In an attempt to avoid a full-blown meltdown, Japanese military helicopters dumped loads of seawater onto the stricken nuclear plant on Thursday morning. Although four loads of water were dropped, much of it appeared to miss the target.

The water was intended to cool the reactors and to replenish a pool holding spent fuel rods, explained a spokesperson. Read more on the operation here.
