A Casey Anthony mask fetched almost $1 million on eBay, revealing just how far people will go to own, as well as profit from, a spectacularly creepy piece of criminal case kitsch.

Sold by “prophunter” of Los Angeles, the latex rubber disguise was described as “a significant piece of crime history” and “possibly the most frightening mask on the planet.” The seller, who ended up with a few of the masks after nine were made for a parody video, put one up on eBay on Sunday for a starting bid of $25. A bidding frenzy ensued, which ended on Wednesday when the mask was sold for $999,000.

The mask’s expressionless mug, vacant pupils and tight bun offer a precise yet eerie rendition of the notorious mom who on July 5 was acquitted of charges that she murdered her 2-year-old daughter Caylee.

Though the online auction, which racked up 105 bids, has been criticized throughout the week as tasteless, disturbing and sick, “prophunter” did note in his product description: “Let’s never forget poor Caylee.”
