Until now, the reports of Yahoo buying Tumblr have been filled with hesitant language and punctuated with question marks. But money talks — and Monday it was confirmed that Yahoo made a $1.1 billion all-cash deal for Tumblr, turning rumor into fact. The purchase wasn’t officially announced until Monday morning, but on Sunday, the tech giant’s board reportedly approved the acquisition of the social-blogging platform without a single dissenting vote. (MORE: Yahoo!-Tumblr: It’s Not What You Buy, It’s What You Do With It) News of the deal garnered some mixed reactions from key players in the tech and business worlds, users of the platform, and the general public. While it’s been officially announced that the two companies will be run separately, the reaction was swift from fans and critics alike. Some hoped the purchase would allow Tumblr to grow while continuing business as usual; others weren’t as optimistic, instead congratulating Yahoo on a worthless purchase. Critics thought Yahoo would become a scapegoat for any future changes on Tumblr; and some even started a petition to stop the deal. (MORE: Yahoo! Acquires Tumblr: Initial Reactions From Around the Web) But how are Tumblr’s loyal bloggers reacting to the new arrangement? It only makes sense that they’re sounding off on the social-blogging platform that tallies 82.1 million posts each day. We took to Tumblr to get an inside look at the community’s reaction: Users tried to calculate the dollar value of each individual blog on the site: And others turned to pop-culture memes to expose their fear of missing out on the Yahoo-Tumblr news: One user offered this impassioned plea to maintain the status quo amid seemingly rocky seas: And one couldn’t help but share a pithy note forecasting the worst: In Monday’s announcement of the deal, Yahoo made a distinct, though slightly crass, promise “not to screw it up.” The deal won’t be finalized until the second half of this year, so Tumblr’s loyal users will have to wait to see the changes the search-engine giant will enact.

Big changes could be coming to Tumblr now that Yahoo! has acquired the social blogging platform for a cool $1.1 billion. At TIME, we’re pretty big fans of Tumblr, so we’ve rounded up a look back at some of the best sites that have caught our attention in the past year, beginning with the most recent: (MORE: Yahoo!-Tumblr: It’s Not What You Buy, It’s What You Do With It) Cosmarxpolitan: This clever little gem “riffs on the notoriously over-the-top cover lines and headlines found in Cosmo, translating them into a handy guidebook for the average Bolshevik babe … The impressive number of historical references and the expert recreation of Cosmo’s tone earn the blog high Marx.” — Samantha Grossman Texts from Superheroes: “Meet Texts from Superheroes, a Tumblr devoted to the SMS exploits of spandex-attired demigods. Who knew warrantless wiretapping could pay such dividends?” — Matt Peckham Sports Balls Replaced With Cats: This one “mashes some of the best scroll-worthy subjects on the internet — small furry animals and extraordinarily fit humans — and singlehandedly fills in that gap of mutual exclusivity between sports lovers and cat lovers.” — Mackenzie Yang Google Street Scene: This innovative Tumblr “takes screenshots from movies and reimagines them as if they’d been captured by Google Street View. But finding the right scenes — and gently doctoring them — is harder than it seems.” — Samantha Grossman Your LL Bean Boyfriend: Presenting “the illustrated crush list of born-and-bred Mainer Liz Pride, a recent college graduate who fused her love for romance novel parodies, L.L. Bean and men, into a rapidly-growing Tumblr … It’s part part daydream, part Porn for Women, and all easy on the eyes.” — Terri Pous Dogshaming: “Is there anything better than publicly shaming someone who deserves it and won’t even be embarrassed? If the answer is no, then say hello to Dogshaming, a new Tumblr that’s become the latest form of ineffective punishment for misbehavin’ canines.” — Terri Pous Bon Iver Erotic Stories: “The blog — boniverotica for short — couples pictures of the artist in full sensitive-beefcake mode with outdoorsy, naughty, hilarious fantasies of what life would be like

Bill Clinton and Warren Buffett joined Twitter within days of each other, creating a #FollowFriday opportunity so epic that even President Obama couldn’t help but join in. So who’s next? The social network has been, on balance, a PR blessing for many public figures who want to connect directly (See: Murdoch, Rupert). But the unfiltered nature of Twitter has its downsides (See: Weiner, Anthony), something some celebrities have cited as their reason for avoiding social media altogether. Here’s our ultimate wishlist of the public figures we’d like to see join the Pope and start tweeting. 1) George Clooney Everybody’s favorite silver fox could be almost as dashing in 140 characters as he is onscreen. But he’s said he doesn’t want in, telling TIME in 2011 that it’s just not worth it. Why? “Because I drink in the evening and I don’t want anything that I write at midnight to end my career — “You can kiss my ass,” all spelled wrong.” 2) Jennifer Lawrence The Internet’s ongoing love affair with ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ actress Jennifer Lawrence would certainly reach a fever pitch if she brought her candid real talk to Twitter. But that’s highly unlikely, especially after she told David Letterman earlier this year that she shares his disdain for tweeting: “I’m not even on Twitter and I’m so worried about it…[tweeting] would be like a punishment for me.” 3) Tim Cook and Jonathan Ive Though tech CEOs like Yahoo’s @MarissaMayer and Google’s @KevinRose often take to Twitter to share news and promote products, not so for Apple’s top honchos. Imagine the suspense and speculation of them could generate with a single tweet. 4) David Beckham Soccer superstar Beckham should join fellow footballers like @Cristiano and @Kaka, who each command more than 15 million followers (and counting). He could also tweet with wife Victoria, who counters her sometimes frosty image by sharing fun photos and brief missives about fashion and family. 5) Jon Stewart The beloved satirist is represented with his @TheDailyShow account, but imagine if his faux rivalry with Comedy Central

Fashion, sex, beauty … and socialism? All of that and more in Cosmarxpolitan, the new (faux) magazine hot off the Tumblr presses. The new blog riffs on the notoriously over-the-top cover lines and headlines found in Cosmo, translating them into a handy guidebook for the average Bolshevik babe. With the tagline “fun, fearless freedom from the oppression of capitalism,” Cosmarxpolitan serves up double entendre after double entendre. (See: “So divine, he’ll call you the opiate of his masses” and “Seize the means of his production”). (MORE: Tumblr of the Week: Famous Movies Scenes as Seen Through Google Street View) According to the site’s FAQ section, Cosmarxpolitan is the brainchild of “smug college students with too much time on our hands.” The creators also clarify that their intention is “to ridicule the awful advice and backwards attitudes of magazines targeted at women; not to poke fun at those who suffered under communist rulers.” So that clears things up. Everything marginally related to Communism is fair game in Cosmarxpolitan, with cover teasers like ”The REAL Bay of Pigs disaster: 50+ bikini horries stories!” and “Mao suits: sexy or skanky?” Also featured are “hot new interrogation tips and tricks straight from the secret police” to help you get your man to open up, along with the best ways to “build a gulag archipelago on a budget!” The new Tumblr might have some seeing red, but in our book, the impressive number of historical references and the expert recreation of Cosmo’s tone earn the blog high Marx.
The group of five living U.S. presidents–dubbed The World’s Most Exclusive Club–has now been superceded by the group of two living U.S. presidents who have verified public Twitter accounts. Joining @BarackObama, @billclinton (all lower-case) sent out his first message into the Twitterverse just 2 days ago. And he already has half a million followers. Earlier this month, comedian Stephen Colbert had Clinton on his show for the first time and took the liberty of thumbing Clinton’s first-ever tweet under the handle, @PrezBillyJeff, which Colbert had created for the former President (it’s now set to private). (WATCH: Bill Clinton Sends First Tweet with Stephen Colbert) Sorry I couldn't make it @StephenAtHome. I've been busy with @Clintonfdn work on global heath. Thrs is #WorldMalariaDay you know #Raincheck?— Bill Clinton (@billclinton) April 25, 2013 With 5 tweets and counting (though no Vine yet), the former President already seems like he’s got a pretty good handle on how to use the social media service: Name-dropping fellow tweeters (who he probably knows in real life–unlike the rest of us): Enjoying @Twitter so far. Where else can you hear from @BillGates @PaulPierce34 @SenJohnMcCain @TheEllenShow @Usher in one day? #thisisgreat— Bill Clinton (@billclinton) April 25, 2013 Inserting a #hashtag: Sorry I couldn't make it @StephenAtHome. I've been busy with @Clintonfdn work on global heath. Thrs is #WorldMalariaDay you know #Raincheck?— Bill Clinton (@billclinton) April 25, 2013 Adding a picture: Congratulations George and Laura on opening @TheBushCenter. Proud Hillary and I could be here. http://t.co/396FW3oPIW— Bill Clinton (@billclinton) April 25, 2013 Besides following Colbert, his feed includes his daughter, @ChelseaClinton, his various policy institutions like the Clinton Global Initiative and young leaders network @CGIU, and @HealthierGen, co-founded by Clinton to combat childhood obesity.
Today’s Google Doodle celebrates the 96th birthday of Ella Fitzgerald (1917-1996), one of the most popular jazz singers in America who was known as the “First Lady of Song” and the “Queen of Jazz.” Keystone/Hulton Archive/Getty Images American jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald, performing, circa 1975. (PHOTOS: Ella and Friends: Portraits of the Queen of Jazz and Other Legends on LIFE.com) Born in Newport News, Virginia, she was raised in Yonkers, New York, but ran away from home to escape her abusive stepfather after her mother died. To get by, she would sing and dance on the streets of Harlem and warn prostitutes when police were nearby. She got her big break at the age of 16, when she won an amateur night at the Apollo Theater in 1934. That’s when jazz drummer Chick Webb decided to take her under his wing, and she started singing in his Big Band. Between 1956-1964, she recorded unforgettable covers of songs by “Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, the Gershwins, Johnny Mercer, Irving Berlin, and Rodgers and Hart,” according to her official website. In 1987, President Ronald Reagan awarded Fitzgerald the National Medal of Arts. As TIME described Fitzgerald’s singing in a Nov. 27, 1964, profile: Her incredible improvising runs are effortless. She can take off from a melody, go over it, around it, through it, under it, moving at twice the speed of nine-to-five Man, tossing in casual doodies in the abstract expressionism of sound. When other singers’ jugulars would be bulging, Ella isn’t even panting. She seems to breathe through her ears. Her range goes from lower owl to upper sparrow. Her voice sounds all of 20 years old. Her manner, for all her speed, is soothing. Just when you think she might be turning into Bonnie Baker, however, she kicks the lid off and begins to scat: ‘Scoodee-oo-da-do-dee-uba-ty-ty-ta-roo.’ She is the chair professor of the art of scat singing, wherein a singer abandons comprehensible lyrics in the middle of a song, and she can scoodee-oo-da for 800 bars without running out of fresh gibberish. (LIST: A History of Google Doodles) Although perhaps she summed up her own style best: “I sing how I

The hidden hive of hackers known as Anonymous are reportedly making a foray into the world of established media: according to the BBC, the group is attempting to launch own news website. Anonymous posted their plans for the news site on the crowdfunding platform Indiegogo, with the aim of raising $2, 000. Their campaign ended up bypassing the initial goal and closed with a whopping $54, 798. As explained on their pledge page, the hackers collective wants to upgrade Your Anon News, their news service, to a website that can report its own stories rather than solely aggregate. The aim is to create an independent news source. According to the BBC, the money raised on the Indiegogo page — started by an accountholder named Jackal Anon — will be used for developing and hosting the website. The fund rewarded their 1, 000 contributors with mugs, t-shirts and hoodies.

Today’s interactive Google Doodle is inspired by Earth Day, an annual event designed to celebrate the environment and raise awareness about conservation efforts. U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson came up with the first Earth Day — held on Apr. 22, 1970 — and this day of action is widely considered the anniversary of the birth of the environmental movement. (PHOTOS: A History of Google Doodles) In addition to participating in local park clean-ups and petitioning elected officials, people worldwide can also sit back and appreciate the little things in nature through Google’s interactive Doodle. Press the play button and watch the sun rise and set as day turns into night. Click on the caves and burrows and bears and badgers will emerge. Click on the dandelions, and their florets will disappear. See ants crawl around during the day and lightning bugs flicker at night. Internationally, 2013 Earth Day celebrations have ranged from a “Great Cloth Diaper Change” in Savannah, Georgia, to a trash pick-up along Clifton beach in Karachi, Pakistan, to PETA activists covered in green body paint demonstrating for veganism in Hyderabad, India. To see what the first Earth Day celebrations were like, watch this NBC News segment from Apr. 22, 1970 (h/t EarthDay.org): And to see how The Office‘s Dunder Mifflin has marked Earth Day in the past, here’s a clip of the legendary attempts by Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson) to galvanize his colleagues as “Recyclops”: WATCH: NASA’s Best Views of the Earth MORE: Earth Day 2012: How the World Celebrates

Today’s Google Doodle celebrates the 306th birthday of Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler (1707-1783), who made important contributions to the study of geometry, algebra, calculus, mechanics and number theory. Born Apr. 15, 17o7, in Basel, Switzerland, he was the son of a Calvinist minister who started college at the University of Basel at 13 and earned his master’s degree in philosophy by age 16. While Frederick the Great invited him to join the Berlin Academy at one point, he spent most of his career working in St. Petersburg, Russia. (PHOTOS: A History of Google Doodles) Getty Images Euler was one of the most published mathematicians of all time, penning more than 800 papers (many in Latin) before his death at age 76. In fact, he produced nearly half of his work after going completely blind at age 59. Most notably, he wrote about the significance of “e,” an irrational number and the base of natural logarithms that is approximately equal to 2.7183. Readers of the journal Mathematical Intelligencer voted his equation “ei(pi) + 1 = 0″ the “single most beautiful equation in all of mathematics” in a 1988 poll. Euler may also be the father of sudoku, for he created the Latin Square, “arrangements of groups of numbers in grids that do not repeat vertically or horizontally,” according to a 2005 Los Angeles Times article. (MORE: How Worrying About Math Hurts Your Brain) He was also known for having an amazing memory and reportedly could recite every word of Virgil’s Aeneid. Euler worked furiously up to the end of his life; on the day he died of a cerebral hemorrhage on Sep. 18, 1783, he had been calculating how high hot-air balloons can rise, as well as the orbit of the planet Uranus, which had recently been discovered. “Euler’s work is at the root of almost every equation, formula, theorem or other relationship used in mathematics, from the simplest to the highest levels,” Afred S. Posamentier, former dean of the School of Education at the City University of New York, wrote in a Newsday editorial published on the occasion of Euler’s 300th birthday in 2007. Ronald S. Calinger, mathematics historian at the Catholic University

Here’s a fan-tastic Tumblr to treat your March Madness media withdrawal: “Sport Balls Replaced with Cats“ mashes some of the best scroll-worthy subjects on the internet–small furry animals and extraordinarily fit humans–and singlehandedly fills in that gap of mutual exclusivity between sports lovers and cat lovers. Though less than a week old, it’s got a lot going on: Pelé doing a victory lap with cat in hand, Sharapova pulling a cat by its neck and the the strangely neglected Olympic sport of handball, or rather, “handkitten.” Enjoy!

“Nothing fascinates male human beings more than guns and sex,” says Joerg Sprave, like a character out of some kind of crossover Doomsday Preppers-meets-My Crazy Obsession TV show. And the jolly host of The Slingshot Channel on Youtube has combined the two to make a “Condom Applicator Slingshot Gun” in response to the Next Generation Condom contest sponsored by Bill and Melinda Gates. Last month, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation issued a $100,000 challenge for inventors to improve on the 400-year-old prophylactic and “life-saving device” by creating a condom so appealing that it trumps the decision to not wear one. So does this stocky German’s idea fit into some of the challenge’s guidelines? Application of knowledge from other fields (e.g. neurobiology, vascular biology) to new strategies for improving condom desirability? Yeah, slingshot guns are totally out of left field, right? Application of safe new materials that may preserve or enhance sensation. Probably not–Sprave laughingly acknowledges the pain that would come along with shooting and slapping latex on. But in all seriousness, whether or not you were entertained by Sprave’s idea (or his others ones, like the Oreo-splitting slingshot), his video’s almost 3 million views sure has raised more awareness about the Gates Foundation’s contest.

But we’re working off a detailed road map and we know where we’re going. Believe it or not, that bit of wisdom came straight out of a New York Times ArtsBeat Q&A with Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. In honor of National Poetry month, the Times’ senior software architect Jacob Harris created an algorithm that browses articles on the NYTimes.com homepage for sentences that would make good haikus, reports the Neiman Journalism Lab. In case you don’t remember from high school English class, a haiku is a poem of Japanese origin made up of three lines — five syllables in the first line, seven in the second, and five in the third. (MORE: Startup Giant Thinkwell Reinvents Itself with Haiku Deck) In a seemingly simple process, the software combs through the texts for “haiku-friendly” words then checks them against a pronunciation dictionary, explained Neiman Lab. The dictionary also helps with the syllable count. All of the algorithm’s creations are posted on a Tumblr called Times Haiku, along with links to the original articles. The site was inspired by Haikuleaks, a similar generator that writes haiku from Wikileaks’ diplomatic cables. Harris was also the brains behind the bot @nytimes_ebooks, a parody of @Horse_ebooks, an Internet bot that constructs nonsensical tweets from words found online. Times Haiku is one way the newspaper hopes to broaden the reach of its articles, Marc Lavallee, assistant editor for interactive news, told Neiman Lab: “If someone sees the site, or the image of an individual haiku and shares it on Tumblr, and it gets them to think about who we are and what we do, or gives them a moment of pause, I think we’ve succeeded in a way.” MORE: HaikuLeaks — The New Way to Read Your WikiLeaks

Google Maps just released these images from its newest project: snapping 360 degree views of some of the world’s most famous mountains. Armed with two sets of cameras, some 10 mountain-enthusiast Google employees asked management if they could document the peaks while on vacation. The result? Striking vistas of Aconcagua in Argentina, Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Mount Elbrus in Russia and Everest Base Camp in Nepal. While on the peaks, the team took three shots while facing north, three south, three east and three west, and later stitched them together using Google Map technology. The Googlers say they hope the project can provide access to some of the most remote parts of the world. “I’m generally just an adventurous person,” Dan Fredinburg, 31, Google’s Technical Program Manager who went on all four expeditions, tells TIME. “I wanted to inspire others to get out there and see things for themselves.”

Stop making ‘Harlem Shake’ videos, and listen up: South Korean rapper PSY announced today that he is releasing a follow-up to his worldwide hit “Gangnam Style.” (WATCH: Politician’s Son Begs His Dad To Never Go ‘Gangnam Style’ Again) The single is due out Apr. 13, and Psy will perform a concert dubbed “Happening” at the Seoul World Cup Stadium later that night, which will be streamed live on YouTube. PSY, whose real name is Park Jae-sang, delivered the news in Korean, English, Chinese, Thai, Spanish, French, Portuguese and Indonesian subtitles — a sign of how popular “Gangnam Style” has become worldwide. In October, he told the BBC his next single would be in English and hoped it would live up to the global smash: (PHOTOS: This Is What Happens When Psy Performs a Free Concert in South Korea) “The thing is, it’s too much pressure to overcome ‘Gangnam Style,’” he said. “It’s really hard.” The meme — which features PSY gallivanting with models and riding what looks like an invisible horse through Seoul’s chic Gangnam district — became an Internet sensation last summer. Since then, it has garnered more than 1 billion views, becoming most watched YouTube video of all time. PSY also performed at the White House’s Christmas concert and at South Korean President Park Geun-hye’s inauguration ceremony last month. So as you wait for PSY’s new single to drop next month, don some sunglasses and start finessing your invisible horse moves.
When news broke Tuesday that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez had died, Twitter exploded. Democratic congressman José E. Serrano, who represents parts of the borough of the Bronx in New York City, eulogized the leftist leader on Twitter: The Venezuelan president and the congressman have something of a history together; Chavez worked with Serrano to bring discounted Venezuelan heating oil to low-income residents of the South Bronx and visited the borough in 2005. Not everybody loves the guy who once called U.S President George W. Bush the “devil” from the podium of the U.N. General Assembly, however, and blowback was swift: The Republican National Committee responded with a statement (via Business Insider) calling Serrano’s tweet “insulting”: “It’s simply insulting that a Democrat Congressman would praise the authoritarian ruler Hugo Chavez. Chavez systematically cracked down on the basic freedom and liberties of Venezuelans, nationalized private industries, and befriended anti-American dictators like Castro, Ahmadinejad, and Assad. Americans should stand together with the freedom loving people of Venezuela as they hope for a peaceful transition to a democracy, instead of praising the former dictator.” Chavez’s tenure as president of Venezuela were marked by socialist reforms and at times virulent anti-U.S. sentiment. He died Tuesday after a drawn-out battle with cancer.

Will cats find LOLcats as funny as we do? Will slow lorises watch tickling slow loris over and over again? Will apes have funny baby sneezing on repeat? Peter Gabriel wants to find out. In a TED presentation this past weekend, the “Sledgehammer” singer launched an initiative to create an inter-species internet. Perhaps the most amazing tool man has created is the Internet,” Gabriel said. “What would happen if we could somehow find new interfaces—visual, audio—to allow us to communicate with the remarkable beings we share the planet with?” In a move sure to give new meaning to his hit song “In Your Eyes,” Gabriel told the TED audience that he”always looked into the eyes of animals” and wondered what was going on inside their heads. After reading about developments in animal communication research by Diana Reiss, a cognitive psychologist who studies intelligence in animals, the iconic singer started cold calling scientists (including Reiss) in the hopes of finding an animal with whom he could play music and build a connection. Gabriel had experienced the power of music to bridge cultural gaps and wanted to test music’s ability to bridge the species gap. “I work with a lot of musicians from around the world. Often we don’t have any common language at all. We sit behind our instruments and it’s a way to connect,” Gabriel told the TED audience. (MORE: Turn Off, Tune Out: The National Day of Unplugging Is Upon Us) At the TED conference, Gabriel showed a video of a duet between himself and a bonobo, after the chimpanzee was given a keyboard for the first time. (You can see part of their performance here.) The inter-species duet got Gabriel thinking about what would happen if we could somehow find new visual and audio means of communicating with animals. The idea may not be as outlandish as you think. Gabriel eventually teamed up with Reiss; Neil Gershenfeld, the Director of MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms; and internet pioneer Vint Cerf to figure out how to wire up all the planet’s
