Love is tender. Love is kind. Love is having your romance recounted through colorful doodles and bubbly writing.

So, to commemorate the royal wedding, English political satirist Rich Johnston has dreamed up Kate & William: A Very Public Love Story, a comic book that charts the lives of Prince William and Kate Middleton from childhood all the way to the wedding aisle.

Johnston doesn’t mind if people write-off his idea as tawdry. “There is kitschness to it. But I love doing things that sound ridiculously kitsch, then surprising the audience with something deeper,” Johnston told the Guardian newspaper. In mining those depths, he tackles the death of Princess Diana head on, with scenes depicting a young William at his mother’s funeral and Kate reacting to it while watching news reports. Later, as Kate must flee from the same photographers who stalked Diana, Johnston says he touches on the “idea of mortality and dangerousness” entering her life.

But Johnston doesn’t let the gravity of those moments bring the story down: Wills and Kate triumph in the comic as they do in life. As the book’s official description on Amazon U.K. explains: “She was a girl from a well-to-do background—who happened to fall in love with her best friend at University. He also happened to be the heir to the throne! And as he gave her the attention of the world’s media, she gave him the one thing he never expected: a normal life. See both their stories, back to back, for the first time in comic book form.” The comic, out April 2, can be pre-ordered on Amazon U.K. for £7.19 (about $11.50).
