McDonald’s announced Friday that they will recall some 12 million Shrek-themed glasses after cadmium was found in the paint used in the glasses’ cartoon design.

The 16-ounce glasses, which sold for $2, were collectables tied to the movie’s release last week, sporting one of four characters from the film: Shrek, Donkey, Puss in Boots or Princess Fiona. The recall notice, posted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, told people to stop using the glasses immediately and wait for refund instructions from McDonald’s.

The health danger is that cadmium — a metallic element — could seep from the paint glasses and cause low-level exposure over time, particularly in children. According to the Associated Press, cadmium is a carcinogen that can also cause bone softening and kidney problems.

A McDonald’s spokesman told the Daily Mail that while the company believes the glasses are safe to use, they issued a recall out of “an abundance of caution.”

According to the L.A. Times, the recall was spurred by an anonymous tip to California Rep. Jackie Speier last week.
