Only in Hollywood: The makers of a new movie have decided to recreate the iconic Hollywood sign rather than, you know, film the actual one.
The decision has been taken by the producers of Rock of Ages to turn the hardly inspiring Monarch Hill Renewable Energy Park — frequently called Mount Trashmore by nearby residents — into the fabled Hollywood sign.

Production on the blockbuster adaptation of the musical, which is set in the 1980s, is currently underway in Florida and we presume that it was actually deemed easier to give Monarch Hill a literal Hollywood makeover than swing through California. And so the crew recently finished putting up those magical nine letters, each one a whopping 20 feet tall. And we know that fame can be fleeting but this is ridiculous: they’ll be taken down by the end of the month. Not so much 15 minutes, but at least 15 days of fame.
Yet despite the movie makers’ insistence on bringing Hollywood to Florida, at least some students are set to benefit. The Monarch Hill owner, Waste Management, is to donate the undisclosed location fee to fund scholarships for four graduating seniors from Monarch High School.
Who knows whether the film’s stars, Tom Cruise, Russell Brand, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Alec Baldwin and Paul Giamatti, are aware of that. But it’s further proof positive that whatever Hollywood (the industry or indeed the sign) wants, Hollywood (the industry or indeed the sign) gets. (via Sun Sentinel)
