The world’s greatest wedding just got that much greater.

It’s being reported that Prince William and Kate Middleton have asked Britain’s beloved Sir Paul McCartney to do the honors and perform at their wedding reception. And if he’s got any sense, he’ll surely answer “Love Me (I) Do.”

The couple believe that Macca’s music has universal appeal, and it doesn’t take a genius to work out that they’re on safe ground with their thinking (even Wings is looked upon more kindly in recent years!) A source said: “William and Kate have chosen their wedding list and Paul McCartney is their number one choice to perform. They can’t think of anyone more perfect to kick off proceedings.”

The 68-year-old music legend has supposedly told friends that he was “privileged” to be asked a few weeks ago. If it happens, which it surely will, then McCartney will do a few tracks, though it would be brave of him to stray from The Beatles back catalog, which has served him and the planet so well over the past 50 years.

And what a way for Kate and William to demonstrate that they want to be the modern face of the royal family: because even if McCartney doesn’t exactly represent the future of music, he’s positively ahead of his time compared to Prince Charles and Princess Diana asking Dame Kiri te Kanawa to do “Let The Bright Seraphim” in 1981. You sure as heck couldn’t whistle along to that.
