Today’s Google Doodle does not mark a holiday or historical event, but instead features the art of a San Francisco 7-year-old.Matteo Lopez, who attends Monte Verde Elementary School, took home the grand prize for this year’s Doodle 4 Google competition that asked students grades K-12 to create a doodle with the theme of “What I’d Like to Do Someday.” The ambitious second grader aimed for the stars, and it paid off. In addition to having his drawing featured on Google’s homepage he received a $15,000 college scholarship, a netbook computer and a $25,000 technology grant for his school.

Lopez’s drawing, “Space Life”, illustrates a trip to the moon, complete with astronauts and aliens. The design beat out over 100,000 other submissions submissions in a contest that drew over 5 million public votes. Three other finalists received $5000 each and 40 regional finalist doodles are featured on the competition’s web page and will be on display at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York through June 16 and at SFMOMA in San Francisco from May 20 through July 19.
