Watch: Anthony Bourdain Visits El Bulli Before the Restaurant Closes Its Doors

One of the world’s greatest restaurants is closing its doors this month, but not before Anthony Bourdain has anything to say about it.

El Bulli, Spain’s renowned restaurant, will be serving its last meal July 30. Last year, head chef Ferran Adrià announced that the esteemed culinary institution would close to stem its financial losses. But it will not go quietly into the night – the restaurant will be featured on Anthony Bourdain’s Travel Channel show No Reservations before the plates and linens are finally put away.

Previously, Bourdain had visited El Bulli before to only be won over by Adrià’s refined culinary techniques. The episode will premiere August 1, just a day after El Bulli stops serving gourmands and food lovers alike for the final time. If you will, an amuse bouche for some of us who will never get to enjoy the entrées.

Arguably the world’s greatest restaurant, El Bulli has the distinction of holding three Michelin stars, of which only 97 restaurants in the world can lay claim to. It also has been named the world’s best restaurant five times in the past decade by Restaurant magazine. It was given the honor in 2002, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. In 2010, the restaurant still maintained its reputation to grab the second spot as Denmark’s Noma crept into first place.

Instead of closing entirely, the restaurant will be transformed into a nonprofit culinary foundation for two years where aspiring chefs will be able to train and innovate dishes with El Bulli’s core staff. El Bulli will indeed return, but only in 2014, and under a completely different format, says Adrià.

Perhaps, it is apt that No Reservations filmed at El Bulli, since there will be no more reservations within the near future.
