“The road to hell is paved with good intentions,” warns the famed 12th century proverb. A modern-day addendum to that truism might read, “in 140 characters or less” — at least in Saudi Arabia. That’s because the head of the kingdom’s religious police has condemned anyone who uses social media, especially Twitter, of having “lost this world and his afterlife.” According to a BBC report, the Saudi Grand Mufti, Sheik Abdul Aziz al-Asheik, said that Twitter was the “platform for those who did not have any platform,” a view that reflects Riyadh’s concerns that dissidents are using online networking to plot antiestablishment activities. The official’s comments echo the sentiments of the imam of the Grand Mosque in Mecca, who used an April sermon to urge followers to turn their back on Twitter. The Grand Mufti has also verbally attacked Twitter users for being “fools” and “clowns” on several occasions, reports the International Digital Times. Not known for his liberal views, the exulted spiritual leader claimed last month that it is “necessary to destroy all the churches of the region,” according to ArabianBusiness.com. (MORE: The Remarkable Story Behind the First Movie Shot Entirely in Saudi Arabia) Saudi Arabia has the world’s fastest growth in Twitter users, according to the BBC. Tweets have provided grassroots coverage of recent protests in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern province, as well as images of human-rights activists on trial. In response, security officials have suggested quelling dissent by linking Twitter accounts with users’ national ID numbers. A number of Web activists have been detained in recent months, including at least one for apostasy (formally abandoning one’s faith), an offense that could result in execution. Observers view the conservative kingdom’s opposition to Twitter as a reminder of the messaging service’s worth. “The more that repressive government seek to ban Twitter, the more they remind us of the value of this resource as a force for freedom around the world,” George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley wrote in a blog post on his personal site.
Davie Bowie’s explicit, star-studded video for the song “The Next Day” off his recent album of the same name has prompted the Catholic League to weigh in with a provocative post describing the veteran rocker as a “switch-hitting, bisexual, senior citizen from London.” (MORE: Behold: New York’s Glorious New Skyline, 4,259 Days in the Making) In the post, titled “Bowie’s ‘Jesus’ Video Is A Mess,” Catholic League commenter Bill Donohue lays into Bowie for the new video, in which Bowie plays, in Donohue’s words, “a Jesus-like character who hangs out in a nightclub dump frequented by priests, cardinals and half-naked women.” “David Bowie is back, but hopefully not for long,” quips Donohue, describing the video as “strewn with characteristic excess”: …one priest bashes a homeless man, while others are busy hitting on women; self-flagellation is depicted; a dancing gal with bleeding hands makes a stigmata statement; and a customer is served eyeballs on a plate. The lyrics refer to the “priest stiff in hate” and “women dressed as men for the pleasure of that priest.” The song concludes with, “They can work with Satan while they dress with the saints.” In short, the video reflects the artist—it is a mess. The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, a sort of Roman Catholic lobbyist group that claims it “defends the right of Catholics – lay and clergy alike – to participate in American public life without defamation or discrimination,” was founded in 1973 as a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization; Donohue has served as president for two decades. In a 1999 New York Times article, the paper referred to Donohue as conducting “scathing attacks on the blasphemous and the irreverent in movies, magazines and art exhibitions,” suggesting that he “fans … simmering anger with inflammatory news releases” and that he criticizes “everything from Miramax movies to tasteless jokes about nuns.” (TIME’s own Tim Padgett, also Catholic, describes Donohue as “dyspeptic.”) That might explain why Donohue is targeting Bowie here: Calling the singer “confused about religion,” Donohue goes on to mock Bowie’s comments on atheism (“I’m

In addition to making artisanal pickles, rocking out to vinyl records and riding their precious fixie bikes, hipsters could make going to Catholic mass their new signature hobby. At least, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn hopes so. (MORE: Possible Ancient Burial Ground Discovered Beneath Sea of Galilee in Israel) Since the beginning of April, the organization has put up ads reading “The Original Hipster,” depicting a robed man wearing red Converse sneakers, throughout the New York City boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn — including the dive bars and coffee shops of Williamsburg, widely considered the Holy Land of East Coast hipsterdom. The blog Animal New York first noticed the campaign plastered on bus stations and phone booths and tweeted a photo. Then The Huffington Post, CBS New York, and CNN picked it up, and the image started going viral. (As Salon joked, the next thing we’ll see is a Cardinal Timothy Dolan cameo on Girls.) But note that the ad doesn’t actually mention Jesus anywhere. “Everyone just assumes that we were talking about Jesus and that shows religious conversation is a part of our everyday discussions for all people, no matter who you are, no matter where you’re coming from,” Monsignor Kieran E. Harrington, the Diocese’s Vicar for Communications, tells TIME. (MORE: Pope Francis: 14 Facts You Should Know about the Former Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio) The ad is part of the Diocese of Brooklyn’s latest attempt to encourage more young people to attend church. “You can be a hipster in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and be a faithful, good Christian,” Harrington says. “There are a lot of different depictions of Jesus. If you go to Asia, you will see depictions of Jesus as an Asian, and if you go to Latin America, you will see depictions that are very reminiscent of a Latin American.” Thus, maybe the “counter-cultural” people in Williamsburg may see in this Converse-clad Savior a little bit of themselves. “Jesus went to the highways and the byways, and we’re going to bars, restaurants, gyms, to get the message out.” The Vatican has been consciously trying to reach out

A month after becoming the 266th Pontiff of the Roman Catholic church, Pope Francis is receiving a slightly more dubious honor: he’s being immortalized in thousands of plastic masks in honor of his visit to Brazil this summer for World Youth Day. The 76-year-old Argentine will be the guest of honor at the week-long event, scheduled to take place in Rio de Janeiro in July. The masks’ creator hopes that hundreds of young Catholics will wear the latex likeness in tribute to the first pontiff to hail from South America. (WATCH: Pope Francis and the Challenges Ahead) The mask is the latest in a long line of celebrity faces to be produced by local firm Condal. “He’s a very charismatic Pope, very humble, he’s a lot closer to the people, a person well-adapted to the current world and society,” said Condal’s commercial director Albert Paris, according to ITN. And Pope Francis seems eager to return to Latin America in the summer. “I am looking forward to next July in Rio de Janeiro! I hope to see all of you in that great Brazilian city!” he wrote on Twitter in March. World Youth Day was founded in 1985 and takes place at a different location around the world every two to three years. This year’s event has already drawn controversy after some Rio slums were cleared of their residents in the months before the event — reportedly for security reasons — despite the fact that Pope Francis is renowned for his work with the poor in his native Buenos Aires, reports Sky News.
A New York high school has apologized after students were assigned the task of “explaining why Jews are evil” as part of a persuasive writing class and the teacher responsible has been placed on leave, reports the Albany Times Union. TheTimes Union broke the story last Friday, reporting that sudents at Albany High School were asked to watch and read Nazi propaganda, and then pretend their English teacher was a fascist official whom they must convince of their loyalty. (WATCH: Adolf Hitler Might Not Be the Best Spokesman for Shampoo) Around 75 kids were told to they “must argue that Jews are evil, and use solid rationale from government propaganda to convince me of your loyalty to the Third Reich” in five paragraphs. Participants were urged to use information garnered from their history classes as well as “any experiences you have” to present a damning appraisal of the Jewish people. However, around one-third of the 10th graders involved refused to take part in the assignment, prompting a speedy respsonse from school staff. “I would apologize to our families,” Albany Superintendent Marguerite Vanden Wyngaard told a meeting called in response to the incident. “I don’t believe there was malice or intent to cause any insensitivities to our families of Jewish faith.” (MORE: Is ‘Accidental Racist’ Accidentally Racist? Brad Paisley and LL Cool J’s Track Makes Waves) The teacher responsible for the controversial class could face further disciplinary action including possible dismissal, reported the Times Union. Vanden Wyngaard did not say when or if the district would allow the teacher back in the classroom, but suggested it may not happen before the end of the year. Eligberg of Temple Israel, a Conservative synagogue, told the New York Times. “It asks students to take the product for a propaganda machine and treat it as legitimate fodder for a rational argument. And that’s just wrong.” Students were advised to incorporate elements of the teachings of Aristotle, the ancient

Correction Appended: April 15, 2013 His Holiness Benedict XVI — Emeritus Pope, as he is now officially known — wasn’t kidding when he cited health reasons for his historic resignation back in February. “Benedict is in a very bad way. In the last 15 days he has undergone a tremendous physical deterioration. We won’t have him with us for very much longer,” veteran Vatican journalist Paloma Gomez-Borerro tells The Telegraph. Though how long that might be is a matter of great speculation, as other Vatican sources have played down such reports, accusing Gomez-Borrero of being “alarmist.” (Her comments came during an event to promote her new book about the transition between Benedict and Francis.) While the former pontiff had his pacemaker replaced earlier this year, Vatican officials insist that “Benedict XVI is not suffering from any specific chronic illness, ” according to the Vatican Insider. Yet, it has been previously reported that the former Pope, who will turn 86 on April 16, is “nearly blind in one eye” and has been suffering repeated falls. “Anyone who has watched the Pope over the last few months has seen that he has deteriorated,” one source tells The Telegraph. (MORE: Does Pope Francis’ Outreach to Non-Catholics Signal Deeper Reform?) Benedict XVI’s predecessor, Pope John Paul II, served from 1978 until his death in 2005, just one month shy of his 85th birthday. According to Catholic News Agency, Benedict XVI, before he resigned, made the same number of trips that John Paul II did in the same span of time during his pontificate. A voluntary resignation hasn’t happened to the papacy since 1415. “His health problems are purely to do with old age,” said the director of the Holy See Press Office, Fr. Federico Lombardi in a statement released to Catholic news agency Aci Prensa. “But to say that he has an illness is foolish. There is no basis for this,” the press officer said. The original version of this article said that Pope John Paul II died in 1985. His death, and the end of his pontificate, was in 2005. MORE: Argentina: Town Renames Street

Creationist scientist Joseph Mastropaolo has thrown down the gauntlet to anyone wishing to argue against him in a courtroom that science disproves the literal interpretation of the book of Genesis. The California-based Mastropaolo, who taught biomechanics and physiology at California State University for 26 years, has set up the ‘Literal Genesis Trial, a contest that aims to improve the quality of the debate between evolutionists and creationists. As an extra-incentive for die-hard evolutionists out there, he has offered $10,000 of his own money that he will place in an escrow account before the debate. The catch for his any potential adversary is that they too would have to put forward $10,000. The winner would take all $20,000. (MORE: Can Your Child Be Too Religious?) Mastropaolo told TIME in an email that there is “considerable interest” in the trial, which is to be held in Santa Ana, California. Speaking with the Guardian, Mastropaolo explained that he will need firstly to select a scientist to argue that a non-literal interpretation of Genesis is more scientific: “They are not stupid people, they are bright, but they are bright enough to know there is no scientific evidence they can give in a minitrial.” The minitrial format is a recognized form of alternate dispute resolution, used as a cheaper means of settling an argument rather than going to court. However, like many legal proceedings, the costs can run into the thousands. According to the rules published on the Creation Science of Hall of Fame website, the prevailing party would bear the costs. Other rules include the demand that the “evidence must be scientific, that is, objective, valid, reliable and calibrated.” Some are openly skeptical about Mastrapaolo’s contest. Michael Zimmerman, founder of the Clergy Letter Project aimed at teaching evolution in public schools, writes in the Huffington Post that the competition is just a gimmick. Describing Mastropaolo’s approach as a “foray into publicity-hunting, anti-intellectual demagoguery,” Zimmerman explains that he previously attempted to debate with the scientists but was disallowed after several disagreements.
Do employees of the United States Postal Service have a bone to pick with atheists? A study by a German company that crafts atheist-branded footwear claims they do — and that the USPS is “losing” packages outright. (WATCH: California Man’s Clumsy Burglary Attempt) Atheist Shoes calls itself ”a cadre of shoemakers & artists in Berlin, Germany” that hand-make artsy shoes for “people who don’t believe in god(s).” The company describes its shoes as “Bauhaus-inspired,” referring to a German crafts and arts school that operated in the early 20th century, eschewing ornamentation and emphasizing harmony between an object’s function and design. The company also claims to have “lots of customers” in the United States. And yet it says shipments to U.S. customers sometimes “take longer than they should to arrive” and “even go missing.” When U.S. customers began requesting that Atheist Shoes not box shipments with packing tape trumpeting the company’s name and ideology — the word “atheist” displayed repeatedly — Atheist Shoes wondered if the USPS, or at least some of its employees, might be up to no good. Thus the ad hoc study: The company says it sent two packages each to 89 people (178 packages total) canvassing nearly every U.S. state — one package with the Atheist-branded tape, one without. And this is where the results suggest something fishy: According to Atheist Shoes, company-branded packages took on average three days longer to reach their destination and were 10 times more likely to disappear outright. An Atheist-branded package sent to Michigan arrived 37 days later than its non-branded companion. What’s more, the company ran a series of “control” tests in Europe which it claims “demonstrate no such bias.” What’s up with the USPS? Who knows, but Atheist Shoes says it’s no longer using Atheist-branded packing tape, that delivery times are already improving and to “please order with confidence, our godless American friends!” MORE: Two-Headed Bull Shark Confirmed Rarest in the World

A planned overhaul of Scotland’s marriage laws may have an unexpected consequence: an abundance of Star Wars–themed weddings. The primary goal of the Marriage and Civil Partnership (Scotland) Bill, which is at the consultation stage, is to legalize same-sex marriage. But the bill would also allow groups that do not believe in a deity but “promote philosophical or humanitarian beliefs” to perform their own weddings — which the Presbyterian Free Church of Scotland has warned is too vague. The Rev. Iver Martin, a Church spokesman, told the BBC: “There are loads of people in a diverse society like this for whom belief can mean virtually anything — the Flat Earth Society and Jedi Knight Society — who knows?” (MORE: What to Expect from Disney’s New Star Wars) The church’s claim does raise the prospect of Star Wars fanatics from around the world flocking to Scotland to get hitched in a Jedi wedding. What form such a ceremony would take is anyone’s guess, although the website of the Jedi Church offers some sample Jedi marriage vows. It’s not quite (but sure, almost) as crazy as it sounds. According to the 2011 Census, more than 175,000 people in England and Wales listed “Jedi” as their religion — making it the most popular alternative faith in the form’s “other religion” category (although possibly thanks to a strong write-in campaign). In Scotland, around 14,000 people gave their religion as “Jedi” in the 2011 Census, the Scotsman reports. And in addition to the Jedi Knight Society, there are several other global Jedi groups in existence, including the Temple of the Jedi Order and the Church of Jediism. (MORE: President Obama Does Not Have ‘Jedi Mind-Meld’ Powers) A Scottish government spokeswoman told the BBC: Our current consultation covers not only the introduction of same-sex marriage but also the detail of important protections in relation to religious bodies and celebrants, freedom of speech and education … As part of the consultation, we have outlined the reason for suggesting a third type of ceremony. At the moment, marriage ceremonies by bodies such as humanists have been classed as religious, even though the beliefs

As Pope Francis settles into his role as the supreme pontiff, the world’s 1.2 billion Roman Catholics continue to find out new things about the Holy Father — for example, that he apparently joined the priesthood after having his affections spurned by a girl who lived in the neighborhood where he grew up in Argentina. (PHOTOS: The Rise of Pope Francis) Jorge Mario Bergoglio was 12 years old and living in Buenos Aires when a budding courtship was snubbed out by the girl’s father. “If I can’t marry you, I’ll become a priest,” the future Pontiff reportedly told Amalia Damonte, now 76. “Luckily for him, I said no,” she told the Daily Telegraph, explaining that her father had already disciplined her for writing a note to a boy. The first Vicar of Christ from outside Europe has also confessed a love for dancing the tango and supporting local soccer team San Lorenzo de Almagro — he is number 88,235 on the club’s membership roll. “We feel enormous honor that the new Pope is part of our club,” San Lorenzo official Alejandro Maccio told reporters at the stadium last week, according to the New York Times. “He has been a great fan for many years, and we hope this will help us.” (MORE: Pope of the Americas) Aptly nicknamed Los Santos, or ‘the Saints,’ the club was founded in 1908 by a local priest named Lorenzo Massa; its logo is blue and red to represent the colors of the Virgin Mary’s robe. San Lorenzo currently sits seventh in Argentina’s Primera Division after defeating Colon Santa Fe 1-0 on Sunday. Pope Francis also used to dance the tango during his youth, and admits to being a fan of national music legend Carlos Gardel. “I like it a lot. It’s something that comes from within me,” the 76-year-old said during an interview in 2010, according to NDTV. Some fear there are darker stories in the Pontiff’s past as well. Critics are demanding a further explanation of the Catholic Church’s close ties to Argentina’s brutal military dictatorship

You’d think after being declared Bishop of Rome and leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Roman Catholics that a little something like a hotel bill might escape notice. But not for the former Argentinian Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, who swung by a Church-run boardinghouse Thursday morning — the day after he was introduced as Pope Francis to cheering Vatican City crowd numbering in the tens of thousands — to pick up his tab, reports Reuters. (MORE: ‘Medieval Knight’ Found Beneath Scottish Parking Lot) The pope apparently asked his driver to circle back to the Domus Internationalis Paulus VI — an “historic Palazzo located in the ancient center of Rome” – where he’d been staying in the lead-up to the Congress of Cardinals that ultimately elected him Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI’s successor. He’d left his luggage there, which was part of his reason for returning, but the Vatican says he then chose to swing by the front desk, say hello to the staff and pay his bill “because he was concerned about giving a good example of what priests and bishops should do.” (It’s not clear how much he paid, but “complete pension” rates at the Paulus VI are €85, or about $110 per night.) This surprised fellow boardinghouse occupant Father Pawel Rytel-Andrianik, who told Reuters, “I don’t think he needs to worry about the bill” because “[the] house is part of the Church, and it’s his Church now.” But the Vatican says it’s all in keeping with Francis’ reputation for frugality — as Archbishop of Buenos Aires, he reportedly rode the bus, cooked his own meals and preferred a humble apartment to the palatial Archbishop’s residence.
Habemus Papam! Crowds in St Peter’s Square rejoiced today after the 115 cardinals sequestered in the Vatican finally chose the Catholic Church’s new Supreme Pontiff, Pope Francis. But their decision wasn’t tweeted, or texted, or even put out there on Facebook. No, the Vatican does it old school: with smoke. Here’s what happens: After they vote, the Cardinals burn paper with “I choose as Supreme Pontiff,” written on it (in Latin), and the resulting smoke rises out of a small chimney atop the Sistine Chapel. If it emits black smoke, they haven’t quite made their minds up. But if it burns white, we have a pope. It might not be a very 21st Century method, but it’s simple and highly visual. Indeed, we’ve been using smoke signals to communicate with one another for centuries. Here, TIME presents a visual history of smoke signals, the original status update.

Here’s a primer on Jorge Mario Bergoglio, S.J., the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, who became the first South American Pope this afternoon. Jorge Mario Bergoglio was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on Dec. 17, 1936. He has four brothers and sisters. His father was an Italian immigrant and railway worker, and his mother was a housewife. Prior to becoming Supreme Pontiff, he had been Archbishop of Buenos Aires since 1998, and a cardinal since 2001. Before becoming Archbishop, he taught literature, philosophy, theology, and psychology. He also has a philosophy degree from the Catholic University of Buenos Aires and a master’s degree in chemistry from the University of Buenos Aires. In 1958, at the age of 21, he decided to enter the Society of Jesus, and started studying to become a Jesuit priest. As the Archbishop of Buenos Aires he turned down the opportunity to live in the palatial Archibishop’s residence, opting for a spartan apartment instead. He cooks his own meals. He takes the bus. He only has one lung. His second got infected when he was a teenager, and it had to be removed. An email chain once alleged he “never smiled.” After Argentina legalized gay marriage in July 2010, Bergoglio described the new law as “a scheme to destroy God’s plan” and “a real and dire anthropological throwback.” When the legislation was still being debated, he called it “a move by the father of lies to confuse and deceive the children of God.” Argentine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner said Bergoglio’s comments were “really reminiscent of the times of the Inquisition.” Bergoglio also called gay adoption “discrimination against children,” charging that the practice was “depriving [children] of the human growth that God wanted them given by a father and a mother.” Shortly before the 2005 Conclave that ultimately elected Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger as Pope Benedict XVI, a human rights lawyer filed a criminal complaint against Bergoglio, accusing him of having been complicit in the 1976 kidnappings of two priests, Orlando Yorio and Francisco Jalics, by Argentina’s military dictatorship. Bergoglio, who had been superior of the Society of Jesus of Argentina at the time, completely denied the claim.
Two weeks ago, former basketball star Dennis Rodman was rooting for North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un during a bizarre visit to the Hermit Kingdom. This week, he is in Vatican City rooting for a black Pope, he told the Associated Press and CBS News. The basketball star’s Roman holiday is reportedly being funded by Paddy Power, an Irish gambling company that is running a Pope bracket. (MORE: Dennis Rodman Plans Vacations to the Vatican and North Korea) “One of those two black guys is going to be the Pope,” he told the Associated Press, perhaps alluding to early favorites Ghanaian Cardinal Peter Turkson and Nigerian Cardinal Francis Arinze. “In our society, in the 21st century, it should be no surprise what’s going to happen.” However, the AP writes, “Rodman didn’t seem too sure who he was supposed to be promoting when asked about it Wednesday. [Ghana's Turkson is] ‘From Africa right?’” Sporting a Paddy Power t-shirt and what appears to be a flower power jacket, Rodman had planned to make a dramatic entrance in Rome via a mock “pope mobile,” but the vehicle has been delayed by snow in northern Italy. While the ex-NBA player told CBS News that he is in the country to “promote” the Irish gambling site, he insists that he is not doing any Pope betting: “I don’t gamble on stuff like that.” (MORE: 5 Things We Hope Dennis Rodman Learned About North Korea) While most of the world is keeping an eye on the Sistine Chapel chimney, someone has to keep an eye on Rodman, right?
UPDATE: We have a Pope! Watch above as the crowd at the Vatican reacts to the naming of Argentine Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio as Pope Francis, live from Rome. Do we have a new Pope yet? Check the chimney. Black smoke has billowed twice from the roof of the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel since yesterday, indicating that the gathered Cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church remained divided on the successor to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. The black smoke comes from particular flares used in the chapel ovens where the ballots are burned, the Associated Press reports. While some are filling out a Fantasy Conclave bracket (prize pool is $300 at the moment), the eyes of the world are on a small chimney poking out of the Holy See’s roof. Now you too can keep an eye on the smoke stack through CBS News‘s live cam, among many others. White smoke means Habemus Papam — Latin for “We have a Pope.” LIST: 5 Ways to Follow the Conclave MORE: Interpreting the Results from the Sistine Chapel

To ensure that deliberations at the Conclave to elect a successor to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI remains a secret, the Vatican has installed electronic jammers to stop any signals from escaping the Sistine Chapel, Reuters reports. Under the shadow of last year’s Vatileaks scandal, when the pope’s butler leaked secret documents exposing Vatican secrets, the Holy See is taking extra precautionary steps to keep the papal election private. Officials will sweep the chapel and the cardinals’ guesthouses for hidden microphones; electronic jamming devices will also be installed to prevent any transmission from escaping. (INTERACTIVE: Electing the New Pope: Who, How and Where History Gets Made) On Monday, every cardinal at the conclave swore an oath of secrecy inside the Sistine Chapel; the penalty for breaking such an oath is excommunication. But the Vatican has had trouble reigning in cardinals who, like the former pope, have taken a liking to Twitter. Of the 115 cardinals attending (average age: 70), 17 have Twitter accounts. On Tuesday, the day the first conclave vote is set to start, Cardinal Roger Mahony of Los Angeles was still tweeting about reviewing the candidates, though all cardinals were told to stop speaking with the media last week: Once conclave begins, the use of any kind of technology to record or send voice, pictures or text is expressly forbidden, reports Reuters. All news from outside the chapel’s walls is also banned. The only glimpse we’ll have of the furtive election process is if another impostor bishop sneaks in and snaps Twitpics.
As Cardinals gather in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel to select the next Supreme Pontiff, we’ve gathered some supremely entertaining ways to follow the secret voting process online. Short Answer Bypass lengthy news analyses and get a quick yes or no answer to “Is there white smoke?” at the Guardian’s IsThereWhiteSmoke.com. Remember, white means Pope, black means nope. There’s also IsThereAPope.com. Holy Text Americans can sign up to receive a text-message alert when white smoke billows from the Sistine Chapel chimney at PopeAlarm.com, set up by the Fellowship of Catholic University Students, or FOCUS, a Catholic missionary organization. Tagline: “When the smoke goes up, you’ll know what’s going down.” The site — which cost $10,000 to build, per the Associated Press — has been inundated with more than 40,000 requests and cannot guarantee that people who register now will get a text. But you can still sign up for an e-mail alert. Smoke Signals If you’re looking for the news on Twitter, note that all of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI’s tweets on @Pontifex have been deleted, and the profile now says “Sede Vacante” (Latin for vacant seat). But you can follow the (fake) Sistine Chapel chimney at @PapalSmokeStack: A Hail Mary Guess the next Pope’s name via Pope Name Predictor, and you’ll be entered to win an iPad Mini (so you won’t have to covet your neighbor’s). Pope John Paul III is winning by a landslide, but if you can’t decide on one, you can click the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button, just like you can on Google. And instead of agreeing with “terms and conditions,” you have to agree to “pray for the next pope (whatever his name is)” — and “the contest rules.” Adopt Me It must be tough to be a Cardinal today, cooped up in the Sistine Chapel, with nothing to look at but Michelangelo’s The Creation of Adam. Adopt a Cardinal, run by CatholicVote.org, will randomly assign you a Cardinal to pray or fast for: “Pray for a short moment so the Holy Spirit may choose the right Cardinal for you, and then click the button below,” according to the website’s instructions. More

Those tuning in to follow the conclave convening today in the Sistine Chapel to elect a new Pope may also want to tune in to this Spotify playlist created in honor of the secret meeting. The music streaming service teamed up with the University of Notre Dame’s Center for Liturgy to compile a lineup in celebration of the historic event. Tim O’Malley, the Center’s director, and Carolyn Pirtle, the assistant director, curated a list of religious songs, hymns and choral music available on the site’s catalog under a playlist entitled “Conclave: Institute for Church Life,” according to a Spotify press release. The compilation includes 29 tracks to help you select the perfect one to play when white smoke rises over St. Peter’s Square. (PHOTOS: Photos: Pope Benedict XVI’s Final General Audience) In describing his selection, O’Malley said in the statement: The playlist consists of motifs central to the Catholic imagination relative to the election of a Pope. It focuses upon certain themes, including the Church’s asking for guidance from the Holy Spirit during this time of transition; the Church’s crying out to God for mercy that we might be found worthy to receive a successor of Peter, who unites the Church in love; and praise for the God, who guides the Church through the twists and turns of history. The playlist is intended to give the listener a disposition of wonder, of contemplation, of prayer to the God who first loved us. (INTERACTIVE: The Papal Conclave: How the New Pope Gets Picked) After five days of deliberation, the College of Cardinals voted on the Mar. 12th start date Friday, the Associated Press reports. The conclave will commence with a special morning mass at St. Peter’s Basilica followed by the first round of secret balloting in the Sistine Chapel. The cardinals will need a two-thirds majority to elect a victor. Might we suggest they find a little spiritual guidance with Spotify and Notre Dame’s papal playlist?
Is any place in the world a greater den of backroom dealings and skullduggery than the halls of the U.S. Congress? Well, maybe there is: the Conclave of Cardinals, set to meet soon to elect a successor to Pope Benedict XVI — at least according to a new parody video trailer. “House of Cardinals,” written and directed by Jon Deutsch and Ross Cohen, imagines what it would be like if a smarmy cardinal named Frank Underwood tried to game the Vatican’s papal conclave — somebody not unlike the manipulative South Carolina congressman played by Kevin Spacey in the new Netflix drama House of Cards. (MORE: How The College of Cardinals Will Elect a New Pontiff) Cardinal Frank nails Congressman Frank’s signature quirks — such as his southern drawl and his tendency to talk directly to the camera when he’s in a didactic mood. While spunky journalist Zoe Barnes (Kate Mara) texts the congressman for advice and source material in the Netflix show, the cardinal texts Jesus for advice in the YouTube parody. And of course, there’s the obligatory shot at the Church’s sex abuse scandals. “Take a step back,” father Frank says, as the trailer music swells. “Look at the big picture. That’s how you become Supreme Pontiff.” MORE: Benedict XVI’s New Residence

His cassock was several inches too short, his sash was the wrong color and, instead of a skullcap, he wore a fedora. But Ralph Napierski, a self-appointed German ”bishop” from the apparently made-up Corpus Dei order, somehow managed to get through a manned Vatican checkpoint and mingle with Cardinals as they gathered for a meeting in preparation to elect a new Pope. He milled around the area outside the Paul VI Hall, where a meeting to determine the date of the conclave to elect the next Pope was due to take place, for around half an hour, reports USA Today. Giving his name as “Basilius” and claiming to be a member of the nonexistent “Italian Orthodox Church,” he posed for a photograph with Cardinal Sergio Sebiastiana and denounced the Church’s handling of sex scandals in front of the assembled media, as AFP reports. (MORE: Most Europeans Say Pope Benedict XVI Was ‘Not Influential’ in New Poll) Napierski was eventually identified by his unusual dress and escorted from the area by Swiss Guards, to the amusement of journalists gathered nearby, reports ANSA. It’s not clear what he intended to do had he gained access to the meeting. Napierski is known to German church officials as a troublemaker, reports Spiegel Online. “He does not work with any of our institutions in any way,” a spokesman for the Berlin Catholic diocese told the German newspaper Bild Zeitung, according to Spiegel Online. The spokesman said Napierski is “self-aggrandizing,” writes angry letters and preaches about sex. (MORE: What Lies Ahead for the Pope Post-Abdication) On Napierski’s websites, which feature photographs of him posing as a priest with Church officials and politicians, he claims to be adept in “revealing the ancient hidden spiritual practices.” He is a proponent of “Jesus Yoga” and claims to have invented a system that allows people to control computers with their minds. The highly secretive conclave of Cardinals, at which a successor to the recently retired Pope Benedict XVI will be chosen, will take place in the Sistene Chapel later this month. Following Napierski’s attempted infiltration, the Vatican held
