The site of punk rock’s most famous murder is now…a doughnut shop?

Over the years, New York City’s infamously gritty Chelsea Hotel—the one-time home of Mark Twain, Janis Joplin, Patti Smith, Robert Mapplethorpe, Bob Dylan,  Jean-Paul Sartre and countless others—has been the site of suicides, prostitution and even a rumored in-house heroin delivery service. But it’s probably best known as the scene of crime when Sex Pistols’ bassist Sid Vicious allegedly stabbed his girlfriend Nancy Spurgeon to death.  Now, it also sells doughnuts.

On Feb 14, Doughnut Plant, a Manhattan-based doughnut company, opened inside the (formerly) bohemian hotel, adjacent to the lobby. Fittingly, it replaced a guitar shop.

NewsFeed has nothing against doughnuts—in fact, we’ve heard that Doughnut Plant makes some mighty fine specimens— but we prefer to buy our fried dough pastries from places that have nothing to do with fatal stabbings. Plus, there’s something not-quite-right about the fact that the spot where Dylan Thomas collapsed before dying of alcohol poisoning in 1953 is now just steps away from a storefront full of yuppies who are trying to decide whether they want something glazed, powdered or with jelly inside.

On the other hand:  mmmm, doughnuts.
