Last week, TIME.com readers chose North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un as their Person of the Year in a vote heavily manipulated by online forums like 4Chan. But that’s not stopping North Korea’s state-run news agency from a little selective tooting of their supreme leader’s horn. On Tuesday, just before the real Person of the Year was announced, the Korean Central News Agency gave TIME a shout-out in a slightly misleading news release: The U.S. magazine The Time selected the dear respected Kim Jong Un as “man of 2012″. The magazine has selected and published “man of the year” every year from 1927. This year, it conducted on-line voting among subscribers including politicians, businessmen, artistes, sportspersons and announcers for the man of this year. More than 5.6 million people, the greatest number, voted for Kim Jong Un. The 29 year-old, who took up the reins after his father Kim Jong Il died in Dec. last year, indeed won by an overwhelming majority in the online poll, with 5.6 million votes after Internet forums like 4Chan launched a campaign to manipulate the results. A month earlier, the website of China’s Communist Party newspaper, the People’s Daily, fell for a spoof by the U.S. satirical website The Onion naming Kim Jong Un “sexiest man alive.” WATCH: Kim Jong Un Has a New Theme Song

On Thursday night in the tony central London district of Mayfair, a crowd gathered for an international perspective on a weighty question: who should be TIME’s 2012 Person of the Year? Hugh Quarshie, a Ghanaian-born British actor whose work spans a galaxy that includes the greatest Shakespearean roles and Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, opened the debate by proposing Goldman Sachs “as a representative for bankers.” Noting that the world is still embroiled in a financial and banking crisis, Quarshie said that while banks do good in generating “vast taxable profits,” they as institutions have “fetishized the bottom line” and are “potentially a menace to society.” Omid Djalili, who once joked that he was the world’s only Iranian comedian–”and that’s three more than Germany,” agreed, noting that bankers have “gambled with our money, lost our money and we bailed them out. This genius needs to be recognized.” Quarshie and Djalili were joined on the panel by British human rights activist and Liberty director Shami Chakrabarti, FTI Consulting chairman and former Foreign Office minister Lord Malloch-Brown, bestselling British author Kate Mosse, and the American founder of London’s influential River Cafe Ruth Rogers. (WATCH: New York’s Person of the Year 2012 Discussion) The designation of Person of the Year, as TIME Europe editor Catherine Mayer noted in her introduction to the event, at Bourdon House, the home of Alfred Dunhill, ”has never been an accolade pure and simple, but a measure of impact.” As debate moderator and TIME International editor Jim Frederick pointed out, Adolph Hitler (1938), Joseph Stalin (1939, 1942) and Ayatollah Khomeini (1979) have all appeared on the TIME ‘Person of the Year’ cover, as well as figures like Nelson Mandela (‘The Peacemakers’ 1993), Winston Churchill (1949) and John F. Kennedy (1961). In that spirit, Rogers suggested Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, saying that “we can’t ignore” the effect of his protracted battle with Syrian rebels. The 2012 U.S. Presidential election was another event the panelists felt could not be ignored. Malloch-Brown said that while the 2012 presidential campaign had been “tawdry, defensive and highly negative,” it was “hugely

Kim Jong Un is having a good year. After taking over the leadership of North Korea from his late father Kim Jong Il at the end of 2011, he solidified his control over the country, appeared on TIME’s cover and was even named Sexiest Man Alive. (O.K., that honor was actually bestowed as a spoof in satirical newspaper the Onion, but a Chinese news service mistook the piece for real news and the story went global.) Now he has ranked first in TIME’s completely unscientific Person of the Year reader poll, with 5.6 million votes. Not bad for a man who didn’t make an official public appearance until 2010. This doesn’t mean Kim is TIME’s Person of the Year. That choice is made by the editors of TIME, and will be revealed Dec. 19 on the Today show, on TIME.com and via TIME’s Twitter handle. The poll allows readers to weigh in on the people — and things (hello, Curiosity rover!) — who they think influenced the news, for better or worse, in 2012. “While we don’t make our selection based on the poll results,” says TIME executive editor Radhika Jones, “it’s always interesting to see where some of our preferred candidates end up.” (For more on how TIME editors choose the Person of the Year, see a Q&A with Jones.) The Daily Show funny man Jon Stewart, Undocumented Immigrants, Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas, Burmese leaders Aung San Suu Kyi and Thein Sein, Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie all made it into the top 10. However, some of the highest vote tallies got a boost from members of Internet forums like 4Chan, which launched a campaign to manipulate the results, pushing North Korea’s leader to the top of the list. The largest number of “no way” votes went to Morsi. Despite his unfavorable ranking, his inclusion on the poll elicited a flurry of passionate responses via social media, as did TIME’s Dec. 10 Morsi cover story and exclusive interview. Other notable inclusions prompted plenty of online chatter, even if they didn’t result in a top ranking: Pakistani schoolgirl and girls’ education advocate
