A liger may be cool enough to make our list of animal hybrids, but that doesn’t mean it’s above the law.
A privately owned zoo in Taipei, Taiwan welcomed liger cubs on Sunday, born to a tiger mother and a lion father. The parents had lived together in a cage for several years, though zookeepers say their mating was not planned. The tigress gave birth to three cubs, but one died soon after. If the remaining two survive, they could grow to be much larger than a typical lion.
The ligers’ birth violates Taiwan’s wildlife laws, and the zoo will face a fine of up to 50,000 Taiwan dollars ($1,600) for breeding animals without government consent. We have a feeling these cubs will reap enough ticket sales to take care of that pesky fine. (via Telegraph, AFP)
