Memo to makers of the newest nicotine fad: you’re violating the law.

Dow Jones Newswires notes that the FDA has relayed that message to five electronic cigarette manufacturers, on the grounds that the products are being sold without the agency’s approval. The new technology is gaining steam among cigarette chasers, as it relies on a battery-powered tube to convert a liquid form of nicotine into a vapor.

A Wall Street Journal report cites that chronic smokers have been attracted to E-cigarettes because they are immune from normal tobacco toxins, helping quell their cravings. But just like gums and patches currently on the market, the FDA is seeking scientific evidence before letting companies profit on that platform.
