When Apple announces a 10 a.m. press conference about a new product, the world tunes in, eager to behold the latest innovation headed our way. Late Tuesday, Apple made it official that it would be live streaming the Wednesday event, but only at the Apple.com website – where visitors are required to be using a Mac that’s running Safari, an iPad, or an iPhone or iPod Touch running the operating system iOS 3.0 or higher.
Yes, those are all products made and sold by Apple.
Tech analysts told CNN that this is the first time they could ever recall a corporation announcing news about a product launch via only products sold by the company. They also said that in the case of Apple, which sells such isolated and walled-off operating systems, the move is even more surprising.
All controversy aside, it would certainly be ironic, if this live feed snafoo turned out to be the next public relations gaffe for the company, since some analysts believe the decision to stream the announcement live was made precisely due to the last gaffe, when Steve Jobs had difficulty securing a Wi-Fi connection during the launch of the iPhone 4. Presumable with a live stream this time around, Apple can ask visitors to log off and cut back on the liveblogging, since readers and followers can watch Jobs in real-time.
Just apparently not interested PC readers.
