Ever dreamed of making a living — a real living — off the written word? In the words of immortal poet and playwright Oscar Wilde, don’t quit your day job. (MORE: Q&A: Why Insults Exist–and Why One Man Wants to End Them) “The best work in literature is always done by those who do not depend on it for their daily bread and the highest form of literature, Poetry, brings no wealth to the singer,” wrote Wilde in a recently discovered 13-page letter to an aspiring young writer. The letter, according toThe Telegraph, was found along with the first draft of his sonnet “The New Remorse” — written for his lover Lord Alfred Douglas — in a box stashed at the back of a wardrobe in Oxfordshire, U.K. It’s not clear when Wilde penned the undated letter, but the first draft of the sonnet was written just after Wilde and Douglas met in 1891 — around the time Wilde was becoming well-respected in London as a playwright. “Make some sacrifice for your art and you will be repaid but ask of art to sacrifice herself for you and a bitter disappointment may come to you,” Wilde continued in the letter, soon be auctioned alongside the first draft of the sonnet. The letter itself could fetch up to £12,000 (about US$18,000). “The letter is hitherto unknown and is entirely fascinating,” said Mike Heseltine, an auctioneer with Bloomsbury of London: “It is hard to say whether Wilde knew the aspiring writer but he went on for 13 pages and was quite honest and direct in his words of advice. The gist of it is telling the recipient, a Mr. Morgan, to write by all means but to make sure he has some other job to rely on for money.” Artists over the centuries have had plenty to say on the prospects of earning a living wage for your art: as the humorist Robert Benchley wrote, “The freelance writer is a man who is paid per piece or per word or perhaps.” You might argue the inscription on Dante’s

We’re nothing if not good sharers at NewsFeed, which is why we don’t just point you in the direction of TIME’s top 10 quotes of the year but — as the saying sort of goes — to others that are also available. Case in point: Fred Shapiro, associate librarian at Yale Law School, released his seventh annual list of the most notable quotes of the year. Spoiler alert: politics features pretty heavily. (LIST: TIME’s Top 10 of Everything 2012) Ironically, in an ideal world for Mitt Romney, Yale’s most memorable quote of 2012 would never have come to light if it hadn’t been secretly filmed and released to the wider world by an anonymous source, who gave the film to Mother Jones magazine in the run-up to the election Romney would eventually lose to President Barack Obama. Romney’s infamous “47 percent” remark — referring to the vast swath of the electorate who Romney felt he had no chance of attracting, because of the fact they paid no federal income tax — is Shaprio’s most notable quote of the year. In total, nine of Yale’s top 10 quotations are of a political nature. “Debate remarks and gaffes actually seemed to play an important role in the ups and downs of the election campaign and may even have affected the ultimate outcome of the election,” Shapiro said, and his list certainly backs up his belief. Romney won’t be pleased to have the first and second quotes of the year, with his almost-as-damaging misstatement from the second Presidential Debate, “binders full of women,” high on Yale’s list as well. (See below for the entire top 10). Quote three is President Obama’s “you didn’t build that,” which he’d intended to refer to the public resources that even the most independent entrepreneur must rely on, but which opponents took as yet another symbol of the President’s crypto-socialism. Obama’s zingers during the debates — “Please proceed, Governor,” and “We have these things called aircraft carriers” — round out the top five.
Hell’s fury may be nothing compared to a woman’s scorn, but angering the wrong female could lose you the biggest prize in sport. According to the head of the London Olympic Organizing Committee, Sebastian Coe, that’s precisely what happened when Britain won its bid to host the 2012 Summer Games over rival Paris, after an infuriated Cherie Blair chased French President Jacques Chirac out of a crucial pre-selection event in anger over the Frenchman’s insult to British cuisine. Deprived of its schmoozer-in-chief, Coe says, backers of the Paris proposal were no match for the lobbying of the London contingent, which wound up overcoming heavy odds to beat the French. Never has a snub of one nation’s food by another had such Olympian consequences. (MORE: TIME’s complete 2012 Olympic Website) The tale of the culinary clash that forever changed Olympic history was recounted in Coe’s new autobiography, Running My Life — excerpts of which were published Oct. 29 by the Times of London. It centers on a July, 2005 reception in Singapore that provided cities seeking to host the 2012 Olympics their last opportunity to flatter, cajole, entice and brow-beat International Olympic Committee delegates to back their submissions. Just days earlier at a G8 summit in Scotland, however, Chirac was heard dissing Britons to then-German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder. “You can’t trust people who cook as badly as that,” he reportedly said, adding “After Finland, [the UK is] the country with the worst food.” But Chirac wasn’t laughing when, three days later, he found himself confronted at an IOC reception by Cherie Blair—wife of former British premier Tony Blair, one of Britain’s most accomplished lawyers in her own right and, it turns out, a real patriot when it comes to British food. Blair went after Chirac in a manner Coe likened to both “a heat-seeking missile” and “a banshee”. (VIDEO: The Sights And Sounds of the Olympics) “Above the hubbub her voice rang loud and clear. ‘I gather you’ve been saying rude things about our food’, she said, at a volume that would

It looks like Doug Pitt isn’t the only member of Brad’s family getting some extra press this week. On Tuesday, an anti-Obama letter signed by Jane Pitt, the mother of the Hollywood star, appeared in the pages of the Springfield, Missouri News Reader in response to an article about Christians reluctant to vote for Mitt Romney as President. (VIDEO: Brad Pitt on his Year of Great Performances) The letter reads, in part: Any Christian who does not vote or writes in a name is casting a vote for Romney’s opponent, Barack Hussein Obama — a man who sat in Jeremiah Wright’s church for years, did not hold a public ceremony to mark the National Day of Prayer, and is a liberal who supports the killing of unborn babies and same-sex marriage. The News-Leader later cleared up any confusion of the identity of the author by confirming the letter writer as “the mother of actor Brad Pitt and local businessman Doug Pitt.” (MORE: Meet Doug Pitt, the Second Most Famous Pitt in His Family) Her stance could not be further from that of her son, who is one of Hollywood’s most vocal supporters of same-sex marriage. In 2008 Pitt donated $100,000 to help fight Proposition 8, the ballot proposition to repeal same-sex marriage in California. At the time, it was the largest donation to the campaign from an A-List celebrity. He explained to the Los Angles Times that, “no one has the right to deny another their life, even though they disagree with it, because everyone has the right to live the life they so desire if it doesn’t harm another and because discrimination has no place in America, my vote will be for equality and against Proposition 8.” Pitt and actress Angelina Jolie, his partner of seven years, with whom he has six children, had also famously vowed not to marry each other until same-sex couples also shared that right. (The couple announced their engagement in April, however, and although they have yet to set a date, Pitt told The Hollywood Reporter that he didn’t

Andrzej Bojanowski, the deputy mayor of Gdansk – one of the four Polish host cities of Euro 2012 – gave football fans, visitors and residents a rather uncomfortable welcome during a radio interview on Tuesday. Poland’s image is already under the scrutiny of sport-lovers globally, following aggressive Russian-Polish brawls, alleged “monkey chants” directed at Italy’s Mario Balotelli, and apparent abuse hurled at the Czech Republic’s Theodor Gebre Selassie elsewhere in the country. And Bojanowski’s choice of words, when praising the honorable residents of Gdansk, has only made things worse. (MORE: Racism and Euro 2012: Football’s Ongoing Struggle) He explained in the live radio broadcast: “I thank residents and city employees for behaving like normal civilized white people toward our guests who have in turn also behaved like normal white people.” Unsurprisingly, the deputy mayor hastily apologized that day after coming under fire from many horrified listeners. An official from the Foundation for Freedom, a Polish anti-racism group, told Agence France-Presse that this was “an example of the extent to which stereotypes and xenophobia are rooted in the mentality and language” of Poland — although the group claimed they did not believe any offence had been intended. Backtracking in a local newspaper, Bojanowski wrote: “I apologize to anyone I may have hurt with the clumsy phrasing I used this morning in a live broadcast. I simply wanted to thank residents and guests, whatever the color of their skin.” MORE: Road to Euro 2012 Glory Runs Through a Polish Zoo

World leaders reacted cautiously to the sudden news Sunday night that Kim Jong-Il, the despotic leader of isolated North Korea, had died of a heart attack while traveling aboard a train within the country on Saturday. As soon as word began to filter out from the so-called Hermit Kingdom – via a sobbing state television newsreader, clad in a black gown seated beneath an idealized image of snowy mountains – diplomats around the earth began to scramble for responses. The Korean peninsula is entering an uncertain and potentially unstable period which few leaders seem to relish, as the world holds its breath and awaits the first transition of power in North Korea in nearly two decades. Here’s how the reactions unfolded: Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) “He passed away too suddenly to our profound regret. The heart of Kim Jong-Il stopped beating, but his noble and august name and benevolent image will always be remembered by our army and people.” White House press office “At midnight tonight, President Obama spoke with Republic of Korea President Lee Myung-bak to discuss the situation on the Korean Peninsula following the death of Kim Jong-Il. The President reaffirmed the United States’ strong commitment to the stability of the Korean Peninsula and the security of our close ally, the Republic of Korea. The two leaders agreed to stay in close touch as the situation develops and agreed they would direct their national security teams to continue close coordination.” Spokesman for South Korean President Lee Myung-bak “President Lee urged the public to go about their usual economic activities without turbulence. The two leaders (President Lee Myung-bak and President Barack Obama) agreed to closely co-operate and monitor the situation together.” Ma Zhaoxu, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman “We are shocked to learn that DPRK top leader comrade Jong-Il passed away and we hereby express our deep condolences on his demise and send sincere regards to the DPRK people.” Osamu Fujimura, Japan’s chief government spokesman “We express our condolences upon receiving the announcement of the sudden passing of Kim Jong-Il,

After an arduous fight with esophageal cancer, Christopher Hitchens — journalist, writer, intellectual and prominent atheist — died Thursday at the age of 62. The exact cause of death was from pneumonia, itself a complication of his cancer, and he passed at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. The news was announced by Vanity Fair, where he’d written since 1992. He’s survived by his wife, Carol Blue, and his three children and, of course, his innumerable fans, colleagues and friends. Though his death was not unexpected — Hitchens was open about his illness, which he first learned about while on a publicity tour in 2010 for his memoir, Hitch-22 — it’s naturally been met with great sadness, as the British-born thinker is remembered by the many friends and admirers he made in the media and publishing world throughout his long and prominent career. Of course, as respected as he was, the often scathing writer was not without his critics, as he’d filled his career with critiques of many prominent figures such as President George W. Bush, Henry Kissinger, Princess Diana and Mother Teresa (yes, really!), to name just a few. (LIST: Hitchens in TIME’s Top 10 British Invasions) We decided to take a look back at some of the most memorable, notable, shocking and, in spite of it all, thought-provoking statements from the prolific polemicist. “Violent, irrational, intolerant, allied to racism and tribalism and bigotry, invested in ignorance and hostile to free inquiry, contemptuous of women and coercive toward children: organized religion ought to have a great deal on its conscience.” –From God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything, 2007 “Religion is man-made. Even the men who made it cannot agree on what their prophets or redeemers or gurus actually said or did.” –From God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything, 2007 “Will an Iraq war make our Al Qaeda problem worse? Not likely.” – From, A Long Short War: The Postponed Liberation of Iraq, 2003 “[Mother Teresa] was not a friend of the poor. She

Muammar Gaddafi was many things: a dictator; a lover of Condoleezza Rice; a bizarre orator. It’s all over for the ousted leader-turned-fugitive Gaddafi; the dictator was reportedly killed by rebels in his home town of Sirte. As Libyans rejoice, NewsFeed reflects on the odd leader’s oral history, because in addition to being known for his brutal regime, the tyrant also had a reputation for his eccentric personality. Often dressed in peculiar garb, he was known to speak his mind and, oh, what a mind it was. (VIDEO: Gaddafi Talks to TIME) Here are some of the most befuddling comments and assertions Gaddafi ever made: “All right, then nobody can complain if we ask pregnant women to make parachute jumps.” — Defending his assertion to TIME in 1975 that women’s “defects” meant that their place was in the home. “Their ages are 17. They give them pills at night, they put hallucinatory pills in their drinks, their milk, their coffee, their Nescafe.” — Getting to the root of why Libyan protestors revolted. “We can call it Isratine.” — Offering his solution to the Israeli- Palestinian conflict to an audience at Georgetown University in 2009. His suggestion involved forming one united state, for which he’d already chosen a name. “There is no state with a democracy except Libya on the whole planet.” — Explaining how his country stood apart from the world at a conference at Columbia University in New York City in 2008. “If a community of people wears white on a mournful occasion and another dresses in black, then one community would like white and dislike black and the other would like black and dislike white. Moreover, this attitude leaves a physical effect on the cells as well as on the genes in the body.” — In his 1975 “Green Book,” which outlined his political ideology as well as many observations about everyday life. “I have said to you before that even if Libya and the United States enter into war, God forbid, you will always remain my son, and
