World Cup: Was the U.S. Too Naive?

The U.S. team’s 2-1 loss to Ghana on Saturday was a devastating blow to American soccer fans. But now one of the American players suggests that naivety may have been to blame. (Via World Cup Blog)

TIME’s Bill Saporito has the complete report on America’s exit the tournament – which closely resembled the team’s disappointing finish four years ago. The key was falling early and never being able to regain control. London Donovan may have said it best: “We were a little naive tonight.” America’s disappointment, Saporito reports, was Africa’s jubilation:

Across South Africa, the joy for Ghana was unrestrained, even though the U.S. had gained an enthusiastic following among South Africans after their own team had failed. The Ghanians earned a matchup with a vibrant Uruguayan team that bested South Korea  2-1. They’re a good bet for the semifinals.
