Wondering what’s up with today’s Google Doodle? The pirate themed graphic is in honor of Robert Louis Stevenson’s 160th birthday!

The Scottish author of Treasure Island and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde was born on November 13, 1850 in Edinburgh. Throughout his short life (he died suddenly at the age of 44, likely of a brain aneurysm) Stevenson traveled around the world and wrote numerous adventure tales.

Google has been known to celebrate artists, writers, innovators and celebrities by offering an artistic rendition of its signature logo. Though the commemorative drawings are often appreciated by fans, just this past week controversy was stirred when the doodle was inflammatorily misinterpreted.
