Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, or so we hear. Well, according to the AFP, war crimes prosecutors are seeking to make an enemy out of supermodel Naomi Campbell, by trying to subpoena her over a so-called blood diamond she allegedly received from Liberia’s ex-president Charles Taylor.
The prosecution motion filed Thursday with the Special Court for Sierra Leone said: “Ms Campbell’s testimony is necessary as there is evidence that Ms Campbell was given rough diamonds by the accused (Taylor) in September 1997.”
Campbell is no stranger to controversy. Allegations of assault frequently cropped up during the last decade as well as the publishing of photographs of her leaving a Narcotics Anonymous clinic. But earlier this year, actress Mia Farrow alleged that Campbell told her she was given a large, uncut blood diamond by Taylor when the trio were guests of Nelson Mandela in South Africa. Campbell has previously denied receiving the item and stormed out of an interview with ABC News when refusing to respond to questions (slugging the camera for good measure). Chances are she won’t be able to do that in front of the prosecutors.
Indeed, ABC is now reporting that this request from the prosecutors comes in light of the attorney for Campbell’s former modeling agent watching the network’s report on the allegations. Carole White has given a statement saying that she witnessed several men giving Campbell a “half dozen” uncut diamonds.
