Singer Lady Gaga performs in a wheelchair during the "Gaga Live" concert in Sydney
There was plenty of controversy to go around after Lady Gaga’s show in Sydney. Aussies threw eggs at the singer as she left a bar, and activists were enraged after she came onstage in a wheelchair dressed as her mermaid character Yuyi.
One particularly angry response was from Grammy-winner Bette Midler, reports the Huffington Post. Midler, 65, tweeted, “Dear @ladygaga if you think a mermaid in a wheelchair seems familiar- it’s because it is! You can see it on YouTube 24/7- with ME performing it.” And it’s true. There are two wheelchair-bound mermaids currently in existence. Why wouldn’t there be?

A review of one of Midler’s shows in 1999 describes her mermaid act as “one of Bette’s signature characters.” Thus Bette Midler is enraged enough to tweet the message, ‘You can keep the meat dress and the firecracker t**s- mermaid’s mine’.

Lady Gaga, a notoriously frequent tweeter, has written three tweets since Midler’s most recent tweet at Gaga, none of which respond. However, it seems Bette Midler is willing to bury the hatchet, as her more recent tweet offers that she and Gaga can “drink this over at the Emmys in September. Fabulous mermaids can co-exist!.”
This is not the first accusation of plagiarism Gaga has faced with this year’s single “Born This Way” encouraging comparisons and accusations regarding a likeness to Madonna’s track, “Express Yourself.”
