New Yorkers eat more hot dogs each year than anywhere in the country. Ever since hot dogs came to New York City 1916, the classic dog served up with steamed onions and deli-style mustard and ketchup has reigned king. It all started with Nathan Handwerker and his small stand in Coney Island. Today, Nathan's Famous sells dogs in all 50 states and hosts a July 4 hot dog eating competition where participants stuff their faces with as many hot dogs (and buns) as they can in 10 minutes. This year, Joey Chestnut took the $10,000 prize for eating 54.
