Last night’s Emmy Awards ceremony was surprising in two ways: the favorites didn’t always win, and the show was actually fun to watch. (via Tuned In)

Only a few repeat winners took the stage, including Breaking Bad‘s Bryan Cranston and the series Mad Men. The rest were newcomers, with sitcom Modern Family raking in awards and other wins for new shows like Glee and The Good Wife. Edie Falco and Jim Parsons also took home first-time comedy Emmys.

Miniseries and movies dominated the award counts, with The Pacific and Temple Grandin racking in the most trophies.

A notable snub was LOST, who, well, lost in acting, writing, directing and series categories after its final season. Plus, Conan O’Brien lost the opportunity to deliver an epic acceptance speech — on NBC, no less — to Jon Stewart and The Daily Show. Instead, he got a few choice moments on screen.

One of the show’s major winners was host Jimmy Fallon, who made the long broadcast feel breezy, fresh and fun with his guitar-focused humor and audience participation. TIME’s James Poniewozik notes how surprisingly entertaining the broadcast was:

The 2010 Emmy Awards broadcast was a night of refreshing twists and unexpected surprises, the biggest of which, perhaps, was the 2010 Emmy awards broadcast. Namely, it was a pretty entertaining night of TV … Who took the Emmy awards away and replaced them with this? I have no idea, but we’ll keep it.
