As the summer comes to a close, Cuba’s former commander rolled a fall classic out of his closet. Was it a sign of greater involvement or just a plain-old guise?
For the first time since exiting the presidential stage in 2008, Fidel Castro made a public appearance in his full textbook olive-green garb. The AP reports that the 84-year-old delivered a 35-minute speech to students at the University of Havana, where he took the stage as Cuba’s “historic leader” and “commander in chief.”
After three decades of driving the country’s ship, Castro has deferred most of the domestic conversations to his 79-year-old brother, Raul. But his Friday fashion statement comes in lieu of speculation over whether he’ll resume a larger role in Cuban politics. Castro touched upon international issues at the university event, notably his stance on nuclear tensions between the U.S./Israel and Iran.
With no knowledge of whether that will come to be, one thing is for certain. Friday’s wardrobe was no contraband tracksuit.
