE: West Nile Infection Remains High – How Alarmed Should You Be?) The one upshot of a possible invasion of gallinippers is that the insects, when at the larval stage, are so predatory that they devour other mosquito larvae and even tadpoles. They are also not considered to be disease carrying. The possible use of them to control populations of other pests has been ruled out as it would result in more of

Don’t mind the floating dead pigs; the water is still safe to drink – or so say Shanghai officials after removing more than 2,800 carcasses from the Huangpu River since Friday, the Associated Press reports. The river runs straight through the center of the eastern China metropolis and is one of the primary water sources for the 23 million people that inhabit China’s largest city. Locals are concerned that the carcasses – many of which were found with exposed organs – have tainted drinking water, but the financial hub’s monitoring authorities have said the water quality remains unaffected. Shanghai residents voiced their concerns on China’s Twitter-like social-media site Sina Weibo, alerting the greater region of the gruesome scene, CNN noted. Business investor Xue Manzi hinted at a possible cover-up in a post on his account: “Huangpu River is the source of drinking water for more than 20 million Shanghai residents. And this horrific incident was only made public when residents started posting pictures on Weibo.” According to state news agency Xinhua, the pigs have been traced to Jiaxing city in China’s eastern province of Zhejiang, where authorities have admitted to dumping the cadavers. The outpouring of dead pigs comes on the heels of a recent crackdown in the illegal trade of contaminated pork, according to the AP. China outlaws the sale of pigs that have died from particular diseases, but it was discovered farmers were offloading contaminated pork to slaughterhouses and subsequently ending up in markets. (MORE: Environmental Protest Blocks Wastewater Pipeline Near Shanghai) Authorities are investigating why the pigs were dumped into the river and what caused them to die, according to the Shanghai Agriculture Committee, but a “sometimes-fatal pig disease” associated with porcine circovirus has been detected in at least one of the carcasses, the AP adds. The disease is common among pigs but doesn’t affect humans or other livestock. Reports in local Chinese media did reveal that thousands of pigs were killed by the disease earlier this month. However, the bloated, floating corpses are only the latest pollutants to clutter Zhejiang

As Kinky Friedman might say, beauty is in the eye of the beer holder. Now, a British researcher has attempted to find out whether that gauzy aura of attractiveness that starts surrounding potential partners after your third or fourth tequila shot actually exists. According to Dr. Amanda Ellison, a researcher at Durham University in the U.K., men and women don’t actually see each other any differently after alcohol consumption, writes the Telegraph .“We still see others basically as they are,” she said. “There is no imagined physical transformation — just more desire.” Her new book, entitled Getting Your Head Around the Brain, explains that the part of our mind that encourages us to mate continues to work regardless of how much alcohol we consume — even at very high levels of intoxication. “The area of the brain that makes us want to mate keeps functioning, meaning that people can still assess how visually appealing others are,” she explains. But drinking alcohol shuts down the section of our brain that stops us acting on impulse before it deadens the ‘reptilian’ part responsible for our sexual urges. (MORE: More Sex Partners Linked to Higher Risk of Drug Addiction, Alcoholism) When we are sober, we are more inclined to be selective about who we approach and consider as a mate. We are “constantly weighing up questions of looks versus personality in our search for the right soul [mate],” says Ellison. Her research also finds that women tend to be pickier about whom they jump into bed with because of the risks of pregnancy. Up until the 1970s women were acutely aware of the possible repercussions of a one-night stand; now, “with better contraception and more binge drinking,” Ellison says, women are just as likely to goggle as men. What’s even more interesting is that the greatest beneficiary of beer goggles may actually be the beholder him- or herself. In a clever study published last year in the British Journal of Psychology, people who were made to believe they were drunk and then asked to deliver a speech gave themselves better
