North-central Indiana residents were rattled out of their beds this morning by an unexpected temblor.

The earthquake happened at 7:55 a.m. this morning, shaking folks not only in Indiana, but in the neighboring states of Ohio and Illinois, and even as far as southern Wisconsin. It was originally reported as a 4.2-magnitude quake, but the USGS has since downgraded their report to a 3.8.

The epicenter was based near Kokomo, Indiana, 50 miles north of Indianapolis. “It was like a huge explosion under your feet,” Kokomo resident Debra Sholty told CNN. No damage was immediately reported, though emergency crews will be monitoring the situation throughout the day.

Geophysicist Randy Baldwin said such a minor quake would feel no different than a loaded truck passing by. But residents were caught off guard because the area is “seismically very quiet,” according to Indiana University geologist Michael Hamburger.
